GOP remains in control of leadership By Michael Savino Special to The Citizen

First Selectman Michael Freda will serve an eighth term in office after a successful election night for Republicans. Republican Town Committee Chairman Vincenzo Gallo promised “consistent customer service” after his party maintained control of the town’s boards and commissions.

“It’s an unpaid service, but we have a lot of great candidates with a lot of background that fits in several single section we put them in,” he said. Freda’s win was a formality, as he ran unopposed. Second Selectman William Pieper helped Republicans maintain control.

Republican J. Stacey Yarbrough also ran unopposed for town clerk and tax collector. Democratic Vice Chairman Frederick Rodriguez said his party needs to continue to get more engagement from Democrats in town.

Budget referendum date may be changed

HELPING LOCAL VETERANS

By Michael Savino Special to The Citizen

Selectmen could push back the budget referendum date before it’s officially set in order to give voters more time to learn about the eventual proposal. Originally, the Board of Selectmen was looking at a May 14 referendum, but that would only be one day after the annual town budget meeting on the budget. That date could change to May 21, following a suggestion Third Selectwoman Sally Buemi made during the Board of Selectmen’s Nov. 2 meeting.

The 2023 Veterans Day Project brought up dozens of volunteers on Saturday, Nov. 11, each ready to help veterans around North Haven. The Project aims to clean up the yards – raking leaves and more – of local men and women who served in the Armed Forces. The volunteers met at 8:30 a.m. at North Haven High School and then spread out around the community, raking/blowing leaves and helping vets for free. Photo courtesy of Veterans Day Project, Facebook

“Nine hours, I don’t think, gives our voters enough time to learn about the budget,” Buemi said, referencing the fact that the annual town meeting can often last until 9 p.m. Polls for a budget referendum open at 6 a.m. The town charter sets the annual town budget meeting for the second Monday in May, which will be See Referendum, A2

Finance 101: Planning for surprise medical bills By Jeff Jolly

Major medical expenses can create a heavy financial burden. And the fact is, all of us are susceptible to unforeseen and costly medical events. While we can’t control whether and when we might encounter an unexpected health challenge, we can prepare for it financially. Here are several strategies to help you get started. The realities of today’s medical coverage To start, it’s important to make sure you have the right health insurance in place to help you manage the financial consequences of a health crisis.

to face co-pays or deductibles when you need care. Therefore, your financial commitment doesn’t end with the premiums for which you may be responsible. Depending on the policy you carry, you could easily face out-of-pocket expenses costing several thousand dollars. One way to manage these costs is to pay close attention to whether providers you work with are “in- network,” or “out-of-network.” Typically, your personal financial liability is limited with in-network providers, but your insurance coverage may be lacking if you use out-of-network services. In emergency situations, you may not have much control over who provides your care. These circumstances can result in particularly large bills that may surprise those who thought their health insurance would cover them.

Most people have coverage either through their employer, through an individual policy or as part of a government program such as Medicaid or Medicare. Regardless Take time to understand of how you are insured, it is what is and isn’t covered unincreasingly common today der your current health in-

surance policy so you’re better informed on what the potential financial impacts could be. Insurance isn’t enough – plan for that

cation costs. Having a dedicated cash cushion in place can help you help you handle surprise medical bills without depleting savings devoted to other goals.

Short-term disability insurance options can also be an important financial protection. If you need to take time off work due to an illness or injury, short-term disability policies typically provide a specified portion of your paycheck that can be used Conventional wisdom recommends that you set aside for expenses. medical event, the least of your worries should be paying for it. Planning ahead is your best defense against the impact of surprise expenses. NHEF hosts Trivia Night, raising about $4,000 Over 120 people put their phones away for a few hours and put their trivia knowledge to the test at the North Haven Education Foundation‘s (NHEF) Trivia Night fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 3. One of the liveliest rounds was “Name that Tune” which was officiated by Russell Dallai, Principal of North Haven High School. As a few seconds of a particular song was played, participants had to name the artist who sang the cover as well as the original song. Bernard Pellegrino, Chair of the NHEF was the other Master of Ceremonies. Donations are still coming in, but NHEF estimates that Trivia Night raised about $4,000 in donations for the North Haven Education Foundation. The trivia rounds were very
