Grignolino!

Grignolino goes way back; both historically and for us at Metro Wines, personally. Te other half of Metro Wines, my husband, John Kerr was born and raised in Napa. Late in the 1970s and early 1980s he toured wineries, already looking for the diference! Most had the same varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

“Only one wine stood out for me,” says John, “Grignolino made by Heitz Cellars.” Tis is the winery that makes some of the top iconic wines from Napa. And yet, while the bottles probably provided little revenue, Heitz continued to produce Grignolino. Mystery explained. In talking to the staf, John discovered Grignolino was the winery owner’s favorite grape.

Even now, most shoppers do not know about Grignolino. Now is the time to meet this grape as the lighter body and fruit are a match for spring and summer. Te crispness is reminiscent of a white wine but with slightly more weight, Grignolino stands up to any picnic.

Grignolino, a temperamental varietal to grow, is a red grape from the Monferrato hills of Piedmont. Te varietal has been in a battle for press with its neighbors, big boys such as Nebbiolo which makes Barolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. As a result, Grignolino has never ventured far from home, although today, there are Grignolino vines in California, in the Santa Clara and Napa valleys.

Heitz Cellars still makes an extraordinary Grignolino with characteristic favors of strawberry and raspberry and a touch of pomegranate. While other wines from Heitz are available in North Carolina, the Heitz Grignolino is not. But, we got you covered! Our bottle is from the source, La Casaccia “Poggeto” Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese. Poggeto is 100% certifed organic Grignolino, from vines raised in limestone and chalk at 450 meters in elevation and fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures with ambient yeast.

Poggeto is the top of the hill owned by Giovanni Rava and his wife Elena. Close by is their 18th century cellar in the village of Cella Monte, in northern Monferrato. Cellaring results in a wine that is bright and aromatic. And the cellar, carved out by their great-grandfather, was recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Te cellared Poggeto is foral yet dry with red fruit and spice laced with just enough fne tannins to give the wine spring but not sharpness. Tis wine can be served at room temperature, but it shines at 55 degrees. Beautiful pale cherry color in the glass, Poggeto is meant to drink fresh and young. Grignolino makes a joyful aperitif and a great partner for Sunday Brunch pairing with favors from parsley to black sesame to citrus.

Te importer says that, even today, few people know about Grignolino. So, this gorgeous grape combined with its relative novelty makes it a hit with guests. And at under $20 a bottle, Poggeto appeals to adventurers on a budget.

Looking for something a little diferent? Try Poggeto Grignolino!

Is Pickleball the Secret to a HAPPY RETIREMENT?

Pickleball, described by some as the lovechild of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, is taking over the hearts and courts of players around the globe. It’s hard not to fall for this game, whether you’re swinging a paddle for the frst time or you’re a seasoned pro. Te reasons behind its skyrocketing popularity? Tey’re as varied and enticing as the game itself.

First up, pickleball is incredibly accessible. You don’t need the agility of a tennis player or the precision of a badminton expert to have a blast. Te equipment? Simple—a paddle, a plastic ball with holes, and a net. Tat’s it. Te court is smaller than a tennis court which makes it easier to move around and keep up with the game. It’s perfect for all ages and skill levels, making it a fantastic family activity or a way to make new friends at local communities or clubs.

Ten there’s the fun factor. Pickleball combines elements of several racquet sports but lowers the intensity. Tis doesn’t mean it lacks competitive edge or excitement; quite the opposite. Te game’s unique rules, like the underhand serve and the non-volley zone (afectionately known as the “kitchen”), add a strategic layer that keeps every match interesting and engaging.

Social interaction is another massive draw. In pickleball, camaraderie stands out just as much as individual skill. Doubles play is incredibly popular, emphasizing teamwork and communication. It’s common to see players laughing together—friendships are ofen formed across the net.

Te health benefts shouldn’t be overlooked either. Playing pickleball ofers a great cardiovascular workout, improving heart health, fexibility, and balance. It’s also easier on the joints compared to other racquet sports, thanks to the lighter equipment and smaller court. Whether you’re looking to shed a few pounds, stay active, or simply enjoy some outdoor time, pickleball ticks all the boxes.

Lastly, pickleball is sheer, unadulterated joy. It’s a break from the mundane, a way to inject some laughter and lighthearted competition into your day. Tere’s a certain magic to the game, whether it’s the thwack of the ball, the satisfaction of a well-placed shot, or the shared smiles afer a game. In the fast-paced world we live in, pickleball ofers a slice of simple, unfltered happiness.

In conclusion, pickleball’s allure lies in its simplicity, the joy it brings, and the community it builds. Whether you’re in it for the laughs, the love of the game, or the lure of competition, pickleball has something for everyone. And in a world that ofen seems too complicated, the simple pleasure of pickleball can be just the remedy we need.

Planning the Perfect PICNIC

Planning a picnic is not only a way to enjoy a meal; it’s an invitation to connect with nature and create lasting memories with friends and family. When it comes to picturesque picnic spots, Western North Carolina ofers a bounty of locations where the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the sounds of cascading streams set a perfect scene. Here’s how to plan an unforgettable picnic in this beautiful region.

Choose Your Spot

DuPont State Recreational Forest: Known for its stunning waterfalls and ample hiking trails, this forest ofers several serene spots where you can lay your picnic blanket. Te sound of the water and the shade of the trees create a peaceful dining ambiance.

Te Blue Ridge Parkway: Various overlooks along the Parkway provide breathtaking views of the Appalachian Highlands. Pack a meal and fnd a quiet spot to enjoy the sunset.

Botanical Gardens at Asheville: Ideal for those who prefer a more manicured natural environment. Te gardens ofer a tranquil setting with the convenience of being close to the city.

What to Pack

• Food: Choose easy-to-pack items that can withstand a bit of travel. Sandwiches, wraps, fruits, and salads are perfect. Don’t forget some sweet treats for dessert.

• Drinks: Water, iced tea, or fruit-infused waters are refreshing choices. Remember to stay hydrated, especially if you’re out on a warm day.

• Utensils and Napkins: Eco-friendly options like bamboo utensils and cloth napkins are not only better for the environment but also add a nice touch to your picnic setup.

• Comfort: A comfortable blanket is a must. Consider bringing along pillows for extra seating comfort and a tablecloth to lay over a picnic table if you prefer not to sit on the ground.

• Entertainment: Bring along games, a Frisbee, or a deck of cards. If you’re musically inclined, a guitar or a small portable speaker can set the mood for some background music.

Safety and Etiquette

• Leave No Trace: It’s crucial to pack out everything you brought. Keeping our natural spaces clean and pristine ensures that others can enjoy them too.

• Be Weather Wise: Check the forecast before you go. Being prepared for rain or unusually hot weather can make or break your picnic experience.

• Respect Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from any animals you encounter and do not feed them.

Western North Carolina’s diverse landscapes provide the perfect setting for a day out picnicking. Whether you’re looking for a mountain adventure or a peaceful retreat near the water, there’s a spot waiting to be discovered.

Happy Picnicking!

How to Stop Giving People POWER Over You

In life, it’s easy to fall into the trap of allowing others’ opinions, actions, and attitudes to dictate our feelings, self-esteem, and decisions. However, giving people undue power over us can lead to a diminished sense of self-worth and autonomy. Here are key strategies to reclaim your power and foster a more empowered and independent mindset.

Recognize Your Worth

Te frst step in not letting others have power over you is to recognize your intrinsic worth. Understand that you are valuable, regardless of anyone’s opinion or treatment towards you. Recognizing your worth is foundational to setting boundaries and asserting your needs and desires without fear of rejection or criticism.

Set Healthy Boundaries

Setting healthy boundaries is critical in maintaining your power. Communicate clearly what is acceptable and what is not in how others treat you. Boundaries are not about controlling others but about respecting yourself. Remember, it’s okay to say no, and it’s okay to prioritize your well-being.

Focus on What You Can Control

You cannot control others’ actions, but you can control your reactions and emotions. Focusing on what you can control, such as your attitude, your responses, and the direction of your life, empowers you. Tis shif in focus helps reduce the impact others can have over you.

Cultivate Self-Reliance

Becoming more self-reliant means developing confdence in your ability to handle life’s challenges without overly depending on others for validation or support. Invest time in understanding your strengths and weaknesses, and trust in your abilities to make decisions and solve problems.

Practice Self-Compassion

Be kind and compassionate toward yourself. Everyone makes mistakes and experiences setbacks. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would ofer a friend in a similar situation. Tis approach helps you maintain a positive selfimage and reduces the power others may have in afecting your self-esteem through criticism or disapproval.

Stay True to Your Values

Know what you stand for and align your actions with your values. When your behavior is congruent with your beliefs, you build integrity and resilience against external infuences. People’s power over you diminishes when you are confdent and consistent in living out your values.

Seek Supportive Relationships

Surround yourself with people who uplif and support you. Supportive relationships foster a sense of belonging and confdence. Having a network of friends or family members who encourage your growth and respect your boundaries reinforces your autonomy and reduces dependency on validation from those who might not have your best interests at heart.

Learn From Criticism Without Internalizing It

Constructive criticism can be a valuable tool for growth, but it’s essential to learn from it without letting it defne your self-worth. Assess feedback objectively, take what is helpful, and discard what is not without allowing it to afect your sense of self.

Empower Yourself Through Personal Growth

Continuously seek personal development and growth. Learning new skills, expanding your knowledge, and improving yourself can enhance your self-confdence and reduce the signifcance of others’ control or infuence over your feelings and decisions.

By nurturing a deep sense of self-worth, setting and respecting personal boundaries, focusing on selfimprovement, and fostering supportive relationships, you can signifcantly diminish the power others have over you. Remember, the most crucial opinion about you is your own; ensure it’s a kind and empowering one.

Local Music Makers

“Insomnie” An Alt-Pop Symphony of Sound & Emotions from the artist formerly known as Carly Taich.

As an elder musician and music lover, I have to confess that I am only somewhat evolved when it comes to seeking and appreciating new music from most genres.

Fortunately for me and now for all of you, our April Local Music Maker, 32 year old New Song Finalist, Carly Taich Kotula (aka Moon Bride) invited me to listen to and then talk with her about her new release, a concept album of 11-strong, nocturnal tracks she’s called Insomnie.

Since this is her third record release but the frst one using her new stage name, I thought I’d ask her, why the change from using her given name professionally, to using ‘Moon Bride’. “Taich is hard to pronounce and spell. It was hard to market myself. I don’t rely on management, agents or labels. Tere are great industry people out there helping artists to be more known. But I’m proud that I do it all myself. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I cannot just be an artist. I have to be a business woman, a marketing expert. I want to keep growing and make money but it’s not all about money; it’s about my ability to keep doing what I love. Tis shif has helped me feel more independent with my career; so that I don’t worry about fnding a gate keeper to lif me up.”

Gate keepers are listening to this new record. Since our interview a few short weeks ago, the rave reviews are beginning to pour in. Under the Radar Media just named

Insomnie one of its “New & Notable 2024” releases.

Right from the start, Carly dares us to face our fears and insecurities. Each song, written at the height of the pandemic, melds into the next and becomes a journey laden with questions and introspection.

Inspired by a myriad of genres, from 60’s synth pop to electronica, using a gamut of instruments, violins to electronic programming, each track oozes a juxtaposition of thoughtful abandon.

Carly sings the praises of producers James S. Smith and Michael Minkof who were as playful as they were deliberate. “I’d have an idea, a jumping of point, but James and Michael are the sonic-creatives. Jimmy doesn’t do ‘good enough’; he lives excellence. We didn’t want to box ourselves in; so we always came back to what served the song best.”

Afer speaking with Carly for about an hour today, I am thrilled to share with you parts of our conversation, where we dive into a few of the tunes to discuss their deeper meanings.

From her Electronic Press Kit there’s this description: “Insomnie visits the psyche of a person seeking harmony in times of intense polarity, wading through the

10 50+ Living | April 2024

discomfort of division and eventually fnding refuge in the idea of a broken but beautiful community.”

Te opening track “Why Are You Sleeping?” she and co writer Michael Minkof “tell the story of a person who is lost in the translation of everything; hearing diferent perspectives leaves this person confused by the world and afraid; they can’t think for themselves anymore.”

‘Everybody thinks they’re a saint. Everybody thinks they’re in the right. I can’t compete, can’t complain. I’m just trying to sleep at night.’

By the 4th track “Prove Me Wrong,” the energy kicks up a notch and this person is starting to confront and defend. “Why you treat me like a second class citizen? If you knew me I think you’d think I’m innocent. Try and prove me wrong. Come on and prove me wrong.”

Te 5th track, “In Your Tirties” is like so many songs on this album. It starts of with tension, a dilemma: “We’re always working for money so we can buy time. But even when we get the stuf, don’t you know it’s never enough to make it last”

…and by the end, it’s a message of and for hope: “It’s alright, it’s alright, don’t stop now, it’s alright” and the track wraps with a sensational Moon Bride moment: a mouth-trumpeting jazzy-cool solo to soothe and encourage.

For me, “Nothing Good” into “Stop Wanting” is the most profound transition of back to back tracks on the album. Tey’re both flled with angst. Te chorus in “Nothing Good”: “Why’d you have to ask me what I wanted to be? Couldn’t you just let me breathe? If getting a degree would make me happy, set me free; honey, what a luxury.”

If I had enough space to include all the lyrics to “Stop Wanting,” I would. Here’s a taste of what Moon Bride describes as “an emotional roller coaster”: “I want to be humble /I want to make lots of money /I want to be taken seriously /I want to be funny /I want to just do nothing / And be known for something /I want to stop wanting.”

Te next song, “Tat’s Why” reminds me of a Burt Bacharach pop song and a 1930’s three quarter time movie theme song. You’ll hear compelling background voices on this one and the string bass part played by Adam Higgins is phenomenal. Tere’s a tender pleading like a ‘Calgon! Take me away’ moment: “Passing cars are the poor man’s ocean; reminds me of summer and suntan lotion. What I wouldn’t give to go back to that place. Hands on the wheel. Tune out the chatter. Try not to feel. Hold on for Sa-turdaaaay.”

Te second to last song, “Conduits” is my favorite among these gems. Take a listen to this quiet symphony of reassurance and peace. Tese lyrics say it all for me personally: “So go outside and breathe the air. Don’t be

scared to stop and stare. Stay a while and be a child of God. Climb a mountain or go fshing. Te heart beats without your permission. We’re only here to be conduits of love.”

Spring Blossoming And Mindfulness

Spring’s arrival symbolizes renewal and growth, making it an ideal time to embrace change. Te season’s vibrant energy and blooming surroundings inspire a fresh perspective.

Just as nature transforms, Spring ofers a symbolic canvas for personal reinvention. It is an auspicious time to embark on a journey of self-discovery, amid the vibrant renewal of this colorful budding season.

Te blossoming of Spring and mindfulness intertwine seamlessly. Te vibrant colors and fragrant blooms become anchors for mindfulness. Tis connection encourages a sense of calm and gratitude amidst the rejuvenation of Spring.

Let’s explore this profound connection further.

Just as fowers bloom into a colorful palette and trees bud bringing the missed array of green, mindfulness encourages us to be present, embracing the new beauty the season brings with it. Spring’s renewal serves as a gentle reminder to cultivate awareness, appreciating the unfolding moments with a sense of wonder.

As a seasonal cook, I can’t help but think of the deep connection of seasonal eating and mindfulness. It fosters a conscious and healthful approach to nourishment. Eating alongside nature’s four seasons, along with mindful eating involves giving our full attention to the sensory experience of eating ingredients we have waited all year for; not to mention the benefts it brings to our body. Spring is a delicious opportunity to explore the season’s harvest with attention.

As spring unfolds its vibrant tapestry, may it serve as a gentle reminder to embrace the present moment with mindfulness. Just as blossoms bloom in their own time, let us cultivate patience and awareness, savoring the beauty that surrounds us. In the rhythm of spring, may we fnd tranquility and a renewed connection to the simple joys of life.

Practical tips for incorporating mindfulness into daily routines amidst the restoration of spring.

• Nature Walks: Take mindful walks in nature, observing the sights, sounds and scents of Spring.

Get Growing

Spring is here, and you know what that means, right? It’s time to shake of the winter chill, grab your gardening gloves, and get ready to welcome back those delightful blooms. But, where do you even start? No worries, I’ve got your back. Here’s your go-to guide for getting your garden all spruced up and spring-ready. Trust me, your garden will thank you, and your neighbors? Well, they might just turn a shade greener with envy.

First things frst, let’s talk about clean-up. I know, it’s no one’s favorite job, but a little elbow grease now will pay of big time. Rake out all those leaves, twigs, and whatever else decided to make your garden its winter home. Tis isn’t just about making things look pretty (though that’s a defnite plus); it’s about clearing the stage for your plants to thrive.

But don’t just toss away all those leaves and debris! Consider starting a compost pile in your backyard. Not only is it an environmentally friendly way to dispose of waste, but the resulting compost will also be a fantastic natural fertilizer for your garden.

Next up, prune those plants. Yes, even those that are already looking pretty sad afer the cold winter months. Pruning promotes new growth and helps maintain the shape and size of your plants. Just remember to use clean, sharp tools and only prune where necessary.

Next up, soil care. Your plants are only as healthy as the soil they grow in, so give it some love. Mix in some compost or well-rotted manure to add nutrients back into the ground. If your soil’s looking a bit compacted afer the winter, aerate it to welcome back that much-needed air fow. And don’t forget to check the pH level of your soil and adjust accordingly.

Now, for the fun part – planning and planting. Whether you’re dreaming of vibrant fower beds or a bountiful veggie garden, now’s the time to get those seeds and bulbs into the ground. Don’t forget to consider the position of the sun and the needs of each plant. And remember, patience is key –those little seeds will need some time and TLC to grow into the garden of your dreams.

But wait, there’s more! Spring is also the perfect time to add some new features to your garden. Consider installing a bird feeder or building a small pond. Tese additions will not only bring some extra life and color into your garden but also provide food and shelter for local wildlife.

Lastly, remember to keep an eye on your garden throughout the spring season. Be on the lookout for any pests or diseases and take action immediately to prevent them from spreading. And don’t forget to water regularly and add mulch to help conserve moisture and keep weeds at bay. Set up a watering schedule and stick to it. Spring can be a bit unpredictable, weather-wise, so keep an eye out and make sure your green babies get the hydration they need, especially on the drier days.

Tere you have it! A little bit of efort now will set the stage for a season full of growth, beauty, and maybe even a nice veggie harvest. Grab your tools, get out there, and give your garden the spring awakening it deserves. And hey, don’t forget to enjoy the process; there’s something pretty magical about watching your garden come back to life. Happy gardening!
