Human Services offers expanded resources By Peter Prohaska Herald Staff

On Nov. 2, the Human Services Department hosted an open “home” event, offering community members the opportunity to tour its new-

ly-opened headquarters at 19 Wallingford Rd., just across from Cheshire Town Hall. In addition to showcasing the Town’s investment in Human Services, which of-

fers help to all of Cheshire’s demographics, it was also a chance for staffers to describe some of the services they provide to the Cheshire community. The work of See Services, A4

Bradford Tilden offering a new way to heal By Joy VanderLek Special to The Citizen

“It may not be your cup of tea,” said Bradford Tilden, as he addressed the room’s participants; all of whom were seated or supine on mats scattered about the darkened room.

Holistic teacher and healer Bradford Tilden sits before his crystal bowls as he begins a crystal sound bowl healing session. Photo courtesy of Joy VanderLek, Special to The Citizen

A Cheshire resident, Tilden is a holistic wellness facilitator, a healing arts teacher, practicing Universal White Time Crystal and Gemstone Healing using crystal singing bowls. High, sweet sounds resonated through the room as Tilden struck one of the singing bowls set before and around him. Shortly thereafter, his own voice joined to blend with the sounds rising from the bowls.

A classically trained pianist, Tilden has a background in classical piano performance and music composition. He graduated from Amherst College with a BA in music composition, magna cum laude, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a Master of Music in music composition. Tilden has produced two contemporary classical CDs and two sound healing CDs to date, one of which was produced in Lisbon, Portugal, and to which more than a thousand people attended the CD release party. Currently, Tilden has a position at the Bridge Healing Arts Center in Farmington See Tilden, A13

Obituaries Philip E. Banning

Marianna P. Stango

CHESHIRE Philip Edward Banning, age 67, of Cheshire, entered into rest on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Phil was born on June 22, 1956 in Hamden and was a Cheshire resident for most of his life. Phil was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Barbara (Klanica) Banning for over 45 years. Together they raised three beautiful daughters, the pride and joy of Phil’s life. Phil was a kind and humble soul and always generous with his time. He loved life to the fullest and was proudest to be “Papa” to his 5 grandchildren. He always made them laugh, took every opportunity to teach them, protect, them, and give them rides on his giant tractors. Known to many as “Farmer Phil,” he was co-owner of Geremia Greenhouse in Wallingford, CT. When he wasn’t at home with his wife and family he was at the greenhouse. He walked in each day with a smile on his face and a joke ready to tell. He could brighten even the darkest days. Phil enjoyed everything he did, and work was no exception. He loved everyone he worked with, and was especially grateful for his partner, Joey. Phil always said “he couldn’t ask for a better partner”. In addition to his wife, Barbara, Phil is survived by his loving daughters, Kate Corcoran and her husband, Adam of Cheshire; Sarah Black and Andy Mulholland of Gloucester, MA; and Mary Banning Taylor and her husband, Mike of Cheshire. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren, Andrew Philip, Meghan and

Obituaries Frederick Anthony Coughlan CHESHIRE - Frederick Anthony Coughlan passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, November 20, 2023, two days before his 94th birthday. He was the devoted husband of the late Margaret (Duggan) Coughlan for 48 years until her passing in 2003. Fred was born in Waterbury, CT, on November 22, 1929, the only child of Frederick and Irene (Sullivan) Coughlan. He graduated from Crosby High School, Class of 1947, and went on to graduate from Teachers College of Connecticut (now CCSU), Class of 1951. After college he and Peg married and moved to Maryland, where he served in the Army during the Korean War. Upon discharge he returned to Connecticut, where he taught math and coached basketball at Cheshire High School, continuing his education and earning his Master’s degree and 6th and 7th year teaching certificates. Fred was active in the community, establishing the Saturday Morning Basketball program and coaching little league baseball where he also served as president. After retiring, Fred and two buddies formed the Three Brushes and painted house interiors for older adults in the community. He volunteered at the Cheshire Community Food Pantry for many years and earned Volunteer of the Year. This past May, Fred was honored to be

named Co-Grand Marshal in the Cheshire Memorial Day Parade. He was a faithful communicant of St. Bridget’s Church and attended daily mass for many years, always followed by coffee and conversation at the coffee shop around the corner. He was also active in the Cheshire and Prospect Senior Centers and a long-time member of the Southington Elks Club. He had the good fortune of being set up to sit next to Pat Helm on a Prospect Senior Citizen bus trip and they spent the last 15 years keeping busier than people half their age, traveling, attending concerts and shows and dancing the night away whenever possible. Fred leaves behind his children Mary Basile and his son-in-law Barry of North Granby, and Tony Coughlan of Southport. He delighted in following the lives of his grandchildren Lauren Basile and her fiancé Drew Nash of Golden, CO, Sarah (Basile) and Christopher Phelan of

West Hartford, Eric Basile of Boston, MA and Tyler Coughlan of Southport. He also leaves his greatgranddaughter Madeline Phelan who brought him immense joy. Fred loved the company of his family and friends, UCONN Women’s basketball, and a hot dog well grilled. He read every word of the Waterbury Republican American every day. He frequently reminded us that his life was so blessed. For the past five years he was lovingly cared for by Luz Castano whom he called his angel. She enabled him to live his best life every day and for that we are eternally grateful. Thank you to our 2023 Meriden Daffodil Festival Sponsors. Without their generosity, we could not continue to deliver the weekend our community eagerly awaits. Friends and family come from miles around to enjoy the festivities you assist us in delivering. We are also thankful for our non-profit food vendors. This collaboration has grown into a wonderful working relationship over our 43 years. We look forward to our future together. Please, consider becoming a sponsor for the 2024 Meriden Daffodil Festival, May 4 and 5, 2024. Contact Lisa Suzio to discuss the various sponsorship opportunities at lisasuzio@sbcglobal.net. ***Early incentives are available***
