is really a smaller world when you look at the example of people doing something about the inequities of life. When we at RG Magazine decided to do the Good Karma Edition, the moment an e-mail and text went out one of our featured designers quickly knew of a great person who was making a difference in the world. Well, we all make a difference, whether for good or bad, a difference is made in all of our choices. So when we heard about One Sandwich At A Time or OSAAT, RG asked one of its founders, Erin Dinan, if we can help to raise some money for them and to tell us a little bit about OSAAT. Erin said, “We are on a mission to encourage others to come out and make a difference and feed someone in need. We say that it’s as simple as that! We have fed nearly 25,000 individuals thus far and are working towards more. We live by the motto by Margaret Mead,
“N
ever doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens could change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that has.”
WHAT MADE YOU AND GEORGE FIRST THINK OF STARTING ONE SANDWICH?
I wanted to originally create a blog for my photography; one that would express a different side of art - a side of humanity and realness that I was feeling the art world was lacking. I wanted to express a true and honest story of those that are living day to day, unsure of where their next meal would come from.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MISCONCEPTIONS THAT PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT THE HOMELESS THAT ANNOY YOU: AND IF SOME ARE BASED IN FACT, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO MAKE OTHERS UNDERSTAND ABOUT SEEING THE HOMELESS THAT WAY?
Not everyone on the streets chooses this lifestyle. If you visit a shelter, you will meet doctors, lawyers, addicts, mentally ill individuals, those who are down on their luck, etc. What we misinterpret is that these individuals are just like you and me; they have just had different trials and tribulations in their lives.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR ONE SANDWICH AND HOW CAN OTHERS GET INVOLVED OR BEGIN ONE ( FEED THE HOMELESS) IN THEIR OWN AREA?
OSAAT is on a mission to raise homeless awareness and eventually to combat hunger in NYC and beyond. We have enough resources in this country to end hunger. We just need to use them. Our goal is to encourage an environment for volunteers to come out, give back, and see firsthand where their efforts are going to matter. FASHIONISTA AND PUBLISHED WRITER EPIPHANY KENDELL IS TAKING THE INDUSTRY BY STORM, EMPOWERING FEMALES EVERY WHERE TO RAISE THEIR VOICE
E
piphany’s love for fashion started at a very young age, she often would shop for hours in and out of various thrift and boutiques stores. As Epiphany grew up in age, the passion for fashion followed her and this young mogul acquired gigs everywhere from visual merchandising, to interning with popular brands such as AKOO and pulling looks for various online publications. Through it all Epiphany still took time to engage in community events, from speaking at career day, mentoring, collecting prom dresses for underprivileged high school students and more. Growing up in Astoria Housing Projects Epiphany observed so many troubled young females and felt her efforts to encourage those around her was not enough. Seeing young girls who did not have self-esteem, and dated all the wrong men bothered her. At that moment she decided to compose a book, titled *Hood Girls Do It Better: “The Hood Girls A-Z Guide ToSuccess”; The book serves as a memoir and guide for young women going through situations similar to the ones she has experienced.
Since #HGDIB has become a movement that represents confidence and provides the strength needed to combat stereotypes. RGM © 10

FROM FASHION, TO WRITING, YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED A LOT FOR YOUR YOUNG AGE. IN YOUR EYES, WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISH SO FAR?
My biggest accomplishment is fixing my attitude. I had a short temper and attitude problem for a while and I learned through trial and error that I catch more bees with honey. The right attitude can change your whole life and prospective.

When I looked around and saw that the young women around me were being rebellious and making mistakes that I made and some I didn’t, I was like no. We can’t lose our girls. I’ve always been the big sister type to my friends and family with me being the only child and all. But I just knew that I had to try and do something to help even if I can’t help everybody. I know that as young women (no matter how cool our mothers are) we don’t really want to talk to them about things, so we hold on to stuff and figure things out on our own, the extra hard way, when we could’ve gotten a bit of lead way by talking to someone whose been there and done that. So that’s who I decided to become, the big sister young women can talk to and get advice from, someone they can relate to and who can relate to them.
BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN THE INDUSTRY:
I’m not really sure, I don’t quite look at it as struggling; I look at it as: this is what I want and will get no matter what, so if anything it’s a me struggle, struggling with accomplishing my goals on time, or struggling with what I want to write about next. I never really worry about things outside of what I’m doing and myself. For example if I was a singer and people say it’s hard to get in the industry. Everyone is a singer. I wouldn’t pay that any mind because its not about that, it’s about me feeling fulfilled!
TIPS FOR GIRLS TRYING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS:
Seek guidance from those who are older and wiser in all aspects. Try to learn something from everyone (and their experience) you come in contact with, whether negative or positive. Jewels get dropped from all situations and people.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN MODELING?
My reason to begin modeling, is a little crazy, I want to redefine beauty. Growing up, I was picked on for my red hair, freckles and pale skin. Despite the past, I know I am beautiful, and maybe I don’t need to prove it to myself, but I want to be a symbol of self-love for other girls dealing with bullies or low self-esteem. Beauty is not confined to the blonde and blue mold society sells us. Beauty is more than just looks; beauty should be smart, generous, and kind too.
WHAT IS THE CRAZIEST MODELING EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE HAD SO FAR?
The craziest, and most fun, modeling experience was the first time I was ever in front of the camera; I was doing a shoot for RG actually. The crazy part was not being in front of the camera, I had fun with that. What was crazy is the group of guys near us had a miniature plane that we ended up incorporating in to the photo shoot! I went in to the shoot with no expectations, and ended up having the time of my life, literally flying!
COOLEST ASSIGNMENT?
The coolest assignment I have done was a hair show for Oribe. I loved having so many of my friends with me. They dressed us up as aliens, with out of this world hair, and we walked down a cosmic runway!
BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN THE INDUSTRY?
Ironically, compared to the reason I started modeling in the first place, insecurity is the biggest challenge for me in the industry. Insecurity can build up from constantly being judged by my height, weight, skin, eye color and over all appearance. For example, I am incredibly self-conscious about my waist being 27 inches instead of 24.

WINGS OF GRACE?
Wings of Grace is a nonprofit I founded to put my passion of empowering people in to action. Wings of Grace has a simple mission: to empower and motivate people who need it most, especially survivors of sex trafficking. When I was a teen, my life went down the path of no return. However, I was empowered by a college education that a school offered to me, if I turn my life around. Making that choice was the best decision of my life, and I want to give that same opportunity to other people. I believe in education, and I have faith in humanity. Wings of Grace has several projects in the works right now. The Empowerment project opens “micro-campuses” at existing rehabilitation centers and shelters. We offer a basic curriculum for typing, oratory and leadership skills. Our staff works directly with students to support their visions of a better future and do what it takes to reach their goals.

his issue might not have been our famous “Fashion Issue”, but the artists, models, stylists and designers that were featured in our “The Queen’s City” photo shoot sure did not get the memo; they brought fashion, style and edge to life through their designs, poses and art. One of the key members of the photo shoot was Oseas Villatoro, a local San Diego fashion designer who we fell in love with during Fashion Week San Diego’s Spring Showcase at Harrah’s Southern California Resort. From the minute we took a glance at his collection, we knew we needed to work with him and know all about him. And after having the opportunity to meet with him multiple times, we can honestly say we are more than impressed by his work ethic and passion for the industry. Your line is extremely impressive for someone who is not an established designer yet. What was your thought process behind your past collections? Where do you draw inspiration? Every single one of my past collections have a one inspiration could be from the sky, a color, past moments in life happy and sad I try to let my design make the talking.
Who is your ideal consumer? What does the “Oseas Fashion” woman look like? My ideal consumer will be a chic hard working women age 21-40 that goes from work mood to going out from one second to the next a strong woman with a lot of success.
Where do you see your line going 5 years from now?
In 5 years from now I see myself opening a few stores around San Diego, Los Angeles, and hopefully New York.
What is your favorite trend at the moment? My favorite trend has to be chic, edgy, elegance.
Best fashion advice?
Surround yourself with positive people that are going to motivate you to be better.

e’ve all dreamed this at one point or another. To dress beautifully, dine, blog and have millions of followers. Many artists think that blogging and becoming a social influencer is something that just happens overnight, and can be done on the side. Sound easy enough. Right? What many do not realize is that becoming popular on the Internet is not an easy gig; it requires dedication, hard work and most importantly passion. A couple of weeks back we caught up with sisters Amra Beganovich and Elma Beganovich, two of the top fashion bloggers in New York and got their take on what it takes to become popular online, and really what it is like to be ‘fashion girls’ in the city. XX1. What led you to drop your successful careers in hopes of becoming a fashion empire? And what is your ultimate goal? I remember vividly that I was told once by a senior member of a government organization that the only way to advance was to wait my turn by working many years until I reach the “seniority level. ” I felt trapped and unhappy; there was no opportunity to be creative and/or build my dreams. I started a blog as a creative outlet, and I didn’t know what it would turn into. Two and a half years later, and we are reaching our 1.7+ million social media followers and almost half a million monthly blog readers. It took a lot of work to get here but it was worth the effort. My goal all along was to share things I felt others would find beneficial or inspiring. We are all looking for inspiration for our travels, meals, food and lifestyle; I am just happy to be able to share things I find helpful in my daily life and humbled that this also resonates with others. My ultimate goal is to build tools others can use to make their lives easier, happier, better. For example, we developed a blogging platform, Club Fashionista that other creative individuals can use to connect/bid on projects from brands who are looking for talent. I find that many large companies may not have any problem hiring the best photographers, stylists, influencers, etc. to help them build their business; however, small brands deserve equal opportunity to work with other talented industry insiders. It is basically a win-win situation for the brands and industry talent. This is my passion and my goal – solving everyday problems in a creative way and bettering others along the way.

XX2. What are your fashion predictions for 2016? Over the knee boots are huge this season, and I believe this trend will be here to stay in 2016 as well. The new boot models are more comfortable and more wearable; with a mid sized heel, they can be combined with everything from jeans to dresses. I wear mine on the weekends with a pair of jeans and a leather jacket, or on weekdays to a meeting with a skirt and a blouse. Also, I am seeing a trend of mirrored sunglasses, and I believe that it will carry into 2016. Sunglasses are the easiest accessories to wear when you instantly want to make any outfit more trendy/chic.
XX3. Wearing running shoes with dresses: so chic, or so lame? So lame— I often find that some women (and men) will find any excuse to justify their lazy approach to dressing. There are so many variety of shoes that are incredibly comfortable and amazingly chic. Oxfords now come in great styles for both women and men; I particularly like pointy flats, or small-heeled booties. Also, loafers are great when worn with ankle pants and crisp shirts. Basically, running shoes should be left for running.

XX4. The world is your catwalk: what are your top picks for brunch, dessert and coffee from the places you have visited? There are so many as we travel quite often. However, I will try and list some of our favorite places in cities that we visit quite often (and in NYC, where we live): LA: Sugarfish in Beverly Hills is hands down the best sushi I have ever had. Kreation Juice is my favorite take away place for an amazing smoothie/juice before or after a workout. NYC: Ristorante at the Lincoln Center is a great Italian restaurant that we often visit; basically, you cannot go wrong with whatever you order there. I love Via Quadronno for cappuccino and Tiramisu in the Upper East Side. Also, I love Red Rooster for the most authentic atmosphere and amazing food. PARIS: Cafe Marly for great food, view and coffee. Bread and Roses has the most amazing beef tar-tar and one of the best ice teas/lemonades I have ever had! LONDON: I love Richoux in Mayfair for breakfast, Chesterfield Hotel for afternoon tea, and Burger and Lobster in Mayfair for delicious dinner. MILAN: My perfect evening would consist of dinner in Ristorante Piazza Repubblica and gelato anywhere close to Duomo so that I can admire the architecture. WASHINGTON D.C.: Leopold’s Kafe for a great cup of coffee, brunch and/or lite lunch. Estadio for delicious Tapas dinner and sangrias.

XX5. Do you believe in sacrificing comfort to “nail” a look? I believe in dressing the way you feel but always utilizing timeless pieces to look great. Even on days when you don’t feel like spending much time, you can use a simple oversized white button down, jeans, a leather jacket, and a loafer or flat boots to look stylish. Add a vintage scarf, a bucket bag, and a pair of aviators or mirrored sunnies, and you will look perfectly polished for a day around town. If you have a cocktail party, or another evening event, LBD is always a great choice. I also love utilizing long LBDs for meetings, and just throwing over a great jacket, scarf, and a pair of stilettos. Also, I do a fish braid when I have about 5 minutes to style my hair and have received great compliments for it. Red lipstick or at least some nude lip-gloss looks great when you have minutes to do your makeup.
XX6. Do you have any pointers for girls trying to follow your footsteps? My best advice is to be original; there is an army of bloggers photographing same things, traveling to the same places, and wearing the same clothes. This is not interesting for anyone; how many times have you seen shoes photographed with floors with a comment “I have this thing with floors?” Every time I see this image, it makes me cringe. Originality is rewarded, and you will never stand out or be memorable when doing something as a 1,000 other people have. Instead, be daring and introduce a new spin on photography, content, and other media. I find that there is nothing more refreshing than seeing something done in a different way; this is a sure way to help you build a following.
XX7. How do you feel about the Kardashians… fashion-wise? “In a world of Kardashians, be Diana!” {Laughing.} Personally, I am not a great fan of their fashion; however, I must say that I respect them as businesswomen. I feel like many women aim for “supporting roles,” and never considered being the “main role.” I respect that Kardashians took initiative to create a brand and stood their ground even when many questioned their positioning in the entertainment industry.

8. How do you feel about the “Girl Power” campaigns that have taken over the Internet? Do you feel that women are respected as much as men? I feel blessed to be living in a time when women have the opportunity to be in control of their destinies. We are now seeing this emergence of #GirlGoss, and I couldn’t be happier that there has been a shift in the mentality of young women. I don’t believe that women are respected as much as men in many industries; however, I personally know many women who are working to change this. Everyday I meet incredibly successful women, who are running their own fashion brands. I am seeing that many of them are better entrepreneurs than many of the men in the industry. RGM © 47
XX9. What is the most awkward date you have been on? Well, there has been many (laughing). One guy took me out to a restaurant on a campus university, and before I had a chance to speak, he opened a menu and shouted, “WHOA, this is expensive!” I ordered only an iced tea and excused myself to leave early and have a meal with my friends. Another time, it involved a guy, who told me he loved me after 2-3 dates; I was shocked and uncertain whether I did something wrong or he was in no way able to behave in a socially acceptable manner. The third craziest story would involve a guy, who talked all evening about how much he sold his company for; I felt so uncomfortable as he rambled on about his “greatness” that I had a few sangrias and quickly stumbled into a taxi.
XX10. Ladurée, Alice’s teacup or the Russian tearoom? None—afternoon tea at the Plaza hotel is amazing. For just a tea, coffee, or a drink at the Mark Hotel is a perfect choice for those looking to take a break from cultural activities in the MET or the Mandarin Oriental when you want to enjoy a quiet moment with an amazing view.
XX11. Biggest Beauty Tip/Secret? Drink as many freshly squeezed juices and smoothies for all of their nutrients and anti-oxidants. You will see increased luminosity/radiance in matter of days. Sleep at least 8 hours a day; when you can, take a small nap – it will refresh your skin in a way that
no moisturizing cream ever can. Always apply sunscreen and moisturizers, and use face-moisturizing masks with organic ingredients when doing chores around the house or just relaxing and watching movies.
XX12. If you could change one thing about this industry, what would it be? I would love to see more everyday girls on catwalks; I feel that the frail look the industry has been promoting for many years now does not empower women. Many of my model friends have complained how the industry favors overtly slender girls; basically feminine features like breasts and hips are not always welcome (ironically, in an industry made for women).
XX13. If you could live inside any fashion boutique in NYC, where would you reside? Barneys.
XX14. Are you closet “Chuck Bass” fans? Yes—and I feel like I have “come out of the closet” a long time ago {laughing}. Chuck Bass is one of my favorite fictional characters! s travel season is upon us, it’s time to start getting things organized. As each glittering city in Europe opens up a whole new world of possibilities, it’s important to know what to expect and to plan ahead. First things first, travel essentials. What will your necessary items be? Look no further, this style guide is sure to have you covered on what to wear in Europe.
ON TRAVEL NECESSITIES First and foremost, wherever you’re headed, bring proper luggage. Keep in mind how much you’re going to take with you as well as bring back home. Make sure to go over your essentials in your head before you head to the airport. Suggestions: A good book for the plane, a map to guide you through, a camera to capture all of the amazing moments abroad, and a journal to document your story of the day. ou meet someone for the first time, just their presence gives you butterflies, so you think, this must be love. It’s got to be something. You don’t get this feeling from everyone you meet. You have that first date that goes incredible, you once again think, this must be love, how wonderful your date went.
NOW IT’S TIME TO HAVE SEX, UNLESS YOU DID, BIG MISTAKE! But that’s another article. The sex is like fireworks; let me say it one more time. You think this must be love. It might be, I mean all these things are a plus, but what is love? Why do we so desperately want to be in love? Especially when we have had our hearts broken countless times? Is it that we are a glutton for punishment, or could it be that falling in love, or being in love while it does last, feels absolutely amazing! As children we are programmed for the fairy tale ending, but at what point do we lose what is real love and just want the happy ending and sometimes even just settle. Real love is a base of compatibility, chemistry and communication RGM © 52
but most of all respecting the person for who they are. I have worked in the fitness field for many years and I hear the women, as well as the men talk about love, and from what I see the two genders are not communicating, they are guessing. The result from guessing is a lot of broken hearts, and no happy endings. When we watch movies, we always hear that music that intensifies leading up to that big kiss scene. So are we waiting to hear that loud music go off in our heads, and when we don’t hear it, we think something must be wrong.
MAYBE THIS IS NOT LOVE?
In life when we want a person we chase after them; naturally they run the other way, as if we were five years old playing tag. So maybe it’s time to put away all those fairy tale books that were read to us. Put aside all those games we played as a child, and realize that we are all grown up, and there are new rules. No more games! Women, after watching a romantic flick with the big love scene, remember that’s not reality. And men, all those women you see in magazines and
movies that you think are so hot, news flash, not real. Air brush and a good makeup artist can do wonders. It’s healthy to fantasize what you want. But when it comes to the reality of a relationship, it’s simple. Finding someone you might like is fairly easy. Finding the person to be with for the rest of your life is work. So, if you do find that person that is right for you, don’t think there are trumpets or bells waiting to go off.
LOVE IS WORK,
and you get what you put into it. If you are willing to give it your all, not for a day, month or even a year, but for the rest of your life, then that is love. And stop thinking there is something else out there, at some point you need to realize that you have to do the work but it’s worth it. What you get is that person that has your back that will always be there for you and that’s a great feeling. Even better than the story that ends with the couple riding off in a pumpkin! Cause let’s face it that is not reality.

How often do we hear a friend or a co-worker mention that they or a loved one are sick or have a death in the family and say, “I’m so sorry to hear that. Let me know if I can help.” Well of course it is an uncomfortable, awkward moment and something needs to be said, Right? Not really, often it may be wiser to be more specific or say, “I’m sorry to hear that,” and leave it at that unless you truly can help. Now we also have all the people we have “Friended” on social media and hear constant troubles others have or perhaps we post our own woes as well. So is it really feasible that one can offer help to every one of these people? Maybe so, if it is just a card, prayer or well intentions said but if you offer help it may be best to be specific, like with what you are willing to do. For instance, I can bring food to you or is there a charity I can donate to in your family’s name? Perhaps it is someone close enough to offer a shoulder to cry on or run some errands for like food shopping or a ride to visit a sick family member. In any case, think a moment before offering help, as most of us are fortunate if we have the time to help our own family, let alone be there to help others. If you are specific, it is also a great relief to the friend or co-worker if they really were to ask. Now they know exactly what you can or cannot do. Yes, most of the time we say and mean it at that moment but when the time comes to really carry out that good deed we find our arms are full and are barely able to help ourselves. It is an unfortunate part of modern life, that in a world where we can talk to someone around the world and exchange stories and pictures like never before, we probably don’t even know what our next door neighbors are going through! So while in no way would we want to rain on your parade of good intentions to be a great person, be willing to recognize what you are able to do and what you are willing to do and for whom. No one will hate you for what you cannot do, but to offer something you don’t have is worse than not to say a thing at all! Next time you hear yourself saying, “Anything I can do to help?”

rom a young boy admiring such actors like Mike Hammer and Humphrey Bogart solve complicated crimes Vinny knew what he wanted to be. Besides the TV legends he had an innate ability to solve puzzles and other uncanny situations. He did not have any formal training in the profession that he would soon pursue. Vinny owes his knowledge to his upbringing on the rough and tumble street of the Little Italy section of the Bronx. He has grown his business into an efficient running machine over the past thirty years. His strict code of work ethic is what earned him the PI that everyone goes to for results. The company’s 99% success rate is testament to his popularity among the general public. Vinny’s credits as a State Investigator, Certified Forensic Examiner and Fraud Examiner have earned him the respect he has gained in the industry. It could be noted that his accomplishments are possibly due to the fact that his family works along his side. His daughter, Danielle, and two sons, Vinny Jr. and Anthony, are on hand to offer their talents. Vinny took his PI knowledge to the public when he began teaching a class called “How to get anything on Anyone and be your own Detective”. This opened a new door for Vinny when he was approached by Citadel Publishing to write about his profession. He went ahead and put out two interesting books entitled, ”How to Get Anything on anyone by searching Public records” and “How to Catch Him with His Pants Down and Kick him in his Assets”. In the years that Vinny has been in the business there have been some odd and some difficult cases. As he explained to RG;
“
Every once in a while we get a case that is difficult. For example, Victor Perez was sentenced to twenty years under the Rockefeller law for drug conspiracy. I took the case on as a favor to another

client who paid me for Victor because he felt he was wrongly convicted. I located the complainant and only witness who said he shot him in the leg in a drive by shooting because he and his friend were informants. After three years he came out of hiding and I located him at his Aunt’s house in Harlem. I showed him a photo array, which the cops did not show him or a lineup and he could not identify the person. He then admitted that the Detective on the case told him in court that Victor Perez was the guy that shot him. After he admitted this in writing and on audio tape and on video tape (which was filmed for Japanese V) the judge would not release him and he did 17 years of his sentence.

Vinny has had the pleasure of being in the spotlight a few times during his career. From the Carolyn Warmus murder case to the alleged sex ring of Anna Gristina he has always been drawn to the cameras sometimes not by his own will. But he has also been on popular talk shows and TV programs across the country. He has discussed his profession with hosts like Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Kimmel. “Being in the spotlight has been very good for me. Many people hire me because of that. They have issues with a business partner and my being on the case might make a difference. Some clients, such as criminal lawyers don’t like it when the investigator is in the spotlight. I really enjoy going on these various shows talking about various cases. I get to use my experience and ingenuity to help formulate theories about how the cases evolved, especially with missing
persons. I usually go on the Jane Velez Mitchell show on HLN (CNN).” Currently, he has begun filming an HBO pilot where he is a principal on the show with some very well-known actors. In the early 2000’s Vinny caught the acting bug and soon put his PI skills to work as an actor. He is better known for his work on Mackenzie Brown (2008), Parco P.I. March of 2014 has seen the spawn of the Foo Fighters and Chevy Metal and it is known as The Birds of Satan! Foo Fighter’s drummer Taylor Hawkins has combined forces with Chevy Metal’s Wiley Hodgden and Mick Murphy to form what is being called an “American Progressive Rock Super Group.” This trio has assembled and already released a seven track self-titled disc that pays homage to a slew of 70’s groups like Queen, David Bowie, Aerosmith and more. Even fellow Foo Fighters Dave Grohl, Rami Jaffee and Pat Smear are all featured on the disc as well. TRACK 1, “THE BALLAD OF THE BIRDS OF SATAN” sets the tone right out of the shoot with what can only be classified as their “opus;” a nine minute and twenty eight second roller coaster ride that has more twists, turns, stops, starts and timing changes than a steep mountain road.
The disc’s current single and TRACK 2 “THANKS FOR THE LINE,” is a syncopated, upbeat rocker with a Queen-like mid-section and bridge that gives way to the choppy, yet driving rhythm that makes this tune go. The THIRD TRACK, “PIECES OF THE PUZZLE,” much like the entire album, features great drum and guitar work. This tune definitely has punk overtones and a definitively progressive sound; yet is packaged in a neat pop style that resonates well as the band flows from one style to the next flawlessly. “RASPBERRIES” IS NEXT IN THE FOUR SLOT, which is shocking, as just when you think the boys are going to slow things down a bit with this offering; they kick it up a notch and it’s off to the races. This is perhaps the straightest forward cut on the record when it comes to just pure drive. Noticeably absent are the multiple changes that are present throughout the majority of this disc. TRACK 5, “NOTHING AT ALL,” combines acoustic and electric guitar with some very poignant style changes and dominant drum parts; making this a great toe tapper or head banger whichever you prefer to do. TRACK 6, “WAIT TIL TOMORROW” is once again full of timing changes over a fast punk beat and just flat out rocks from start to finish. With lyrics like, “Why can’t it wait til tomorrow, one
more bad mistake is all I want...” the band gets your attention and holds it; don’t blink, you may miss something. Finishing up this initial compilation of great talents and styles is the SEVENTH AND FINAL TRACK, “TOO FAR GONE TO SEE.” Like the opening cut which starts off with drums, this obviously slower piece with techno sound effects ends the same way; with Hawkins closing the door after another great riff laden passage.

Overall, it is amazing how these guys and this disc have flown under the radar a bit. Rife with superior musicianship, talent and song writing; this is one of the better debut efforts produced in a very long time. Murphy’s guitar work simply sizzles throughout, Hodgden’s bass and at times haunting vocals force you to pay attention and Hawkins’ drum work proves that he fits easily into the upper echelon of his ilk.

BILLY JOEL: HE’S STILL ROCK N’ ROLL TO ME

continues to be a banner year for legendary recording artist Billy Joel, who began “an open-ended run of once-a-month residency shows at Madison Square Garden, in New York City,” on January 27th, of this year, according to his official website. His sold-out concerts at “the world’s most famous arena” are in such demand that he will continue to play there, as long as the people want it. One month earlier, in December, 2013, Joel was bestowed the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors Award, by President Barack Obama, for his outstanding, musical achievements in the performing arts. In 1987, Joel travelled to the Soviet Union, along with his then-wife, and supermodel, Christie Brinkley, their daughter, Alexa Ray, and his backing band, where the singer performed in Moscow and Leningrad. A monumental, cultural exchange between the United States and Russia, these “ground-breaking” concerts heralded the arrival of the “first, fully staged Rock N’ Roll show in the USSR.” The event was filmed
and released as a feature-length documentary; “BILLY JOEL: A MATTER OF TRUST-THE BRIDGE TO RUSSIA” aired January 31, 2014, on Showtime, and will be available on DVD, for the first time, on May 20, 2014. 2014 commemorates the 50th anniversary of Joel’s tenure as a professional entertainer in the music industry. The superstar has sold over 160 million albums worldwide, with more than 16 platinum records to his name. From his early days in Long Island, N.Y., as a member of The Hassles and the heavy-metal duo Attila, to selling out stadiums around the globe, the singer shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

SCREENWRITER/DIRECTOR JEFF BAENA EXPLAINS HIS CREATIVE PROCESS By Rachel Sokol

ife After Beth made the festival rounds this year—including Sundance, where it debuted—and opened at New Yorkarea theatres on August 15th. From writer/ director Jeff Baena, the Life After Beth’s all-star cast includes Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Cheryl Hines, Paul Reiser, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Anna Kendrick. Here’s the synopsis: Zach (DeHaan) is devastated by the death of his girlfriend, Beth (Plaza). BUT WHEN SHE MIRACULOUSLY COMES BACK TO LIFE, HE’S THRILLED, YET TOTALLY CONFUSED. (Zach notices she’s ‘back’ when he sees Beth through the windows of her suburban home.) However, the newly-returned Beth isn’t exactly how Zach remembered her In fact, she’s become a zombie. No, really. And that’s when Zach’s life really takes an unexpected turn... A fan on YouTube called Life After Beth a “zombie-rom”. However, the movie’s writer/ director Jeff Baena, wants moviegoers to get less caught up in genres and labels, and watch the movie with no pre-conceived notions. “I don’t know where the zombie idea came from,” says Baena, who first wrote Life After Beth in 2003. “I was reading a lot of Jacques Derrida at the time. He analyzes zombies in his idea on how language is flawed, so maybe that had some influence. I envisioned the scene where Zach sees (‘new’) Beth through the window and was drawn to that moment and the script grew from that.” Back in 2003, actor/writer Joseph Gordon-Levitt was interested in a feature role at the time. Baena explains that once he completed the script, nothing really came from it immediately and so he moved on to other projects. Years later, actress Aubrey Plaza’s agent brought the script up to her as a

possibility. “And that’s when the film re-entered my consciousness, and I realized Aubrey would be perfect for the role of Beth,” says Baena. Dane DeHaan signed on to play Beth’s love interest, Zach. “I MET DANE [DEHAAN] AT A POKER GAME AT MY HOUSE,” recalls Baena. “I’m in awe of his talent as a dramatic actor and I knew I
needed someone who had more dramatic and comedic chops to ground the film and make it more emotionally believable. Luckily, he came on board.” Baena co-wrote the 2004 cult classic indie flick I Heart Huckabees with David O. Russell. He prefers writing after midnight, at
home, when there are not many distractions and “no noise, no light, no people. You’re able to focus. I wrote Life After Beth in a matter of weeks, but not every script is like that.” His advice for overcoming writer’s block is to just write down anything. “I never have writer’s block, but sometimes when I struggle with a scene I just write it out and don’t worry about the quality of it. I come back to it later instead of getting hung up on that one part. Some people get so hung up on making sure that one scene is perfect as they move along—and can’t move along until it’s perfect, they lose sight of their goal. But you can always come back to that scene and edit.” Baena enjoys both writing solo, as he did with Life After Beth, and co-writing, as he did with I Heart Huckabees. “I like bouncing ideas off other people. When working with someone else, provided there’s a common goal and not a lot of ego involved, there’s a freeflow of information and a beautiful synergy can be created.” “WRITING BY YOURSELF ALLOWS YOU TO EXPLORE THINGS WITHOUT HAVING TO ARTICULATE THEM; you can explore and not have to feel like it’s fully formed yet. It can form while you’re working on it. With someone else, you have to communicate what you’re going for and make sure you’re on the same page, literally, in order to make it work,” he says. “SOMETIMES IT’S REFRESHING TO WORK WITH SOMEONE ELSE, AND SOMETIMES IT’S EXHILARATING TO WORK ON YOUR OWN. IT DEPENDS ON THE PROJECT. IF YOU FIND THE RIGHT PERSON TO WORK WITH, IT CAN BE MAGICAL; WRONG PERSON IT CAN BE A NIGHTMARE. IT CUTS BOTH WAYS”.

AN ACTOR PUNCHING HIS WAY TO SUCCESS

Who is Gerard Cordero?
G
erard Cordero is what you would call a “man of many trades” who has managed to bridge the gap between acting and martial arts. At twelve years old the “acting bug” took root and his love for entertainment was sealed as he watched his idols like Sylvester Stallone, Patrick Swayze, Eddie Murphy and Tom Cruise act on the big screen. Gerard has studied various martial arts styles for the past twenty years off and on. Shotokan being his first, and then going onto other styles like Goju-Ryu, Taekwondo, American Kick-Boxing, Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu. In addition to studying in all these styles of martial arts, Gerard was also a very well rounded competitive Greco-Roman wrestler as well as a gymnast. He was “baptized” in the industry in 1998 on the TV mini series “Witness to The Mob” that featured heavy-weights like Vincent Pastore and Tom Sizemore among many other well known actors. This experience set the tone for Gerard’s future projects to come.

It was very overwhelming. You throw in talented actors like Tom Sizemore, Vincent Pastore, with a list of other known talent, I didn’t know what to expect. All and all the experience was great, I was fortunate enough to mingle amongst the stars and talk with them, which is rare most of the time for beginners.
”
Further down the road, he had the opportunity to work with Coco, who is married to SVU actor IceT. Gerard happened to be an actor that was chosen to show Coco the different techniques to use in developing your character and setting during an acting workshop. This enabled him to have a miniappearance on her show. Gerard has worked on TV and film projects throughout the years and has found both to be very challenging, all depending on the director. He said, in his eyes, he believes each director will always test their actors differently to get the best quality performance.
Gerard has played many different roles, from a concerned father to a ruthless mob boss. Because of his look and martial arts training he has landed roles that tend to be the “tough guy.” Like many other actors with the same credentials they tend to be type-cast. But Gerard does not think it is necessarily a bad thing, yet he has managed to play outside of his stereotypical role showing that he has great range and depth as an actor. From his appearance on “Law & Order” in 1998 to his role on the TV series “Deadly Sins” in 2014 Gerard has proven to be in demand. Yet Gerard is best known for his work on “Dark Shield” (2013) and “Freeze” (2014). Currently, the film “Freeze” is in post-production which is a fan based film on the Dark Knight - Batman and Mr. Freeze. He plays one of Joker’s menacing henchmen who end’s up crossing paths with Batman. Another two projects in the mix are “The Life” and “Vesuvius.” In the series, “The Life” he plays Detective Ben Pitre who is motivated to change the landscape of which he patrols day and night. The other project which is a short action Sci Fi aimed for the festivals in 2015; Gerard takes on the role of futuristic elite soldier, Manny Delano. He managed to ace both of these roles without losing a beat.

Along with the projects mentioned for 2014, Gerard is part of a feature film that is in pre-production called “Memoirs of the Streets of NY,” created by Joe Gawalis. This film is set around a big bank heist; Gerard plays Sammy Prato, a conflicted individual that is torn between two different worlds. In addition to all these upcoming projects, he recently completed a short action film called “Nostrae Realitate” which won Best Action Short at the Urban Action Showcase held in New York City at HBO Headquarters. For this film, Gerard won Best Action Actor for his performance and among the celebrity judges was well known martial artists/actors Michael Jai White and Kelly Hu. One project that can launch Gerard Cordero’s career to the next level is an upcoming TV Series due to be out in late 2014, early 2015 that is said to be a blend of “The Sopranos” and “The Wire.” Created by Taheim Bryan, “South Side” original series is based out of South Jamaica, Queens, which in the 80’s was considered an extremely volatile area. This TV Series offers a host of notable actors like Ice T, Method Man, Treach, Mike Epps, Kymani Marley and many more. Gerard again picks up an impacting role of a Detective named Jerry Rothman aka ‘Big Bird’ whose main purpose is to use everyone in his world to accomplish a specific goal: bringing down the bad guys. An additional career launcher for Gerard is another new TV Series created by Redfield Thomas to be out in late 2014, early 2015 called “Organized Crimes,” which evolves around

Growing up and dealing with consistent bullying and then being told my body type just isn’t what would be successful made me determined to prove them wrong. Now, I also have women and men call me their motivation, which actually motivates me. I’m just your average girl chasing dreams; it’s humbling to know people consider my dream-chasing “motivating.” It’s definitely special.

You’re damned if you do & you’re damned if you don’t. I’ve gotten more into being healthy and gym going and now I’m “getting too skinny.” Honestly, I’m not here to please people. It’s not about dealing with negative people, it’s about appreciating the people who support you & surround you with positive energy.

MEET PIGGY PILLOWS
M
follow in the footsteps of other successful brands but I don’t want to copy them. I want to be something different. While I haven’t exactly figured that out yet, I’ve decided to let the consumer guide me and Piggy Pillows in the direction best suited.
The idea for Piggy Pillows came to Michelle Ojea after following a pedicure.
Fashion trend of 2014? I’m seeing a lot of baggy trousers, distressed denim, colorful suede, nautical nudes and color blocked sheath dresses, and faux leather, “pleather” if you will. Personally, I think the sheath dresses will be big.
any of us spend hours shifting between designer and department stores on the lookout for one-of-a-kind signature stilettos and shoes; We try on the shoes, fall in love, take them home, wear them the next day and realize that the shoes do not quite fit or feel the way they did when we tried them out in the store. Thankfully, there is now a fashionable solution to this problem: PIGGY PILLOWS.

I was slipping around in my hard, flat sandals from the lotion applied to my feet and I thought, ‘there must be something out there that will absorb moisture, cushion my hard sandals and accommodate the between the toe thong part of my shoe’. I also considered, if the insoles are going to be worn in open shoes, they should look cute as well! After searching all over drug stores, department stores and the Internet, I couldn’t find anything that accomplished all the checkpoints mentioned above, so I made a pair. The first time I placed them in my sandals, I knew I was in love and wanted pairs for all my shoes.
Favorite Accessory? My favorite accessory would have to be Piggy Pillows :) but a close second would be my white fedora with black wide trim followed by a clutch shaped like a folded glossy fashion magazine with a black leather clasp. I just love it.

What is your favorite part about your job? My favorite part of my job would be hearing the positive feed back from my customers. Most women are immediately attracted to the packaging, colors and prints of Piggy Pillows, but once they try a pair on... well I love to see their expressions. I call it the, “ahhhhhh” face! That is the most wonderful feeling, knowing you were able to create a product that women relate to and love. What is your favorite pair of heels? When it comes to my favorite pair of heels, well, that’s a tough one! I would have to say that I go for anything with a peep or open toe so I can show off my fabulous pedicure. I adore classy with an edge. L.A.M.B shoes by Gwen Stefani usually nails it! What are your future plans for Piggy Pillows? My plans for Piggy Pillows are not set in stone but at the same time are limitless! I’m in the process of expanding the line to include more accessories for shoes and feet while trying to be different. I want to

RG'S GUIDE TO INJURY-PROOF WORKOUTS BY BARBARA JEANNE
What makes me smarter than many others that talk about fitness or workouts? I have the background of working for an orthopedic Doctor As well as working at rehabilitation centers for many years and I am a physical therapy asst.
MANY OF THE EXERCISES THAT I SEE MANY FITNESS INSTRUCTORS ARE DOING ARE HARMFUL. Not all, but a lot. First off, they have to know about you before they tell you to go do 50 jumping jacks. If you have a bad back, neck, if you have ever injured your coccyx bone or have injury to your hips, ankles or basically any part of your body jumping jacks is not your ideal choice of exercise. You can do them with low impact, extending one heel then the other heel. Next, if you work on a computer all day you should not work out your forearm, it might do more damage than good. If you do, you need to work that area so that it is not hitting the same target area that you type with. If you work with your arms all day you don’t want to overwork your biceps. If you do work out you have to know what you are doing because you can injure your biceps and it will trigger up your arm to your neck, then down your arm and that can be very painful. Working out your arms is great especially that little pocket that tends to become flabby underneath your arm pit. But you shouldn’t raise your arms too much with heavy weights over your head. If you drive a lot, sit with your head down, or have had a neck or shoulder injury, this will only trigger the injury. So be careful in knowing what you need to be doing over your head. Last but not least, in therapy most therapists do not do crunches but they are so popular in almost every aerobics class. Make sure you are not jerking your head and make sure the small of your back is planted firmly on the floor. If it doesn’t feel right don’t do it. If you do any of the exercises and it hurts during or afterwards, in a way you feel uncertain, ask the instructor. If the pain continues or hurts (more than soreness) over a day or two don’t continue. RGM © 70
The instrutor has to really know and tell you alternatives to the movements if you have any injuries in that area that is being worked out. When you do the exercises the proper way you will see better and quicker results. The most important thing is that you want to continue to exercise. So try a class that you feel you will enjoy. Doing this gives you a better chance of staying with something you like. If you can’t commit to exercise, put on music and dance, walk around the house. Remember any movement or exercise is better than none. Lastly, stretch, it is so important and it literally takes minutes. Your new lifestyle is just around the corner, so you better get started. One, two, three... Go!

igh school and college can be easily considered the best and the worse parts of being a teenager. Year after year, students transition from living with their parents to living in strange new cities to attend college, often with little to no money to spend on flashy or fashion-forward items. Due to these, and many other factors college students have a reputation for pulling all-nighters and attending classes in hoodies and sandals. Students On Styling, or S.O.S. for short, aims to help college and high school students boost their image and self esteem by teaching them about fashion, beauty, and hygiene.

The organization was born when executive director Lora Brooks was visiting her old high school, where it seemed the students didn’t really care about their appearance. Ms. Brooks thought the students needed to be taught how to dress appropriately, so she began spreading the word about the “Simplicity of Styling”. She teaches students how to improve how they look and how they feel about themselves in workshops that include Skincare 101, Bodycare 101, Hairstyles 101, Makeup 101, and The Eight Classic Pieces in a School Diva or Dude’s Closet. S.O.S. workshops are absolutely free for students. The first 100 people to attend a workshop get a gift bag stuffed with products from Teen Vogue and H&M, Dunkin Donuts and McDonald’s gift cards and coupons, and S.O.S lip products. That’s right, S.O.S also has their own line of gorgeous lip products! Before starting S.O.S., Ms. Brooks had plenty of experience in the beauty and fashion industry. She was a model for twelve years and has been a makeup artist for Victoria’s Secret for seven years. She has worked with Ikon Modeling Agency and Fresh New Faces in NYC, and was a PT instructor at the Barbizon School of Modeling, teaching pre-teens everything from how to dress and how to put on makeup, to walking the runway and modeling in commercials. Ms. Brooks definitely knows what she is doing when it comes to image and putting your best self forward. With a resume like hers, why wouldn’t you take her advice? She says she keeps it simple with her makeup and clothing style, and you would never believe that she is going on 60 years old. People even think her son is her boyfriend!
“I truly believe in keeping it simple in everything in life,” Ms. Brooks says. “That way you will always be current and not overdo it!”
