Little Joe’s Books, celebrating its one-year anniversary, is a warm, welcoming place for kids to learn to love books. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to grab a latte or tea downstairs, wander up with their kids and stay awhile. There’s a comprehensive selection of books for infants through teenagers — old favorites as well as the best of new literature. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and enjoys nothing more than talking to kids (and adults) about books. Hair Wharf has been in Katonah for 36 years, and its family-oriented success is built on one thing: personalized service that three generations of customers have come to know and love. Carol and John Gattucci and daughter Jessica Morrison spend time to talk with clients about what they want and keep them looking their absolute best between appointments. Hair Wharf’s the spot to go for men’s, women’s and kids’ cuts and blowouts, foils, nonbleach blazing, which maintains hair integrity without sacriďŹ cing beauty, extensions, glazes, facial and arm waxing, and much, much more. Carol jokes that Hair Wharf’s the “Steel Magnolias of Katonah,â€? and that speaks to the care each and every customer receives, including fashionable wigs or extensions for medical patients. Great hair-product lines to use at home, too, including Ladibugs lice prevention shampoo, conditioner and mint spray! Hours: Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from noon to 8 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call for special occasion appointments.

Tutoring Club in Katonah is part of a respected national franchise offering personalized programs to help students from kindergarten through high school “catch up and keep up, learn and retain critical skills, and prepare for academic success. Owned by Patricia A. Wagner, Ed.D., with a master’s degree in psychology and a doctorate in education — both from Teachers College, Columbia University — Tutoring Club is in its seventh year here. Tutors specializing in all levels of mathematics, reading, science and international languages join Dr. Wagner, who was on staff at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York Medical College and Teachers College, Columbia University. An initial skills assessment shows each student’s academic strengths and weaknesses. A mastery-based learning plan is developed, individualized to focus on each child’s skill gaps and the development of new skills. A low student-teacher ratio ensures personalized attention. It takes approximately 16 hours to progress one grade level in mathematics, Dr. Wagner says, 32 hours in reading. Tutoring Club specializes in standardized test preparation — SSAT and ISEE through to PSAT, SAT and ACT, plus Regents. The next SAT course begins in early January. Hours: Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as needed. Sports schedules can be accommodated.

A Class Above. Guaranteed.

Lourdes Serrano, Jessica Riina, Samantha Lyons and friends

Tails have been wagging since Must Love Dogs opened in downtown Katonah in July 2011. Four-legged friends of all sizes and breeds can expect spa-like attention from master groomer and owner Jessica Riina. Two- to 3-hour sessions involve bathing, drying and extensive grooming of hair, skin and nails. Biodegradable shampoos and natural perfumes, homemade by Jessica from essential oils, are sensitive to canine well-being. Every dog should be groomed for looks and good health. “Groomers really know their dogs’ bodies and can recognize fleas, ticks, growths and other signs of disease. When dogs are well-groomed, they not only look better, they feel better,” Jessica says. The retail shop features fine specialty harnesses, leashes, jackets, toys, bones, Puppia brand products and natural skin care products including chemical-free flea and tick repellents. Excellent customer service and Jessica’s animal intuition stand out: “I feel a special connection to my dogs and their owners,” she says. “I love dogs, so I love what I do” — and it shows! Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call for extended holiday hours.

taly Direct Menswear by Rick Fortuna’s mission is pure and simple: every customer must look his best in well-fitted, tailored clothing. Styles have changed — men’s clothing is slightly more fitted than in recent years, with an international style. Italy Direct offers business suits with softer shoulders, shorter jackets and flat-front trousers. Customers try on a wide range of garments to determine the correct fit, and Rick meticulously supervises all tailoring. “It’s important to look your best and save money,” says Rick, whose clothing is discounted and comes, not surprisingly, direct from Italy. In addition to suits and black-tie apparel, Italy Direct offers semi-fitted shirts, cashmere-blend sweaters, sportswear, and luxurious outerwear including cashmere and wool topcoats that fall right above the knee. Ties, pocket squares and special-order shoes finish the look. Looking for made-to-measure clothing and dress shirts? Italy Direct is the place to go, with a representative at the shop one day a month. Italy Direct was voted the Best Menswear Store 2012 by Westchester magazine, which also featured Rick as a Westchester “fashion icon” in September. Hours: Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and by appointment. Open Sundays, Nov. 25 to Dec. 23.

ancing takes a person to the heart of his or her soul, and there’s no better place to get right to that sweet spot than Torrie Marie’s School of Dance, soon to be known as the Pound Ridge School of Dance. In its convenient Scotts Corners, Pound Ridge, studio, Torrie Marie’s offers a wide range of dance classes for children and adults. New owner, Pound Ridger Colette Dow, welcomes everyone, no matter their age or dancing background, to sign up for classes for themselves and their children. Some classes are longstanding favorites taught by Torrie Marie’s expert teaching staff, including former Rockettes Stevi Van Meter and Melissa Stuart. Other classes are brand-new, such as the boys’ hip-hop class that’s rocketed off in popularity. Colette knows dancing is hard work, but it’s fun too, and Torrie Marie’s aims to make classes all that and much, much more! From the “Tiny Dancers” group of 3-yearolds to Russian ballerina Svetlana Ferdinandova’s older, more rigorously trained students, Torrie Marie’s is the place where students learn dance basics and advanced techniques while having a great time, even at the highest levels. Give Colette a call about classes you’d like Torrie Marie’s to offer. We’re entertaining some different ideas these days, including barre yoga and Zumba, and Ms. Svetlana’s very own “White Swan” adult class where basic ballet moves and stretches are used to tone and strengthen. People love to come in and learn to dance, no matter what kind of dance it is. Other plans are in the works, too. Torrie Marie’s is the perfect spot for birthday parties, parents’ nights out and school break or summer camp activities. Call for details. Hours: Call or go online for class schedule.

David Liebman is not kidding when he says, “If you can think of it, David Liebman the Handyman, Inc. can do it.” David the Handyman started out simply, changing an out-of-reach light bulb for a Pound Ridge homeowner. The firm has grown from handyman work to complete house renovation — and everything in between — in Pound Ridge, Bedford, Bedford Hills, Katonah, Mount Kisco, North Salem, South Salem and Somers. Call for carpentry, painting and masonry repair, all the way to basement and bath renovation. David personally supervises every job, from initial estimate to the final punch list sign-off. Now David has two additional services: Roof Zits removal and Humidex Basement Ventilation, which thwart mold and mildew outside and inside the home. “Don’t be embarrassed by roof zits; every house has them,” he says. “Our enzymatic spray digests the green, brown and black things that destroy your roof.” Humidex removes excess basement moisture and mold, without the hassle of emptying dehumidifiers. The firm is licensed and insured. References are available. Hours: Call for appointment and estimate, free of charge.

For 16 years in Norwalk, Conn., and 10 years in Bedford Hills, Fountainhead Wines has been bringing value-oriented wines — in all price ranges and styles — to its thirsty patrons. As savvy wine buyers know, it’s easy to overspend on wines that leave the imbiber looking for more. Owners Mike Pelletier and Mark Ancona have spent a combined 40 years deep in the wine trade — in London and New York — ferreting out small production, quality-driven wines that offer wine drinkers much more for their dollar. Fountainhead Wines directly sources from 15 European growers in France, Germany and Italy and handles perhaps the most cutting-edge portfolio of Oregonian pinot noir on the East Coast. Mike and Mark taste a dizzying array of wines throughout the year from the best importers to ensure the best selection in whatever category the patron desires: full-bodied reds in the $10 to $15 range, lighter whites in the $15 to $20 range, etc. Mike and Mark are also responsible for the wine selections at Fat Cat Pie Co. in Norwalk, their wine bar that was named one of the top 50 wine experiences in the country by Food and Wine magazine. We will prepare all students for their New York State esthetic written and practical board exams. Since opening, New York School of Esthetics has not raised its tuition and includes more certifications in the undergraduate program than any other school of its kind. These certifications include microdermabrasion, basic chemical peel, body treatments and teeth whitening. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions that include working with plastic surgeons, in dermatologists’ offices, day spas and laser centers. The school’s advanced courses include Laser Hair Removal Certification and Advanced Makeup Artistry, both approved by the New York State Department of Education. As one student said, “I learned so much compared to other schools of esthetics and made a family rather than just friends! I graduated knowing that I am a professional with great knowledge in skin care! New York School of Esthetics is fully accredited by National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS) and offers financial aid to those who qualify. While disordered eating may begin as a means to control some aspects of your life, those very thoughts and behaviors may end up controlling you. At Metro Behavioral Health Associates Eating Disorders Centers (MBHA), we understand that recovery is a complex process. Our specialists have devoted their professional training to the treatment of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and everything in between. Since no two cases have exactly the same causes or symptoms, the ideal recovery plan for each patient is unique. “Eating disorders don’t emerge overnight,â€? says MBHA Founder and Executive Director Jennie Kramer, M.S.W., L.C.S.W. “We take a ‘no stones unturned’ approach, so we can get to the root causes and effect gradual change. After all, you can’t take away behaviors if you don’t replace them with other strategies.â€? MBHA begins with a comprehensive psychosocial evaluation, followed by the development of an individually designed treatment plan. The center’s services include individual, family and group psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, nutritional counseling, hypnotherapy and creative arts therapy, to name a few. It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice. No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency. Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads, says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in, she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.
