Things to Remember... • Most currently-enrolled students are already members! Just show your ID to gain access to the facility. • Only beverages in resealable plastic containers are allowed in the Rec! Food is only allowed in the lounge area. • Please respect the privacy of others and refrain from photographing individuals

in the facility.

• Towels are required in the weight and fitness room.

Every year, Rec Sports offers dozens of different intramural events that are open to all Texas A&M students and Rec Sports members. And you don’t have to be a star athlete to play! With several different divisions, you can select your level of skill and play alongside others at your level.

Sport Descriptions Basketball Played at the Student Recreation Center, this sport is offered for Men’s, Women’s, CoRec, Corps and Fraternity leagues. Each team is comprised of 5 players, and NFHS rules are used with some A&M modifications.

Outdoor Soccer Played at the Penberthy Rec Sports Complex on both natural and artificial turf, this sport is offered for Men’s, Women’s, CoRec, Corps and Fraternity leagues. Each team is comprised of 8 players on the field (including goalie). NFHS soccer rules are applied with some A&M modifications.

4-on-4 Flag Football Played at the Penberthy Rec Sports Complex on natural grass, this sport is offered for Men’s, Women’s and CoRec leagues. This sport is a passing sport, and each team is comprised of 4 players. NIRSA rules will be used with some A&M modifications.

Softball Played at the Penberthy Rec Sports Complex on natural grass turf, this sport is offered for Men’s, Women’s and CoRec leagues. Each team is comprised of 10 players (may use additional hitter to bat 11 players). CoRec teams are comprised of 5 players of each gender (may use two additional hitters to bat 12 players). for all teams, and for safety, teams must use bats provided by the intramural program only. Gloves are also available for checkout.

Sand Volleyball Played at the Student Recreation Center outdoor volleyball courts, this sport is offered for Men’s, Women’s and CoRec leagues. Each team is comprised of 4 players (2 of each gender for CoRec teams). Games are governed by USA Volleyball beach rules and use rally scoring in each game.

Battleship This newest intramural sport is played in half of the 50M pool at the Student Rec Center Natatorium and will feature teams that can be made up of any combination of male and female players. All teams will be in the same league no matter the number of each gender. Teams will consist of no more and no less than 4 players. All participants in this sport should be able to swim and must wear proper pool attire. Prepare to sink your opponents’ battleship!

Kickball Played at the Penberthy Rec Sports Complex, this double elimination tournament will be comprised of Men’s, Women’s and CoRec teams. Teams consist of 8 players (CoRec teams may not have more than 4 of one gender on the field).

How to sign up a team

of the Student Recreation Center. Registration times are listed on the calendar of events. Each team or individual must complete the entry card available in the lobby. You must provide the name of a captain with his/her UIN, phone number and e-mail address. Each captain must be a member of the team and will automatically be placed on the roster. You will also need an alternate captain’s (team manager) name, phone number, and e-mail address if signing up for a team sport.

League Format and Days of play

Most team sports are divided into three divisions: Men’s, Women’s and CoRec. Those divisions are then subdivided into two classes: Competitive and Recreational. A team may sign up in the division that fits the style of team they are forming. Competitive is described as most team members being moderately to highly skilled players in the sport. Recreational is designed to be geared more toward novice to moderately skilled athletes in the respective sport. When signing up, you will choose the day of play for your regular season games. All three of your season games will generally be played on the same day and time that you sign up for. At the completion of the regular season, all teams will then advance to a single elimination tournament where days of play may change. Individual and dual sports, along with tournaments, vary in competition format. Contact the intramural office for more information.

Eligibility

In order to participate in intramural sports, a person must be a Rec member. This includes all Texas A&M students who have signed up for classes and paid the required Rec Sports fee, as well as faculty/staff who have purchased a semester or yearly Rec Sports membership. Monthly, weekly, and/or daily passes to the Rec Center do not count as memberships and do not serve as a way to participate in intramural sports. Eligible participants may only participate on one (1) single gender and one (1) CoRec team in each sport.

Captain’s information

Captains are responsible for all operations of their team. If you choose to serve as captain, please make sure that you are able to communicate with your team. The captain will need to communicate all information provided by the intramural office, understand the policies and procedures of intramural sports, complete required captain’s quizzes, promote good sportsmanship for his/her team, check game updates and playoff brackets to know when the team plays, and take responsibility for all defaults and/or forfeits his/her team incurs.

Intramural Sports is HIRING! Are you looking for a FUN JOB that allows you to make new friends, work flexible hours (NO Fridays and Saturdays) and earn money? If so, become an Intramural sports official! No experience is necessary, and paid training will be provided. Even if you have never played a sport before, you will be taught how to officiate it. Attend one of the Informational Meetings listed below to learn more.

High energy, water workout geared to the fitness enthusiast that wants a powerful, efficient, safe workout in the water using the water properties of buoyancy and drag to increase the heart rate, jump start the metabolism and build muscle and core strength. This isn’t your “Grandma’s workout”!

Get down to business with 60 minutes of straight, no-nonsense cardiovascular workout! With a variety of formats such as step, kickbox, BOSU, gliders and jump-rope, you will always be challenged. Abs and stretching included.

Cardio Step Mix / Cardio Step Mix Express

Get ready to mix it up! This class is perfect for the stepper looking for something new. Fun step combinations will torch calories and get your heart pumping! (Cardio Step Mix, 60 minutes; Cardio Step Mix Express, 45 minutes.)

Forty Five minute cardio workout that will wake you up and get your day started! Easy to follow cardio moves using the BOSU, jump rope, step, or stability balls. Each class is different, challenging, and fun!!!! Start your day off with this energetic workout.

Cardio Water

Enjoy this non-impact environment to gain cardiovascular fitness and strength in shallow water (4 ft. deep) using tubing, hand buoys and noodles for added resistance. Non-swimmers welcome. Lifeguard on duty.

Deep Water

If you like water workouts, you’ll love working in the deep water. A more challenging water experience, this class will focus on a cardio and core workout. A buoyancy belt and water cuffs are provided for maximum efficiency in the water. Give this a try!

H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training)

This is a non-stop, powerhouse workout that is guaranteed to burn calories and get your heart pumping. H.I.I.T will include cardio intervals using the step, BOSU, jump rope, and floor drills.

Just Cardio

Get down to business with 45 minutes of straight, no-nonsense cardiovascular workout! With a variety of formats such as step, kickbox, BOSU, gliders and jump-rope, you will always be challenged. Cardio junkies, this class is for you!

Kickbox / Kickbox Express

Power Strength Remix

Challenge yourself to an integrated cardio and strength workout. This kick-butt workout consists of high intensity drills that will push you to the limit. A variety of equipment and exercise techniques will be used. Burn more calories, build more strength, and leave feeling empowered! Abs and stretching included.

Super Step

Maximize your metabolism with 30 minutes of exciting, advanced step choreography and 20 minutes of resistance training using balls, body bars, tubing and weights. Abs and stretching included. Prior step experience necessary.

Triple Threat / Triple Threat Express

This is the ultimate mental and physical challenge with a creative blend of cardio, strength and balance intervals. Equipment may include the step, BOSU, stability ball, medicine ball, body bar, weights or resistance tubing. Abs and stretching included. (Triple Threat, 60 minutes; Triple Threat Express, 45 minutes.)

INDOOR CYCLE CLASSES

CSI (Cycle Strength Intervals) New!

An indoor cycle workout with innovation resistance training intervals using the Corepole, body weight, hand weights, body bar and medicine balls. The best of cardio and strength plus abs and stretching.

30 minutes of indoor cycling in your target heart rate zone. Heart rate monitors provided. Towel and water required.

Piloxing uniquely mixes Pilates and boxing into a fat burning, muscle sculpting workout. This class blends power, speed and agility with sculpting and flexibility. A 45-minute workout guaranteed to keep you coming back for more!

Cycle 2

This 50-minute ride in your target heart rate zone promises to have you reaching for a towel. Heart rate monitors provided. Towel and water required.

Sunday Cycle 30 minutes of indoor cycling in your target heart rate zone. Heart rate monitors provided. Towel and water required.

Total Training

A total training experience including cycling, high energy cardio, and strength training.

Focusing on strength, body alignment, and flexibility, it reinforces your previous dance experience while working on performance and technique. Previous experience is strongly encouraged.

This beginner class will teach graceful arm and hand movements, undulations, isolations, and hip rotations, with a concentration on abdominal strength and whole-body conditioning. As the class progresses, students will learn stage presence, floor work, costuming, and identifying Middle Eastern rhythms. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a scarf or shawl to wrap your hips.

Belly Dancing II will explore further dance moves and rhythms that can be used to create your own unique and artistic dances. Students will learn to build upon skills they have previously mastered and will be introduced to new styles and movements. Mind/Body CLASSES Intro to Hatha Yoga

Have you always wanted to try Yoga? The goal of this class is to introduce the fundamentals of yoga in a relaxed environment. While educational and fitness oriented, you can expect a stressreducing practice that leaves you feeling renewed and revitalized. Mats are provided; bring personal mats at your own preference.

Power Yoga

Power yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that proceeds faster through each flow of movement, creating a more challenging option for students. Qigong is a 7,000-year-old Chinese system of healing and empowerment that integrates gentle movement, sounds, visualization, and meditation into a synergistic practice promoting mental clarity, emotional balance and physical health. Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga New!

Add another dimension to your yoga workout and give this new five session floating yoga clinic a try! Gain a new perspective and awareness of your poses while balancing on a paddleboard. Spring Break BootCamp (Startup & Extreme)

More sessions, more results, more fun! Spring Break BootCamp is a 6-week program designed to take your fitness to the next level with Spring Break in mind! Spring Break BootCamp will meet three days per week. Two days per week will be held outdoors with activities such as running, power-walking, plyometrics and cardiovascular drills. The third day will be held inside and will be dedicated to resistance training. Spring Break BootCamp is a great way to get in shape and have fun doing it!

Bikini FitCamp New!

Two nationally certified Booty Barre instructors present a new indoor workout focusing on that bikini body you hope to have by Spring Break and summer. This program will meet twice a

week. Ballet and Pilates inspired exercises tone the arms, chest, abdominals, glutes and legs. Bikini FitCamp will incorporate a variety of equipment including ballet barre, Pilates ball, Pilates rings, bands, small hand weights, and gliding discs. Bikini FitCamp will emphasize resistance training with some cardio.

BootCamp Session 2 (Startup & Extreme)

F.I.T. (Fitness Instructor Training)

An 18-hour training course for fitness enthusiasts that aspire to instruct group exercise classes. This course emphasizes the actual physical instruction and activity. A booklet, online quizzes, and a music CD are provided. Participants will learn how to choreograph combinations, hear and move to the beat of the music, cue, incorporate proper body alignment, use resistance apparatus effectively and safely, and warm up and cool down properly. Course dates are Feb. 16 and 24, March 3 and 24, April 7 and 14. The course is followed by Group Exercise Instructor Auditions on April 20. Special attention will be given to those that complete the course.

Master’s Program

Basic SCUBA Referral

Learn to swim with an experienced instructor in a safe and comfortable environment. The Master’s Program is designed for people who are looking for a structured swim workout. It’s a program for all skill levels, provided you are able to swim in deep water. Each class session will feature a different workout administered by a coach. Coaches will also be able to help participants with stroke refinement and turns.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Lifeguard Instructor Certification Course

The purpose of this course is to train lifeguard instructor candidates to teach the Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission courses and/or modules. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, and Basic Water Rescue.

Lifeguard Training

This American Red Cross certification course will teach you first aid, surveillance skills, rescue skills, auto external defibrillation, professional rescuer CPR, and oxygen administration.

Lifeguard/CPR Review

The Lifeguard/CPR Review will test out lifeguards who were once certified and need to renew their lifeguard and/or CPRFPR certifications. Participants who do not pass the challenge will need to sign up for a full CPR Professional Rescuer course and Lifeguard course.

Scuba Classes and referral dives PROGRAM

Become a SCUBA diver with this certification course that will allow you to SCUBA dive anywhere in the world. This program allows participants who have completed the classroom and confined water components of Basic SCUBA to complete their training and receive their certification.

Advanced SCUBA

This certification course is designed for divers who have completed a basic course and desire advanced instruction and an introduction to specialty diving.

Advanced SCUBA Referral

Referral dive students are students that have previously completed part of their certification requirements and wish to finish the process with Rec Center instructors.

Emergency First Response First Aid/CPR

This course is for Rescue Diver students who are not currently certified in First Aid and CPR.

Rescue SCUBA

This certification course includes all aspects of SCUBA safety and diver rescue. Students must complete first aid and CPR prior to certification.

Rescue SCUBA Referral

Referral dive students are students that have previously completed part of their certification requirements and wish to finish the process with Rec Center instructors.

Enriched Air (Nitrox) SCUBA

This course will teach students about the benefits, problems, equipment considerations, and other information they will need in order to dive using enriched air (nitrox). Successful completion of this course will allow students to be able to plan and make safe no decompression dives with enriched air nitrox blends containing 22% - 40% oxygen.

Kayaking 101 Clinic: An Intro to the Eskimo Roll Learn, practice and refine your kayak roll in the tranquil, clearblue water at the Rec Center. Outdoor Adventures staff will provide instruction on the fundamentals of the wet exit and the Eskimo Roll.

Need a break from the hot weather of Texas for your spring break? Join Outdoor Adventures for a downhill skiing adventure at the Wolf Creek Ski Area. Wolf Creek is located in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado and is a high alpine ski resort, 10,300 feet at the base and 11,900 feet at the summit. It is widely known for its abundant snowfall – when all of Colorado is dry or snow-deprived, Wolf Creek manages to have feet of snow waiting to be skied or boarded on. All skill levels are welcome and professional lessons are available.

Join Outdoor Adventures on a Spring Break climbing adventure to America’s top bouldering site. If you’ve never climbed our indoor climbing wall before, we recommend you come in for an orientation class. Learn everything you need to know to climb safely. Belaying skills, knots, commands, safety tips, equipment usage and more. Orientation classes are taught Monday through Friday at 4pm and 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm.

Climbing Basics Orientation Classes

If you want to take your climbing to the next level through working with one of our certified climbing instructors, then this class is for you. These 1.5-hour sessions are designed to be whatever you need them to be. We have worked with climbers on movement technique, strength building, climbing endurance and technical skill. Plan a 1-on-1 session if you are ready to get serious about improving your climbing skills!

Even with no experience, you can join us for an introduction to the exciting sport of rock climbing. This four-hour course covers basic knots and rope handling techniques, protection and belaying systems and a variety of climbing movement techniques. After successful completion of the skills check, you will be eligible to purchase a climbing pass to use the facility.

Climbing for Fitness (Specialty Class)

Yoga and climbing are the perfect match, so why not learn them both in one class? Climbing applies the same balance, core strength, flexibility and focus on breathing that Yoga teaches. Blending beginning level climbing movement with introductory yoga, each week participants will be introduced to progressively challenging movement and technique in both disciplines. Whether you are new to both disciplines, a climber looking to improve balance and flexibility, or a non-climber looking to try a new twist on fitness in a non-competitive, non-intimidating environment, this is the class for you!

It’s more than just a monolith in the middle of the Rec; the Indoor Climbing Facility is your next fitness tool. Even if you’ve never climbed before, our certified instructors will teach you the basics then begin using your climbing skills to get you in shape. This class blends traditional floor exercises with climbing to give you a full-body workout. Different weeks will focus on improving endurance, strength, balance and movement. Once you’re finished with this class, you’ll have the skills you need to make rock climbing the next tool in your overall fitness arsenal. Once you’ve mastered top rope climbing, your next step is the more advanced skill of lead climbing. This skill set answers the question, “How do they get the ropes up there in the first place?” We’ll show you how to do it and make sure you’re safe. This skill set is a must for taking your own trips climbing outdoors. Learn the advanced techniques involved in lead climbing, including knots, clipping, how to belay a leader, and the physics of falling. PREREQUISITES: Current rock wall skills check and the ability to consistently top rope climb multiple routes at grade 5.9+ or higher. Class limit 9.

CPR classes Heartsaver CPR/AED

Learn CPR, AED use, relief of choking in adults and children, and use of barrier devices for all ages. This class is for those who respond to cardiac emergencies because of job or regulatory requirements.

Heartsaver CPR/AED & First Aid

This course covers general principles, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, CPR and AED, and environmental emergencies. It is

for those who respond to first aid or cardiac emergencies because of job or regulatory requirements.

BLS for Healthcare Provider

Learn adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction, and AED use. This class is for healthcare providers who must have a credential (card) documenting successful completion of a CPR course.

Becoming a Rec Member and gaining access to everything Rec Sports has to offer is easy!

Rec Memberships Students Most students taking one or more semester hours automatically become Rec Members when they register and pay the Rec Sports Fee. Students who do not meet this criteria are required to purchase a membership in order to use the Rec Sports facilities and participate in certain programs. Continuing student memberships are also available.

Non-Students Besides students, the following individuals are eligible to purchase a membership: current and retired Texas A&M staff members; spouses of current Texas A&M students, staff members, or retired staff members; adult dependents (age 18–25) of current Texas A&M students, staff members, or retired staff members; and dependent children (age 3–17) of current Texas A&M students, staff members, or retired staff members (with some restrictions). Current employees may pay for their membership through payroll deduction. Membership rates are: • $375 / annual • $275 / two semesters • $150 / one semester • $106 / per semester for a student spouse

Continuing Students • $106 / one semester • $53 / one summer session

Former Students & Friends The Former Students & Friends Membership is available to anyone who is registered with The Association of Former Students. To be eligible for this membership, the person must either: 1. Have received an advanced or honorary degree from Texas A&M University, or 2. Be a current contributor to The Association of Former Students Membership rates are: • $500 / annual • $365 / two semesters • $200 / one semester The Member Service Manager will verify proof of current membership within The Association of Former Students. If an individual is rendered ineligible, they will be refunded their membership minus a $50 administrative fee.

Rec Sports has a variety of indoor and outdoor sports equipment available for groups and individuals to use. Most equipment is available free of charge, while other items have a nominal rental charge. Patrons are responsible for damages to items that are rented or checked out.

Facility Rentals

Planning a special event? Let us help! Our facilities are perfect for weddings, banquets, group meetings and more, and a full beverage service is available. See page 6 for details. Also available for rent are The Student Recreation Center, Read Building, G. Rollie White Annex, Disc Golf Course, Duncan Field, tennis courts, and East Campus fields. If your group is planning an activity, please inquire about facility availability well in advance. Requests for facility reservations should be submitted at least two weeks in advance.

Lightning Prediction System

In the event of dangerous conditions, the lightning prediction system will give one long horn blast (approximately 15 seconds) accompanied by a flashing light. Once the dangerous conditions have passed, three short horn blasts will sound that all is clear and the flashing lights will cease. In the event of a system warning please seek shelter.

In order to ensure that Rec Sports delivers high quality services in a fun and positive environment, we have instituted general policies that should be followed by participants. Violation of policies or behavior deemed inappropriate may result in a suspension or loss of membership.

Lockers

Full, half, and box-size lockers may be rented for the entire year or by the semester. Any open lockers are made available for rental beginning the Thursday prior to the first class day of each semester. All full- and half-size locker rentals include complimentary towel service. The last date to renew lockers will be clearly posted in each of the locker rooms. Rec lockers that have not been renewed by the requested date will be cleared and rented to a new user. A fee will be assessed to retrieve items cleared from lockers. Free day lockers are also located throughout the facility. Don’t be a victim of theft; lock up your personal belongings.

As a result, Sport Clubs present a unique opportunity for students to develop both athletic and leadership abilities. Since 1974, the Sport Clubs program has captured over 150 overall team and singleevent national championships and hundreds of conference championships.

SPORT CLUBS

The Texas A&M Sport Clubs Association provides the opportunity to compete against clubs from other collegiate institutions at the state, regional, or national level in 34 different sports, and allows members to learn or enhance their skills in a recreational setting. Each club is administered by students, has practice times and facilities, and receives some monetary support. To help subsidize the cost of travel and equipment, clubs may charge dues and participate in fund-raising activities.
