PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

THE

Rtn. Santosh Shetye President

The most valuable of all capital is that which is invested in human beings.

A

s we come closer to the Diwali holidays, a festive mood sets in. The ramp up begins with Navratri …. The very traditional “Makars” in temples & the Dandiya nights. Not to be left behind, Mid-towners too organised a Dandiya Nite which turned out to be very enjoyable evening replete with music & food. The very entertaining Dandiya Nite was meticulously organised by Rtn Yatin Parekh, Rtn Manoj Caculo with support from Ann Rehana Haroon, Ann Lata Parekh & Ann Swati Shetye. The overwhelming participation showed why RCPMT is one of the most vibrant clubs in the District. Diwali is that time of the year when Indians celebrate the victory of Good over Evil and Truth over Falsity that brings in Light over Darkness. Children, specially in Goa look forward to the “Narkasur vadh” that happens in the early hours of Narak Chaturdas. Of course, there is more joy in the build-up to “Narkasur vadh”, i.e. Making of Narakasur! Even in this era of digital games, Narkasur has retained his aura over the children and one can still see the groups of children in street corners assembling the Narkasur. We at Rotary have many moments of Joy when our actions result in bringing “light over darkness”. One such action in coming days will be Joy of Giving, wherein we will be distributing the clothes collected from MidTowners to the needy. The project has been coordinated by Rtn Prakash Kapadia, Director Community Services. With Diwali holidays, comes the annual overseas family tour, a tradition started at Mid-Town. As you are all aware, our tour this year will take us to exotic cities of Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Salzburg & Krakow. Rtn Bhupesh Shah has spared no efforts to ensure that the tour is covering all the major attractions yet not hectic. The fellowship enjoyed on these tours where the families will travel in luxury coach, remains to be experienced to believe. So Rotarians, Anns & Annettes, have a great festive season & Happy Diwali.

Best Wishes From: A. R.CONSTRUCTIONS, WRD CONTRACTORS, SANQUELIM-GOA

the Beaches. Yes, Goa has been

projected as a “beachy tourist destination. But there's more to Goa than one would know. There are numerous hidden places in Goa that remain concealed in its hip streets and verdant nature scapes just waiting to be explored. If you wish to experience the untouched, unspoilt, rather pristine version of this coastal beauty, then you must head to these unexplored, yet outright divine places to visit in Goa and feel the beating pulses of Goa We- Samah, Karan, Kunal, Sweta & myself have begun our explorations into these hidden attractions that we ourselves never knew existed in Goa. Curdi was one such exploration. The Salaulim Dam project was envisioned by Goa's first Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar in 1965. In 1975's when the Salaulim dam was built it submerged the villages of Kurdi and Kurpem in Sanguem Taluka. Most of the villagers were into agriculture and farming, the then Government compensated the families. The construction of Salaulim dam began around

1975-1976. As a few areas of the village started submerging, the affected families started migrating to the land that they were allotted at Vaade and Valkini. The village of Kurdi, with exception of Talsai area, and half of Kurpem is completely submerged from the months of June to mid April. It starts drying up in the heat of mid April and lasts until May or mid June. Shree Someshwar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in the village of Kurdi is the only structure that still remains intact. Church was completely demolished and chapel was built on the hill later so people can visit again to pray. The temple stone Nandi along with other idols from Someshwar temple were moved to Valkini colony. Someshwar Utsav and Feast at the newly built Chapel is celebrated once a year in the month of May. Even today, in summers Kurdi and Kurpem have beautiful valleys with green mountainous views. The Curdi Village can be visited only in the month of May, rest all other months this village is surrounded by water. Traces of village infrastructure mostly belonging to the Portuguese era are still visible. Remains provide information on the village life. We visited Curdi Village on Sunday (3rd June 2018). It's was an amazing drive to the village and the place is just so beautiful. A must-see next season. Please add that to your bucket list.

D

iwali, the Festival of Lights has lit up the November skies with hope and promise. A promise that the darkness in the form of illiteracy, poverty and gloom around us will fade away. To usher in hope around us and around the world, we as Rotarians have to cheerfully give and give to Rotary Foundation. Giving is personal. The Rotary Foundation creates heroes out of Rotarians and people, who through their contributions provide for need base projects on a big scale which usher in a better way of life to millions of people around the world. The projects powered by the Rotary Foundation worldwide have offered solutions to the many problems humanity faces The Safe Water and Sanitation Projects, ensure that children the world over no longer die of water borne diseases. The water conservation and Water harvesting Projects ensure that women do not have to travel 78kms daily to fetch water and have access to clean drinking water. The education based projects empower children to learn and the health care projects, the world over help in Disease Prevention and Cure. Truly, Rotary Foundations is the conduit, through which we help humanity through our support of the Annual Programs fund and Every Rotarian, Every year. In the year 1984-85, when the Polio Plus program was launched, Rotary was recognized as a non Government member of WHO. The program over the years apart from raising millions of dollars for providing vaccines has seen hundreds and thousands of Rotarians dedicating time to immunize children in billions. Not only has the program captured the imagination of Rotarians and others everywhere including Governments, but today, India is Polio free and the world is on the verge of being free from the scourge of Polio. Let us by our action of giving, provide solace and hope to the suffering humanity and cast away darkness and gloom, so that the joy of being a gift to those in need, lights up our lives and those whom we choose to serve.
