Tails have been wagging since Must Love Dogs opened in downtown Katonah in July 2011. Four-legged friends of all sizes and breeds can expect spa-like attention from master groomer and owner Jessica Riina. Two- to 3-hour sessions involve bathing, drying and extensive grooming of hair, skin and nails. Biodegradable shampoos and natural perfumes, homemade by Jessica from essential oils, are sensitive to canine well-being. Every dog should be groomed for looks and good health. “Groomers really know their dogs’ bodies and can recognize fleas, ticks, growths and other signs of disease. When dogs are well-groomed, they not only look better, they feel better,” Jessica says. The retail shop features fine specialty harnesses, leashes, jackets, toys, bones, Puppia brand products and natural skin care products including chemical-free flea and tick repellents. Excellent customer service and Jessica’s animal intuition stand out: “I feel a special connecMust Love Dogs tion to my dogs and their owners,” she says. “I love dogs, so I love what I do” — and it shows! Lynn Klein, owner and Sue Komsta, fashion consultant

Avenue K’s first year has surprised and delighted owner Lynn Klein — and apparently many Katonah shoppers! “Even as we were completing final preparations to open last October, people would duck in to offer words of encouragement, many of them saying, ‘the people of Katonah like to support their shopkeepers.’ Boy, do they ever!” “I have met so many nice people, customers and new friends this year that the store is well ahead of plan,” Lynn says. Avenue K caters to the contemporary woman who likes unconstructed, free-flowing clothing with just that little bit of funk. Some of Lynn’s hottest lines are Baggallini, Bernie Mev, Flax, Fig & Bella, Grace Hats, HoBo, Krazy Larry, Margaret O’Leary, Minnie Rose, Surrealist, Sweet Romance, The Cat’s Pajamas, Tyler Böe, Thomas Mann, Wilt, and Wooden Ships hats, gloves and scarves. “I treat my clientele just like my friends,” Lynn says. “I want them to look good in what they buy and feel special when they wear it. If something just isn’t right, they need to hear it from me first. That’s what girlfriends do.” Stop by Avenue K and say hello. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday to 5 p.m., Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

The core of a wardrobe should consist of classic pieces expertly designed and manufactured, using fine fabrics and precision tailoring. Every item at Catherine H. is selected to ensure quality in design while focusing on a woman’s diverse needs. We love to mix and match, and our aim is to build a collection by making selections you can wear every day and in many ways — casual or dressy — with a simple change of accessories. Catherine M. Hiriart has more than 30 years of experience in fashion and design, including in boutiques in France, New York City and Connecticut as stylist, buyer, merchandiser, manager and freelance window-dresser. She established Catherine H. because women deserve access to personal styling and quality clothing, accessories and shoes. Guests frequently say their experience is that of a party! Warm, relaxed and positive, the milieu often involves stylists and guests working together for a common goal — that you feel encouraged and satisfied with your selections. The Katonah Art Center (KAC), now in its 17th year, has become the hub of artistic learning in northern Westchester. KAC offers a variety of classes and workshops for all ages and levels. Its warm, supportive environment provides a creative sanctuary for art lovers, artists, illustrators, cartoonists, sculptors, glass artists, photographers, painters and potters. KAC is known for the quality of its instructors, many of whom are locally and nationally known artists. The art center houses three painting studios, two pottery/sculpture studios, a children’s art room, a darkroom, and an Apple computer lab. KAC’s new art gallery, Gallery 131, provides a space for staff and local artists to exhibit and sell their work. The mission of the Katonah Art Center is for each person who enters our studios to find an energizing and welcoming space in which to discover his or her own creative voice.

With the success of The Blue Dolphin, owners Antonio and Alfredo Abbate opened Le Fontane Restaurant in 1991. Specializing in authentic Southern Italian cuisine and prepared by a team of mature and experienced kitchen professionals, the Abbates believe in “harvesting good taste.” They invite you to join them and experience their dishes, which include both seasonal offerings and reliable favorites. Among their mouthwatering appetizers are goat cheese stuffed figs, stuffed zucchini flower, grilled octopus, burrata and more. Entrée specialties include homemade black pasta with fresh seafood or the chef’s daily selection of grilled mixed seafood with fresh herbs. All beef and veal dishes are guaranteed hormone-free. Make sure you check out their Thursday night events including soft, light live jazz or live piano. A special catering menu is available for private — including office — parties. Choose from sit-down or buffet-style, all in an intimate setting. Reserve your holiday parties early. Hours: Tuesday through Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., Sunday to 9:30 p.m.

reeze was born from a love for clean, colorful, simple design with function. We offer a selection of unique, exquisite items, mixing well-known brands such as Juliska and Vietri with younger brands like Et Al candles and Scout. There’s a stunning selection of items for your needs — whether you’re looking for the perfect wedding, teacher or hostess gift. Founder Susan Maher grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, and spent most of her career working for Crate and Barrel in the Boston and New York markets. She opened Breeze — a store filled with gifts for the hostess or bride as well as tabletop and home designs — at 1 King Street, Chappaqua, in 2011. Susan expanded her brand in 2013 to include a larger space in downtown Katonah, jumping at the chance to become a part of this quintessential “Main Street.” “Breeze came about from the need for something refreshing, colorful and ever-changing, and a visit to the Katonah store immerses you in a breath of fresh air,” Susan says. “We’re excited to bring in jewelry, ponchos, pillows and throw blankets to expand our product assortment for the home.” Stop by if you’re in town, or browse Breeze’s new, equally beautiful online store. We pride ourselves on convenience, personal service and complimentary gift-wrap. We ship throughout the country and deliver to Katonah and Chappaqua for free. Hours: Open seven days a week. It’s fun to visit G. Willikers, no matter your age! You’ll enjoy shopping for toys that girls and boys will really use — from baby’s first teething ring to board games the whole family spends hours playing — and all kinds of gifts. Meghan Bazaar’s mom, Linda Ambrosino, began G. Willikers in Saratoga Springs and the Albany area 25 years ago, so making kids happy is definitely in the genes. “We’re an old-fashioned store in the best sense of the word,” says Meghan. “Our products focus on imaginary play and art, fostering education as well as imagination.” G. Willikers stocks well-made toys, puzzles and games from around the world — items kids won’t play with once and toss aside. “There’s a strong organic and ecofriendly bent here, too. That means a lot to us as well,” Meghan says. Customer service is top-drawer, with knowledgeable, helpful staff — mostly parents and teachers in their other lives — who know just what children love! Gift-wrapping’s free of charge, a huge plus in these hectic days. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday to 4:30 p.m.

Viktoria Fisch

Tantalize your senses and enrich your life at Ebba, a lifestyle boutique in the heart of Katonah. Owner Viktoria Fisch offers a well-curated mix of products for self and home — including the best examples of Dash & Albert rugs, CP Shades, Subtle Luxury cashmere, Laurie Berg jewelry, Leslie Janson designs, Papaya, Angel Dear baby, Roost, Abundance Candles and much, much more. As a child, Viktoria’s sanctuary was her tiny second-floor bathroom, where she mixed batches of lotions and potions and clogged up the drains with all sorts of “unusual and special ingredients.” When Viktoria’s mom, Ebba, would call upstairs, asking for her daughter, Viktoria would offer the same squeaky reply: “Mom, I’m busy creating.” Not much has changed since then, except perhaps the bathroom and the ingredients. Ebba represents the culmination of all the things that made that one little girl feel “abundant within.” Viktoria still believes if you can feel your own abundance, anything is possible. Complimentary gift-wrapping available. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ur children are our future, and as always, their futures begin long before they enter kindergarten and begin formal schooling. Established in 1957, Lissie’s Katonah Playschool is a private, nonsectarian, early childhood center operating on the premises of the First Presbyterian Church in the heart of the hamlet. Children of all races, colors, creeds and abilities are welcome to begin their learning here. Licensed by New York State Office of Children and Family Services and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Lissie’s Katonah Playschool offers preschool classes for 2- to 5-year-olds, afternoon pre-K science enrichment, and before- and after-school care for schoolage children, as well as the pre-K children. “Lissie’s provides a happy, healthy educational experience,” says director Anne Harris. “Children are encouraged to develop social-emotional, language, cognitive, fine and gross motor, and self-help skills.” Through developmentally appropriate practice and an enriching environment, children strengthen their skills through play-based activities. “Research has shown that children who have good social and emotional skills and can get along with their friends are the best learners,” says Anne. “It’s my opinion that this prepares children to succeed in school and in life.” Special Lunch Bunch classes in art, drama, tae kwon do, yoga, science and cooking — even math arts — can extend a preschooler’s school day, and Lissie’s Katonah Playschool is exceptional in its professional licensing to care for older students before and after elementary school. Call for a class schedule and appointment to learn more about the unforgettable experience offered at Lissie’s Katonah Playschool.

Soon to celebrate their 90th anniversary, Bedford Stone & Masonry Supply, a fifth-generation family-owned business, is one of the area’s largest operations — certainly the premier site for masonry and landscape materials. Everett Burbank started Bedford Stone & Masonry in 1925 as a manufacturing plant, but 45 years ago the family turned its focus to stone, masonry and landscape supplies. There’s an enormous selection of natural stone and brick suitable for walkways, patios, pool decks, walls and garden paths, plus mulch, cement, sand, drainage products, decorative gravel, winter ice melters and traction sand. See Bedford Stone’s expansive outdoor garden display with examples of various stone and brick use — a collage of walls, paths, patios, edging and steps. An indoor space across the street showcases the extensive uses of thin brick and thin stone — perfect for beautifying concrete foundations, chimneys, fireplace surrounds and backsplashes. Lightweight, so no footings or foundations needed! Contractors and homeowners appreciate Bedford Stone’s neat, welcoming atmosphere and the family’s help and advice — as solid as the products they sell. he Early Childhood Center at Temple Shaaray Tefila embraces individuality and helps lead children on the magical journey of growth with respect toward personal development, while regularly infusing Jewish values and traditions into classroom life. We provide a developmentally appropriate hands-on environment for every child. Our program emphasizes the development of the whole child: intellectually, cognitively, socially, physically and spiritually. We develop our curriculum around the interests of the individual child and simultaneously infuse opportunities for specialists in nature, sign language, yoga, music and movement, and monthly social action experiences. Students learn about their rich Jewish heritage both in their classrooms and through weekly Shabbat celebrations with Rabbi Jason Nevarez, holiday celebrations, songs and stories. The Early Childhood Center at Temple Shaaray Tefila is licensed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and is a participating member of the Jewish Education Project and Project SEED. Staff members are hired for their warmth, experience and knowledge of child development. Certifications include master’s and bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education, with all staff trained in CPR and pediatric first aid. Schedule a visit to learn more about the Early Childhood Center and its four core values: celebrate, learn, play and connect. Hours: 2’s program: Monday through Friday, from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. (children may attend three or five mornings); 3’s and 4’s programs: Monday through Friday, from 9:15 a.m. to noon. David M. Chatowsky, owner/artist

“Provenance” indicates a guide to authenticity or quality. And indeed, Provenance Gallery, across from the Bedford Hills train station, is just that — an authentic spot offering artwork, classes and, even more importantly, a sense of community. This is David Chatowsky’s working studio, where he fashions custom murals, small, intimate still lifes and portraits of children, parents and pets — even equestrian scenes so indicative of northern Westchester. A painter of large murals and public art, David’s been active in the art world for more than 20 years. A Rhode Island native, he has public art pieces on permanent exhibit from Boston to Block Island to the Florida Museum of Natural History. “We’ve completely brought back and revitalized this building,” David says. “Like the artwork, it’s unique and precious, something special that people are not going to find anywhere else. We invite you to visit.” Special events include evening “relaxing adult time together,” as David calls it, “a time to create a work of art, something very beautiful that customers can take home and be proud of.” Hours: Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call for extended holiday hours.

t Wooster School, our learning environment is built on the bedrock of relationships, because we know people learn best when they feel physically, intellectually and emotionally safe. In small class groupings (five to 15), learners develop relationships with teachers and fellow students as they acquire intellectual and emotional intelligence. Academic skills, like reading, writing and computation, are taught directly and are used to observe, analyze, understand, collaborate and create in multiple contexts. We don’t simply create “academic rigor” for our students, but rather our students build skills and pursue intellectual rigor through our academic programs. Students don’t compete with each other; they work together so that everyone achieves. At Wooster, the dispositions to persevere, empathize, collaborate, inquire and create are also developed by blending art, music, theater, sports and fitness, technology and our new maker programs into the daily curriculum of the school. (Extended after-school opportunities begin in the middle school.) Whether a student is developing advanced skills or is participating for the first time, the opportunities to be involved and improve are always there. As students mature, they also learn to manage each other and maintain our campus through our daily Jobs Program. Our commitment is that every Wooster student is seen, heard and meaningfully engaged every day. Wooster School (pre-K through 12th grade) is an independent, co-educational college preparatory day school, serving students from Fairfield and Westchester counties. A northern Westchester landmark and destination for three decades, the Yellow Monkey Antiques, owned by Heidi Johnston for 15 years, is the antidote to big-box furniture stores. Susan Westlake

Susan Westlake has been tutoring students for the English portion of the SAT and ACT for more than 10 years. With a degree in education from the University of Michigan, and experience teaching middle school, high school and college, she enjoys working one-on-one with her students. She says it is gratifying to know that the things she teaches — vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, and essay writing — are all things that add value not only for the SAT and the ACT, but for high school, college and life. In addition to tutoring, Susan practices law. She finds that her background as a corporate and trademark attorney, and her experience as an editor of the Law Review at the University of San Diego School of Law, enhance the value she adds to each student’s educational development. She says there is no one formula to prepping students for the college exams. “Some students come with an outstanding vocabulary, the ability to discern nuances in passages presented for analysis, a strong knowledge of grammar, and the ability to write cogently. Other students have a different starting point,” Susan says. For each, she partners with her students to help them hone their skills and maximize their potential on the exams. Hours: By appointment, in Goldens Bridge.

Learning music at a young age gives children a lifelong appreciation of its beauty. Early successes on piano, Suzuki violin and cello sow the seeds of musical understanding. As students mature, they participate in solo and ensemble playing, and as talent progresses, chamber music, rock and jazz bands deepen a child’s love for music. Summer music camp, musical theater training, student recitals and faculty performances add momentum to the curriculum. Where can young people gain these experiences? At the Amadeus Conservatory of Music & Theater, where an internationally known faculty instills a love of music in students. All ages (preschool to adult) are welcome, and all levels of expertise are accommodated for the study of all instruments, voice, theory, and computer composition. Individual lessons are offered in Fellowship Hall at St. Matthew’s Church in Bedford; pianists play on a superb grand piano. Preschool instrumental classes Thursdays, from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Voted “Best Music School in Westchester” by Westchester magazine. Come see why. Hours: Open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

ippowam Cisqua School’s mission is to promote critical thinking, individual development and personal excellence. Parents are drawn to Rippowam Cisqua because of the small class sizes, joyful learning environment and dedicated teachers who challenge students to discover and explore their talents to the fullest. Rippowam Cisqua is committed to a dynamic program of academics, the arts and athletics in an atmosphere that promotes intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. Rippowam Cisqua believes that learning is a shared experience, the responsibility of both students and teachers. We urge active student involvement and seek to provide a rich curriculum for children of different abilities and learning styles. Our approach to learning incorporates experimentation, simulation and collective and individual problem-solving, as well as traditional lecture, discussion and skill development techniques — all toward the goal of attaining excellence. Students are challenged to demonstrate their competence in a variety of subjects, with emphasis placed on the written word, throughout their school career. The process by which children arrive at a final product is an important part of their education. Interaction between adults and children is fundamental here. Warmth, humor and compassion characterize individual student-teacher relationships. We encourage communication of ideas and feelings to help develop understanding and cooperation. The adults seek to help children develop self-discipline and sound judgment. As a community, we require respect, honesty and common decency at all times. Our goal is to graduate students who are confident and knowledgeable lifelong learners. We strive to be a school of joyous and enlightened learning: a place where children come, not where they are sent. Hours: Call for an appointment.

e’re new to the neighborhood but we’ve been friends for years. Landmark Preschool is pleased to announce its newest location at 44 Village Green in Bedford. Starting in the fall of 2015, Landmark Bedford will be offering programs for 3- and 4-year-olds. Preschool is often a child’s first experience outside the home, and it’s an important place for a child to develop confidence and independence. With 40 years of experience in early education, Landmark Preschool has developed differentiated learning strategies to best meet each child’s interests and needs — all in a nurturing and supportive environment. We’re interested in learning what makes your child unique and giving him or her the skills to develop that uniqueness. The three-hour day at Landmark Bedford will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and will balance social-emotional, cognitive, and physical skill development. The program will include early literacy instruc-

tion and math skill development, as well as art, science, technology, and music instruction with classroom specialists. These activities are designed to foster a love of learning and to develop readiness for reading, writing letters, and understanding basic math and science concepts. Children will also enjoy outdoor play in a new playground and cooking activities. Landmark Preschool is a division of Ridgefield Academy, a nonsectarian, not-for-profit independent day school that educates more than 600 Westchester and Fairfield county students enrolled across its three existing campuses. Parents who are interested in the program are invited to visit the preschool campus at our Ridgefield location. After 40 years as your Connecticut neighbor, Landmark Preschool is happy and excited to be coming to New York. We’re looking forward to partnering with families in the Bedford and Pound Ridge community. Prior to founding Hometown Nannies+ in 1990, Jayne Ehrlich was a teacher, a counselor and a member of the screenwriter’s guild. As an educator and mother, Jayne knows that each family has very specific domestic needs. She only seeks out candidates who she herself would hire. Requirements for domestic applicants are stringent, screening is thorough, and each applicant meets with Jayne — usually more than once. Client families receive a comprehensive file on each domestic candidate and two interviews are advised. Over the past 27 years, Hometown Nannies+ has placed thousands of world-class baby nurses, nannies, governesses, housekeepers, couples, cooks, valets, household and estate managers, companions and cnas, personal assistants, and more. She also specializes in special-needs nannies. Although her client list is confidential, Jayne reveals that three of her first jobs were to find: party staff for the late Frank Sinatra; an upstairs maid for the late Miss (Anne) Bancroft; and an Italian-speaking, baseball-playing nanny for the family of a major movie star. “And that was just the beginning.” she notes. Jayne’s 27 years of recruiting experience, screening expertise, thoroughness, and boutique service have ensured successful staffing for the most discerning homes, both locally and globally.

he Long Ridge School, an independent day school for 2-year-olds through grade five, is located on a beautiful 14-acre woodland campus in North Stamford. The school serves students from southern Connecticut and Westchester. At Long Ridge, teachers work with each child’s natural curiosity to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The school believes children should explore, experiment and experience the joy of learning in a caring, exciting and challenging academic community. Interdisciplinary themes connect the curricular areas and excite children about learning, lend context to new information, help children learn to make logical associations and develop their critical-thinking skills. In encouraging kindergarten readiness skills, there’s a combination of hands-on, teacher-directed learning and child-directed free play, striking the right balance for children ages 2 to 5 from Pound Ridge and surrounding communities. Director Kirstin Zarras cites the Play School’s “developmentally appropriate curriculum that’s an exciting and meaningful combination of learning and play. Carmel Archambault with Sadie, Chester and Annie

Carmel Archambault may not have dogs of her own, but she’s still completely in love with them! Her Pound Ridge Pet Care invites pups of all ages, sizes and spots into her airconditioned home for daycare, overnight or vacation — with flexible hours, unusual in the pet care world. “I have up to six dogs here in the house at any given time; they’re here while I’m cooking, watching TV and in my office,” says Carmel. “No leashes, kennels or cages, and the dogs sleep on my bed if they want to and go in the car for errands. Dogs are socialized and exercised here, and they’re relaxed here.” Pound Ridge Pet Care features two fenced-in yards, for separating dogs by size if needed. To ensure compatibility, Carmel asks owners to bring dogs in for a “meet and greet” before signing up. She’s fully insured, and dogs must be vaccinated. Calling her home “dog heaven on earth,” Carmel administers medications and even takes dogs to the vet or groomer. Call for appointment.

Melissa Chepuru, MSW and Yadagiri Chepuru, M.D.

Not responding well to antidepressant medications? Having difficulty taking what’s prescribed for you due to uncomfortable side effects? Dr. Yadagiri Chepuru offers an alternative at TMS Center of Westchester in Yonkers. Transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy (TMS) is a new antidepressant treatment, which has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients suffering from depression and who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from prior treatment. Dr. Chepuru provides TMS on an outpatient basis in the comfort of his private office. Magnetic pulses stimulate the brain to release serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine — chemicals that occur naturally in the brain and that help to reverse the effects of depression. TMS is a noninvasive, nonsystemic, safe treatment with little or no side effects. Dr. Chepuru is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with a subspecialty in geriatric psychiatry. He is chief of psychiatry at Riverside Health Care Systems in Yonkers. Dr. Chepuru has extensive experience in treating mood disorders and other psychiatric conditions and is a trained Suboxone provider for the treatment of opiate addictions.

ew York School of Esthetics offers the New York State 600-hour esthetics course — which includes facials, makeup and waxing — and which leads to eligibility to sit for the state-board testing procedures. It is our mission to provide an exciting, well-planned curriculum for students, one that will put you ahead in this fast-growing industry. The function of the school is to provide a professional environment where the student learns the theory and principles (hands-on) in esthetics. We will prepare all students for their New York State esthetic written and practical board exams. The school offers more certifications in the undergraduate program than any other school of its kind. These certifications include microdermabrasion, chemical peel, body treatments and teeth whitening. New York School of Esthetics also offers advanced laser hair removal and advanced makeup. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions that include working with plastic surgeons and skin care specialists. The school’s graduates are employed in dermatologists’ offices and day spas throughout Westchester, Rockland, Manhattan and surrounding areas. As one student said, “I learned so much compared to other schools of esthetics and they made us feel more like family rather than just friends! I graduated knowing that I am a professional with great knowledge in skin care!” New York School of Esthetics is fully accredited by National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences, Inc., (NACCAS) and offers financial aid to those who qualify. We participate in the Pell Grant program, Direct Student Loans and Parent Plus Loans.

It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”
