ESSENTIALS
ESSENTIALS
FOR ANY VISITOR THESE ARE THE SPOTS FIRST ON THE LIST, THE GO-TOS. THESE ARE THE ESSENTIALS. Every university campus has them – revered and remarkable points of pride. A campus the size of the University of Georgia (a sturdy 389 buildings on 759 sprawling acres) boasts a bevy of such spots, but among those are a few that stand out.
1 The Arch
Located at the front of North Campus, across from the bustle 'of downtown Athens on the corner of Broad Street and College Avenue, the wrought-iron Arch was commissioned in 1858 and patterned after the one located on Georgia’s Great Seal. If you walk under The Arch as a freshman, legend has it you’ll never graduate.
2 Sanford Stadium
Surrounded by hedges, it hosts Georgia victories, Olympic gold medal games and the remains of eight mascots. Sitting in the heart of campus, Sanford Stadium (D3) has welcomed a steady stream of visitors since its opening on Oct. 12, 1929. Through the years Sanford has added lights and seats, tripling in capacity and becoming a beacon for 92,746 spectators on Fall Saturdays. UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA VISITOR’S GUIDE | 11
ESSENTIALS
Campus/ 3 North Main Library
Walk through The Arch and the green space opens up, dotted by oak and elm trees, surrounded by buildings marking UGA’s beginnings. The historic North Campus Quad (A3-B3) is home to the oldest structures at UGA. Look for Demosthenian Hall (1824), and Phi Kappa Hall (1836). Through its eight floors of shelf after shelf of books, magazines, microfilms and documents, the Main Library (B3) is a targeted place of study on the edge of North Campus. It features a Neoclassical facade that is quite impressive.

ARTS & LEISURE
ARTS & LEISURE
THE CAMPUS CLAIMS THE STATE’S MAIN MUSEUM OF ART, WHILE GARDENS AND EXOTIC PLANTS ABOUND, AND HIKERS, BIKERS, AND ROVERS CAN FIND A PLACE IN THE SUN.
Mixed with the Gothic tinge of southern milieu as well as a profound dedication to the classics, the arts and science culture at the university is deep and storied. Scholars such as Lamar Dodd and Hugh Hodgson made UGA a focal point of arts and music across the world, and their legacies are embodied in the programs created in their names.
Museum 1 Georgia of Art
Museum 2 Georgia of Natural History
The museum’s 79,000 square feet house more than 8,000 objects in the museum’s permanent collection.
The museum is the repository for the preservation and study of the tangible evidence of history, culture and natural heritage of the state of Georgia and its people.
Reopened in early 2011 following a massive expansion, the Georgia Museum of Art (F2) serves as both an academic museum and the official art museum of Georgia, a role it’s held since it was first opened in 1948, when it was in the basement of an old library on the north campus. GMOA occupies a contemporary building on the university’s east campus (pictured above).
For many decades, UGA maintained a number of natural history collections under the aegis of various academic departments. In 1978, the university recognized these collections as the Museum of Natural History (E2), and in 1999, the Georgia General Assembly recognized it as the official state museum of natural history.

in Athens. A WEEKEND IN THE CLASSIC CITY: GET OUT AND TAKE A LOOK AROUND.
FRIDAY
3:00pm
START IN THE MIDDLE
Six blocks wide and four blocks long, downtown Athens is the heart of this vibrant city and the best place to start. Across the street from UGA’s historic North Campus and venerable metal Arch, downtown is a mix of historical buildings, restaurants, specialty shops, bars, musical venues and governmental bodies. Fun, funky and thrifty finds are all for the perusing at Atomic (260 W. Clayton Street; 706-316-0130; iheartagora.com) whether you’re looking to score an old record, or a new favorite t-shirt. For some date-night duds, walk up the street to fab’rik (142 E. Clayton Street; 706-353-8005; www.fabrikstyle.com) where there’s plenty of clothing from casual to fancy available.
5:00pm
TIME FOR A COLD ONE
After an afternoon walking through downtown streets it’s time for a beverage, but where to go depends on the mood you’re in. Walker’s
Athens Welcome Center
Coffee and Pub (128 College Avenue; 706-543-1433; www.walkerscoffee. com) has plenty of wooden tables for small, or large groups. Allgood Lounge (256 E. Clayton Street; 706-549-0166; allgoodlounge.com) spans two floors and a rooftop Tiki bar, with a generous helping of large screen TVs throughout. Wherever you go remember this about Athens bars: There’s no smoking inside.
7:30pm
THE THEATRE ABIDES
None can match the view and atmosphere of the Georgia Theatre (215 N. Lumpkin Street; 706-850-7670; georgiatheatre. com). The Theatre has been a YMCA, movie theater, Masonic Temple and furniture store, but for most of the past 36 years it’s been a concert spot. A fire in 2009 gutted the historic venue, but two years of extensive renovations and the addition of a rooftop restaurant have vaulted it to the top of Athens must-see venues. The Theatre holds 1,000 people for shows in its multi-deck hall. While there, be sure to sit on the Rooftop (215 N Lumpkin Street; 706-850-7670; www.georgiatheatre. com/rooftop) where one can order a drink and food from The Branded Butcher (225 N Lumpkin Street; 706-850-5152; www.facebook.com/ thebrandedbutcher) a restaurant that focuses on local, organic produce and meat.

16 | UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA VISITOR’S GUIDE
Athens claims indoor and outdoor treasures, and depending on the weather, your weekend destination could feature furnishings from the 1850s, or bears. The T.R.R. Cobb House (175 Hill Street; 706369-3513; trrcobbhouse.org) is a 1852 home of distinctive color and octagonal wings, the home of a Confederate General and the co-founder of the UGA school of law. The house is set up to appear as it did in the 1850s, with exhibits and display cases of Cobb’s original weapons and documents. If outdoors is what you crave, Bear Hollow Zoo (293 Gran Ellen Drive; 706-613-3616) is a popular place for families, with a wildlife trail leading to homes of black bears, bobcats, snakes and alligators.
Noon
LORD LOVES GRIT
No visit to Athens is complete without a stop at The Grit (199 Prince Avenue; 706-543-6592; thegrit.com), a nationally renown vegetarian restaurant performing magical miracles with tofu on a daily basis. Located in a 19th century building around the corner from downtown, The Grit exudes a southern charm with its worn walls dotted by R.A. Miller’s scrap metal art. As for food, the brunch is highlighted by the esteemed Tofu & Veggies ($6.25), but the Grit Granola ($3.95) is also a bowlful of goodness. If you get a chance to come later in the day, the Golden Bowl ($5.50 small, $6.50 large) is an Athens tradition – browned tofu sauteed with soy sauce and nutritional yeast over brown rice. Be sure to check the chalkboard in either room for the abundant daily specials.
2:00PM
FROM ROME, ITALY TO ROME, GA.
Under the realm of UGA, the Georgia Museum of Art (90 Carlton Street; 706542-4662; georgiamuseum.org) is the state’s official art museum, showcasing works from the Italian Renaissance, American masters such as Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth, and self-taught folk artists such as Howard Finster. Renovated in 2011, GMOA expanded its main upstairs galleries and added an outdoor sculpture garden off the main lobby. Wide and expansive with rotating exhibitions and 12 distinct collections, the museum is free though a $3 donation is suggested (and well worth the price).
music is what you seek, head a block over to the 40 Watt Club (285 W. Washington Street; 706-549-7871; 40watt.com), a nationallycelebrated music venue that helped launch the careers of local legends R.E.M. and Neutral Milk Hotel.
SUNDAY
10:00Am
A HEARTY BRUNCH
Breakfast at its most Southern rests at Mama’s Boy (197 Oak Street; 706-548-6249;eatatmamasboy.com), a diner on the greenway that caters to all. Biscuits and gravy ($6.99), pulled pork and potato hash ($8.99) share space with Tofu Stir Fry ($6.99) and Georgia Peach French Toast ($7.50).
NOON
FLOWERS COVER EVERYTHING
There are several outdoor wonders throughout the Athens area, but one of constant quiet and beauty is the State Botanical Garden of Georgia (2450 S. Milledge Avenue; 706-542-1244; botgarden.uga.edu), just a few miles from the downtown but in a world all its own. The sweeping property features gardens of herbs, flowers, shade and native flora as well as heritage and international gardens. There are five miles of ranging trail and there’s no better place for a Sunday stroll.
7:30PM
FROM 24 TO FIVE...IT’S TIME!
The best American Diner style burger joint in Athens is ‘Clocked!’ Known for their organic, local and natural ingredients, free of chemicals, hormones, herbicides, pesticides, ammonia and other additives, they serve up a mean burger and side. For out of this world burgers and fries, take a spacey trip with Space Boy, their hungry burger mascot, while you try their “Meteor!Burger” and and Beer!Battered Onion Rings for $11.15! Don’t forget to try their Retro!Soda, Draft!Beer, or Shakes. (259 West Washington Street; 706-548-9175; www.clockeddiner. com) On the other side of downtown is Five Bar (269 North Hull Street, Suite 100; 706-543-5515; five-bar.com/athens) a restaurant with five snacks, five dinners, five cocktails and five white and red wines offered each day.
9:00PM

The University of Georgia boasts excellence in academics and richness in history, but an added aspect to the University’s allure can be summed up in four simple words: How ’Bout Them Dogs. The vintage slogan, which became a catch phrase for Bulldog fans worldwide, is still bandied about today and is a symbol of the University’s love for its sports. So get ready for some action, whether you chip, shoot, serve, sprint or swim.
1 Stegeman Coliseum
The site of countless Georgia men’s and women’s basketball games, Stegeman Coliseum (F4) has also hosted rhythmic gymnastics and preliminary volleyball matches during the 1996 Summer Olympics, as well as the NCAA gymnastics championships in 1989, 1995 and 2008. Built in 1964 and called the Georgia Coliseum, it was renamed in 1996 to the memory of Herman James Stegeman, former UGA athletics director. The Coliseum is two structures – the roof and the building beneath it – with the only connection between the two an aluminum bellows which seals the joints and permits the rise and fall of the roof with temperature change. PARKING
KEEP YOURSELF UP TO SPEED ON WHERE (AND WHERE NOT) TO PARK!
VISITOR PARKING
All vehicles parked on the University of Georgia campus must display a valid permit issued by the Department of Parking Services with the exception of vehicles operated by visitors and invited guests that are parked in designated visitor parking. Visitors may park in any pay lot or pay deck. Visitor lots are represented by the yellow P on the lot or facility sign. There are a total of six pay facilities and two pay per use machines on campus. All parking deck pay facilities accept credit cards. The decks are as follow: South Campus Parking Deck, North Campus Parking Deck, Tate Center Parking Deck, East Campus Parking Deck, Performing Arts Center Parking Deck and Carlton Street Parking Deck. Parking rates are as follows: $1 for 30 minutes, $3 for 30 minutes to an hour, $5 for a second hour, $1 for each additional hour after that with a $10 maximum daily fee. The fine for unauthorized parking in student, faculty or staff parking zones is $40. Visit Parking Services located at the Joe Frank Harris Commons building for more information or if you have any questions. Business hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Direct inquiries to a Customer Advocate at 706-542-PARK (7275). To park in a handicapped space, a Department of Transportation
issued handicapped tag is required. Visitors with disability permits must use pay lots where there are disability designated spaces.
FOOTBALL AND SPECIAL EVENTS
During certain special events on campus, particularly on football Saturdays, certain rules are established to limit where people can park. Resident students, staff and faculty will be directed to park only in certain areas starting Friday night through the end of the game on Saturday. Failure to comply with Gameday rules (www.parking.uga.edu/Gameday.aspx) will result in cars being towed. It is critical that students park in the designated areas to avoid towing charges issued by the university police.
CAMPUS TRANSIT
The University of Georgia Campus Transit System provides prompt, safe, reliable transportation throughout the University campus. Class-day service is provided using 37 buses on nine different routes and covering 3,500 route miles each day. A reduced schedule is operated evenings, weekends, and when classes are not in session. In addition, vans providing curbside service are available for students, staff, faculty and guests with disabilities through subscription or on demand.

DOWNTOWN & NIGHTLIFE
DOWNTOWN & NIGHTLIFE SHOPPING, EATERIES, CAFES & PEOPLE-WATCHING ARE THE LURE OF DOWNTOWN.
Downtown Athens is remembered by many for what happens once the sun goes down – one of the top events held in its streets each year is called Twilight after all. But downtown in the light of day holds its own charm, as burgeoning clothing stores rub shoulders with jewelry spots, cafes, eateries, bars and places to simply sit and people watch.
1 Shops & Boutiques
The area considered downtown is bounded on the north by Dougherty Street, on the south by Broad Street and the UGA campus, on the west by Pulaski Street, and on the east by Foundry Street. It boasts more than 65 specialty retailers, 55 eateries and 40 taverns and music venues. Looking for the latest fashion? Boutiques such as, including Fab’rik, Heery’s, Cheeky Peach and The Red Dress Boutique. Vintage shops such as Agora, Dynamite Clothing and Cillies host a variety of items for those looking to find a hidden treasure. Jewelry stores like Aurum Studios and Athena Jewelers offering wide selections, while specialty shops such as Masada Leather and Native America Gallery hold a bevy of interesting finds. 3 Performance Venues
The 40 Watt Club (A4) is one of the most famous and iconic music venues in the world. In addition to national acts, the club has served as a music home base for many of Athens’ most beloved bands over the last 35 years, including R.E.M., the B-52’s, Pylon, Love Tractor, Vic Chesnutt, Olivia Tremor Control, Five Eight, Drive-By Truckers, of Montreal, The Whigs, and more. Sitting on Lumpkin Street in the heart of downtown, the Georgia Theatre (A4) first hosted music in 1978 after years as a movie theater. A fire in the summer of 2009 shut it down, but the owners rebuilt the legendary music house and it opened again for business in August

2011. The Theatre offers a ground floor and several balconies to watch large shows, as well as a rooftop bar that regularly hosts its own set of bands. There are many other notable venues in town: The Melting Point, New Earth Music Hall, and Caledonia Lounge; though live music thrives in almost every possible storefront imaginable!

DEAR OLD UGA
DEAR OLD UGA
CAPTURING THE PERSONALITIES AND FLAVOR OF CAMPUS LIFE OVER 120 YEARS
Campus traditions, organizations, trends and transitions are explored in Dear Old U-G-A, a look at student life through the pages of The Red & Black from 1893-2013. Written by Carrol Dadisman, a former editor and publisher with KnightRidder Newspapers (and former Red & Black editor as well), Dear Old U-G-A is a 384-page tribute to the university, with more than 225 photos and thousands of references to the people who made history on campus.
DO YOU KNOW . . . ? . . . The origin of the tradition that no UGA freshman should walk under the Arch? . . . When females first applied to Georgia and when women students actually were admitted? Read on to learn the answers! Or maybe you already knew! Either way, UGA has a rich history.

DEAR OLD UGA
1 The Arch Tradition
Daniel Redfearn, a 1909 law school alumnus from Miami, traveled to Athens with only a suitcase and $156 in his pocket. When he first approached the Arch, Daniel vowed he would never go through it until he had diploma in hand. His vow, disclosed to other students by legendary professor R. E. Park, evolved into the tradition that no freshman should walk under the Arch, first noted in The Red and Black in 1919.
2 Admission of Women
In the late 1880s, the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs and Colonial Dames began petitioning for admission of women to historically all male UGA. Trustees and chancellors rejected their requests for almost 20 years before summer classes in education were offered to female teachers. Finally in 1914 Mary Dorothy Lyndon was the first summer student to receive a Master of Arts. It was four years later before
UGA admitted female undergraduates. In 1919, Mary Ethel Creswell became the first to receive a degree in home economics. Women students were governed by separate sets of rules for dress, behavior and dormitory hours and were effectively excluded from intercollegiate sports and some campus leadership positions until the 1970s.

A BOUT IQUE HOT EL W IT H HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE A new kind of hotel has arrived in Athens. Perhaps you’ve noticed we’ve made a home in the Foundry, where blacksmiths crafted famed works like the UGA Arch and the Double-Barreled Cannon. We’re located downtown and just a quick walk to the historic UGA campus. A tribute to the vibrant community we call home, Graduate Athens is home to one of the area’s best music venues, The Foundry. We also serve up the perfect cup of joe for pulling you out of a deep slumber at Iron Works. Our spa is second to none, and our rooms are unlike any hotel you’ve ever experienced. So whether you’re dropping in for a show, showing off the Alma Mater or in-town for a special happening, we’re here to make you feel like a local – even if it’s your first time in town.
