Texas A&M sport clubs association

EST. 1974: OVER 40 YEARS OF SPORT CLUBS AT TEXAS A&M The Texas A&M Sport Clubs Association provides the opportunity to compete against clubs from other collegiate institutions at the state, regional, or national level in 34 different sports, and allows members to learn or enhance their skills in a recreational setting. Each club is administered by students, has practice times and facilities, and receives some monetary support. To help subsidize the cost of travel and equipment, clubs may charge dues and participate in fund-raising activities.

CLUB Archery Baseball Bowling Cheer Squad Crew Cycling Fencing Gymnastics Handball

While the Sport Clubs staff and the Department of Recreational Sports assist clubs in securing needed funds, facilities and equipment, the emphasis is on student leadership and development. Students are directly responsible for all aspects of operating and managing a successful, competitive organization. As a result, Sport Clubs present a unique opportunity for students to develop both athletic and leadership abilities.

Since 1974, the Sport Clubs program has captured over 200 overall team and singleevent national championships and hundreds of conference championships. For more information, the names of current club representatives, and Sport Clubs event schedules, visit the Sport Clubs Office in the Rec Center (room 250), call 979.862.1996, e-mail sportclubs@rec.tamu.edu, or visit our website at recsports.tamu.edu.

Expansion update Construction continues but the end is in sight. Our most recent information indicates that the substantial completion date for the Rec Center expansion will be summer 2016. The weather stayed relatively nice for our construction team in the fall, allowing us to make good headway toward completion. With great progress, an enclosed gym is starting to form, and with the roof deck complete, we will begin interior work. On the north side, the weight room expansion and second-level plaza are finally beginning to take shape. The largest improvement to the north side in the fall was the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) work. MEP construction is not easy to see for patrons walking by, but it is necessary to allow good circulation throughout the different areas of the building. Walls and large windows should be going up soon on the north side, so the workers can begin dry-in construction. Also, second floor columns will be going up soon for the plaza near the north side entrance. The new indoor pool has been poured near the new south side entrance, and more work will be going into that area during the spring. The lighting retrofit and re-roofing was completed during the fall semester. The Rec has gone green, replacing all the lights with efficient LEDs and repairing our original roofing for better insulation, fewer leaks, and a renewed warranty. All usual areas of the Rec will be available for use during the spring semester, but no new openings will occur. To access the outdoor pool, be sure to use the west entrance. Want to know more about the Rec Sports expansion? Get the latest updates at www.recsports4u.com!

main staircase to banquet room

Although the Rec Center will remain open throughout the expansion process, and interruption to member access should be minimal, some facilities and programs may be unavailable at times. The expansion and renovation project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2016. Upon completion, the Texas A&M Student Recreation Center will be among the nation’s top collegiate recreational facilities.

Rec Center Expansion facts Since the opening of the Student Recreation Center almost twenty years ago, the Texas A&M student body has increased by twentyfive percent and continues to grow substantially. With an average of over 1.2 million entries per year, the Rec Center has essentially operated at capacity from the beginning. In order to address this problem and accommodate a larger portion of the student body, Rec Sports has embarked upon an extensive expansion/renovation of the Rec Center. The $55 million expansion/renovation project includes 113,000 square feet of new construction, which will increase the size of the Rec Center by twenty-five percent, and 56,000 square feet of renovation. The project is being funded without an increase in the Recreational Sports fee!

For all the latest updates visit:

www.recsports4u.com

Specific improvements to the facility: Increased Strength & Conditioning Space The size of the current weight room, which houses both strength and cardio equipment, will be doubled and will include the addition of a personal training suite and an indoor turf area for movement training such as agility and speed work, plyometrics, body weight and core training exercises. Additional Gymnasium The addition of a new gymnasium will increase open-recreation opportunities by adding multi-use court space that can accommodate 2 basketball courts, 4 volleyball courts and 1 soccer court. New Activity Rooms Three new activity rooms will be added to provide additional space for Group RecXercise classes, Specialty Classes and heavy bag/ boxing activities. Two larger, multi-use rooms will be constructed to accommodate student groups and outside events, and a large, auditorium-style meeting room seating approximately 120 will also be added.

weight room expansion

Second Entrance An additional entrance will be built on the south side of the facility, facing Olsen Field. Outdoor Plaza An outdoor plaza will be constructed on top of the expanded weight and fitness room and will include a large patio with outdoor kitchen facilities. Additional Pool An eight-lane, twenty-five-yard indoor lap pool will be added to reduce scheduling conflicts with aquatic events in the natatorium. Natatorium Renovation (COMPLETED) Retrofitting of all mechanical components, as well as cosmetic upgrades including new tile, paint, lighting, bleachers, etc. will be completed. Lighting Retrofit (COMPLETED) All light fixtures will be replaced throughout the facility to improve light efficiency and reduce energy costs.

Let our nationally-certified personal trainers develop a comprehensive exercise program specifically for you! Our personal trainers can assess your fitness goals, develop a workout plan for you, teach you how to properly perform resistance training and cardiovascular conditioning exercises, and keep you motivated. To register for personal training services, visit the Member Services Desk or call 979.862.7443.

Wondering just how fit you are? Let one of our personal trainers complete a personal fitness assessment with you. Our integrated fitness assessment includes mobility and stability screening as well as measuring body fat percentage, circumferences, resting heart rate, blood pressure, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness and flexibility. This assessment will serve as the foundation upon which a program focusing specifically on your individual needs and goals can be designed.

Due to the expansion and renovation of our main strength and conditioning space, the weight and fitness room is now located on courts 1 & 2 in the Student Recreation Center. Although the situation is not optimal, we assure you that we have done our best to set up this temporary location to accommodate our members’ needs! We will still be able to provide almost all of the strength and cardio equipment that was previously located in the weight and fitness room including: a wide variety of cardiovascular equipment, a large free weight area, all of our plate loaded and pin select strength machines, and an area for stability balls, medicine balls, ab/core training, and stretching. Our strength and conditioning staff is always available to help you learn how to properly use the equipment, give you exercise advice, or even give you a spot during a lift. Members of our Strength & Conditioning staff are always present and willing to assist you. So, if you have any questions or need some guidance, just ask!
