PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Rotarian Friends, As the scorching Goan summer heat gives way to the heavens opening up to usher in the monsoon season, it also signals the change in the Rotary season where the baton is passed on to the new President and his team on 1st July, the first day of the new Rotary year. As I sit to write my final communication as President of the Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown it is pouring cats and dogs outside on a cool monsoon evening late June. It is as if it is reminding me that my time as President is up. I do believe that the 2 cornerstones for a successful Rotary Club are weaved around firstly the family of Rotary consisting of its members, families of members, partners in service and secondly the difference it makes to the local community around. These were the two guiding principles that we kept before us as we went about our Rotary business over the course of the past 12 months. This last issue of Dream captures in a nutshell a rainbow of activities carried out for Rotary year 2017-18 across all the five service avenues.

RTN. ASHISH PRABHU VERLEKAR Club President

Before we started the Rotary year 2017-18 given that the RI theme was “Rotary Making a difference” and since the subject of children is close to my heart I was clear in my mind that the signature project for the year had to be one which has a significant impact in the lives of young kids. When we deliberated and discussed ideas we decided on Rotary international project focused on India; WASH in Schools (WinS) which tackles water, hygiene and sanitation in schools and which also aligned with our Prime Ministers initiative of Swach Bharat. What followed was an extensive process of selecting schools through the process of survey using the RI/UNICEF survey form, doing Need assessment, Gap analysis, discussions with Managements of schools and thereafter implementing WinS in the selected schools. 5 areas were covered under WinS; construction/repairs/renovation of toilet blocks separately for boys and girls, Safe drinking water facilities with maintenance contract for 3 years, Provision of multiple hand wash stations with soap, Menstrual hygiene management by way of Vending machines and incinerator for disposing and orienting of teachers and training of students towards use and upkeep of these facilities. The WinS journey took us across the State of Goa visiting schools in towns and in villages assessing toilets, water facilities for drinking and hand wash etc. It was an eye opener and a learning experience for us too. We launched the project on our Installation day on 1st July 2017 at the hands of Chief Minister of Goa Shri Manohar Parrikar. Shri Parrikar was very supportive of this initiative and infact made a mention of

JUNE 2018 | PG 5

our WinS project on the floor of the Goa assembly when talking about education in schools. Shri Manohar Parrikar inaugurated the first completed WinS school in November at Panaji followed by Honorable Governor of Goa Mrs Mridula Sinha inaugurating the second school in rural Priol. Any project of this magnitude required funding. But amazingly within one week and with the first 10 donors we met we managed to raise the entire funding required for this project. And today thanks to their backing and faith in us, we have executed this project in 26 schools (including 6 special children schools) across Goa touching the lives and bringing a smile to the faces of over 10000 school children and counting‌. I believe that if we want real behavioral change to happen then we have to catch them young; targeting children at schools though a project like WinS only can bring effective long term change. Cleanliness, hygiene, sanitation has to start with children at school. If we are going to achieve our dream of Swach Bharat it has to start with Swach Schools. Our effort this year was towards that goal. Besides the focus on Swachatta through WinS we also focused on our 3 other Permanent projects; Sudharta, Saksharta and Sahayta during the year. All our permanent projects have CHILDREN as the central theme. As the great Nelson Mandela remarked 'There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children'. I take this opportunity to thank each and every member of my Club and my board for their unstinted support and guidance throughout the Rotary year. The Club Secretary Mahesh Patil has been a pillar of strength to me throughout the year. More than just the Club Secretary, he has been my sounding board, my counsel, and an excellent foil to me. Besides he has been at the core of the WinS project and given his professional expertise in the area his inputs have been most valuable in the success of the project. We at Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown celebrated two decades of our existence this year. I am sure we will continue to bond in the spirit of friendship and at the same time make a difference in our local community through meaningful projects in the years to come. Thanking you, Yours in Rotary,

Rtn. Ashish V. Prabhu Verlekar

SWACHHTA - WASH IN SCHOOLS (WinS) Signature Project of Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown for 2017-18 The WinS Project was launched at the hands of Honourable Chief Minister of Goa Shri. Manohar Parrikar at the Installation function of our Club on 1st July, 2017 at Hotel Mandovi.

and sanitation. Infact this also forms an integral part of Prime Ministers initiative for Swachh Bharat.

Shri Parrikar complimented Rotarians of Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown for taking up the Swachh Bharat initiative through WINS and expressed willingness of the Goa Govt. to associate with Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown to scale up with the number of schools to be covered under this project.

Objective: Waterborne diseases cause children to be sick resulting in high absentee rate in schools thus creating education and literacy issues. It is estimated that worldwide 272 million school days are lost each year due to WASH related issues.

Background:

It is also a serious health issue since water borne diseases specially worm infection, impair, physical development and reduce cognitive development among school going children. Infect diarrhoea is a leading cause of mortality among children.

WinS stands for Wash in Schools. WASH refers to Water, Sanitation, Hygiene. This is a Rotary International(RI) focus project for India which Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown executed in rural and urban schools in the State of Goa. Out of 6 areas of focus for Rotary International, 2 of them viz Basic education & literacy and Water & sanitation are covered under WinS project. The WinS project is not just a focus area for RI but also for UNICEF and Government of India through the HRD Ministry for Panchayati Raj, drinking water

The above factors also increase the cost of health care and education thus having economic implications. Thus, our aim through the WinS project is to improve school attendance and education outcome through provisions of sustainable WASH services and education initiative in identified rural and urban school in Goa.

JUNE 2018 | PG 8 WASH aspects that were identified and implemented Our club identified schools for this project based on 'Need assessment'. Don Bosco College; Department of Social welfare affiliated to Goa University carried out the Need assessment for the shortlisted schools based on the Baseline Survey Format issued by UNICEF along with RI. SUDHARTA Sudharta: Looking Back‌.. It has been 20 long years since we launched the project of Corrective Surgeries for disabled children. All these years have been very satisfying and fulfilling in terms of our achievements. We have been able to make a positive change in the lives of all people that we have been fortunate to treat. It was recently that we realized the magnitude of the good work we have been undertaking, when a bhel puri vendor at Miramar came and greeted me. He said thanks to our efforts his daughter is now happily married and is in the family way. But for our surgical feats, no one would come forth and marry a girl with deformed legs.

RTN. DR. DEEP BHANDARE Co-ordinator

On ruminating I realised that many more girls whom we had operated are now well settled in their families. Similarly there are a number of boys and girls who are now doctors, lawyers and graduates. They all are gainfully employed and are supporting themselves and their families. It was a revelation to me that few hours of the surgical time and expertise of the team with back up by the Rotarians and The Rotary Foundation has resulted in making so many unfortunates to be independent members of the society. This project has been highly appreciated in the Rotary District and the Rotary International because it is active for last 20 years and has benefitted hundreds of disabled children from poor socio economic background. They would not be able to afford the treatment if not for our project. I have received a number of award and recognition from the governments of Goa, government of India, Rotary international, Giants International, I n d i a n M e d i c a l Association, and Indian Orthopedic Association. However the best recognition comes from the treated patients and their families. During the Rotary year 2017-18 successfull disabilities corrective surgeries were carried out on seven needy children from financially poor backgrounds giving them a new lease of life.

SAHAYTA Sahayata Home Nursing School

Care

With world’s largest population of youth residing in India, it is indeed very challenging to create right kind of skills among youth to get gainfully employed. The challenge is even more accentuated in case of weaker sections of community and women with limited educational qualifications. This has created a large number of youth (specially girls) in rural areas who are bereft of high school education & are unemployed due to unavailability of opportunities. As a result they continue to earn low income & live in poverty.

RTN. SANTOSH SHETYE Co-ordinator

On the other hand, with economic development, past few decades has witnessed an increase in the life expectancy of the average Indian to more than 66 years. There are now more than 100 million people above the age of 60 years in India. Very often, there are cases of elders at home who need to be attended to due to health problems or even to do their daily chores. Simultaneously with emergence of nuclear & double income families, number of family members in a home has reduced. Much as the earning members of the family would like to attend to their elder family members, they are unable to do so due to work commitments. As a result, the aged parents of these family members are not able to get sufficient care at home. Also there is a growing number of old age centres with perennial shortage of home care nursing attendants. Therefore, there is a mounting need of trained and professional care givers who would be able to assist elders at home or old age centres in the performance of their day to day functions. It is with these objectives in mind that RCPMT joined hands with Matruchhaya Trust to start a 6 month sandwich program for Home Care Nursing Attendants. Matruchhaya’s Sahayata Home care Nursing School is located at Kalapur, Goa. It conducts a 6 month duration course which includes 3 months of practical training at Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital at Bambolim.

JUNE 2018 | PG 23

The school has its own modern classroom for training 20 youth, equipped with contemporary nursing apparatus. There is a library on the premises. As this is a residential course, there are separate boarding & hostel facilities for girls & boys with appropriate security. The hostel has a full time Warden who resides on the premises.

All the expenses towards tuition, hostel & boarding are borne by school. The students are also provided with free uniforms, personal hygiene products, stationary & reimbursement of travel cost to visit their homes periodically. The school operates as 100% charity school. Minimum qualifications to join the school are 8 Standard pass. The Curriculum includes Home Care Nursing subjects, Personal Hygiene, Communication Skills, Personal Finance, Self Defense martial arts, Safety, Stress Management & Yoga. More than 270 hours of tuition in Home Care Nursing & 200 hours of other education is provided for making the students empowered citizens. The faculty consists of qualified Nurses, eminent Doctors & professionals. There is a full time School Administrator who coordinates activities of school. Sahayata Home care Nursing School has been in Operation since January2015. Every six months a batch of upto 20 Home Care Attendants successfully complete the course and are gainfully employed. For the year 2017-18, two batches were conducted. 6th Batch consisting of 18 students passed in December 2017. All the students in the batch were girls. The batch began on 3 July 2017 and graduated on 16 January 2018. The certification ceremony was presided by Shri

Siddharth Kuncoliencar, Chairman of EDC Ltd. The chief guest for the event was Mr Luis Fernandes, Principal, Govt Polytechnic – Panaji. The 7th batch of Sahayata started on 3rd January 2018 & completed on 15th June 2018, The batch consisted of 11 girl students. The entire expenses of 6th & 7th batch were borne by Nanu Enterprises as part of their CSR inititiative. The club thanks Mr Pravas Naik for supporting the school. The graduation ceremony of 7th batch & commencement of 8th batch has been planned on 6th July 2018. Reputed private equity & investment bankers, M/s Northern Arc –Chennai have provided full financial support for batches 8 to 10 as a part of CSR initiative. Similarly Automobile Corporation of Goa Ltd, have provided financial support for 5 girl students in 8th batch. The 8th batch consists of 19 girls and 1 boy, totaling 20 students. To date Sahayata has trained 81home care attendants. All the practicing home care attendants are gainfully employed in Goa as also other parts of India.

MISSION RABIES Rotary Joins in to Eliminate 'Rabies’ “Mission Rabies” Mission Rabies is a Charity which was founded in 2013 with one aim, eliminate Rabies. Over 99% of human rabies cases are caused by an infected dog bite. Once symptoms of the disease develop, it is always fatal. Every year, millions of healthy dogs are inhumanely killed for fear of this deadly disease. However, this doesn't halt the spread of rabies, which causes the deaths of around 59,000 people a year – the majority of which are children under 15. Mission Rabies is going to change that.

RTN. MILIND SHANKHWALKER Co-ordinator Primay Host Contact, Global Grant Project Elimination of Canine and Human Rabies in Goa.

Science shows that the most effective long-term Rabies control strategy is through vaccination of dogs in endemic areas. Rabies is 100% preventable. Mission Rabies is working to prevent needless deaths from this devastating disease. Mission Rabies and Goa MR set themselves a challenge - make Goa a Rabies free state! Bordered by sea to the East and jungle to the North, South and West, the movement of dogs into and out of the state is limited, making it the perfect location for a state-wide vaccination campaign. In 2014 MR sterilised 20400 dogs across Goa in a 6 month long campaign. By creating a more stable and healthier dog population, They lay the ground work for incredible future rabies-combating results. Developing a strategy to cover all 12 talukas of Goa in a year, They meticulously mapped out every catching area, trained even more dog catching teams, recruited a project coordinator and set to work. In September, with 20 international volunteers back for another month-long mass drive, allowed them to complete one of the most densely populated of Goas’ talukas in just 4 weeks!

JUNE 2018 | PG 25

The end of 2016 brought about the start of a Mission Rabies and Worldwide Veterinary Service ( “ WVS” ) partnership in Goa. The Goa HICKs International Training Centre was constructed in the North Goa to build upon the work started by Mission Rabies in 2014. MR is now covering entire Goa with their catching teams working alongside the WVS sterilisation teams. MR also has their very own rabies laboratory in Panjim enabling their rapid response team to get a fast diagnosis from every dog they pick up. Having already reached 92000 vaccinations, 2017 is set to become another record breaking year in India! Mission Rabies and Rotary To achive the objective of Rabies free Goa, Rotary has associated with Mission Rabies through Global Grant from The Rotary International, Rotary has provided Mission rabies better mobality, Three Bolero vehicles, 2 of which are being used by the vaccination teams to enable them to travel around the state and a third vehicle acts as an animal surveillance vehicle to transport dogs with suspected rabies to a central facility for observation and evaluation. The Grant has also provided two Activa scooters for the pre & post vaccination surveyors. Mobility is the main thrust of this project. earlier MR teams hired vehicles, which was expensive and an impedement to react and rapidly respond to any potential outbreaks Rotary Grant vehicles are seen in use by Mission Rabies on the Goan Roads.

The Rotary Grant also provides for operational costs during project duration such as Driver salaries, Maintainance and fuel for 18 months. Mission Rabies will own these vehicles at the end of the project. It has been assured that the project will continue to be run with the help of coperating organisations post Rotary Grant duration. The Project is being monitored by our Host club through monthly Progress reports from Mission Rabies, site visits, Interaction with MR Teams and Regular Presentations at weekly meetings by Dr.Murugan Appupillai, Director Mission Rabies for Goa All Rotary Clubs of Goa will also be approched to support Mission Rabies in educational outreach to the schoolchildren, especially those in primary schools. Rotary Clubs will also increase rabies awareness with about 1000 children join their biannual march. Mr. Abhay Nagar recommended that people must invest across all asset classes consisting of gold, real estate, fixed deposits. However, he said that to create wealth one should invest in equity. The key attributes for creating wealth through equity is that the long term investments are free from tax, they beat the inflation and underlying these investments is the ownership or businesses which keep on generating returns and thus augment the value of your investment. He further suggested that instead of investing on tips one can leave the management of the assets to professional fund managers; hence the case for mutual fund investing. Selection of the right funds and patience are the attributes which help in creation of wealth. The function ended with networking dinner.
