From Father Baer:

Merry Christmas! Welcome Home to Transfiguration!

On behalf of all of us at Transfiguration Catholic Church, I offer Christmas greetings to you and to your loved ones. One of the great joys of this Holy Feast is to welcome so many to our Christmas Masses. It’s a reunion of college students who are home for the holidays, grandparents and in-laws who have come into town, and friends of friends of parishioners. We are glad you are celebrating Christmas here! If you are looking for a parish home, we invite you to join Transfiguration. We have 1,450 households, consisting of families and couples and single people of all ages. Our parishioners live in an area that extends from Stillwater in the east to Saint Paul in the west. Above all, we are a Catholic parish that loves Jesus Christ and the Catholic Christ Jesus Ou r Lord, Sh ine in Us!

Faith! Hospitality is central to our mission, and I hope you have been warmly welcomed here at Mass. You may notice that one of our distinctive greetings comes in the form of numerous babies and little ones “making a joyful noise to the Lord” in Church. Young families are welcome at Transfiguration! This ol’ world can be a lonely place for some. Catholics need one another, to grow in faith, in prayer, in a life of charity. Have you been looking for a spiritual home? At Transfiguration, we’re not ashamed of being Catholic, and we invite you to join us on the adventure of following Jesus Christ on the path to heaven. Joy to the world! The Lord has come!

New Year Resolution by Gretchen Sonnen, Director of Parish Life When the New Year rolls around, many people focus on physical or personal, relational, or intellectual goals. This year, we invite you to join us in focusing on a Spiritual goal alongside any other New Year’s goals you may have.

by Lisa DeLara, TCCW Communications

Our Transfiguration Council of Catholic Women continues to be busy this year! This past year, we have had very successful Garage Sales and Bake Sales. The profits of these fundraising events helps us to give back to the Parish as well as fund our Women's Mornings of Reflection and our Our Lady of Mount Carmel Scholarship that we give out annually to a girl in her Senior year of High School.

First step: Grow in your personal relationship with the Lord through one of the following groups offered at Transfiguration: Walking with Purpose Women’s Group, Jeff Cavins Bible Study, Every Child Reads the Bible, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), Young Adult Men’s Group, Young Adult Women’s Group, Man Night, Midnight Watchmen, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, or the Cenacle Groups. Second step: Volunteer at the Parish in one of the following areas looking for volunteers: Children’s Liturgy of the Word, Sunday Nursery, Lectoring, Extraordinary Ministry of Holy Communion, Hospitality Ministry, Altar Serving, Transfiguration Council of Catholic Women (TCCW), Children's or Adult Choir, Knights of Columbus, Church Environment, Funeral Ministry. Please contact Gretchen Sonnen for more information on any of these groups or volunteer opportunities. Every group is happy to welcome new participants! gsonnen@transfigurationmn.org

In the new year, we will continue to be busy. On January 30, we invite all women of the Parish (and beyond!) to join us for our Women's Retreat to help us all get ready for Lent. The theme of the retreat is “Trusting Jesus” and our guest speakers will be Bishop Andrew Cozzens and Liz Kelly. Tickets can be purchased online on our Parish Website (www.transfigurationmn.org) or in the Parish Office. Tickets purchased before January 18 are only $15.00, and after January 19, the cost is $20.00. The retreat runs from 8:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m. Why not set aside a few hours to spend some time with our Lord? The TCCW has also committed to a Holy Hour in Adoration every Wednesday from 7:00—8:00 p.m. At least two of our members will be there each week. We know that this time will be fruitful, not only for our individual members, but for our Transfiguration Council of Catholic Women as a whole. We are also always hoping more women will join us as members of the TCCW. The cost is free and the time commitment is whatever you can manage. We have registration cards near the Welcome Desk. We invite you to fill one out and either bring it to the Parish Office or bring it to our next meeting which will be held at the end of March. We hope you can join us!

Year of Mercy by Gretchen Sonnen, Director of Parish Life

Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy, which began on Tuesday, December 8. Pope Francis, in announcing the Great Jubilee Year, said, " I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God’s mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Do not forget that God forgives all, and God forgives always. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness. Let us henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey: our penitential journey, our year-long journey with an open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God." 2015 Harvest Produce Distribution: A Huge Success by Gretchen Sonnen, Director of Parish Life

At the invitation of Second Harvest Heartland (SHH), one of the largest food banks in the country, the Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf (CCEFS) partnered with Transfiguration Catholic Church this past summer and fall to host 6 produce “fairs” for area families in need. The goal was to capture farm-field fresh produce that did not have a retail outlet (so would potentially go to waste) and distribute it via metro area food shelves to their communities. Increasing the distribution of fresh produce among Oakdale residents by partnering with Transfiguration Catholic Church was a win-win situation. Beginning in mid-July through mid-October, 6 distribution events or fairs took place in the church’s parking lot. Pallets of produce (500 pounds or more per pallet), were dropped off on Thursday mornings. The type of produce generally reflected the growing season — lots of melon and zucchini early, corn late summer and then plenty of winter squash in October. At each event there were a minimum of 4 types of fruit and vegetables available with the variety growing as the season unfolded. Volunteers repackaged the produce to more “family” friendly sizes. At 10:00 a.m. at each event, community households lined up to get their choice of what was available. Feedback from customers and volunteers alike was that these events were a resounding success. Over the growing season, the 6 fairs provided nearly 25,000 pounds of produce to 600 households for an average of over 40 pounds of produce per family per event. Over 100 volunteers helped out. All told, over 13 varieties of fruit and produce were provided to families in need. Based on the positive response from all involved, plans are underway to continue this event next year. CCEFS thanks Transfiguration Catholic Church for being a wonderful, supportive partner. In addition to Oakdale, CCEFS serves the cities of Landfall and Woodbury, as well as the residents of southern Maplewood. Founded over 30 years ago by several faith communities, CCEFS now serves over 500 households with 45,000 pounds of food and personal care items each month.

Young Adults Group

by Justin Kortuem, Director of Faith Formation & Youth Ministry

This was the first full year of the Transfiguration Youngs Adult (21—35) group. We have had a consistent group of over 30 young adults join us for co-ed softball, the Lord’s Day dinner, volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, Saturday men’s and women’s small groups and our monthly dinners on the third Sunday of the month following the 6:00 p.m. Mass. Here's a photo from our most recent Christmas party. Join us anytime in the Gathering Space for dinner on those Sundays and learn about the group and enjoy a free meal.

Choirs and Music Programs at Transfiguration Catholic Church by Mary Demko, Director of Music This has been an exciting year for the music programs at Transfiguration Catholic Church! In April, our regular Adult Choir (ages High School and up) was asked to sing at the Confirmation Mass for our Parish, held at the Cathedral. It was wonderful to see and sing from the newlyremodeled choir loft at our Archdiocesan Cathedral.

Choir Camp 2015

As happens every year, our Adult Choir asks for additional singers for the Christmas and Easter Masses – we were fortunate to have many “occasional choir members” – 4th Grade and older - sing for these Holy Days. For the first time here at Transfiguration, we held a Summer Choir Camp for youth – approximately 40 young people joined us for a week of singing, learning about our Faith, and lots of time to make new friends. The Camp ended with the choir singing at the Vigil Mass for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many of the young people who took part in the Camp moved on to join our newly-formed St. Gregory Choristers Youth Choir – this choir sang at two weekend Masses and also on Christmas Eve. In addition to the St. Gregory Choristers Choir, two sections of a class for younger children, aged preK through 3rd Grade, have been in full swing: the “Children of the King” music program has had twelve children participate, and these children will hopefully If you have any interest in learning more about or enrolling in any of these programs, please email Mary Demko, Director of Music, mdemko@transfigurationmn.org.

2015 – A Year of Renewal and Progress by John Holper and Chuck Armstrong, Parish Trustees As we celebrate Christmas, we have so much to be grateful for during this season of Advent. Both of us, as Parish Trustees, have had the privilege to experience first-hand the many blessings that Transfiguration has received and bestowed this past year. While the journey is never easy, Transfiguration is on the right path. Here are just a few of the wonderful blessings from this past year that we should all be thankful for. The Strengthening of our Catholic Faith: Transfiguration’s mission is to be a Parish that is empowered by the Holy Spirit to shine with the light of the Transfigured Christ through worship, education, stewardship and outreach. Consistent with its mission, and because of Father Baer’s steadfast leadership and vision for our Parish and School, Transfiguration has come alive in its Catholic identity and faith. More than ever, 2015 was a year of opportunity for spiritual growth. Whether it is daily Mass and Reconciliation or Eucharistic Adoration, there is a way for each of us to grow in our Catholic faith. 2015 will be remembered as a year that saw Transfiguration renew and strengthen its Catholic identity and Faith. 2015 was a year where active involvement in numerous groups offered by the Parish expanded and became stronger. The TCCW, Walking with Purpose, Catholic Man Night, the Cenacle Group, the Young Adults Group, the various Bible studies, and all of the other active groups at Transfiguration all saw growth and provided opportunities for everyone to get involved in Parish life and strengthen their Catholic faith. There is something for everyone; all you have to do is take the first step! 2015 was also a year that saw the continued spiritual growth of our young people. Thanks to our dedicated and hardworking staff, our Family Formation and Confirmation programs are thriving and our young people are learning what it means to be a Catholic, as they grow in their understanding, and embrace their Catholic Faith. During this season of Advent, ask yourself, how I can become part of the spiritual reawakening and strengthening of the Catholic faith that is occurring at Transfiguration? OUR MISSION IS GROWING! LET’S KEEP IT GOING! The Continuing Commitment to Fiscal Responsibility: Like almost all parishes, Transfiguration has its own set of financial issues. Despite these issues, 2015 was a year where Transfiguration continued to make strides to improve its financial health in a fiscally responsible manner. Parish leadership continued to diligently fulfill the commitment it made to all Parishioners to not spend money that the Parish does not have. Parish Leadership also continued to plan for the Parish’s future financial obligations. For example, after paying off the line of credit in 2014, a decision was made to continue the second collection for the purpose of funding upcoming capital improvements. This decision has resulted in funds being available to meet our capital improvement needs. Your response has been great and the second collection for our Big Ticket Capital Improvement Fund continues to be strong. Because of your generosity and commitment, the Parish was able to begin repairing our parking lot, and we are now planning for upcoming capital improvements that are badly needed.

Chuck Armstrong and John Holper, Parish Trustees

Parish leadership also continued to make progress on our long term debt. While the road ahead will have its challenges, we continue to make strides to get Transfiguration’s financial house in order. These strides, however, would not be possible without the support or our Parishioners and others that choose to support our parish. Thank you to everyone who generously supported Transfiguration through weekly collections, dedicated gifts, and participation. We would also be remiss if we did not extend a special thanks to Erin Ethier for her tireless efforts and commitment to Transfiguration’s future. Without Erin’s strong leadership and skill dedication as Parish Administrator, we could not have made the financial progress we did during the last year. Thank you, Erin! The Continuing Commitment to our School: 2015 was a challenging year for our school. It was a year of change and a year that required many hard decisions to be made. Despite all of the challenges, the Parish remains committed to the long term success of our School. Parish and School leadership are committed to increasing enrollment, strengthening the School’s Catholic Identity, and ensuring that each family that entrusts Transfiguration Catholic School with their child’s education knows that their child is receiving a Catholic education that is second to none. Our School is our largest mission at Transfiguration and our students are our part of our future. Our obligation as a Parish, as Parish and School leadership and staff, as parents and parishioners, is to ensure that our students are being formed in their Catholic Faith and receiving the best possible academic education. As we move forward in this great season of Advent, let’s reflect on the blessings that Transfiguration Catholic Church and School has received this past year and all the blessing that our vibrant Parish affords to each of us. It is our honor and privilege to serve as Trustees for this wonderful Parish community.

by Rebecca Minogue, Special Events & Communications Coordinator For the past 23 years, Transfiguration parishioners have provided Christmas gifts to those in need through the Giving Tree program. Kathy Dailey is the Giving Tree’s selfless leader. She, along with Pat Gemza, organizes this incredible undertaking. Starting in October, a hotline is set up for families to call to request Christmas gifts. Then, each person is called back by volunteers—313 phone calls were made this year. Volunteers then hand-write the requested gifts on paper ornaments and put them on trees in the Gathering Space. We also made ornaments for St. Joseph's Home for Children, families at Options for Women East and Canvas Health. The total ornaments put on the trees this year was 480. Parishioners are invited to take an ornament to buy a gift, then wrap it and bring it to Church 3-4 weeks before Christmas. Volunteers organize the gifts so that they are ready to be picked up two weeks prior to Christmas. Kathy Dailey has about 30 volunteers who assist with the process. All families feel blessed to be a part of our Giving Tree. In addition to gifts, many families receive Christmas Turkey Dinner Baskets largely donated by Transfiguration School families. We have cash donations from Parishioners totaling over $1,000 for food and gifts. To all who participated in the 2015 Giving Tree, and to our wonderful volunteers, thank you for your generosity!

Boy Scouts of America at Transfiguration by Gadder Feaman

Helping a boy grow into a good man is an awesome responsibility. We admire the men among us who exhibit honesty, courage and faithfulness, but we often overlook the fact that these noble traits do not sprout up overnight. Honesty, courage and faithfulness are character traits developed over a person's lifetime. In fact, the sooner boys are given opportunities to develop these traits, the stronger their character will shine as men. For over 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has provided opportunities for boys to develop their character and grow into good men. Transfiguration offers rich Scouting programs that give boys chances to learn and grow while having fun. Cub Scout Pack 240 offers boys in Kindergarten through 5th Grade and their families events like the Pinewood Derby, field trips, service projects and outdoor excursions. Boy Scout Troop 240 offers boys 11-18 with exciting outdoor adventures and the challenging path to Eagle Scout. Scouts generally meet at Transfiguration Catholic School on Monday nights. For more information on Scouting at Transfiguration, contact Gero "Gadder" Feaman at 651-331-6356 or gerofeaman@yahoo.com.

Protestant and Catholic: What’s the Difference? Father Baer offered a 3-part presentation on the distinctive elements of Catholicism. The series was the opening portion of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (“R.C.I.A.”), which continues for 12 weeks on Thursday, January 7. The R.C.I.A. welcomes anyone who is interested in becoming Catholic at Easter, as well as Catholics who wish to learn more about their Faith.

from Melinda and Tom Stella: "Tom and I are very blessed to have the option of sending our children to such a wonderful Family Faith Formation program. We are both learning along with our children in the home lessons and in the classes, as there is so much to learn about our rich Catholic Faith. My favorite example of how Faith Formation has deepened my youngest son’s Faith is when he notices the color that Father is wearing at each Mass and then knows it is a Feast Day, or a day that celebrates a Martyr. They all pay much better attention to the Mass now because they understand it so much more. Father does a great job teaching us all something new during the talks to the parents and we always look forward to this special time he spends with us. The Totus Tuus summer program is also something my six children have participated in and loved since it started at Transfiguration a few years ago. The younger ones have a great time all week long, and the older ones get a deeper formation from some very well formed young adults, many of whom have stayed my children’s friends a year or two later." Faith Formation & Youth Ministry by Justin Kortuem, Director of Family Formation and Youth Ministry

2015 has been a great year in Faith Formation and Youth Ministry. We've seen an increase in participation in Youth Ministry events this last year. Here are some highlights from last year and things to look forward to in this coming year: • 52 Family Formation and School students received their First Holy Communion. • 67 Students were Confirmed. • Over 100 students participated in Totus Tuus in the middle of June. • 17 Middle School and High School students went to Extreme Faith Camp at the end of June and we can’t wait to have more next year. • More than 30 students participated in Summer Stretch to serve and have fun in many areas in the community, including Options for Women East and Feed My Starving Children. • We also had another good year for our Sunday Night Youth Group that meets in the Harvester Room after the 6:00 p.m. Sunday Mass. Over 20 kids participated throughout the year. The focus of this group is continual discipleship for our youth…along with a lot of games and fun. Our main focus again this year was to get more students involved with events and it has been successful so far. We always want more to join in order to experience all kinds of fun, get a sense of friendship and community, and of course grow in their Faith. Check the Bulletin Board, the Website Tubing at Lake Elmo Jan. 18 and our Parish Bulletin for upcoming events or highlights from events past. Virtues in Practice by Gretchen Sonnen, Director of Parish Life

Virtues in Practice is a program written by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia for Grade School aged students to grow closer to Jesus by imitating His life and virtues. The program is designed so that the whole School and Parish studies the same virtue each month. The program covers 27 virtues over a three-year cycle, with 81 Saints held as models of the virtues. Parents and children are finding out quickly that this program assists them in growing in Faith and virtue in easy and practical ways. In November, families worked on the virtue of Reverence. One child practiced this by making the Sign of the Cross as he passed by any Catholic Church. He wrote, “This helped me to keep my eyes open to look where God is.” Virtues in Practice materials are available at the Parish Office for individuals or families to purchase for $5.
