The do’s and don’ts of pet adoption for the holidays By Heather Sillins Special to The Citizen

Adopting a pet for a loved one may seem like a great gift idea, but before doing so, it’s important to consider why the holiday season may not be the right time.

Chrystal Rashba, the Assistant Animal Control Officer for the Town of North Haven, shared the most important things to think about when it comes to pet adoption around the holidays. Her first significant piece of

Berlin VFD presents $10K to Veterans Commission (From left) Paul Eshoo, Bruce Trevethan, Peter Galgano, Charles Colaresi, Frank Papa, Thomas Bryers, Mathew Sturgeon, and Dean Revoir celebrated the donation.

On Tuesday night, Dec. 5, the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department made a presentation to the Berlin Veterans Commission. This makes the ninth year they have donated these gift cards for Berlin veterans and veteran widows in need. Berlin Fire Department members Frank Papa, Mathew Sturgeon, and Thomas Bryers, and photographer John Dumin presented the commission with $10,000 in $100 gift cards for Berlin veterans and veteran widows in need. They raised this money by setting up at the Berlin Fair, having a car show, and having a jeep show.

Places of worship highlight community during dark holiday season By Cris Villalonga-Vivoni Record-Journal staff

ration with St. Peter's Episcopal Churches.

Despite this time of year being known for its cheer and joy, many individuals don’t feel the same holiday spirit for many reasons, such as missing loved ones or experiencing sudden changes in their mood due to the weather.

Rev. Alison McCaffrey of First Congregational said that "Quiet Christmas" aims to hold space for grief and remind people they aren't alone.

In order to support those who aren’t feeling cheerful, places of worship throughout the state are hosting various Blue Christmas services to hold space for community members struggling with their mental health. For example, the First Congregational Church of Cheshire is hosting its annual "Quiet Christmas: For those who grieve and live with loss" on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 7:00 p.m. This year's service is hosted in collabo-

"For some people, [holidays are] not a time of festivities and joy. It's a sad time and we want to acknowledge that," she said. "It does have elements of a Christmas Eve service, but on a quieter scale, more contemplative and reflective in a place where people can feel whatever it is that they're feeling... knowing that they're not alone, that everybody who is there has suffered some kind of a loss." What is Blue Christmas? Interim Minister of the First Congregational of Wallingford, Reverend Meredith Jef-

fers, said that at the heart of Blue Christmas services, such as Cheshire's "Quiet Christmas," is holding space for weariness. She explained that the traditional Blue Christmas is a Christian church service held, typically on or around Dec. 21, also known as Winter Solstice or "the longest night." She said it was created to support and comfort people struggling during Christmas. She added that the use of blue is significant because of its common association with feelings of calmness and the Virgin Mary, who is viewed as a gentle figure in many Christian churches. "It started so that people who weren't feeling all happy, jolly, and joyful had a place where they could go and experience the gentle-

ness of Christmas, as opposed to the frivolity and the joy of Christmas," Jeffers said. "It was a safe place where people could go and simply be... yet allow the Christmas spirit to fill them perhaps in a different way than it had in years past." The First Congregational Church of Wallingford hosted its first Blue Christmas in many years on Thursday, Dec. 14, Jeffers said. She explained that the congregation has held similar services for members. However, this year's service had an open invitation to the whole Wallingford community. She said that the purpose of the service was to welcome anyone "anyone needing a quiet, reflective place in the midst of the holiday season."

holiday weariness, such as the on-going overseas wars and repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. "I think a lot of people put on a really good front and try to make sure that they have a Holly Jolly Christmas. But, I would say a large number of people, somewhere within them, is this idea of weariness that touches them," Jeffers said. What is seasonal affective disorder? Director of the Winter Depression Research Clinic at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Paul Desan, said one potential contributor to the holiday weariness is seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD.

In addition, a sleep hormone called melatonin is naturally made by the body when it's dark out, contributing to feelings of fatigue and SAD. Based on the data estimates, Desan said that 3 to 5% of residents in Central Connecticut may experience SAD. In addition, Desand added that SAD is two to four times more common in women than men. Desan noted many people experience a form of SAD called "subsyndromal SAD" without knowing it. He said that clients experiencing subsyndromal SAD often don't fit within the clinical diagnostic criteria for SAD, so it may not be taken seriously. "[Clients] come into our clinic and they say 'I don't have much energy, I'm withdrawing from activities, I'm not enjoying life. Usually I'm an outgoing, happy person. I just don't feel right…’ People have seasonal problems that are significant," Desan said. What to do? When it comes to SAD and subsyndromal SAD, Desan said there are a few treatment paths that can be useful, specifically highlighting

Desan added that it's important to care for the whole person during the holiday season so professional counselors and therapists can be essential resources to discuss other underlying concerns, such as managing grief and developing coping mechanisms for the seasonal depression. Therapy is also helpful in treating SAD. "People enjoy the holidays, they have fun...but that also stirs things up. McCaffrey said First Congregational Church of Cheshire has been hosting its "Quiet Christmas" for the last 15 years. It was a "natural extension" from the church's bereavement group, intending to reach a wider audience who may be feeling a breadth of sad emotions during the holiday. To honor attendee's loved ones, McCaffrey explained that attendees are asked to bring photos of their loved ones who have passed. The photos are then all placed at the church's chancel at the start of the service. In addition, attendees are given knitted prayer shawls made by a group of churchgoers every year. McCaffrey said their yearly efforts ensure that people don't feel alone while feeling "out of sync with a world and community that seems to be celebrating."

In the Adult Division, a group of students from Berlin High School got together and created a winter wonderland around a skating rink. Their creativity was enough to take home top honors, garnering the most votes from judges.

As usual, the library didn’t turn anyone who didn’t have the funds to make a scene for a gingerbread house away. A limited number of gingerbread house kits were made available to those who wanted to participate.

The construction guidelines had to be strictly followed. •Gingerbread houses needed to be constructed primarily of edible materials and icing. •Bases for the projects could not exceed 24 inches by 24 inches. •Store-bought gingerbread kits were permissable. •No electricity could be used

KENSINGTON - The tallest angel joined our family in heaven on December 9, 2023. Robert E. Norton, everyone called him “Bob”, was born on Oct. 20, 1941 to Adolph and Josephine Norton of New Britain, CT. He leaves the love of his life Cecelia “ChiChi” Norton or “Hon” as he lovingly called her and recently celebrated 60 years of a simple and joyous life together. Sharing warm thoughts every morning with their two fur babies. He leaves his two daughters and sons-inlaw, Lisa and Stanley Mierjewski, Erika and Raymond Zisa, all of Kensington, CT. Who miss him so dearly. He leaves three grandchildren, who he loved to talk about all their accomplishments, it made him beam. Kaitlyn and Vivaldi Demas of Middletown, CT, James and Linda Wall, and Zakary Zisa, of Kensington, CT. He also loved his precious great-grandchild, Kamden James Demas, and his future brother or sister. He also leaves, brotherin-law, Gary Riedel, Sr.; and two nephews, Gary Riedel, Jr., and Kevin Riedel and families Arlene and Sam Riedel, Kiera, Meghan Riedel and Marni Schiffres, of Kensington, CT. Bob was a gentle giant, with a huge heart. He would say no more animals then hold a baby in his arms and another pet joined the house. He worked so very hard to provide for us. Mix liquor first, then separate yolks and whites of eggs, add sugar to beaten yolks, mix well. Add milk and cream, slowly beating. Beat whites of eggs until stiff and fold slowly into mixture. Let sit in cool place for several days. Taste frequently.

Ghostie (above left) is a handsome grey Russian blue lookalike. He is completely vetted and would love to find a home with you. He is sweet and loving and will snuggle up and watch "Its a wonderful life" with you this holiday season. Online adoption form at www.fobac.org and you can email us too at fobacadoptions @gmail.com. A home for Christmas would make his dreams come true. Leroy (below left) is a silly energetic Bassett mix about 3 yrs old. He is vaccinated and heartworm/lyme negative. He weighs 39 lbs. He may have endured some abuse as he is shy with strangers for a few minutes when he first meets you. We feel it is best for him to go to a home with older children. He loves his toys but destroys stuffed animals in minutes. Online adoption form at www.fobac.org and you can email us at fobacadoptions @gmail.com.

Tip: Today’s recipe makers may want to set the eggnog in the refrigerator as the “cool place” of choice.
