Longo, longtime salon owner and town official, dies By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — The new look for the town’s library was slated to be revealed last Wednesday.

A design subcommittee that includes local developer Mark Lovley and local engineer Sev Bovino has been considering colors, design features and materials that could improve the library.

A state grant this fall provided $5 million more to the $17 million library project, which allowed an increase to the square footage as well as design improvements and other upgrades. Additional money also allowed an upgrade to the exterior aesthetics of the proposed library, criticized by some town officials and residents. Jim Morelli, a Town Council Republican and Library Building Committee chairman, said some of the committee members have been determining what improvements could be made. “It looks totally different now. “It looks like a big crown moulding. It really dresses the look of the building up,” he said. “There’s so many options of materials and colors and even textures. The way you combine all that can really change the appearance of a building.”

Design subcommittee members are waiting to get samples of new finishes that they’ll consider in a few weeks. Lovley said the new building better fits with the surrounding area.

Members of both parties would frequent the salon, according to Derynoski.

She was appointed to the Board of Fire Commissioners and was an assistant registrar of voters. Town Council Chairman Paul Chaplinsky explained that town flags were to be lowered to half staff last weekend in honor of Longo. He also served on the planning commission although his time didn’t overlap with Longo’s. “Many people that I’ve interacted with over the years have had so many positive things to say about her time that she served and her leadership,” Chaplinsky said. We worked hard together to deliver a budget that adheres to fiscal guardrails that reign in spending, pay down debt, and save for a rainy day. At the same time, we developed a budget that included the largest tax reduction in state history and broadened tax relief benefits for seniors, making Connecticut more affordable for everyone.

Despite the division and partisan politics that we hear about on the national news, I have found the State Legislature to be a civil and productive institution. Connecticut’s lawmakers get along and while at times we may disagree on an issue, we respect each other’s positions. From the beginning, I was encouraged to vote for what was best for my district, regardless of the party line. My advocacy and votes in strong support for public safety evidence this autonomy and I am proud that the Southington delegation of Republicans and a Democrat consistently voted as a block on a

as important as my work at the Capitol. Throughout my term, a number of Southington’s small business owners contacted me asking for assistance in navigating state agencies, securing permits and licenses, and supporting their applications for state and federal grants. In the process, I’ve visited, learned from, and actively promoted restaurant owners, skin care therapists, indoor golf centers, butchers, and numer-

dress the financial challenges of the project and fit within the construction timeline. Over many months, we worked with the town’s bonding attorney, the project architects, and the House Bond Committee chair to develop and submit our request. In Hartford, I put myself in direct contact with legislative leadership and representatives from the governor’s team to advocate for this funding. I am grateful that state leadership has recognized the value of this community project and hopeful that the grant we received will bring local leaders together in a productive manner so we can build the library that Southington deserves. Serving as your state representative is a privilege and an honor that involves a lot of time, hard work, and striking a healthy balance between my family, my teaching job, and representing our community.
