s a REALTOR, we have numerous opportunities to impact our industry. Are you one of those people who will give of your time, talents, or your funds to make a positive impact in the real estate profession? It may be a thankless job, or it may be many years before the results of your efforts are realized. However, as a member of the Women’s Council of REALTORS (WCR), I am very grateful to the women who took their time, money, and talents to the National Association of REALTORS (NAR) in 1938 to advocate for women in real estate. I am also very grateful to the nine women who formed the Austin Chapter of the WCR. We now have a vibrant, thriving association of women and the men who support them that would not have been created without these volunteers. Do you want to make a difference in any aspect of the profession? If you have the heart of a volunteer, you are needed in so many ways. Volunteering in an industry related organization has its advantages including meeting people from different companies and/or organizations—the synergy of working together

and the exchange of ideas are energizing, referrals grow from members of the organization from other parts of the country as you expand your influence and attend national and state meetings, and exposure rises to state and national meeting procedures including parliamentary procedures, election processes, and board meeting procedures. The advantages to your personal life are also significant—a volunteer position will quickly teach leadership skills such as public speaking, chairing a committee, fundraising, and working with others to successfully put on an event. The success of your efforts will greatly build confidence which spills over into every aspect of your business and your life. To see a home built from the ground up as with working with Habitat for Humanity is a heart-warming reward itself. Donating to TREPAC is a great way to make a difference in the laws that will govern the industry. Those who contribute are the heart and soul of the profession. Get involved. You will reap the benefits of a career worth having, and a life worth living. RL
