In this issue we visit with Action Realty’s Daniel Matusiak. His insight and marketing initiatives for luxury properties are opening doors and changing the game in Sarasota. We all need a little bit of style and Saks’ Becca Smith will orchestrate the panache to make us styling smart. Our visit with Kerrie Lehnert of Kitchens by Kerrie showcases why her designs and custom cabinet lines are setting the trend in today’s kitchens and baths. Last we go inside the Van Wezel Foundation with Monica Van Buskirk. This behind the scenes look illustrates what the foundation does for our community, beyond supporting the Van Wezel. Also, it’s time to say farewell to Lauren (Phinney) Dorsett. Besides her anchor role at ABC7 she was a devoted supporter of many causes in our area and a generous donor of her time to help others. Lauren, thank you for your friendship and support of our community. Best in your new endeavors! Happy Holidays.

REAL | luxury BECCA Z. SMITH: LIFE, STYLED By Lalaena Gonzalez-Figueroa

“I am dedicated to fashion and am here to assist women in discovering their own personal styles.”

At an early age, Becca Z. Smith was drawn to fashion. Playing dress up with treasures from her grandparents’ trunk, she delved into the glamour of frilly dresses, charming hats, ladylike handbags, unique jewelry and high-heeled shoes. “I remember how beautiful I felt parading up and down the sidewalk, stumbling in heels five sizes too big,” she reminisces. She never quite grew out of it. For Becca, the idea of fashion evolved from the simple excitement of a new look, to the significant impact of well-placed pieces. Her passion drove her to explore her own sense of style, and it inspired her to help others express themselves. “I became a fashion stylist because I love its transformative nature,” she reveals. “Through fashion we reveal our personalities.” Becca’s specialty is in honing a client’s personal style – what she describes as the style that best represents an individual’s qualities, attributes and lifestyle through highly individualized clothing, jewelry, cosmetics and living spaces. She explains, “I am dedicated to fashion and am here to assist women in discovering their own personal styles.” Becca’s goal: to help her clients integrate style into their everyday lives so that they have the confidence that comes from looking their best. Saks Fifth Avenue, she says, is the ideal venue to launch their fashion journey. “I help enrich my clients’ lives by teaching that fashion can be joyful and fun,” Becca says. “At the same time, I want them to understand that what they wear speaks volumes about who they are. My clients are sharing in my vision to make a great impression with their unique personal style.”

Becca Z. Smith Fashion Stylist/Designer Consultant Saks Fifth Avenue 3501 Tamiami Trail Sarasota, FL 34239 (941) 223.6643 Rebecca_Smith@S5A.com

Her style speaks for itself. “I love European fashion,” Becca smiles. “My favorite is Versace, which epitomizes over-the-top sexiness and glamour. Then there’s my other favorite, Chanel. Who doesn’t like this French high fashion house specializing in haute couture and ready-to-wear clothes, luxury goods and fashion accessories?” She continues, “Coco Chanel catered to a woman’s taste for elegance.” Adding a bit of an edge to her own personal style is Becca’s signature; she reveals that her favorite shoe is a Christian Louboutin leopard red-heeled pump. Becca’s creativity is showcased in her company, We’ve Got Style, which offers image consulting and closet consultation services. While she revels in the opportunity

to assist shoppers in the Saks Designer Salon, she also assists clients in eking out new or updated looks with their own existing pieces. She is highly skilled at transforming a closet into a workable, wearable wardrobe that suits individual body types, while honoring each client’s personality and lifestyle. “I cover everything from musthave basics that are the foundation for every great wardrobe, to the accessories that will provide a flawless finish,” she smiles. “Image matters,” Becca continues. “First impressions – whether positive or negative – are made in an instant. They are strong and they are long lasting.” The implications of personal style, she notes, are substantial. “An individual’s appearance has the potential to strongly influence other people’s perceptions of that person’s personality and financial success, authority and trustworthiness, confidence and intelligence, and even her suitability for hire or promotion,” she observes. Because she believes in the importance of a positive image, We’ve Got Style has launched the “Beauty for a Cause” campaign, which supports charitable organizations assisting women and children in need throughout the community as well as individuals impacted by breast cancer. “Inner beauty is reflected in our outward appearance,” she muses. “When you discover the balance between inner and outer beauty, you will look and feel sensational all the time.” Of her desire to give back Becca remarks, “As I grow older I discover that I have two hands: one for helping myself and the other to others.” Becca looks forward to making the world a more beautiful and stylish place, one client at a time.

MAKING OTHERS GREEN WITH ENVY BY FRED KRASNE

2014 Panamera E-Hybrid Why has Porsche the leading sports car builder decided to build a hybrid technology based vehicle? It started in 2010 with the Cayenne S Hybrid. Designed as a parallel full hybrid, it consistently combines typical Porsche performance with continuous improvement in engine efficiency. At the same time as the Cayenne S Hybrid, the 918 Spyder concept supercar also became the overwhelming star at the 2010 Geneva motor show. A plug-in high performance hybrid with amazing lap times on the Nurburgring Nordschleife and impressively low fuel consumption. The 918 Spyder will go into series production in late 2013. Porsche is consistently future oriented. Which is reflected in the new Panamera S E-Hybrid, a plugin hybrid sports sedan which can be charged from an electrical socket that now consolidates all of Porsche’s know how, and is continuing Porsche’s e-mobility journey. This means the combination of forward-looking drive concepts and clever charging systems and in-car functions that can be controlled from a smart phone. It offers greater efficiency and suitability for everyday use by the driver but, with acceleration and performance that are anything but everyday.

12 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

I had the opportunity to drive the new Panamera E-Hybrid this past August in Park City, Utah at elevations ranging from 4,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level on winding mountain roads. The performance, the handling, and the braking were all what I expected from a Porsche sports sedan and more. I was most impressed with operating the vehicle in full electric mode with up to 22 miles of range, and with speeds up to 83 miles per hour! What was reassuring was with a push of a button, I could have the engine recharge the battery within an hour of continuous driving and then revert back to full battery operation if so desired.

“ Porsche is consistently future oriented....”

This car is capable of top speed of 167 mph, and acceleration of 0-60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. The supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine generates 333 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and the electric motor adds an additional 83 hp to the overall system performance - creating a total of 416 hp. For the discerning buyer looking for the best in performance and fuel efficiency, the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid is the car going in the right direction...the future.

REAL | luxury KITCHENS BY KERRIE: THE ARTFUL INTEGRATION OF HISTORY By Lalaena Gonzalez-Figueroa AND INNOVATION For as long as she can remember, Kerrie Lehnert has been actively involved in historical preservation. As a child she helped her father Ken restore classic cars, a process that included painstaking research into culture as well as craftsmanship. “He talked to drivers, obtained photos and trophies, even articles of clothing that pertained to a car’s particular era,” she recalls. “For my family, there is real value in honoring history.” Kerrie, too, was intrinsically connected to the importance of the past. While completing her undergraduate studies at Michigan State University with a thesis in Historical Restoration, she earned a five-year internship with the State Capital. Under the tutelage of a state archivist, she went on to graduate school in Michigan to study interior design and architecture. Her artistic talents and design acumen provided an ideal platform upon which to launch her business, which focuses on renovating kitchens with an appreciation and awareness for a home’s history and its future. She takes her work to heart. “Sometimes I feel guilty removing an original kitchen,” she acknowledges. “But in designing a new space, I focus on marrying the homeowner’s style to the architecture of the home for a high-quality product that will stand the test of time.” Her vision: a kitchen that may be updated to individual tastes, but that will become an integral part of a home’s legacy.

“I want to give my clients a product that is aesthetically appealing and historically significant.” Kerrie Lehnert Kitchens by Kerrie 7522 South Tamiami Trail Sarasota, FL 34231 (941) 228.1173 KitchensbyKerrie@yahoo.com www.KerrieLehnert.com

She is intuitive, creative and sensitive to the subtleties of space and design, but Kerrie is also a keen businesswoman with an ability to hone in on each client’s distinct wants and needs. Her consultations are thorough; engaging her clients in thoughtful conversations, she identifies their long- and short-term goals and utilizes this information in the design process. She absorbs her surroundings, studying furniture and discussing everything from lifestyles to taste in design, which provides her with a deeper understanding of what a given space should offer. And she utilizes a highly personal approach to the design process. “I typically bring hand drawings to my clients,” says Kerrie. “While I’m able to utilize AutoCAD programs, I enjoy the freedom

16 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

to design without the standard parameters.” There is an artful grace in her work, a willingness to explore space beyond existing walls and fixtures. “When I draw walls from field measurements, my mind becomes open to a greater realm of design possibilities,” Kerrie reveals. “It’s like working on a puzzle, looking for new ways to put the pieces together.” As her collegial network has grown and evolved, so has her business. Kerrie’s emphasis is on creating beautiful and lasting cabinetry, which defines a kitchen’s space and atmosphere. She has launched a signature product line, Kerried Away, which features doors inspired by historical design eras. “The cabinets include my written perspective on why a style was popular,” she explains. “From Victorian colors to the simplicity of Eduardian design, to the implications of today’s Millenium style, I want to give my clients a product that is aesthetically appealing and historically significant.” Kitchens By Kerrie, which launched in 2006, has thrived thanks to Kerrie’s solid work ethic and her business savvy. Her professional team includes Project Manager Will Smith, a master cabinet maker who has been in the business since the age of 13. “It’s an honor to have such an exceptional group of skilled and talented individuals working with me,” she says. “Our clients are consistently thrilled with their results.” Her work has earned industry accolades as well. Named DiversityBusiness.com’s 320th Emerging Company in the United States, Kitchens By Kerrie has also been the recipient of the Small Business of the Year award by the Longboat, St. Armands and Lido Key Chamber of Commerce, and the Venice Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Month and Beautification awards. Kerrie looks forward to continued success and professional growth. She appreciates the opportunity to honor the past while celebrating the future, and to creating beautiful and unique kitchens for her thriving clientele.

REAL | beauty VINTAGE HAIR

By Sheila Venancia

“How many of these hair styles Photo: Model Yasmin Maia, Hair by Sheila Venancia

1920’s The 1920s was a decade defined by social and cultural rebellion. From the bootleggers who smuggled moonshine across state lines, to the women’s suffrage movement that helped to secure the right to vote. Some of us can only think and try to reflect of what things must have been like in the 1920’s. One of the most observable changes taking place in American society in the 20’s was the evolution of women’s hairstyles. Ladies were saying goodbye to their long Victorian locks and welcoming much shorter hairdos. The ladies of this era began wearing the lovely page boy look that curled gracefully under and gained influence for its femininity and loved by men the world over. From there, the styles evolved into pursuing a more plucky style and many women stormed the salons for the simple straight looking bob. However, the mass appeal of this trend wasn’t accepted by many salons, so barbers became the go-to for 1920’s hairdressing. Sheila Venancia International Hair Stylist (941) 822.2152 sheilasvs@hotmail.com Facebook - Sheila Venancia International Hair Stylist

After this daring era of women taking their dauntless stand of clipper cutting most of their hair off, they decided once again that they wanted to exhibit more softness in their hair and began growing their hair in willowy waves as stylists put their clippers on the shelf to gather dust. 1930’s In the beginning of the 1930’s women tired of fighting against their female forms and decided they no longer desired to look boyish. Around 1932 the styles began to soften a little bit more; as a play in the waves arrived and a little bit of volume appeared on the scene. Curls were becoming more popular as ladies would wrap small portions of their hair tightly around their finger and secure it with a pin. Some styles were parted in the middle and pulled back and up on the sides with a roll formed, while the back was rolled under or knit together in tight sausage cluster type curls. In the latter part of the 1930’s the hair was sometimes pulled back into one roll while the back was either turned up or under. Sometimes the addition of a braid would be worn to give the appearance of a lovely band dividing two sets of waves with the bunch of curls found on the bottom.

18 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

have you tried?” Another new trend began in the 1930’s, which continues to this day. When the ladies went to the salons they started to be serviced with “hair color” as Hollywood dared to once again set the trend. 1940’s When we take a look back at past red carpet seasons, no other decade has influenced celebrity hair and makeup quite like the 1940’s. Sexy vintage waves, bright red lips and long lashes were all the rage in Hollywood and soon caught on around America. The hair styles of the 1940’s consisted of a general shape: sculpted and voluminous waves offset by a side-part. Victory rolls were a trendy addition at the end of “the war to end all wars” that allowed women to pin up the front of their strands, show off their facial features and maintain length in the back. Everything from pipe cleaners to old pantyhose were used to create these 40’s hairdos. However, hot rollers have made it much easier to get vintage waves today. So, how many of these hair styles have you tried? None? Don’t worry, they may yet come back again.......with a modern twist of course!

REAL | perspectives INTERNATIONAL LANDLORDS – A RISING TREND By Patricia Tan

Florida’s still low real estate prices, together with a healthy demand for rental properties have led many investors from overseas to purchase rental properties here. Sometimes the homes are purely for investment, other times they are vacation homes that are rented while the owners are not using them personally. It can be difficult to find a property that meets both the need of a vacation home and a rental investment. The home that meets the owner’s need for a vacation residence may not produce the best rental returns, but a lower return is often acceptable under these circumstances. Here are some of the things buyers consider before deciding upon the kind of rental that will work best for them: •

Initial cost and capital outlay. A property that is rented for vacations must be fully furnished to a high standard, and this can add a substantial amount to the cost of the property itself.

Ongoing costs. The costs associated with running a short term rental can be considerable. The landlord is responsible for all utility bills, whereas the tenant in a long term rental would normally be responsible for these.

Property management. Successful management of a vacation rental property requires a lot of time and effort, and this is reflected in higher management fees.

Vacancy rate. This indicates how much of the time the home may be unoccupied. For a long term rental, this will normally be the time between annual leases, and in our current market conditions you can expect this to be about 30 days. For short term rentals, the vacancy rate will depend upon a number of factors such as supply and demand, and economic conditions that impact tourist traffic.

Some readers may have seen a recent article published in The Sarasota Herald Tribune that featured one of our British clients, Steve Kingshott, who is an international landlord. I first met Mr. Kingshott when he visited our booth at a U.K. property show a few years ago. He wanted to purchase a vacation home in Florida, and I convinced him to look at Sarasota in addition to other Florida Cost of advertising and finding tenants. For a long term cities he had in mind. He quickly decided that Sarasota offered rental, these costs are limited to the time between leases him the most desirable life style and purchased a downtown only. To secure vacation rentals, these costs are ongoing and condominium. Once he had spent some time here, he spotted an opportunity to invest in other real estate and become a landlord. can be significant. Quickly establishing that long term rentals offered a more attractive return, Mr. Kingshott purchased two other condominiums both of which are rented to tenants on a long term basis. or real estate professional Daniel Matusiak, the platform to success has been rooted in a strong work ethic and a relationshipdriven business. The Canadian native, bilingual in English and French, has plied his skills throughout the course of his thirty-year career. Driven to excel, he continues to pursue opportunities to assist his clients in realizing their objectives. Daniel launched his real estate business after establishing a successful outside sales career with IBM. His professional acumen had earned the trust and respect of a notable clientele; a national bank recognized his talents and asked him to join their group.

Under 30 at the time, Daniel found himself bucking the trend. “At the time it was rather uncommon for an inexperienced young agent to acquire the opportunity I did,” he recalls. He quickly proved his mettle, earning recognition as Listor of the Month just two months into his career. Daniel’s secret to success: “I worked from eight in the morning to eleven in the evening,” he says. His back-to-basics approach, paired with a penchant for continued education and professional creativity, has contributed to an accomplished and thriving book of business. “I have always considered real estate to be a true profession,” Daniel offers. “To earn a broker’s license in

Canada requires six hundred hours of college as well as four hundred hours of real estate courses. The training is significant; it’s a commitment.” Daniel’s dedication has differentiated him throughout the course of his career; he consistently seeks new methods of adding value to the client experience, and maintains a position at the forefront of emerging market trends and changes. “It’s easy to glean best practices from someone else’s business,” he acknowledges. “With the advent of technology, it has become increasingly more common to see agents tapping into what they see others doing.” But this tactic, he says, doesn’t address pressing issues. “I look

at a challenge and identify solutions,” Daniel states. “This has allowed me to assist my clients in achieving success despite unfavorable conditions.” Case in point: during the mid-1980s, when interest rates soared into double digits, sellers were dropping home prices in order to appease financiallystrapped buyers. Daniel’s alternative: “I began to research options,” he says. “By approaching banks directly, I discovered an opportunity to buy down interest rates at the closing table. This earned my sellers more money, while making it feasible for buyers to purchase homes.” If his knowledge allows him to successfully navigate the challenges of a transitioning market, it is Daniel’s concise communicative style that has facilitated solid collegial and client relationships. He doesn’t mince words; his candor reflects his belief in business conducted with integrity and honesty. “I don’t make promises I can’t fulfill,” Daniel states. “By being up front with my clients, I am better able to prepare them for the process at hand.” Thorough research and comprehensive information, he adds, keep his clients in the know and ready to make the right decisions for their particular needs.

related service professionals whose levels of customer care parallel his own. “I have established relationships with everyone from housecleaners to golf pros,” Daniel says. “Whether it’s a mechanical issue, lifestyle related, a legal matter, or pertains directly to real estate, chances are I have a connection that will benefit my client’s needs.” His concierge-style service includes transportation and the coordination of recreational amenities including golfing and boating. While Daniel’s local clients appreciate VIP-level care, his expanded network of buyers and sellers may garner even greater benefits from the value-added services he provides. “I have had the opportunity to align myself with successful brokers in Brazil, Switzerland, Germany, Asia and the Philippines,” he says. “My international clientele is supported

Daniel’s comprehensive care and astute representation have earned him a loyal clientele that includes high profile heads of business and professional athletes. Meeting the needs of demanding and discriminating individuals, he says, requires impeccable attention to detail. “I am constantly focused on providing a great experience for every client,” Daniel remarks. “This drives my business.” Daniel, who relocated to Sarasota in 1991, specializes in listings throughout the region. His areas of expertise include Casey Key, Sorrento Shores, Siesta Key, Bird Key, Lido Key, Longboat Key and Downtown Sarasota. He is expanding his knowledge and market share into waterfront properties in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties.

Client Michael Ferreira shares, “When my wife and I originally were looking for a home in Sarasota we met Daniel. The way he treated us in buying our home there was no doubt we would use him again. We’re looking to sell and buy again, and didn’t consider anyone else. We have a friend in the business and trust him one hundred percent.” “Detailed graphs and financial figures allow my clients to determine whether a sale makes sense. This information ensures that we are working on a shared goal, and establishes clear expectations for the outcome of a sale.” A strong advocate for accountability in business, Daniel notes that he strives for balance in his client relationships. “My goal is to consistently deliver an exceptional experience at every level,” he says. “The sale of a home involves a significant financial impact, but it is often an emotionally-charged time as well. I’m here to make it as easy and stress free as possible.”

by a comprehensive platform of services that is driven by technology and reinforced with one-on-one relationships,” he says. “This allows me to hone in on my clients’ needs, even when we are on separate continents.” Closer to home, Daniel has cultivated a collegial relationship with top producing agents at The Campins Company Luxury Real Estate, cofounded by TV personality and real estate professional Katrina Campins. Based in South Florida, the brokerage caters to the luxury and high end marketplace. “This is an excellent opportunity to expand my reach and better position my clients for success throughout the state,” says Daniel.

His entrepreneurial spirit continues to drive Daniel, who once owned two thriving offices with upwards of 150 agents. Today, as the Broker/Owner of Action Realty of Sarasota, he enjoys the opportunity to maintain professional balance. REAL | perspectives WHAT ARE DREAMSCAPES? By William Henry, PhD

“...My first emotional response was similar to the ‘Disney Feeling’...” Over the last 30 years or so I, like many Florida residents, enjoy taking my family to Disney World as well as other theme parks in Central Florida. I hope to take my grandchildren there someday. My favorite has always been the MGM theme park attraction at Disney World. I am also impressed with Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island. There seems to be an aura of “Magic” present as well as at the other Disney venues. Though my background entails practicing both as a designer and researcher, I had not bothered to tap the analytical side-- rather than the emotional response to these venues. In other words my attraction mirrored that of other visitors to these theme parks--- others who probably aren’t licensed architects and who have not earned doctorates. Then I happened to attend a lecture at the University of Central Florida presented to a trade association by a dynamic young man named Tony Peluso. I call him young, but Tony physically is probably in his mid-fifties. He is very young at heart. He described how the University of William “Bill” Henry RGA-Design LLC DreamScapes LLC (813) 226.2220 ext. 204 whenry@rga-design.com

Central Florida has created something called the ‘Knight’s Center’ at UCF. When I left the lecture hall and went outside to experience what he had described inside, my first emotional response was similar to the ‘Disney Feeling’ described above. This mixed use development at the center of UCF contains BOTH public institutional facilities and private restaurants, retail stores, and common amenities. It also contains on-going entertainment venues enjoyed by all. Nightly shows performed in the band shell as well as landscaped exteriors and specialty lighting enhances the setting. It seems like a stage set for continual entertainment; unlike the austere institutional feel which typifies most campuses in Florida. My plans were to exit the campus and head back home. But instead I did a 180 degree and went back to talk to Tony to see how the ‘Disney feel’ came to be at the heart of a public university. A few glasses of wine and lots of laughs later (with his cohort Mike West) and I think I have a theory about how they can create what Tony aptly described as ‘DreamScapes’. The two have combined to write and produce many of the Disney attractions e.g. MGM Disney, Indiana Jones, and most recently Harry Potter. These are just some examples where one or the other was involved in some

32 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

aspect of planning, design or operation. The simplest answer to the question about ---how they impart the “Disney Magic” to various projects is---- they tell ‘stories with design’. Tony and Mike do in depth research into the setting and the history of the people involved with the project. A compelling story often emerges. For instance with respect to the St. Petersburg waterfront it might be the story of Tony Jannus’ flight across Tampa Bay; or the story of Pan American World Airways based there; it could be the story of the founding of the Times and other interesting tidbits of history. Then they weave a story with a complete design of the environment and buildings utilizing a much expanded palette of landscaping, specialty lighting, music, colors, materials, art and signage. Each setting becomes a “chapter’ in the story they are weaving. Visitors are woven into their story and become immersed in it. Why am I telling you this story? Michael West, Tony Peluso and I have formed a company called ‘DreamScapes LLC’. After one month of operation something has resonated with clients. They get the idea. They want their projects to be DreamScapes too!! If you are interested in the services DreamScapes provides please visit our web site at www.dreamscapes.us.

The Van Wezel Foundation: Enriching Lives By Lalanena Gonzalez-Figueroa

There’s nothing quite like the look in a child’s face as she experiences a live theater show. The excitement, the sense of wonder and the innocent acceptance of the presentation contribute to the atmosphere of the auditorium, fueling actors with a palpable energy. Each year, the Van Wezel Foundation makes this happen for upwards of 25,000 children throughout the Gulf Coast region, sponsoring their attendance at delightful programs offered by the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. “For so many of our participants, this is their first experience with live theater,” reveals President and CEO Monica Van Buskirk. Established in 1987, the Van Wezel Foundation is an independent charitable non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that supports the Hall’s programs and educational outreach. The Foundation also provides funds dedicated to the Hall’s maintenance, upkeep and capital improvements. To date, millions of dollars have been directed to the Hall, and countless lives have been changed as a result. “One of our primary missions is our outreach to local youth,” remarks Monica. “The funds we raise make it possible for children from kindergarten through high school to attend our performances.” In addition to tickets and transportation to school time performances such as The Math Maniac Show, Stuart Little and Junie B. Jones, the Van Wezel Foundation also 34 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

supports students in their classrooms through interactive workshops with curriculum integration. There is even an audition workshop that encourages and empowers future performers. “At a time when budget cuts continue to impact the scope and quality of arts exposure for our youth, it is so wonderful to provide area children with the chance to experience live theater,” asserts Monica. “Study after study has shown a direct correlation between arts exposure and improved math and science scores; we take to heart the importance of giving young people the opportunity to thrive socially and academically.”

“One of our primary missions is our outreach to local youth...” Statistical data is reinforced by the heartwarming letters the Van Wezel Foundation receives from students and educators. “There is such a sense of gratitude for the experience,” Monica explains. “It’s wonderful to see the impact that we have had.” Students aren’t the only beneficiaries of The Van Wezel Foundation’s outreach efforts; the organization reports that it recently raised upwards of $25,000 to apply to military and senior access programs. “Veterans, active duty servicemen and women, and their families will have the ability to take advantage of free or reduced-cost performances, as will area seniors,” notes Monica.

The Van Wezel Foundation’s monetary contributions ensure that all Hall patrons enjoy their experience in a well-maintained environment. “As stewards of the Hall, we support the significant efforts of maintaining and beautifying the property,” says Monica. “From new carpets and updated bathrooms, to maintenance of the Hall’s ample grounds, we are proud to contribute to the atmosphere that makes the Hall such a wonderful place.”

“We are really excited about our future,” asserts Monica. “The Van Wezel Foundation is working closely with city officials to best meet the ongoing needs of the Hall and our community. We look forward to ongoing success, and to continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of others.”

With the tremendous support of local volunteers, donors and underwriters, The Van Wezel Foundation continues to thrive. “We are so fortunate to have a wonderful community that understands the importance of what we do, and that believes in the value of giving back,” Monica observes.” Opportunities abound for individuals and businesses to contribute time, talents and funds to the Foundation. “We are currently seeking volunteers to assist us with our ongoing initiatives and to be a part of our annual gala,” she continues. The gala, the Foundation’s signature event, promises to be a memorable one in 2014. “We are so thrilled to welcome Jay Leno, who will join us just days after his final Tonight Show broadcast. It’s always a great party, with cocktails, dinner and a rousing after party.” The fundraiser includes a silent auction and a raffle to win a new Lexus IS 250 F Sport. Throughout the year, The Van Wezel Foundation continues its fundraising efforts through special events including Friday Fest and Sunday brunches.
