EVENING SESSIONS UNDERSTANDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TEST RESULTS This course is designed for health care employees who wish to increase their understanding of clinical laboratory tests. The course will cover the rationale for tests that are ordered, the interpretation of lab results and the clinical significance in providing better patient care. Case studies will be used to correlate laboratory data with disease states. The content for this course is split into two-hour modules with specific focus to a given topic area. Come to one or both. Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course series, the student will be able to: • Describe the clinical implications of proper interpretation of the most commonly ordered laboratory tests • Apply knowledge of laboratory testing to case studies involving collection procedures and correlation of lab results with disease states

MODULE I - UNDERSTANDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TEST RESULTS: HEMATOLOGY ZHEC-749-104 - Wednesday, October 12, 2011 Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 Topic Areas:

Lab overview, specimen collection, D-Dimer, CBC, PT, PTT, and coagulation studies

$25, includes program materials All participants will receive a certificate for 2 contact hours from Reading Area Community College. RACC is an approved provider (May 2010) of continuing nursing education by the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Commission on Accreditation. Credits will be distributed at the completion of the program.

MODULE II - UNDERSTANDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TEST RESULTS: CHEMISTRY ZHEC-750-302 - Tuesday, November 15, 2011 Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM RACC, Schuylkill Hall, Room 210 Topic Areas:

Cardiac, liver, and renal studies, electrolytes, glucose, thyroid tests, urinalysis and lipid profiles

Tuition:

$25, includes program materials

Presenter: Alayne Fessler, MEd, MT (ASCP) Alayne received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Susquehanna University, her certificate in medical technology from Saint Joseph School of Medical Technology and her master’s degree in education from Penn State. She is currently the program director of the Medical Laboratory Technician Program at Reading Area Community College.
