Clothing drive for local veterans a success On Monday, Dec. 11, State Rep. Dave Yaccarino concluded a winter clothing drive for local veterans and families. Yaccarino partnered with Columbus House to organize donation sites at various businesses throughout North Haven. The effort focused on providing homeless and insecure veterans in the North Haven area with new winter essentials, like hats, gloves, and warm underwear. “Each year, we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our neighbors to support the most vulnerable in our community. Through your gracious donations, Columbus House will be able to serve local veterans and their families who can suffer from limited access to vital resources during colder months. They have sacri-

ficed so much for us and this is a small token of our appreciation for them,” Yaccarino said. Multiple locally owned businesses and civic organizations volunteered as donation sites to facilitate the successful clothing drive.

“The success of this drive is also a testament to the strength of North Haven’s local business network and emphasizes their commitment to growing our community through charity and partnerships,” Yaccarino said. Organizers offered “thank

and an asset to the people and families that they serve.” For more information on Columbus House, and how to donate, please visit their website: https:// www.columbushouse.org/

The do’s and don’ts of pet adoption for the holidays Adopting a pet for a loved one may seem like a great gift idea, but before doing so, it’s important to consider why the holiday season may not be the right time.

Chrystal Rashba, the assistant animal control officer for the Town of North Haven, shared the most important things to think about when it comes to pet adoption around the holidays. Her first significant piece of advice is that you shouldn’t

actually adopt the pet as a gift. “You might have an idea of what said person wants, but really they’re the one who should pick out,” she explained. Instead, Crystal suggested writing a handwritten note offering to pay

the adoption fee when the individual finds the right pet for them. By doing this, you eliminate the possibility of adopting a pet that isn’t a good fit for the person you’re giving the pet to.

Finance 101: A guide to state and federal unclaimed cash and property By Jeff Jolly

Every year across the United States, billions of dollars go unclaimed. These assets are held by state and federal Treasuries until their rightful owners are found. Anyone who has lived or worked in the United States can check these financial repositories to see if any dollars are owed to them or a family member. Here’s an overview: Unclaimed assets arise from a wide range of sources. Unclaimed cash can come from a variety of incomplete financial transactions, including abandoned bank accounts, uncashed checks from previous employers, investment dividends, utility overpayments, insurance company payouts, and uncollected security deposits. Estate settlements and safety deposit boxes also can yield unclaimed property. Sometimes owners can’t be tracked down. A change in residence, marital status, or employment can result in

undelivered mail, which in turn can lead to unredeemed payments.

of unclaimed money at www.usa.gov/unclaimedmoney.

Businesses are required by law to make reasonable efforts to reunite owners with their assets.

Periodic searches, especially following a life event change such as a move, change of employment, or name change, can reveal unclaimed assets.

Uncollected cash and property must be turned over to the government following the legal “dormancy” period. Unclaimed assets often sit unclaimed in government coffers because the owners are not aware of their existence. Online databases make it easy to search for unclaimed assets. Anyone can find out if they have unclaimed cash or property owed to them or a family member. They can do so by searching the free online databases operated by the states in which they have lived, worked, invested, or conducted business. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) maintains a list of unclaimed property websites for all 50 states at www.unclaimed.org. The federal government also provides a list of databases

The claims process starts online. Claimants will be asked to substantiate their right to the property. This process often requires uploading or mailing documentation that proves ownership.

If the claimant is the rightful owner, the claim will be paid by check or direct deposit.

PD partnering with Umbrella Center to help domestic violence victims By Michael Savino Special to The Citizen

The police department is partnering with the Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence to provide services to domestic violence victims. The partnership will also provide an advocate at the police station to coordinate services for victims. Police Chief Kevin Gleen said the services are an expansion of the department’s existing relationship with BHcare, which runs the Umbrella center.

“We always had a great relationship with the Umbrella Center and BHcare,” Glenn said. The new partnership, which the police department announced on Nov. 14, includes help with planning for victims’ safety and assistance with lethality assessments to determine when a victim’s life is in immediate danger. The program also includes counseling, long-term case management and help accessing other resources. Glenn said, most important-

ly, the Umbrella Center will provide services on nights and weekends, when courthouses that normally provide support are closed. “It’s a great program, as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

Umbrella Center Program Manager Cindy Carlson said the partnership allows victims to seek help within the safe confines of the police department.

According to Rashba, municipal shelters aren’t always able to obtain an animal’s history. That being said, many animals are taken from abusive, unsafe environments and brought to the shelter. It’s imperative to keep in mind that an animal adopted from a shelter has just endured a stressful situation.

This shepard, from Hamden, is up for adoption.

Always be mindful that whenever you adopt, the animal needs time and space to decompress and adapt to their new environment.

right away. If you do have people over, it may be best to keep the animal in a separate room.

“They can’t get their own food, fill their water, they rely on you for everything.” Rashba said. “Be mindful and adjust your schedule.”

Lastly, it’s important to be aware of what foods are toxic for animals. Rashba shared that around the holidays, some common poisonous foods that are fed to dogs are chocolate, currants, candy canes, gummy candy, and onions. Rashba recommended that people just steer clear of feeding pets human food. Not only can it create bad habits, it can also cause them severe stomach issues.

Hosting events with a new pet in the house could be very overstimulating for the animal. Just imagine it – a whole new environment to adjust to with an overwhelming amount of different sounds, smells, people. It’s best to not introduce them to too many people

Rashba has been getting around 15 calls regarding surrendering an animal every day. “Pets are not something that I say to give away as a gift,” she concluded. “But every animal should be in a home for the holidays. You just need to be realistic about having an animal.”

Depending on your schedule around the holidays, it may just not be the right time to adopt. If you’re frequently out of the house at various holiday events, the animal may struggle to adapt and feel comfortable.

NORTH HAVEN NIGHTHAWKS D10 COMPETITION CHEERLEADING TEAM

Cheerleaders win national competition The North Haven Nighthawks D10 Competition Cheerleading team placed first in the Nation at the Silver Spurs Arena in Florida on Dec. 10. This team also placed first in their local, state and regional competitions. Coach Jenn Hettrick said: “These athletes are committed to winning. They’ve always had one goal and that’s getting to Florida for Nationals. When they hit the mat they turn it on, perform, and get the job done. Their confidence and charisma when they perform has been unmatched this entire season. These girls have been faced with tragedy and have banded together as not only teammates but as sisters would do. They are sassy, strong minded, and have taught the coaches how to persevere and not sweat the small stuff (so much).” One of the cheerleaders on this team, Victoria DeSimone, is the daughter of fallen North Haven firefighter Anthony DeSimone, who passed away on Aug. 24.
