BU Boutique: A different kind of fashion By Monica Salazar Special to The Citizen

When it came to clothes shopping in Plainville, Elba Roman saw that her options were limited to standard department stores.

“I figured a hometown boutique would be nice in this area to give people a different variety of clothes to wear and a different area to shop,” she said. When she set out to open her own store, Roman didn’t want to have a stereotypical boutique with expensive price tags and exclusively formal attire. She wanted to offer affordable and inclusive clothing options for women of all sizes.

For Roman, whose career spans the entertainment, retail, and modeling industries, fashion served as a cornerstone for self-expression and creativity. Recently relocating from Greenwich, an area with a greater variety “When I was building the of clothing stores, Roman saw an opportunity.

Under the agreement, HCMG will take ownership of all print and digital operations of RJ Media Group, including the Record-Journal, its seven weekly publications, and its digital advertising agency, according to Record-Journal Publisher Liz White Notarangelo. Words of Wellness by Dr. Stacey Raya

SITTING ON THE JOB Maintaining spinal health is vital, especially for those who spend extended periods sitting at their jobs. Prolonged sitting can lead to poor posture, muscle imbalances, and increased pressure on the spine, contributing to discomfort and potential long-term issues. Seeing a chiropractor can be immensely beneficial in addressing these concerns. Chiropractors are experts in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal problems, particularly those resulting from sedentary work. Spinal adjustments and manual therapies can realign the spine, release tension, and promote optimal joint function. Chiropractors also offer valuable advice on ergonomics and posture, helping individuals create a workstation that reduces strain on the spine. Additionally, they may recommend targeted exercises and stretches to strengthen core muscles and improve flexibility, supporting overall spinal health. The word “chiropractic” comes from the Greek words “cheir” (hands) and “praxis” (practice). As the name suggests, it is a hands-on therapy. Chiropractic manipulation is the application of pressure to a person’s spine or other parts of their body by a qualified chiropractic doctor, or chiropractor. This pressure allows a chiropractor to adjust and correct alignment. Chiropractic manipulation aims to reduce pain and improve mechanical function, or the way a person moves. To schedule an appointment, please call 860-621-2225 or visit us at 200 Queen St., Southington. P.S. By incorporating chiropractic care into their routine, individuals can proactively foster a healthier spine for improved productivity.

Two original PCS members still going strong Lola and Ed Wishart are two of the original members of the 53 year old Plainville Choral Society (PCS). Lola states “it started back when we were in a choir rehearsing and Len Wishart (Ed’s brother) needed some people for a variety show he was involved in” and from there, they became a group as a spin-off from the church group. She describes herself as being shy and then she married into a big family who loved to sing. “People often don’t believe me when I tell them I was shy” and anyone who has ever seen Lola perform would agree that she is a natural on stage. She attributes her ability to entertain the audience members who come every year to the PCS concerts and shows as coming from the group’s music director, Pete Peluso. “He saw something in me from the beginning” says Lola which gave her confidence and “this makes up a good portion of who I am today.” She describes having a conversation with Pete one time when she asked him why she always got songs which were comical. He thought for a moment and then told her “Lola, many

people can get up in front of an audience and sing. But to be able to sing and make people laugh, that is a gift.” Lola and Ed have been in all but two productions in 53 years. “This group means the world to us” state both Lola and Ed. Multiple members of their family have been involved with PCS. For many years there were 7 or 8 Wisharts at one

Lola and Ed recall when the group used to do three shows per year and some of those involved members of the Youth Theatre. “What we have been able to do over the years is amazing and that is because what our directors have seen in us”. The group is currently rehearsing for their upcoming Christmas concert and Lola and Ed have many family members and friends who come every year. Lola states “To everyone we are Aunt Lola and Uncle Eddie and I think that is the cutest damn thing. ”

“You can tell right away that there is a genuine feeling of family.” This is true not just for the Wisharts. Several different family combinations can be found in this year’s group, including Music Director Pete Peluso and his wife Maryjane Peluso, who was their accompanist for many years. Sandy Butler, a longtime member, has been joined this year by her daughter Katie, who had previously been involved in the PCS Youth Theatre.

The PCS concert “We Need A Little Christmas” will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 355 Camp Street, Bristol on Dec. 8 and 9, at 7 p.m.

There are other mothers and daughters, a husband and wife, and a brother and sister who recently joined the group.

Tickets are $12 from any choral member or $15 at the door. There will also be a bake sale on both nights during intermission. For further information, contact Debi Wishart Parker at (860) 573-8526. The group rehearses at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. No auditions are required. They will begin rehearsing for their Spring Concert on Monday, Jan. 8.

White expects HCMG will retain a majority of RecordJournal employees including most of its journalists, he wrote, while maintaining the current office at 500 S. Broad St. in Meriden until at least March 31, with “a continued local presence thereafter.” For most of its history, the Record-Journal operated out of 11 Crown St. in downtown Meriden, before relocating to South Broad Street in

2015 after outsourcing printing six years earlier. The renovated offices provided a smaller footprint and modern workspace to support digital publishing and innovation. Earlier this year, the RecordJournal reduced delivery of its print edition to five days a week as part of a switch from morning carrier delivery to postal delivery. In his column, White cited

the Record-Journal’s long history dating back to 1867 and “core belief that journalism is the lifeblood of a healthy democracy and a watchdog for public interest. “We have been proud to provide a source of local news and advertising for the greater Meriden/Wallingford community for many years.” Hearst is the right buyer, White wrote, to continue that mission.
