Texas A&M sport clubs association EST. 1974: OVER 40 YEARS OF SPORT CLUBS AT TEXAS A&M

The Texas A&M Sport Clubs Association provides the opportunity to compete against clubs from other collegiate institutions at the state, regional, or national level in 36 different sports, and allows members to learn or enhance their skills in a recreational setting. Each club is administered by students, has practice times and facilities, and receives some monetary support. To help subsidize the cost of travel and equipment, clubs may charge dues and participate in fund-raising activities.

While the Sport Clubs staff and the Department of Recreational Sports assist clubs in securing needed funds, facilities and equipment, the emphasis is on student leadership and development. Students are directly responsible for all aspects of operating and managing a successful, competitive organization. As a result, Sport Clubs present a unique opportunity for students to develop both athletic and leadership abilities.

Since 1974, the Sport Clubs program has captured over 230 overall team and single-event national championships and hundreds of conference championships. For more information, the names of current club representatives, and Sport Clubs event schedules, visit the Sport Clubs Office in the Rec Center (room 250), call 979.862.1996, e-mail sportclubs@rec.tamu.edu, or visit our website at recsports.tamu.edu.

Rec Expansion/Renovation Since the opening of the Student Recreation Center more than twenty years ago, the Texas A&M student body has increased by twenty-five percent and continues to grow substantially. With an average of over 1.2 million entries per year, the Rec Center has essentially operated at capacity from the beginning. In order to address this problem and accommodate a larger portion of the student body, Rec Sports embarked upon an extensive expansion/renovation of the Rec Center.

New Gymnasium

The $55 million expansion/renovation project includes 120,000 square feet of new construction, increasing the size of the Rec Center to over 400,000 square feet. This includes 56,000 square feet of renovation to existing space. The project was funded without an increase in the Recreational Sports fee!

The expansion & renovation of the Texas A&M Student Recreation Center New Activity/Space

Strength & Conditioning Area

will place it among the nation’s top collegiate recreational facilities.

@Recsports

Expansion/Renovation Details Strength & Conditioning Area

The new Strength & Conditioning Area will increase from 14,500 square feet to just over 30,000 square feet. The free weight area will be 10,000+ square feet, the selectorized/ machine strength equipment area will be approximately 5,500 square feet, and the cardio equipment area will house over eighty pieces of cardio equipment. Inside the Strength & Conditioning Area will be a small, indoor turf area for warmup, movement training, and stretching. A personal and small group training suite will also be located in the room. New restrooms will be located in the front entrance of the space.

New Gymnasium (Now Open!)

This new space includes two new basketball courts that can be converted into four volleyball courts, six badminton courts, or an indoor soccer court.

Outdoor Terrace (Now Open!)

The new terrace was created to provide a shaded lounge area for students and includes outdoor furniture, outdoor kitchen space, and additional restrooms. The 16,000 square foot plaza is located directly on the roof of the expanded Strength and Conditioning Area.

Indoor Lap Pool (Now Open!)

The new lap pool features an 8-lane, 25-yard shallow water pool, providing another option for our members and guests to meet their swimming workout needs. This pool will be an essential resource for all swimming activities, including swimming classes for the Kinesiology Department and Rec swim for our members and guests, especially when we host large swim meets. Please visit www.recsports4u.com for the latest updates.

Activity/Fitness Space

This space includes two new activity/fitness rooms that are approximately 2,000 square feet each; a 3,500 square foot event room that will be available for department activities, programming, fitness classes and meeting room space; a 6,000 square foot event room that will be used for banquets and large presentations; and a smaller meeting room for approximately eighty people that will be used for student staff and department meetings. The 6,000 square foot room will have the option to be divided into two 3,000 square foot rooms. All rooms include up-to-date audio and/or visual equipment. Another new addition is a 1,200 square foot heavy bag room that will be used for boxing technique, with three heavy bags and three or four speed bags that will be used for high intensity training.
