Welcome to the CIBSE Building Performance Awards »The future is a resource and carbon constrained world so

CIBSE is placing the role of performance engineering delivered by our buildings engineers at the heart of what it does. This evening we celebrated excellence in the state of the art represented here by the buildings and people contesting the awards. It is sobering to realise that we must all be able to achieve at this level of performance consistently in the not far distant future. This is why CIBSE has launched the knowledge portal, making all our knowledge available to all our members. Simultaneously we have simplified membership to allow everyone interested in building performance to join and access our accumulated knowledge and contribute to it. CIBSE will use its historic place in the industry to drive understanding and respect between the adjacent professions through the entire supply chain, from our universities at one end to site operatives at the other. We will work together to bring knowledge to where it is needed from where it already exists. Collaborating to take the exemplars represented here and make them the norm. Assisting all to share what they have learned and drive our industry to the next level. We seek to bring together all those involved in our future built environment to ensure it will be as delightful as it must be efficient. Working closely with other institutions we aim, with them, to make our knowledge the best in the world. We must make construction an attractive and exciting sector to work in to attract the best. I believe that to achieve this requires a step change in the respect we show each other and a new understanding that to accelerate our learning we must share knowledge not hide. Of course we must compete, but we must compete in what matters - the quality of delivery. Tonight we have seen the best-to-date. Let’s celebrate. Andy Ford CIBSE PRESIDENT

ENERGY-USING PRODUCT OF THE YEAR

WINNER COOL-PHASE® low-energy cooling and ventilation system, monodraught »Cool-phase is a low-energy alternative to

air-conditioning that reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 90%. The natural cooling, ventilation and heat recovery system uses ‘thermal batteries’ to capture free energy and release it when needed, with clean, fresh air. SHORTLISTED

»In addition, Cool-phase does not use coolant gases. The main materials inside the unit are ‘upcycled’ from waste byproducts of other industries, reducing land fill. The reduced running costs provide a financial incentive and rapid payback to the investment. With very low running, servicing and maintenance costs and an expected working life of up to 20 years, the system has been designed to be easy to retrofit, as well as being suitable for new build.

power is provided by the intelligent combination of ventilation, precooling the room and through active cooling using the thermal batteries. During winter the system works in reverse, removing warm, stuffy air and transferring it to cool, fresh air. Typical office applications see temperature rising throughout the day; the Cool-phase system stores this heat and uses it to preheat fresh air coming in. In addition, the system can trap waste heat from the day and release it as needed.

At night the Cool-phase unit draws in cool outside air and passes it over the thermal batteries to charge them. During daytime it will monitor both air quality and temperature, as either of these “COOL-PHASE is a novel, low changes will energy cooling system which reduces energy supply fresh air consumption for building and/or cooling to ventilation.” the space. PASSIVE (ENERGY-RELATED) PRODUCT OF THE YEAR

WINNER RACUS® Ceiling Tile, DATUm phase change »RACUS® – Reducing Air Conditioning Units

& Systems – is a passive suspended ceiling tile incorporating a bio-based phase change material (bio-PCM) made from the oil from the soya plant and fatty acids. This is the world’s first bio-based PCM ceiling tile that absorbs, stores and releases excessive latent heat gains to promote indoor comfort for occupants and also reduce the energy demand of HVAC systems.

»

Phase change materials store energy in a latent form, undergoing an endothermic process to store heat energy when ambient temperature rises and an exothermic process to release this energy when the temperature drops. In building applications, these processes occur within a narrow temperature range close to the human comfort temperature with large amounts of heat being absorbed and released. During the transition phases, the core of the microcapsule will melt as the room temperature reaches the transition temperature and in doing so will absorb latent heat where it will be stored until such time that the room temperature cools to around 20°C. The RACUS ceiling tile was developed for new and retrofit building projects and is manufactured in two formats: a preformed mineral tile incorporating

various abundant minerals which encapsulate the bio-PCM microcapsules; and a metal ceiling tile which is predominantly used in commercial buildings and is a composite panel assembly comprising of a solid or acoustic metal tile with an insert. It uses an organic microencapsulated phase change material that has twice the heat storage capacity of alternatives, and is the only bio-PCM available that biodegrades within 12 months. The tile has been installed at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, where the product has contributed to significant energy savings, as well as at Ofcom's head office and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

COMMISSIONING PROJECT OF THE YEAR

WINNER The Darling Quarter project, Sydney (Norman Disney & Young) »Commissioning is often squeezed out in

the dash to practical completion. The result is that projects often fail to fulfil their promise because they are not set up to succeed. Norman Disney & Young’s work on the Darling Quarter project in Sydney, Australia, demonstrated how commissioning should be planned and managed to deliver buildings that perform to expectations.

»Norman Disney & Young’s submission set out how they had undertaken the commissioning management of the entire 1.5 hectare Darling Quarter project site. It set out the organisation, scheduling, resource and quality planning and the delivery of documents for the project, following the industry best practice guidance set out in the CIBSE Commissioning Management Code and the system specific Codes. Norman Disney & Young worked with all the parties involved to update the plan as work progressed in line with changes made during delivery of the project, and to take into account field conditions and the actual products, components and systems installed on the project. The Management Plan covered the design, construction, commissioning, acceptance and occupancy phases of the project, to

deliver to the client comfortable, sustainable and energy-efficient buildings that meet client and occupant expectations fully. In addition to their role as commissioning manager for the base buildings on the development, Norman Disney & Young also acted as the commissioning agent for the fit out phases of the project, including the two data centres that were contained within the buildings. This entailed developing specific commissioning, performance testing and verification of the data centres and their critical systems.

“The judges considered the Norman Disney & Young entry an excellent example of commissioning on a largescale development, and a worthy winner of the CIBSE Commissioning Project of the Year Award.”

LOW CARBON CONSULTANT OF THE YEAR

WINNER Andrew Gardner »This Award recognises an outstanding

contribution to low carbon performance and the winner has been selected based on carbon return forms submitted by CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants.

»

The Register of Low Carbon Consultants was developed by CIBSE, supported by the Carbon Trust, to provide the market with a supply of professionals whose competence in low carbon design and operation has been tested and is registered. Registered consultants advise on both design and operation of commercial buildings to the highest energy efficiency standard and ensure compliance with Part L. By driving down carbon emissions within the built environment CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants, and Low Carbon Energy Assessors, offer more than compliance, providing recommendations to achieve a greater sustainable environment. The Low Carbon Consultant of the Year Award recognises measured energy performance and carbon

reduction achievements by CIBSEregistered Low Carbon Consultants. Each consultant is invited to submit a list of the projects that they have worked on and the carbon savings that they have achieved on each project, and to explain the measures that they have used to deliver the savings. This year’s winner has worked for several large and prestigious clients on a number of their buildings, looking for ways to reduce the energy they use and reduce their carbon emissions and carbon reduction commitment liabilities. He specialises in the installation of combined heat and power systems in larger retail buildings, and through his work he has designed a number of installations for larger retail premises.

“Andrew Gardner’s carbon returns show that over the year he helped his clients to save approximately 61 tonnes of carbon dioxide through his work as a CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant.”

COLLABORATIVE WORKING AWARD

WINNER Harrods »With a world-famous food hall comprising

hundreds of cold rooms and display cases, the department store sought a new refrigeration system that was safe, energy efficient, environmentally friendly, robust and resilient. It therefore collaborated with a seven-partner team over an 18-month period to find a solution.

»

It became apparent that the commonly used HFC refrigerants would come under increasing pressure due to their high global warming potential. A carbon dioxide refrigerant operating as a transcritical installation was a proven alternative, with examples of successful installations in operation elsewhere in Europe. Field visits to sites were undertaken to establish the viability of the system.

CLIENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT AWARD

WINNER BRITISH LAND » British Land manages, owns, finances and

develops prime commercial property. The company has set challenging targets that include reducing energy intensity across its entire managed portfolio by 20% per square metre by 2011/12, compared to a 2008/09 baseline.

» Following an award-winning pilot at British Land's multi-occupied head office, a new advanced metering system and optimisation process – the first of its kind for a UK property company – has been rolled out at nine office buildings and two shopping centres. The process, provided by EP&T Global, delivers continuous measurement, monitoring, management and priority grading. It gives access to granular data through extensive sub-metering; electricity, gas and water data is uploaded automatically to a central system online every 15 minutes; and a remote diagnostic service provides regular alerts and reports. Already, savings are being seen ahead of schedule in most buildings, with a total reduction of 9% in base-building consumption (common areas and shared

services) for the period from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011 compared to the year before. Across the seven existing buildings, this has saved 3 million kWh, more than 1,300 tonnes of carbon and almost £250,000.

NEW BUILD PROJECT OF THE YEAR PUBLIC SECTOR

WINNER Max Fordham »The brief for the new John Hope Gateway project at Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh was to create a building that could both tell the story of the garden and educate people about the harm we are doing to plants and biodiversity. The approach involved close collaboration between the architect (Edward Cullinan Architects), building services engineer (Max Fordham) and structural engineer (Buro Happold). The result was an energy-efficient building that has achieved an ‘A’ rated EPC.

A combination of stack and cross driven ventilation is used, and the building has improved levels of insulation by around 25% compared to current Building Regulations. The primary source of heat is a lowcarbon biomass boiler which is fuelled by wood, while all toilets and urinals use rainwater.

At a very early design stage, Max Fordham worked alongside the A 6kW vertical axis wind turbine can architect to engineer optimum levels potentially generate around 8,500 of light for both people and the kWh of electricity per year. CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR

WINNER IMTECH Aqua Ltd »A major redevelopment project at Anglia Ruskin University, located within Cambridge City Centre, split the campus in two and was carried out while the university remained fully operational.

» This was the most ambitious project ever undertaken by the university and the team was highly commended for demonstrating a positive and proactive approach to successfully meeting all of the challenges presented. VolkerFitzpatrick was the main contractor and Cunnington Clark the building services consultant. Imtech Aqua was appointed as the design-and-build mechanical and electrical services contractor following a robust, single-stage tender process that included a comprehensive value engineering process which generated in excess of £400,000 of potential savings. Planning requirements dictated that 10% of the building’s energy should be generated through renewable technologies and this formed a key element of the ongoing design philosophy, which provided a continuing focus throughout the selection and procurement process. Technologies integrated into the design include: combined heat and power; solar PV; LED lighting; and Passivent, interlinked with the BMS to provide nighttime cooling.

As a result, the project achieved a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating, in line with the client’s aspirations. As part of the team’s enhanced offering to the client it identified and offered fully costed proposals for the building to attain a BREEAM 'excellent' rating. Key collaborative initiatives used included: a collaborative 3D coordination model which identified pinch points in coordination and builders' work planning; the presentation of value engineering options using a ‘traffic light’ system to highlight areas of opportunity; the co-location of the main contractor and key trade contractors in the same project office; and early involvement and integration of the supply chain.

“The judges were impressed by the way in which Imtech had delivered a complex project that was critical to the functioning of the client’s business and had enormous potential to disrupt the operation of the university.”

Twenty-six sites have voluntary display energy certificates (DECs). Investment in regional server room metering in 2010 has also led to an increase in the use of DEC separables and rating improvements. From 2008-11, the 21 comparable sites have reduced annual utility bills by £270,000.

Three solar PV installations output around 48,000kWh of electricity per year, with ground source heat pumps included at Pier Walk and five solar thermal installations due for 2011. At the Palestra building in Southwark in 2008 an 845kWe gas combined heat and power (CHP) and a 200kWe fuel cell CHP connected to a thermal store and absorption chiller system were installed, designed to form part of a future local district heating network.

QUINTA ECO PLUS COMMERCIAL HEATING & HOT WATER SYSTEMS

revolutionary thinking from Remeha Low Carbon Best Practice from the Pioneers of Condensing Technology Introducing the Quinta Eco Plus, the revolutionary new heating and hot water system from Remeha. The Quinta Eco Plus can achieve up to 48% lower carbon emissions and fuel savings than typical ‘best practice’ systems, delivering an overall system efficiency of 97% GCV at 82/71°C. By incorporating Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery technology, the Quinta Eco Plus heating system recovers normally wasted energy equivalent to around 15% of the gross input energy. This can be used for driving additional radiators, underfloor heating or preheating DHWS. This maximum efficiency can only normally be achieved by condensing boilers with constant running of the total system at low temperatures, 50/30°C or less. The Quinta Eco Plus gives you maximum ‘full time condensing’ efficiencies, irrespective of primary circuit temperatures, making it the perfect solution for a wide range of commercial heating requirements where 100% low temperature circuits are not possible.
