HEADMASTER’S CORNER The Academy is an unusually complex school. This complexity is a direct result of its dual mission to be a private, independent school that also serves a population of local, publicly funded students. Private, independent schools chart their own courses, compete with other schools in the enrollment marketplace, and are fully responsible for their own financial condition, the quality and condition of their campuses, and their overall reputations. This perfectly describes the private side of Fryeburg Academy, in particular, the boarding program. The Academy’s other side is very different. The public side leaves the school dependent on the State, exposing us to government interference and to wild fluctuations in funding for local students. Over the past decade, government interference has become more virulent and government funding has become increasingly unreliable. In fact, in just three years, the Academy will have lost nearly $1 million in operating income from the State – money that had once been guaranteed by State law.

Dan Lee, Fryeburg Academy Headmaster since 1993

Despite these troubling trends, the Trustees and I are absolutely committed to preserving the historic mission of Fryeburg Academy: the education, side by side, of local day students and boarding students from a wide array of cultures. To ensure our success in this important work, the Academy will need to accomplish the following lofty, yet realistic goals: -

We must continue to offer extraordinary educational programming in first-rate, well-kept facilities.

-

We must increase the amount of money we raise from Annual Giving. This increased generosity must come from our alumni, parents, friends, and neighbors. Every dollar of Annual Giving has the effect of replacing the precious tuition dollars lost to the State. Annual Giving will keep us healthy and strong. Annual Giving will also help us to cope with the uncertainties of funding for our local students.

-

We must build a much larger endowment; this, too, will keep us strong and will give the Academy the financial wherewithal to survive, to flourish and to serve the community of Western Maine well into the future.

A gift to Annual Giving is an investment in today’s students. A gift to the endowment is an investment in future generations of Academy students. So, please consider acting now to help us preserve our historic mission. Everyone can participate in Annual Giving; we are grateful for gifts of any size. Gifts to our endowment can be made now or as you do your estate planning. In order to protect and defend our complex mission, we absolutely need your support – now more than ever. -1Fryeburg Academy, 745 Main Street, Fryeburg, Maine 04037, (207) 935-2001 x 3137, www.fryeburgacademy.org, e-mail-alumni@fryeburgacademy.org

ALUMNI DIRECTOR First, I have been in the position of Alumni Director since July 1 and I am starting to get the hang of how things work. It has been a very enjoyable transition into this position. What I have enjoyed the most is the getting reacquainted with fellow classmates and friends; not to mention the host of new friendships I have made with other alums. This is one of the most positive experiences I have ever had in a job. It is all about the love that you have for Fryeburg Academy. Seeing you at the events and activities that have taken place in the last six months has really showed me the care that our alums have for this school, and for the students who currently attend. We are making every effort to showcase all the things that our students are doing on campus through the school year. From musicals and plays to sports and activities, the student body is active and involved on many different levels. Think back to your time at the Academy and remember all the things that you were involved in as a student. Think of how much joy you received knowing you were being supported by the community and those who came before you. That is the same joy we hope to give to our students, today. At the same time we do not want to forget our past. This year marks the longawaited formation of Fryeburg Academy’s new “Hall of Excellence.” It will recognize the achievements of former athletes, coaches and support personnel who have performed at the highest level in the field of athletics. We are very excited about this addition to our recognition of former students, faculty and staff. It gives another avenue to spotlight our fellow classmates down through the years.

Todd Gallagher, FA’s Alumni Director

While on the topic of fellow classmates, it is never too early to talk about reunion. Make your plans and come back to see us. This year the classes ending in “5” and “0” will be highlighted. Each year we reward the class who returns with the most alums. Participation is always very high, but I challenge you to make it bigger. I am specifically asking the classes that have graduated within the last ten years to return and build up reunion weekend. Your presence has been missed, and we want to see you and find out what you are doing. Many of you feel that you have not been away long enough to be interested in a reunion. Folks, time flies! Before you know it, 20 years will have passed; and you will not have returned to see your friends. You can’t let that happen; life is too short. Yes, this is a lecture on priorities, and if for nothing more, a weekend of laughter and tales of the old days would be great for one’s soul. Don’t make excuses why you can’t come, make reservations so you will come! In this past year the Academy has received such a facelift that visitors liken it to a college campus. The new buildings and the upkeep of the grounds have given a renewed sense of pride to the student body, faculty and staff. Those of you who have not seen this makeover will be extremely impressed when you return. So make your plans now! Reunion Weekend will be August 20th, 21st and 22nd. I look forward to seeing a number of new faces this year to go along with all of you who return every year. I ask each of you to bring one additional classmate who did not come last year. It would make this the best reunion to date. Get excited and make the effort; you won’t be disappointed!

PUBLIC RELATIONS & ANNUAL GIVING It’s Super Bowl Sunday as I write this trying to get this issue to our printer (J.S. McCarthy in Augusta, Maine) in a hurry so we can get it out the door to you. Every issue seems to stretch to the maximum 112 pages our printer allows without moving to a whole new format. Remember “Scenes” is downloadable on our website in both a pdf and as a digital version. We’re trying to do more at FA with technology and keeping in touch. We have a regular e-newsletter that comes out on Fridays. If you’re not getting it, there is only ONE reason - we don’t have your correct e-mail address. Send it on to us at alumni@fryeburgacademy.org. We’re also on Facebook with regular news, stories and photos from FA! We’re so excited to welcome Maria Gomiz Maillett ‘95 to FA’s Alumni & Development Office. Sometimes things just work out great. Maria just happened to stop by the office and we got talking about our job opening. Turns out to be a perfect fit. Besides working on our extensive database handling alum and donor information, Rachel Andrews Damon ‘76, FA’s Director of Public Relations & Annual Giving Maria is handling Facebook and several of our technology efforts. Also turns out we’re neighbors over in West Fryeburg but had never met. The fact that Maria attended FA as a boarding student from Barcelona, Spain, also allows us all to benefit from her unique perspective. Seems a certain town student really made an impression on Maria during her days in Frye Hall! Thank you, Amos ‘95! Bennett Damon ‘10 & Bailey Damon ‘05 Todd Gallagher ‘82, FA’s Alumni Director, is very busy putting together a school-wide Haiti Relief Benefit for the American Red Cross. All of our thoughts are with the Francillon Brothers, Alan ‘81 & Roberto ‘79, former FA dorm students. I was able to get in touch with Alan on Facebook. He writes, “Bonjour Rachel-My family did survive the quake. My mother’s house is gone but she was in Miami at the time. Roberto, my brother, is fine also. My building at work is standing but damaged and waiting for experts to take a look at it. I lost four friends, my uncle, and a neighbor. Your country is helping Haiti a lot.” You can email Alan & Roberto at: francillonalan@ yahoo.com. I hope you all won’t mind me including a photo of my children as I’m approaching empty nest syndrome. My son, Ben ‘10, graduates in June. Drop me a line and let me know how you’ve We welcome Maria Gomiz Maillett ‘95 who has been hired to handled this stage of life! OUR THEATER SEATS DONORS & MESSAGES AT FA JOIN THE LIST! The new Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center at FA has 381 theater seats. A quiet portion of our fundraising effort has been selling these seats to donors who may wish to honor, tribute, or memorialize family and friends. The price of each seat is a $1,500 donation to FA. Then an engraved brass plaque is permanently placed on the back of each seat with the donor gift message. See the list of messages on the next two pages. Call or email Rachel Andrews Damon ‘76 at (207) 935-2001 x 3134 or at rdamon@fryeburgacademy.org or alumni@ fryeburgacademy.org if you are interested. NOTES & COMMENT FROM ALUMNI HOUSE

Greetings from the Academy’s Department of Optimism. In the annals of Academy lore, the fire has now receded into the history books, joining the other tragedies and glories that make this venerable old school what it is. The glorious new buildings are open and running, and, even setting aside the ever-present ‘wow factor’, they feel like they have been here on campus forever. The Academy’s 218th year is progressing well, and from where we sit, the mood on campus is both positive and contagious. Meanwhile, as you will hear about elsewhere in this issue, the Academy is increasingly faced with unexpected antagonism from the State of Maine’s beleaguered department of education. Not understanding the value of the Maine Academies, they instead would like us to cease to exist. But in spite of this, we will survive, thanks in part to our endowment, and to generous donors like you. Every dollar we raise is that much more meaningful as we strive to keep the Academy at the top of its league. Which all leads back to the boardroom, where the Trustees are deliberately and purposefully planning the improvements that the Academy will make next, each of which will strengthen our program to better serve the students of Western Maine, and the wider world. There is never a dull moment in Alumni House. Part of this excitement is the news that, included as a centerpiece of our plans for continued campus-wide improvements, is a restoration, and more likely, reinvention, of this historic, but tired old building to become a striking centerpiece over on this side of Fryeburg’s Main Street. Alumni House will become a graceful and stately welcome center for alumni and students alike, keeping the best of the old coupled with smart modern touches.

Tim Scott, FA’s Director of Development

Plans are also in the works to add a number of two-story faculty apartments to the ends of the dorms, providing both better living spaces for dorm faculty, while freeing up additional dorm rooms for anticipated future growth in the boarding program. Finally, athletes and spectators from near and far will be happy to know that a group of Trustees and local alumni are rapidly advancing plans to construct a new, modern football tower to replace the temporary rental one we have languished with for many years. Even when the heavy lifting is done, and when outside forces push inward, the folks in this office continue to partner with you as we help the Academy prosper, even in tumultuous times. After all, the Academy has been here for 218 years! Thank you for your support, past, present, and future. Tim Scott, FA’s Director of Development -6Fryeburg Academy, 745 Main Street, Fryeburg, Maine 04037, (207) 935-2001 x 3137, www.fryeburgacademy.org, e-mail-alumni@fryeburgacademy.org

DIRECTOR OF GIFT PLANNING Annyong haseyo - Korea, the best kept secret in Asia. I wasn’t aware of that until I had the recent opportunity to visit Seoul. My wife, Susan, and I had the wonderful experience to represent Fryeburg Academy and to host a dinner party for the parents of our current Korean students. We enjoyed an evening of receiving and exchanging gifts in the Marco Polo Club on the 52nd floor in the World Trade Tower. Outstanding! What we found was the most welcoming culture we have ever experienced in Peter Klomp, FA’s Director our foreign travels. Koreans are very gracious and their of Gift Planning The Kings Office - Seoul, Korea hospitality is extended with obvious pleasure. For those who can remember the LST’s and landing at Inchon Harbor to a devastated and destroyed land in 1950, you should see it now. Officially, Seoul is the capital and largest city in South Korea. With a population of over 10 million, it is one of the world’s largest cities. The Seoul National Capital Area, which includes the Inchon metropolis and most of Gyeonggi province, has 24.5 million inhabitants and is the world’s second largest metropolitan area. Almost half of South Korea’s population lives in the Seoul National Capital Area, and nearly a quarter in Seoul itself, making it the country’s foremost economic, political, and cultural center. It is an important destination for immigrants to South Korea, with a rapidly growing international population of over 255,000. Seoul is located on the Han River in the center of the Korean Peninsula, and historically was settled in 18 B.C. when Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, established its capital in what is now southeast Seoul. The city then became the capital of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. As the center of Korean history over the past millennia, the Seoul National Capital Area is home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeokgung, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Seoul’s influence in business, international trade, politics, technology, education and entertainment all contribute to its role as a prominent global city. It is considered to be an Alpha World City, ranking 9th in Peter Klomp, FA’s Director of Gift Planning & wife, Susan, visit with FA students in Seoul, Koreathe 2008 Global Cities Index. Seoul is the Bermjoon Kim ‘01, Jaehong Park ‘01, Hyoung Tak Son ‘00 & wife-Shelly.

Bermjoon Kim ‘01 & Jaehong Park ‘01 Seoul, Korea

Miracle on the Han River and hosted landmark international events such as the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup and will be the host city of the November 2010 G-20 Summit. It is one of the world’s top ten financial and commercial centers, home to some of the world’s largest conglomerates such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai-Kia. Seoul was Asia’s most expensive city to live in 2007 and the third most expensive city worldwide. With a GDP per capita of $32,171 in 2008, Seoul has a living standard comparable to France and Italy. In 2008, Seoul was named the world’s sixth most economically powerful city by Forbes.com, ahead of Paris and Los Angeles. We enjoyed the companionship of Bermjoon Kim ‘01 who acted as our translator and although several of our parents did not speak English, communication was never an issue, just many laughs and hand signals. In my PowerPoint presentation I provided a visual history of Fryeburg Academy which included completion of the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center and the continuing importance of annual giving and capital gifts. The days following the dinner we were treated to lunches and dinners at authentic Korean restaurants with different parents and were even given a tour of the city with a personal driver and interpreter. Such a gracious week. By the way, Kimche is delicious. I look forward to expanding Fryeburg’s outreach to Asia again next year with possible visits to Shanghai and Taipei. Kamsahamnida. Peter Klomp

ALUMNI COORDINATOR Greetings Alumni, Parents and Friends - Here’s to a Happy and Healthy 2010. First of all, I want to personally thank all who attended, in person, in writing, and in spirit, the “roasting party” that was held for me on Friday night of our 2009 reunion weekend last August. Since then, I have laughed and laughed over all the antics brought forth on that fantastic evening . . . Thank you. Laughter is wonderful and I am very grateful that my God continues to bless me with a good sense of humor . . . What would life be like without a little tomfoolery? My whole blended family wishes to personally thank the organizers of said “Roast” - Todd Gallagher ‘82, Alumni Director; Rachel Damon‘76, Director of Public Relations & Annual Giving; Florence Tripp ‘55 for the archives display, and Tim Scott, our Director of Development over these past ten years. Good job folks, you got me good! You roasted me so well there was nothing left that “good gravy” could cover. Our alumni office team is undergoing a metamorphosis with new staff and new challenges as we assemble and maintain our extensive alumni, parents, and friends database. We are all working on how we can fully implement the rapid electronic technological changes Scott Kelly ‘53-FA’s Alumni Coordinator to fit our, and your, needs. They include e-mail, Facebook, push pages, and our all inclusive and ever-changing Academy website. Most recently, the State of Maine’s Department of Education has cut the allotments for each contractual day student to levels that will significantly reduce our income. This is already having an impact on the coming year’s 2010-2011 budget. This shortfall challenges our Academy Annual Giving Program to cover the loss and pushes our efforts into the highly significant limelight of support. It behooves us to both increase our number of donors as well as to boost our total dollars given. We are sincerely asking for help Scott Cote-Crosskill-FA Faculty (Science Chair) hugs Mr. K. by placing greater emphasis on this important Academy program. Can we count on you - our alumni, parents, and friends - for support? before raking him over the coals.

We are also in the throes of establishing much closer contact with our international student countries for their support, especially through our newly established Academy International Chapter here on campus. This international chapter is partnered with the ESL (English as a Second Language) department. The establishment of the Fryeburg Academy Hall of Excellence is well underway. We have several nominations to date and a fall 2010 Homecoming induction is planned. Please check out the Hall of Excellence article in this issue of “Scenes.” In closing, I am reminded of our alumni office team’s “Mission Statement,” which was developed last summer. “A vision to serve and ensure the legacy of Fryeburg Academy.” Please continue to join us in achieving this Mission. We sincerely need your help. Your faithful servant, Scott A. Kelly ‘53 Alumni Coordinator

Dave Greenidge ‘66 talked to the standing-room-only crowd about lessons learned from Mr. Kelly-swear words, dirty jokes and how to have a good time.

FA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Fryeburg Alumni Association’s portfolio has been on the upswing for the past six months, thanks to the US market coming back. This will help us on our mission to promote the material welfare, to add to the educational facilities and to secure the continuing usefulness of Fryeburg Academy to future generations, as it has already served those in the past to whom it stands as beloved Alma Mater. Dennis Emery ‘46 has been awarded the first Alumni Board Member Emeritus award. This award recognizes Dennis for his outstanding membership to the Association. He is now a lifelong, non-voting member and his name has been added to a plaque which has been hung at Fryeburg Academy. Thank you, Dennis, for your years of membership. You are an inspiration to all of us. Plans are well underway for this year’s Alumni Ski and Social event at Shawnee Peak. The date has been set for March 5th, with the ski race from 5pm to 7pm, and live music from 7pm to 10pm. This year we will have three sets with Rookary, FA alums, followed by Full Circle. If you have never made Terry MacGillivray ‘81, President it to the annual ski event, I encourage you to come and enjoy this ever popular Fryeburg Academy Alumni Association Alumni Social. Please don’t tell Bond MacGillivray ’85 about the event! The Association is also working on its annual book awards to graduating seniors and on the senior class gift. The Book Awards consist of two one-thousand-dollar scholarships and five twohundred-dollar scholarships. The senior gift has not been decided on yet. In the past, it has been a picture of the class and a coffee mug with all of the graduating seniors’ names listed on it. I am proud to announce two new members to the Board - Donnette Ela Barnes ‘70 and Barbara Gushee ‘84. It’s nice to have some new members with fresh ideas. If you are interested in serving on the FAAA, please let me know. See you on March 5th! Terry MacGillivray ‘81, President, Fryeburg Alumni Association. Email Terry at terrym@ sledandbed.com

ARCHIVES

Greetings Alums! I am delighted to have the opportunity to spend some time volunteering in the Archives at the Academy. History, family connections and research, Fryeburg and Fryeburg Academy are all favorites of mine, and I welcome the chance to learn more about the history of this institution. I hope to be able to share this connection with students and alumni. I will be in the Archives Office two or three days each week and, for the most part, it will center around Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the school year. I invite all of you to stop by to see what the Archives has to offer in the way of historical information, artifacts and pictures. In just the short time I have been in the Archives Office, many of you have donated FA items to the Academy to be preserved for future generations. Thank you all! I will miss my daily contact with the FA Alumni & Development Office which I have had during the past few years but I look forward to meeting you “across the street” in Archives in the wonderful Bion R. Cram Library, and, of course, to seeing you at Reunion in August! Barbara Hill ’74, bhill@ fryeburgacademy.org, (207) 935-5005 Barbara Hill ‘74 Fryeburg Academy’s Archivist

FA ANNOUNCES NEW HALL OF EXCELLENCE

Fryeburg Academy is proud to announce the formation of the “Hall of Excellence”. The mission of this body is to further recognize outstanding achievements and contributions in the area of athletics by the Academy’s many dedicated and gifted students, coaches and supporters. To get this endeavor off the ground a “Hall of Excellence” committee was formed. It is strictly a volunteer group made up of former Academy athletes, coaches and personnel. The committee will have co-chairpersons who will be the current Athletic Director and an elected member of the committee. Sue Thurston, the Academy’s Athletic Director, will be joined by Todd Gallagher ‘82, former Athletic Director and current Alumni Director, as the committee’s first co-chairs. Others joining the board in its first year will be, Dan Turner, teacher and former coach; Florence Graves Tripp ‘55, former Archivist; Brett Russell ‘56, Board of Trustees; Terry MacGillivray ‘81, coach and President of the FAAA; Jim Osgood, Sr. ‘56 Board of Trustees; Scott Kelly ‘53, former coach, teacher, Athletic Director and current Alumni Coordinator; Beth Grover Jones ‘66, teacher and former coach; Al Glover, former teacher and coach; Steve Cote ‘85, Board of Trustees; Jeff Leach ‘96, former coach and former athlete; Bruce Smith ‘67, member of the Headmaster’s Council and former athlete; and Sally Reynolds Whitaker ‘55, former Registrar at Fryeburg Academy. This group will be asked to evaluate all the nominated individuals from the Academy’s long history and select those people for induction into the hall. There will be two categories of eligibility for a nominee to fall into. They are athlete and significant-support individual. Athlete is pretty self explanatory, while significant-support individual could consist of a coach, administrator, teacher, volunteer, trainer or even a media person. It allows the committee the opportunity to thank those who have impacted the Academy’s athletics in other ways. The criteria for these two categories are as follows: Athletic Category: Any student athlete who graduated (or attended but was unable to graduate due to mitigating circum stances), and received a letter is eligible to be nominated. Each nominee must have completed their high school career eight years prior to nomination. Significant-Support Category: An individual who has given outstanding support to the athletic programs at the Academy. This person does not need to be a graduate. The process that will be followed is: The committee will receive a written nomination form. Once a form is received, the committee will send the nominee an information packet that will need to be completely filled out and returned by April 30th, 2010. If the packet is not filled out completely, the committee will not consider the individual for induction. Once completed, the committee will create a portfolio on each nominee and the portfolio will be given to each committee member for review. The committee will then vote on that year’s induction class. An inductee will be notified in June 2010. The induction ceremony will take place during Homecoming weekend in the fall of 2010. A nominee that is not inducted will remain on file for three years. After three years re-nomination is required. Each individual inducted will be given a plaque symbolic of their achievements and their name will be placed on a “Hall of Excellence” plaque, which will reside in the Harvey Dow Gibson Recreation Center. Nomination forms are available at FA or may be downloaded at www.fryeburgacademy.org. This group has spent many months reviewing the same type programs at other institutions. They have taken input from the likes of Gorham High School, USM, Bowdoin College, Kennett High School, the Maine State Baseball Hall of Fame and New Hampton School. This has been a labor of love for those involved and this group looks forward to the success of this new endeavor. Anyone who would like to be a part of helping the “Hall of Excellence” get off the ground may do so with a donation to defer the costs of plaques and ceremony expenses. Donations may be sent to: FA Hall of Excellence, c/o Sue Thurston or Todd Gallagher, 745 Main St., Todd Gallagher ‘82-FA’s Alumni Director & Sue Thurston-FA’s Athletic Director - Co-Chairs of FA’s Fryeburg, ME 04037 Athletic Hall of Excellence -10Fryeburg Academy, 745 Main Street, Fryeburg, Maine 04037, (207) 935-2001 x 3137, www.fryeburgacademy.org, e-mail-alumni@fryeburgacademy.org

EYE ON ALUMNI Joe Gerry ‘41 The Greatest Generation WWII

After reading the winter “Scenes” magazine, Betty Shirley Gerry ‘42 contacted the Alumni Office and asked if we would like to talk with her about her husband, Joe. Joe was a WWII veteran who attended Fryeburg Academy and had a very interesting story to tell. Joe passed away in 1999, but Betty has kept his spirit alive with all his memorabilia from his time in the service. Scott Kelly ’53, Alumni Coordinator, spent an afternoon with Betty and was mesmerized by the story she told of her husband’s time in the military. I returned with Scott in September to hear the story for myself and I, too, was in awe about what I heard. The following is the tale of one soldier whose service to his country will never be forgotten. I find a truth in the adage that, “Behind everyone is a story.” Certainly, Ernest “Joe” Gerry is no exception to that saying. Joe was a member of the Class of 1941 here at the Academy, and the tale of his military service to his country makes Fryeburg very proud to have played a part in his life. This story will inform you of Joe’s exploits in the “Battle of the Bulge” in the Ardennes Forest as a member of the 106th Army Division, also known as “The Lion in the Way.” It is an amazing tale and one not many people know. After Joe’s graduation from the Academy in 1941, he attended Gorham Normal School. He was in the Manual Training Program in 1942, training in wood products to possibly become an Industrial Arts teacher. It was at this time that Joe was told he had been deferred. When he found out, he was not happy and the very next day he went to Norway, ME, to enlist. Before he made his way into the service, Joe married Betty Shirley ‘42 in April of 1943. He was sent to Camp Atterbury, IN, where he was stationed for over a year before shipping out to Ft. Devens in MA. From there Joe was sent overseas to Scotland with the 106th Army Division in October of 1944. The 106th then went to Belgium where they participated in the “Battle of the Bulge” in the Ardennes Forest. Joe Gerry ‘41 at Camp Atterbury, Franklin, Indiana This is where the story gets interesting. The “Battle of the Bulge” was a campaign that lasted from December 16, 1944, to January 25th, 1945, in the Ardennes Forest of Eastern Belgium and Northern Luxembourg. When it was all said and done, the official total of U.S. casualties totaled 80,987 men. It is said that most of these losses occurred in the first three days of fighting when two of the three regiments of the 106th Army Division, the 422nd and the 423rd Infantry, were overrun and forced to surrender. Those regiments were holding the town of St. Vith. This town was a vital crossroad for ammunition and supplies. Whoever controlled this spot had the advantage in this conflict. The 106th, along with the 14th Cavalry, set a perimeter around St. Vith and battled tirelessly to hold the ground. With continued thrusts the Germans forced the U.S. Army to retreat and fall back upon itself around St. Vith. The 422nd and the 423rd were ordered to hold ground and mount an attack on the German forces. The enemy numbers were too great and the regiments were overrun on the 18th of December. Joe was a member of one of those regiments and was taken prisoner by the Germans. The effort of these regiments bought the Allies a little time as they held St. Vith for three more days. Joe was captured on December 21st, 1944 and remained a prisoner until he January 1945 - Betty Gerry, Fryeburg in January 1945 was liberated on April 13th, November 2009 - Betty Gerry at her home in Fryeburg with a poster she made for husband, Joe Gerry ‘41, when 1945. showing Scott Kelly ‘53 & Todd Gallagher ‘82 the he was taken prisoner in WWII

With the prison camps full that were in the area, the Germans marched the American prisoners from St. Vith to near the Czechoslovakian border. It was over 500 miles and it took four months to walk it. Joe was taken to Stalag 4B near Muhlberg. Along the way, Joe was witness to one of the greatest atrocities of the war. They were marched by what was later to be termed the “Malmedy Massacre.” That was where the Germans executed 150 soldiers in cold blood and left their bodies scattered in a field. Being forced to walk by that and see the cruelness of war would be something that one would never forget. The march itself was something that only the strongest could endure. If a prisoner was to fall behind, become sick or unable to continue, they were taken out of line and shot. What little food they were given consisted of cooked grass in water, better known as “German Chicken Soup” and cooked sawdust bread. They were made to sleep in barns along the way when they were able to get inside. Twice during this ordeal they were put on rail cars and both times they were strafed by their own Allied planes. 1950’s - Joe Gerry ‘41 Once at Stalag 4B the Germans gave each American Legion Commander prisoner a postcard that was to be mailed to the 1988 - Betty & Joe Gerry ‘41 on their families of these prisoners. That seemed quite out 45th wedding anniversary of character based on all the other actions during the war. In any event, Betty was informed that Joe was alive in mid-January 1945. She knew he was alive before his own government did. Joe was moved one more time as they were marched to Stalag 8A outside of Gorlitz. The prisoners were then marched again from February 14th until April 13th covering a total of 500 miles. It was then that the Russians were moving into Germany. With a heavy Russian presence, the German guards fled and the POWs were free to rejoin their army. Officially they were liberated by the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne. Joe and his fellow soldiers now had to walk six days back to the Allied lines. They arrived at “Camp Lucky Strike” where they were deloused and cleaned up and officially considered to be back in the war. Joe, who was a T-5 motor pool technician, went back to work as a G.I. In June of 1945, Joe Gerry returned to the United States by boat and landed in Norfolk, VA. He then went back to Fort Devens, where he guarded German prisoners for the remainder of his time in the service. He was discharged from the Army in November, 1945. It was more than six months before Joe could return to work in May of 1946. After the war, Joe was awarded “The Silver Star” for his valor beyond the call of duty as a soldier and prisoner of war. The following is an excerpt from the official order Joe received: “Technician Fifth Grade Ernest C. Gerry, 31322088, 422nd Regiment, 106th Infantry Division, United States Army. For gallantry in action against the enemy on 16-21 December 1944, in Belgium. Technician Fifth Grade Gerry was a member of a volunteer patrol whose mission was to contact and lead to safety members of his regiment who became cut off and surrounded by the enemy near Schonberg, Belgium. For five days he served with this patrol in a courageous manner. Operating under enemy observation and fire, this patrol was successful in reaching and guiding to safety some fifty American soliders. During this period much vital enemy information was obtained, an enemy propaganda machine was destroyed and numerous prisoners captured. The heroic action of Technician Fifth Grade Gerry reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.” Signed, W.B.Kean, Major General, GSC, Chief of Staff Joe returned to East Conway, then moved to Fryeburg with Betty and lived a full and rich life until he passed away in 1999. He worked for Ray LaCasce in his garage for three or four years. He then worked for Larry Frunzi and his auto dealership for 25 years, and then he worked for Roger MacDonald at MacDonald Motors until his retirement. They had a son, Bob Gerry ‘66. This visit with Betty Gerry to hear this story was very moving indeed. Her pride and love for her husband shone through with every word she spoke and every piece of memorabilia she displayed. To have gone through the things he faced and to see the things he saw, Joe Gerry was a true hero for his country. Written by Todd Gallagher ‘82, FA’s Director of Alumni 1990 - Joe Gerry ‘41 with some of his WWII medals and awards.

Rayfield Payne ‘55 FA Running Legend & State Champion 1952, 1953, 1954 & 1955

Rayfield Payne ‘55 - running for home at Fryeburg Academy

Rayfield Payne ’55 is an athletic legend at Fryeburg Academy. I got to sit down with Rayfield at the Payne’s Old Homestead Farm on Route 113 in Hiram, Maine, for an interview for “Scenes.” The Paynes have over 60 head of Lowline Angus and Polled Herefords and 300 acres of farmland. Rayfield has led a very interesting life and is now facing the biggest challenge of his life – cancer.

Rayfield Payne ‘55 - from the Portland Press Herald “Rayfield Payne, of Denmark, recognized as one of the outstanding cross country runners of the State in high school and academy competition, attributes much of his success to the fact that he gets in some of his training as he runs two miles to and from the school bus line each day. In this way he emulates some nationally known marathon runners who train as they run to and from work. Payne, a student at Fryeburg Academy, has lacked any real competition this year as he has broken the course record in every dual meet in which he has competed. At the State prep school meet at the University of Maine he came in first with an 11-second lead over his teammate and closest competitor, Lucien Hamilton ‘54. No record was made as weather conditions were very poor. In addition to cross country, Payne plays basketball and runs the mile and half mile in track.”

Rayfield was born to Francis & Relaifa MacIntire Payne on Christmas Day 1935. He is exactly in the middle of the 11 children in his family. He has five elder siblings-Francis, George, Gwendolyn, Roland and Velma ‘54, and five younger-Dennis ‘56, Robert ‘57, Carroll ‘58, Herbert ‘61 and Sandra ‘62. Rayfield’s father, Francis Payne, worked at the Kittery Naval Shipyard as one of the top riggers working with submarines during WWII. He and three other men were injured by poisonous gas at the shipyard and none of them could work afterwards due to burned lungs. Rayfield says, “My father had everything going for him. After the accident, he couldn’t do anything. My father had a top notch work ethic and he taught us the same. He was quite a man.” In 1945, the Paynes moved from Kittery to Denmark to get Francis away from the harsh salt air. They had three farms at the time and raised farmgardens and had a sawmill.

Rayfield goes on to say, “I had an excellent childhood. We all had to work and we worked all the time. We worked farming and cutting timber and running the sawmill. I started working on the farm when I was five years old. Everybody today should be doing the same thing. That’s what the trouble is today (he says with emphasis), kids should be working. I worked all my life and I learned young how to work and I had responsibilities early. We raised all our own food and canned everything to preserve food.” Rayfield says most of the Payne boys were big guys. “My brother Carroll was 6’6”. He grew 11.5 inches in one year.” After moving to Denmark in 1945 Rayfield started third grade at Denmark Elementary. Rayfield remembers WWII. “I lost one uncle who worked in the shipyard and he died there. They had a lot of casualties during those days and didn’t know what safety was then. Everything had to get done fast. One of my uncles served in the war and survived. The military used to fly planes over Eliot at treetop level. We kids would go up on the hills and watch them fly over during training. We’d wave to the pilots and crew. The Germans tried to break into the shipyard twice and they fired torpedos but didn’t get through. I was not scared. I loved to see the planes. It was over in 1945. We heard about it all the time. It was a great feeling when it was over and my uncle came home. During those years we had to do without. We ate horsemeat as there was no other meat available. A lot of stuff was rationed. We lived mostly on what we raised on the farm but we were very self-sufficient.” Rayfield Payne ‘55 at his commencement from Fryeburg Academy - June 1955

Rayfield ‘55 & Ruth Wadsworth Payne ‘57 on their wedding day June 15, 1957; Rayfield with his parents, Francis & Relaifa MacIntire Payne; Ruth with her parents, Paul Wadsworth & Ada Cram Wadsworth

Rayfield began at Fryeburg Academy in September 1951. To put it mildly, he was a phenomenal athlete having developed athletic talents through his constant work on the farm. “When I was in 6th grade I started to play baseball on the FA teams. I was a big boy and had my full growth by age 13. I was the center fielder. I could throw the ball all the way to home base. I was a natural athlete because I was so active; I could do anything. That’s what you get for farming and hauling firewood all the time! All that heavy lifting helped.” “My brother, Francis, was one of the top runners at Eliot High School. He was a tremendous athlete. I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I ended up running and went into cross country. The other coaches encouraged me to run as well. I ran all kinds of races. I’d run anything – the 220, 440, 880, ½ mile or mile. In cross country the courses were all different, some 2 miles, 5K, 10K, and some more.” Academically, Rayfield says he was a good student but didn’t get to study much. “I took work home but we were always working or hunting or fishing. The teachers didn’t appreciate that either. I used to visit with “Mister” (LaCasce-FA’s Headmaster) about three times a year. I loved him. He was a tremendous man… He was very considerate, very polite and straightforward with everyone about everything. I treated him the same way. He told me I shouldn’t take the day off to go hunting. He asked me to promise that I wouldn’t do it again. I said, ‘Sir, I can’t do that.’ I told him I had to put food on the table and had to catch fish. My mother had to eat fish because of her blood pressure. Mrs. LaCasce was a very, very nice lady. Mr. LaCasce…to me he was something. Someone to really look up to. Everybody liked him.” Rayfield says all of his siblings got along great. “We were always so busy. There was no time for fighting. I was the fourth of us to graduate high school. My mother said I was going to graduate no matter what. I had to take care of the younger ones. My father couldn’t do much. He died at 62. My mother died at 76 from cancer. She used to cook at the Academy in the late 70’s. I taught my mother how to drive. She was 65 when she started driving. There was no one in the world like my mother. She was very thoughtful and kind and taught us to treat people the way we wanted to be treated. She wanted us to have religion whichever religion we chose. My father never had time to go to church. He was working all the time. He was a tremendous man and would help anybody with any problem. He helped support other families and furnished housing for some of them to get by in hard times. That’s the kind of person he was. He was a barter person and liked swapping with people like all the old farmers did.” Rayfield won the state championship mile run as an individual runner four years in a row (1952, 1953, 1954 & 1955) and his cross country team won the state championship in 1952, 1953 & 1954 under the guidance of Coach Heini Heartz. In 1955 he set the state mile record at four minutes and 32 seconds. “Heini did the exercise work with the team and then he’d tell me to go out and run the team. I was coaching at the same time. I’d give the team a 7-8 minute lead. They’d all go and then I’d start. They’d try to beat me and it gave them a challenge and gave me a challenge, too! My brothers, Carroll, Dennis & Bob were outstanding runners as well.” I asked Rayfield about his best memory from his days at Fryeburg Academy. “I had a ball at the Academy. I was always busy and active in sports. At graduation, I got a special award for having broken three track records. It was a special honor which Mr. LaCasce gave me. Then he gave me three broken phonograph records to be funny. My sister, Velma ‘54, received the Most Athletic Award at her graduation.” “Ted Blaich and I used to lock horns. I never did his work. He’d come up and say, ‘Rayfield, why didn’t you write four pages?’ and I’d say, ‘Listen, everything you need to know is in that half page.’ He would say he wanted a real article and every time I’d write a paper it wouldn’t be long enough. He got the facts but not the blather. He asked me once about what time I was coming in during a race and I said, ‘In 11 minutes and 15 seconds.’ He was running the stopwatch and it was exactly 11 minutes and 15 seconds and I had taken time off my record. Mr. Blaich said, ‘Payne, I’ve got to apologize to you. I thought you were being a smart little bugger but you did exactly what you said you would.’ We got along good. He taught Problems of Democracy. He was good at it. I never had time to study. The books sat on the shelf. I had to carry water

and lug wood. We had no water pumps and had to carry all our water for everything - washing clothes, drinking and cooking. We heated all by woodstove. And we had the animals to feed and care for. It’s the way my whole life has been.” After graduation Rayfield went to work building a bridge in Lovell across from Perry’s Pond. “I had a problem finding work because I hadn’t been in the service. Finally, I volunteered for the draft and served two years. I was in the Navy. I travelled through the Mediterranean, went to Gibraltar, Italy, Sicily, Greece, Turkey and off the coast of Egypt, France, England and Scotland. I loved what I was doing.” Rayfield met Ruth Wadsworth ’57 in study hall at FA during his senior year. They were married on June 15, 1957, and have three children, Sherry, Chris and Peter. Daughter, Sherry, is an RN at Eastern Maine General and has one son; daughter, Chris, runs the family farm with Ruth, and, son, Peter, was in the US Air Force, has three children, and is now, unfortunately, battling lyme disease. Ruth’s parents bought the Old Homestead Farm in 1947 after the Brownfield fire. Ruth’s mother, Ada Cram Wadsworth (former FA Faculty from 1925-1929) lives at the farm which is now owned by Ruth & Rayfield. Ada is the sister of Bion Cram ’33 who honored his sister by donating and naming the Ada Cram Wadsworth Arena at Fryeburg Academy in her honor. Ada will be 99 years old on November 20, 2009. Rayfield and Ruth have been married for 52 years. “We work together and we always have. It’s give and take. We’re in it together. When you don’t have that you don’t have anything. We are very similar. Ruth is a very hard worker. She’s 70 and as active as Rayfield Payne ‘55 and wife, Ruth Wadsworth Payne anybody can be and enjoys doing things. She has her things that she does. We don’t ‘57, of Old Homestead Farm in Hiram, Maine, with begrudge each other anything. And, of course, she loves to farm and the animals. She their polled herefords at Fryeburg Fair 2007. knows them all by name and can do anything with them. People like to buy our animals because they’re usually very acclimated to people. We’ve gone to Florida, Denver, Tennessee, Canada, Toronto, Quebec on farm business. We would rent motorhomes and visit other farms.” Rayfield made his career working for hydroelectric plants. “I was not an inside person and needed to be doing an outside job. I was a supervisor. Lawrence Keddy, who I worked for, had a desk for me but I refused it. I said my glovebox in my truck would do just fine. A desk has no value to me. I like to be outdoors and moving.” Rayfield planned an early retirement at 62 but ended up working five more years and retired at age 67. I asked Rayfield for his advice for today’s Academy student. He said, “Participate in activities. Become part of the school. Study and learn. Learn to do everything to the best of your abilities. You will always be successful if you do that. I’ve seen it so many times. What you learn growing up, you’re going to take with you.” In January, Rayfield found out he has had cancer for about two years. “It is very slow moving, but when it got to stage four, the fastest growing stage, it moved very rapidly. I am dealing with that now. I would have lived for only two months if I didn’t do the chemotherapy. Now it’s been since January. It’s August and I’m still going. I’ve had to change chemo treatments twice and just started another program.” Rayfield says, “I am not afraid to die. I have no regrets. I’ve got to deal with the end. I don’t begrudge anything and have lived a good full life and I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to do. I did it all when I could. I’ve got a lot of photos in my mind. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” Note: On November 3rd, after this article was completed, Mr. Kelly ‘53 accompanied me on what turned out to be a final visit to Rayfield. We found Rayfield to be in wonderful spirits and very happy to visit with us. I was able to read this article to him and he gave his thumbs up. He was the exact same Rayfield in spirit - vibrant runner, farmer and friend that he has always been. He was hoping to rally and go hunting in Northern Maine with his brother, Bob Payne ‘57. Rayfield’s daughter, Chris, was able to take him on the hunting trip for one night. Rayfield died on December 2, 2009. FA Students & Coaches pitch in to help Family of Rayfield Payne ‘55

Shortly after Rayfield’s passing, I spoke with his wife, Ruth Wadsworth Payne ‘57. In conversation she mentioned that the family had a lot of work to do to prepare their farm for visitors after Rayfield’s funeral. The day before his funeral, FA Track and Cross Country Coach Bill Reilly, as well as history teacher and coach John Atwood ‘71, and FA’s own elite runners, Seth ‘11 and Silas Eastman ‘13 of Chatham, NH, headed for the Payne Farm in Hiram to clean out a garage for them. It was an incredibly moving afternoon watching our “small FA army” get work done that would have taken the Payne family forever to accomplish. Chris Payne, Rayfield’s daughter, said, “This warms my heart. We are so grateful. My dad would have loved this...”

Bob Jones ‘56

The year was 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers finally beat the Yankees in the series, the Cleveland Browns won the NFL championship, the Syracuse Nationals, who are no longer in existence, won the NBA title and the Detroit Red Wings, led by all-time-great Gordie Howe, won the Stanley Cup. Lee Meriwether was crowned Miss America, James Dean was lost in a fatal car crash, Disneyland opened its gates for the first time, and Tonka Trucks were the most popular Christmas gifts. While all this was going on, Fryeburg Academy sported a “pair” of athletes that beat a full house, literally all the time. The names of Rayfield Payne ’55 and Robert Jones ’56, struck fear in the hearts of opponents in the mid-fifties here at the Academy. You have just read the story of Rayfield, now it is time to find out about the other man who made everyone sit up and take notice of his actions. Robert Jones ’56 arrived at Fryeburg Academy from Bartlett, NH. The son of Robert and Arline Jones, Bob has an older sister, Bob Jones ‘56 making some great plays in basketball at the Lorraine, who still resides in Bartlett to this day and a younger “new” Gibson Gym just opened in 1955 brother, Richard ’58, (and current Trustee at the Academy), who also resides in Bartlett. Bob’s parents felt he would receive a much better education at the Academy and enrolled him as a dorm student in the fall of 1953. One of Bob’s first memories of the Academy was having to wait tables to earn a reduced rate on his tuition. Well, that and having to shovel snow the time a storm dropped 32 inches overnight - ah, the good old days. Bob played football his freshman year but was quickly encouraged by his basketball and track coaches not to play again, in fear that an injury may keep him from performing in those two sports. He did play basketball and ran track all four years at Fryeburg. It was in these sports that Bob made his mark and left lasting memories for all who knew him. One moment that Bob cherishes greatly is the fact that he scored the first basket in competition in the Gibson Gym, something that no one else can ever claim. While on the basketball court, the teams he played on were very strong, including the 1954 team that lost only one game. Bob’s talents on the court did not go unnoticed, as he was offered basketball scholarships at both the University of Illinois and Texas A&M. More on that in a minute. The story of the track and field exploits of Rayfield and Bob are legendary. Many times these two teammates scored enough points to win an entire track meet by themselves, and it happened on more than one occasion. Bob still holds the record for most points scored by an individual in a single track meet, here at the Academy. In the Oxford County Track meet in 1955, he took first place in pole vault, high jump, javelin, shot put and low hurdles. He finished second in the high hurdles and third in the broad jump. Not a bad day’s work for an entire team, let alone one athlete! He repeated the feat in 1956, only this time he added a win in the 220 for good measure. As mentioned earlier, Bob received a scholarship offer to play basketball at the University of Illinois. He was also offered a scholarship for basketball and track at Texas A&M. Bob chose Illinois and was there just three days when he was notified that the school had promised too many scholarships. Students’ names were put in a hat and drawn out for the scholarship. This time, however, Bob was not so lucky and his scholarship was taken away. He then tried to get into A&M but their scholarships had been spoken for as well. So, he opted out of school and went to Memphis, Tennessee, and began working for “Wonder Bread”. That lasted a year, but while he was there he met another, somewhat famous, person working in the Volunteer State. That’s right; Bob worked alongside the great Elvis Presley. Bob noted that, “Elvis was not that popular with the co-workers, but I was.” Maybe that is where the song “Don’t be Cruel” came from? After the year in Memphis, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force. Due to the fact that he was color blind, Bob could not be a pilot; so he became a fireman in the Air Force. That lasted for the next twenty years. During those years, he was stationed in a number of locations. Twice he was at Loring AFB in Limestone, Maine; and three times in England, where he met his lovely wife, Elizabeth, in 1960. He was also stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Even though he was in the service, sports still played a big part in his life. Bob got back into playing football and was a wide receiver for his team that captured the European Championship. He also played cricket in Europe. While playing, he was named “All League” for East Anglia, in Suffolk, England. He was acclaimed as a good batsman on that squad. I guess he was, all hit, no field. Bob retired from the Air Force in 1978; he returned to Bartlett with Elizabeth and their two children, Lloyd and Arlene. Bob immediately became the fire chief in the town. Between 1978 and 1983 he also served on the Conservation Committee and the Planning Board. The year of 1983 turned out to be one of life-altering moments for Bob. 1956 Fryeburg Academy Track Team: 1st row-C. Reed, S. True, Bob Jones ‘56, Bob Payne ‘55, G. Hill & G. He was in line to succeed Irish; 2nd row-A. Rogers, F. Dallinger, C. Payne, Olin Lusky ‘57, T. Saunders, J. Leeman; 3rd row-Coach Ray Loud as fire chief in the Eldon “Heini” Heartz, H. Watkins, R. Wittich, C. Lively, A. Thomas & J. Doucette Village of North Conway; but before he could assume the post, Bob was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy. This illness led to heart transplant surgery in 1984. Instead of starting a new career, he was fighting to continue his life. Flash forward 25 years, Bob Jones is still kicking and ticking as he has shattered overwhelming odds by surviving for this long. Currently, Bob is the third longest surviving heart transplant recipient in the world and second in the United States. He did suffer a setback just recently, but he was fitted with a pace maker and he appears good to go for another 25 years. Seven years ago, Bob and Elizabeth relocated to Ormond Beach, Florida. Not one to settle for the sedentary life style, Bob took his competitive nature to the hardwood lanes of the local big-ball bowling alley and took the league by storm. He was voted best newcomer in the league. I bet his old buddy Rayfield was proud of his teammate when he heard that! These two friends talked quite often in the last couple of years, reminiscing about the good old days of their track exploits. Elizabeth noted that they often talked for over an hour recalling a particular event or meet as if it just happened yesterday. Story after story would just roll out of these two, like when Bob used to drive the bus with the track team, to practice at the fair grounds; and he did not have a license! Try that now and see what happens! Stories of Bob’s good friends like Brett Russell ‘56, Martin Engstrom ‘56 and Jim Osgood ‘56, always bring a smile to his face. Well, except the one about Jim Osgood being voted most athletic, Bob still shakes his head on that one. Bob has nothing but great memories of FA. His love of sports and teammates that he played with while here, are imbedded deep in his soul. Bob has always done everything with style and flair. Most of the time he was the best at everything he did, and there is no reason to think that it won’t continue. I am sure that Bob Jones will someday be the longest-living survivor of a heart transplant. That is one victory we are all pulling for. Hilary Russell ‘86 World Traveler!

Hilary Russell ‘86 at the Great Pyramids of Giza Cairo, Egypt

Hilary Russell ’86 has landed an interesting job. This past summer we sat down to discuss her life so far. Hilary was born in North Conway, NH, the daughter of Leslie & Brett Russell ’56. She has two older sisters, Jessica Russell ’81 and Kristen Russell McDermott ’83. Hilary said, “I really liked the Academy. I was kind of a rebel and I wasn’t the best student but I still learned a lot at Fryeburg Academy. In college I made up for it and graduated Dean’s list.” Hilary was on the FA ski team and field hockey team all four years. She was a cheerleader briefly until she broke her tailbone falling from the top of a mount. She Hilary Russell ‘86 was active in dramatics as well. Hilary said, “The bottom line was that Jessica was the actress, Kristen was the skier and I was the socialite.” After graduating from FA, Hilary attended Keene State for one year and studied business. She then transferred to LaSalle Junior College in Newton,

MA and graduated in 1989. “After graduation, I worked in a bank in Portland, ME, and after a few years returned to Fryeburg and worked at Pike Conway Dahl Insurance. And then my life as I knew it changed. In 1993, Hilary was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma in her uterus. She said, “It was a very scary period of my life. My father and his wife Cindy were there for every doctor’s visit. They would listen and take notes because I could not absorb it. I had one major surgery and three less intensive surgeries over the years. I was very lucky that it had not metastasized anywhere else. I had the best doctor in the world, Dr. David Ernst at Maine Med.” At that point she had a different perspective on life. “I decided to pursue a career in aesthetics and went to the Elizabeth Grady School of Aesthetics in Medford, MA. I got my license and performed skin care, facials, body treatments, and make up. It was a great period of my life. Around that time, my mother (now Leslie Kremer) and her husband, John Kremer, went into the Peace Corps in Lithuania. My mother was 60 when she joined the Peace Corps! I was so proud of them for taking this challenge. They were gone for two years.” Jessica Russell, now married and living in Italy with husband, Filippo, an architect, was expecting twin girls. Allison and Camilla were born on June 16, 1996. Hilary said, “I went to Italy to help take care of them and planned to stay until Christmas. I fell in love with my new nieces (now 13). I helped babysit and took care of them in the small apartment that Jess and Filippo rented. We all came back to Fryeburg at Christmas. I had sent out some resumes and was offered a job at the Interlocks Salon and Day Spa in Newburyport, MA, one of the top 200 salons in the country. I Hilary goes out for a ride in Cairo, Egypt

spent four years there. Every year I would go to Italy to see my sister and my nieces. Eventually, I decided to try living in Italy to be near my nieces for one year. That was ten years ago.” Hilary lived with Jessica, Filippo, Allison and Camilla for two months then got her own apartment. She attended classes to learn the Italian language. She traveled home in 2001 to get a new visa and then 9/11 happened. “I didn’t dare fly back so I stayed home until April 2002. In April Kristen flew back with me to Italy. It was great to return. I got my certificate in teaching English as a second language and started teaching in Foligno, Italy. I worked during the school year and then I would travel home in the summer to work for Kristen (she owns Good Earth Gardening and does the stunning gardens at FA) and to be near family and friends. Hilary met her boyfriend, Lucio Schippa, while in Italy. He is a juggler and artist and travels to third world countries with a troop that entertains at children’s hospitals, poor areas, orphanages and charitable organizations. One morning Hilary took a phone call from an American friend who told her about a job as a sports commentator. He had been doing the job on an interim basis. When she asked what sport, he said, “shooting.” Although quite hesitant, Hilary was open to a new opportunity and said she would like to hear about Hilary with “Mr. Boom,” Head of the World Cup Organizing Committee, it. It turns out it was as a commentator for the ISSF (International Changwon, Korea. Shooting Sport Federation-www.issf-sports.org). The main office of the ISSF is located in Munich, Germany. The company televises World Cup shooting competitions and World Championship competitions. The three events include rifle, pistol and shotgun (trap, double trap and skeet). These are the competitive games that lead up to the Olympics. Hilary went on to say, “I talked to them and they hired me! When I asked where we were going (thinking around Italy), my new boss said, “This season we will start in Korea then China, Eqypt, Belarus, Slovania, Italy, Germany, San Marino and the last stop is China again.” My jaw dropped.” Hilary said, “I stopped teaching English one month early that year and said to myself, ‘What in the world am I doing?’ Luckily my family, Lucio and my dearest friend in the world, Carolynn Anderton Plowden ‘86 encouraged me to do it. My first stop was Changwon, Korea. My first time commentating, I was more than terrible. I knew nothing about the sport. But I was willing and able to learn fast. The experience was fantastic. Many of the participating countries are at war in their native countries but when they gather together at these events they play respectfully and peacefully against each other. It’s an incredible sight to see. There are over 70 countries involved. It’s really something to see the Muslim women shooting in the competitions. To see such varied cultures is really quite intense. When we go to competitions, we arrive at the airport, we’re met by organizers, travel to the site to drop off equipment, go to the ranges, the hotels and then cover the events. There is very little glamour and it’s a lot of running and lugging camera equiptment but it is nonetheless very exciting. We would be in different cities for about 12 days each.” Go to the ISSF website (www.issf-sports.org) and you can hear some of Hilary’s interviews! Hilary went on to say, “I still am not 100% comfortable as I have no experience being a commentator or journalist! If I was commentating on a skiing event, well maybe that would be another story. But I’ve been asked back for the 2010 season starting in Mexico, then Australia, China and other countries. The people I work with are very nice.” In closing, Hilary said, “I’m 41 now and I try to live ‘in the day’. I love Italy. Life is a beautiful gift. You never know what surprises are around the corner for you.” I asked Hilary about her advice for kids today. She said, “I would tell kids today that if an opportunity comes up in your life that scares you, it’s a sign you’ve got to do it. Live life and don’t worry about what people think . Be who you are. You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow. Also I would say if you’re in a foreign country respect the people and the culture. Be kind because it comes back to you. I’ve met so many nice and helpful people. The world over, people are good.” Email Hilary at: puddleitalia@hotmail.com Written by Rachel Andrews Damon ‘76 Hilary with cameramen Marco Remedia and Mattia Rimatore in Changwon, Korea.

Fryeburg Academy had the privilege of showing a documentary on high school football telling the story of two classic football powerhouses, Mt. Valley High School and Cape Elizabeth High School. It is the story of how these two totally opposite programs compete for the same prize each year, a Gold Ball. The movie itself was very entertaining and eye-opening as to the differences in these two towns way of life. The backdrop to this premiere was the fact that a Mt. Valley football player named Danny Garneau had been diagnosed with leukemia earlier in the year and was unable play this season. David Turner ‘88 and his entire staff organized fund raisers for this young man through the season and presented a nice check to Mt. Valley on the eve of their contest. It was an opportunity for Fryeburg to give back to the school that was first to come to our aid when our beloved Gibson Gym burned. Mt. Valley offered the uniforms off their own kids’ backs so that we could continue to play. It is a strong reminder that in times of trouble we will come to the aid of our neighbors, no matter what color their uniforms are! Gale H Miles ’55 writes “I have been married to Louise for 45 years this October. We were the first couple to be married in the new Alhambra First Baptist Church (1960). We have two daughters, Erin Kurtz of Windsor, CO and Cindy Sullivan of Grand Junction, CO, both graduates of Colorado State Univ. We lived in Santa Barbara, CA for 10 years before moving to Colorado in 1970, living at the same address since then. I received my vocational teaching certificate from Colorado State University and taught in the vocational department at Durango High School. We have a little farm upon which I apply that which I learned from Mr. Welch at Fryeburg Academy. I’ve been a bee-keeper most of my life, enjoy a large garden and raise and sell enough hay to pay my taxes. We raised milking goats (Nubians) for years as well as a beef and a pig for those years that our family was at home. My hobbies are back-packing and making wine. My best regards to all my classmate of 1955”

1965 Brian Smith ‘65 wrote, “Greetings FA and especially the Class of ‘65! I just saw Dave Hodgdon ‘65 and Don Bean ‘65 the other day and we are all looking forward to our 45th reunion next year!” 1968 Peggy Grover Pinkham ‘68 received the Fryeburg Academy Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alum Award at the 2009 Reunion. Excerpted from her introduction written and delivered by her sister, Mary Beth Grover Jones ‘66, “Peggy was born and raised by two great parents, Dwight and Mary Grover, in the small town of nearby East Stoneham from a family whose background encouraged family values, education, and community involvement. She was involved at FA with not only outstanding grades but involvement in sports, the music program, band and chorus, and one of her high points with Home Ec. teacher

Stella Gray’s encouragement was representing the state of Maine in Lady Bird Johnson’s “Keep America Beautiful” campaign in Washington DC. With her diploma from Fryeburg Academy, she embarked on a career in medicine...She first attended Westbrook Junior College. From 1970 to 1983, Peggy served as a registered nurse in various settings: acute care, emergency department, ICU, physician practice, recovery room and home health at Stephens Memorial Hospital and Oxford Hills Internal Medicine in Norway; Maine Medical Center in Portland; Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice in Rockland; and St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. From 1984 to 1990, she served St. Andrews as Director of Health Education and Community Relations, coordinating all aspects of employee and community education for St. Andrews. This while raising two sons, Matthew and Timothy, with her husband IJ. She was involved with her church as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, Sunday school director, and involved with the local YMCA. Ever changing, her career took on a new dimension when she became the Chief Nursing Officer for St. Andrews Hospital and Health-care Center from 1990-1997. In that position, she was responsible for all hospital nursing and nonnursing clinical services and accountable for the Gregory Wing Nursing Facility. From 1997 to 2008, Peggy was the PresiRoy Andrews ‘56 with wife, Duddie dent and CEO of St. Andrews Christmas 2009 Hospital and Healthcare Center. Her list of accomplishments includes: Margaret Chase Smith Quality award; Patient and/or residents’ satisfaction ratings consistently at or above 90 percent; Avatar recognition (a company that surveys hospital patients) five straight years for “meeting or exceeding patient expectation;” she helped to create a supportive team oriented culture for physicians and employees; and, in 2007, she took the previous year’s operating loss and turned it into an operating profit. I know the accomplishments that Peggy is most proud of are her involvement with the expansion of services within the St. Andrews campus such as the Palliative Care program, long-term care services/ St. Andrews Village, which includes an Alzheimers program, assisted living, independent living, registered home companion program, and an enhanced Home Health program. Scholarships have been created by the Lincoln County Healthcare Board of Trustees to honor former St. Andrews CEO Peggy Pinkham’s 30 years of service to the hospital. Peggy began her service at St. Andrews as a nurse. The scholarships, which have a value of approximately $5,000 each, lower financial barriers to a career in nursing for students at the new school, a collaborative effort of Central Maine Community College in Auburn, Miles and St. Andrews hospitals. Peggy has lived the motto, “What you are should not stand in the way of what you want to be.” Her sisters, Martha and I, and our families, in addition to her family, husband I.J., her sons, Matthew and Timothy to say nothing of a lot of her friends are very proud of her. I am sure community members of Boothbay are happy that the Pinkham family live there as each one gives much to the community. Russ ‘63 and Margie Smith Record ‘66 are starting a new phase of their lives-retirement! Russ retired in 2003 from the U. S. Forest Service and Margie retired in June of 2009 from Arlington Memorial High School where she had taught for 30 years, mostly grades 7 & 8 science. As a celebration of Margie’s retirement, they gathered with family in June at Martha’s Vineyard. Photo above-daughter Jenn and husband Beau, Daija-12, Tyler-10, son-Jason, his wife-Jillian, Chloe-4 & Seth-17 months. After a busy summer of reunions, baseball games, gardening, wood-stacking, and more, Russ & Margie spent 3 weeks exploring four of the Hawaiian Islands (Oahu, Kauai, Maui, & Hawaii) as a celebration of their 40 years of marriage. Both continue to be active in their church and community. Margie loved teaching, but as she replied to one of her former students, “I am enjoying the adventures of retirement, too.” They enjoy having time to attend grandchildren’s events, visit family & friends, explore their interests, and whatever “adventures” come their way. In celebration of their 45th reunion Margaret Hatch Eastman ‘64 put together a scrapbook. It includes photos from the 4 yrs. she was at FA, newspaper articles that were in the possession of Bobby Hatch ‘64 and Jimmy Oliver ‘64. and snapshots that cover all of the reunions for the class of 1964, starting with their fifth. Once this was compiled Jimmy Oliver ‘64 put together a slide show and they had it running throughout their gathering. The class of 1964 wish to thank Roy Andrews ‘56 for the use of the Fiber building at the fairgrounds and to Dick Thompson ‘61 for the use of his monitor. The class has copies of the “Class Prophecy”, but would like to find the “Class Will” and the “Class History”. A special thanks to the committee for their time and effort on this reunion: Kay Griffin Cossette ‘64, Jim Oliver ‘64, Bobby Hatch ‘64, Joyce Fox Kennett ‘64, Ronald (Butch) Sanborn ‘64 and Margaret Hatch Eastman ‘64. A special thanks to Mel Eastman ‘61 for making replicas of the “outhouse” to use as centerpieces and then they were presented to the little devils that instigated the “new boys dorm” incident. For those not in the know on this little caper Dick Snow ‘64, Bob Hatch ‘64, Butch Sanborn ‘64, Ray Huntress ‘64 and Murray Lord ‘64 decided to place a smoke house on the front lawn of the Headmasters House (1963Mr. Richards) in the middle of the night. The boys had painted on the front “Boys New Dorm”. It had the shape and look of an old “outhouse”. Needless to say by the next morning, before the start of school the “outhouse” had been moved to the side drive of the Gibson gym. Maintenance ??? At this time classmates took photos for posterity with Butch and Dick shaking hands over a “job well done”. The class has always held this as one of their fondest memories. We were very pleased to see first timers to reunion- Pat Taylor Knotts ‘64 who says “ I have retired and am loving it! Very happy to have time to do lots of stuff and meet old acquaintances from FA.” and Peter Eastman ‘64 who hasn’t decided what he wanted to be when he grows up so he retired in 2008 and is enjoying time with his wife Sue and 15 yearold-son Brendan. He hopes to see all his classmates at their 50th reunion. Attending after many absent years was Steve Geno ‘64, driving from Lee, Maine and arriving in his cool street rod. Bobby Hatch ‘64 and wife Ann arrived in his ’57 convertible; between the stories he shared that day and his car it was like being back at school. Then Royce Rankin ‘64 and wife Cindy arrived in a beautiful red corvette. Royce says he is still enjoying his job at Nashua airport. Joyce Fox Kennett ‘64 is still at Memorial Hospital after 35 years and enjoying her grandchildren. Arnold Pendexter ‘64 (Arnie or Sunny) is still working but is getting ready to retire. He and wife, Sandy, are enjoying the grandchildren, getting away to their camp and traveling all over the USA. Ron Colter ‘64 couldn’t make it to reunion but called and said he would see the class at their 50th reunion. Carl Perry ‘64 and Patsy stay busy and one big event for them was the wedding of their daughter this last fall. Kay Griffin Cossette ‘64 says to “Keep on the light side and enjoy family and friends.” Looking forward to seeing classmates at their 50th. Jimmy Oliver ‘64 believes they had 45 years of storytelling during their gathering and since Dick Snow ‘64 couldn’t make it Jimmy Oliver ‘64 thinks Bob Hatch ‘64 took over as the storyteller this year. Dick Snow ‘64 and wife Maryann were missed at reunion but he was called out on FEMA business. When you get the call you go when and where you’re needed. However Margaret Hatch Eastman ‘64 did mail Dick Snow ‘64 his “outhouse” centerpiece”. The first week of September Barbara Libby Altraum ‘64 was in town and she joined Kay Griffin Cossette ‘64, Judy Reynolds DeMille ‘64 and Margaret Hatch Eastman ‘64 for lunch. It was a nice visit with Barbie then she and Kay Griffin Cossette ‘64 went to see Jimmy Oliver ‘64. who had to work that day. Barbara Libby Altraum ‘64 was able to visit with Arnold Pendexter ‘64 earlier in the summer. Margaret Hatch Eastman ‘64 and Melvin Eastman ‘61 are retired and spend time traveling but also attend many sports events at FA. They have four grandchildren at the academy and they are involved in wrestling, girl’s varsity basketball, varsity softball and Ormie McAllister ‘64 with sons-Gordon ‘00, Duane ‘02 and Michael ‘88; Michael with wifethe cheering squad. He was born in Bridgton, a son of Bernard and Mildred Drowns Hutchins and attended local schools. He was employed by Forest Industries in Fryeburg for over 20 years. Excerpted from Syed Mustafa Hussein’s ‘02 Commencement Speech delivered June 9, 2002 - “For most of us this day is a day of celebration and freedom from studying, at least for a while, but for me this is the day when I have to say those two words of GOOD BYE to the people with whom I have spent my two precious years, people with who I have shared my dreams, the girl whom I have loved with all my heart and the people who have helped to make me who I am. The bonds of relationships get so strong in so short an amount of time at the Academy, that it makes separation harder and harder every day. I have met a lot of people in my life and have been involved in many relationships. At the Academy the name of the relationship is not what counts, but the bond that you make is important. To have good relationships you need to have good people and it is because of the huge diversity and the joint population of day and dorm students here that I was successful in finding good relationships. I am one of the lucky students who have had the chance to make friends with both day and dorm students.”
