PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

THE

Rtn. Santosh Shetye President Because of our networks, which span the globe; our community presence, which allows us to see what's most needed; and our expertise, which encompasses countless skills and professions, we're able to serve in a manner that has no equal. And we're able to Be the Inspiration as we help those who need us most. - Barry Rassin

A

s we begin the last quarter of the Rotary Year, one wonders how the time has passed so quickly. To finish the year on a strong note of fellowship among members, we will endeavour to serve the community through various projects. Because nothing creates fellowship more than working together with other members of club. Last week, our club's Global Grant Project to provide Hospital Furniture & Medical equipment to DilasaCentre for Terminally ill, has been approved to receive a grant of $37,847 from The Rotary Foundation. Thanks to efforts of Rtn Manohar Kamat, Rtn Bhupesh Shah & PDG Rtn Dr Vinaykumar Pai Raikar, the team was able to collect project & funding information, put it in right perspective in the application and clarify on the queries raised by appraisal committee of Rotary International. We were also ably guided by DG Rtn Ravikiran Kulkarni & PDG Rtn Vinay Kulkarni during the project appraisal. In coming weeks, led by our TRF Chairperson Rtn Bhupesh Shah, we will focus on raising our club's contribution for the Global Grant project. Our international partners in this project are Rotary Club of Cascavel-Paz, Brazil. Recently we learnt about a global grant project in Maternal & Child Health being implemented in Brazil with the help of Rotarians in Japan. This project has dramatically increased the capacity of an overstretched neonatal intensive care unit. New incubators, monitors, and other equipment have enabled the local hospital to save many more babies' lives each year. As we reflect on this project, we realise that it is this very wonderful world of Rotary, that Rotarians in Japan help Rotarians in Brazil, who in turn help Rotarians in India for making this world “a better place to live.

Rotary clubs blanket Brazil with polio and measles vaccinations Members help reverse trend of plummeting immunizations by reaching 11 million children -By Luiz Renato Dantas

R

otary clubs in Brazil mobilized to help stave off a potential polio outbreak after dangerously low vaccination rates were reported by health officials last year. More than 11 million Brazilian children were inoculated during a massive two-month vaccination campaign, reversing a trend of plummeting immunization coverage. Brazil Rotary clubs held End Polio Now vaccination festivals, which included food, entertainment, local celebrities, games. The government said more than 300 cities in the country had low rates of vaccination against diseases such as influenza, measles, and polio. The Ministry of Health called the situation “extremely serious. Measles were spreading in an outbreak that eventually sickened more than 1,500 people in Brazil. Health officials worried that poliovirus could also reemerge. Brazil's massive national immunization campaign from 6 August to 28 September aimed to vaccinate at least 95 percent of children ages one to five. The measles cases were concentrated in the northern

states where thousands of Venezuelan refugees have crossed the border to escape economic and political hardships. Many haven't been immunized, because Venezuela's health system is in crisis. Rotary leaders in Brazil found the possibility that poliovirus could resurge frightening, said Marcelo Haick, a regional coordinator for Rotary's End Polio Now initiative. They knew they had to help health workers reach the millions of children who might be vulnerable to the paralyzing disease. “The campaign was a success,” says Haick, a member of the Rotary Club of Santos-Praia in São Paulo state. “To our great surprise, clubs throughout the country responded in a way unlike anything we have ever seen.”

communities to announce the vaccination campaign. According to Haick, every Rotary club in the country participated in the campaign in some way. Clubs and districts promoted the vaccinations. A majority of clubs, says Haick, produced leaflets and distributed them at schools and at busy street crossings. Pedro Durão, another End Polio Now coordinator, says Rotary's awareness campaign was widespread. “It was a mass adoption,” he says. “It was gratifying to see the work done by the clubs and districts throughout Brazil. I've been in Rotary since 1991 and have never seen such great enthusiasm.”

More than 11 million children were vaccinated during the initiative, reaching the government's goal of 95 percent coverage, the target recommended by the World Health Organization.

Rotary leaders in Brazil hope the success of this effort can inspire clubs and districts, not only in their country but also in others that are at risk of a resurgence of polio, to continue to raise awareness of the importance of polio immunization and other potentially lifesaving vaccinations.

n partnership with Uday Rural Education Program, RCPMT has installed the bio gas plant at Lokvishwas Pratishthan School for Special Children at Dhavali. About 400 special children (hearing impaired, visually impaired & Mentally challenged) attend the school. These students are provided with mid-day meal. There are about 40 students who stay in the hostels. The Bio gas plant runs on the food waste which is generated in the canteen for these 400 students. The bio gas generated is used as cooking gas in the canteen. This has reduced the LPG gas consumption by half. The bio gas plant also generates sludge as a by-product. The school is in the process of making the sludge available to farmers as organic manure. Mr Nalin Sachdeva & Mrs Renu Sachdeva attended the handover event on behalf of Uday REP. N

amaste chai is a chain of cafes. It is owned by Sumaiya Sayed and Sayed Zaheer Abbas. It is situated in Rizvi Sadan opposite the new market complex along the INOX road in Panjim . It's a small cozy place with lots of red and yellow hues. The wall painted with a baba and namaste chai on it is witness to a lot of selfies clicked for instagram. Though the name has chai, this place boasts of a lot of mocktails, ice teas, lassi, shakes, kulfis and ice cream sundaes. The small bites available here are very delicious and makes you order for some more. Their zafrani chai is a favourite with most chai drinkers. The flavour of zafran is very powerful and makes you order for more. They serve different hot tea flavours like your adrak(ginger) tea, masala chat, Choco chai, lemon grass chat. The golden latte on the menu intrigued me which happens to be our turmeric milk . Any of you in need of a remedy for your coughs and cold can try the various herbal teas available. They even have a black tea, green tea, black lemon tea, ginger lemon tea, ginger honey tea and detox tea. Non tea lovers need not worry because they serve coffees too. Whether its capuchino, hot chocolate, filter coffee, mocha or latte. They have iced tea in various flavours whether its lemon mint, peach apricot, guava ginger, wild berry and passion fruit, you have a wide range to choose from. Their milk shakes I feel is the best whether its. Kesar bada, Oreo cheesecake, Chico hazelnut or rose gulkhand among a few flavours. The thick shakes are very good to beat the summer heat and refreshing and filling too. They have different flavours in ice cream and kulfis.

From Editor's Desk

THE

Rtn. Nazareth Vaz Editor Rotarians the world over with the help of Global Grants have tried to prevent maternal and infant deaths by providing the necessary equipments in neonatal care units in the hospitals, provided logistic support and even provided midwifery training in remote areas.

A

mother and a child together represents the face of humanity. A candid picture of both together reflects the conditions around her along with the measure of comfort in her existence. It is an undeniable and tragic statistic that with all the logistics and vast innovations in the medical field every two minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman dies from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth putting to risk and babies whose chances of survival are bleak. In the words of RI President Rtn Barry Raisin “ I've also met people who are devoting themselves to helping mothers and children — and because of them, I'm hopeful. And because many of those people are Rotarians, I'm also proud. April is Maternal and Child Health Month in Rotary, so it's a perfect time to tell you about some things Rotarians are doing that will make you proud too”. Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. While motherhood is often a positive and fulfilling experience, for too many women it is associated with suffering, ill-health and even death. Rotarians the world over with the help of Global Grants have tried to prevent maternal and infant deaths by providing the necessary equipments in neonatal care units in the hospitals, provided logistic support and even provided midwifery training in remote areas. India's maternal mortality rate reduced from 212 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2007 to 167 deaths in 2013. 20 per cent of these deaths in women occur in India. In 2016, India's infant mortality rate was 44 per 1,000 live births. In 2017, sex-specific under-five mortality rate was 39 in 1,000 live births for male and 40 in 1,000 live births for females. The craze for boy child has caused female infanticide and there is a low percentage of girl childs compared to boys in such states. No doubt we have a huge responsibility as Rotarians to improve the maternal health and child care in our region and assist the community to reduce further the maternal and infant deaths .
