PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

RTN. YATIN PAREKH 2020-21 LET ROTARY GROW… As I start this momentous journey of my life, as President of our prestigious club for the year 2020-21, dark clouds and heavy rains seem to be everywhere! Literally and metaphorically, in the form of the COVID 19 pandemic. Nevertheless, we should remember, 'After every storm, the sun always shines'.

Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen. – Michael Jordan

Our theme for this year is “Rotary Opens Opportunities”. The pandemic crisis has opened an opportunity for us to change and adapt. It is up to us to remake Rotary for these new times. It's important for us to be innovative, think out of the box, find new prospects, and be more aligned with the Rotary core values. The world needs Rotary now more than ever. Let us together, make a difference. Few months back when I was eager to take over as Club President, I had a lot of aspirational projects planned, apart from our regular ones. Now, even though there might be a few constraints, I'm determined and not deterred. I truly believe 'Individually we are one drop, together we are an ocean'. Let us all together, wholeheartedly, bring in fresh energy by roping in new ideas, to take our club to greater heights. In these trying times, it is innovation and collaboration that result in any and every triumph. Solidarity is the key to success. SAB KA SAATH, CLUB KA VIKAAS

R.I. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

RTN. KNAACK HOLGER 2020-21 MOVING ROTARY FORWARD The year 2020 has brought monumental changes that have already included a global pandemic and a renewed call for social justice. We are reminded that we live in a constantly changing world, and Rotary is a reflection of that world. We must be ready to listen and adapt, always drawing upon our core values of service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership. If we live these values and apply The Four-Way Test to all aspects of our lives, we will be prepared to lead at all times.

with them, and promote them to one another and to our communities. We all agree that we need to grow Rotary, but sometimes we can get caught up in the numbers game and lose sight of the bigger picture. After all, an increase in membership is meaningless if next year, those new members leave our clubs. Let's grow Rotary sustainably. Rotary's flexible options for participation will engage members and show the community how we're different from any other club. Let's celebrate that Rotary is now less about rules and more about joining together in a variety of ways besides traditional meetings.

I am proud of how we have proven our ability to adapt. Faced with a pandemic, Rotary has not stopped. We moved meetings online and found new ways to serve. We turned the canceled 2020 Rotary International Convention in Honolulu into our first virtual convention. Each week, we are proving that Rotary is a flexible gathering that happens anywhere — in traditional meetings, on cellphones, and on computers. Rotary offers a way to connect for everyone who wants to, at any time, and will continue to do so.

I recommend that each club hold an annual strategy meeting to ask and honestly answer if we are doing all we can for our members and if our club reflects the community we serve. We are taking this approach at the international level, too. I am proud that six women are serving with me on the RI Board of Directors this year, the most we have ever had. Let's keep Rotary moving in this direction at every level. We need more perspectives, more diversity, for Rotary to thrive.

Some have even told me that they enjoy Rotary's mix of online and in-person meetings more now than before! How can we build on this momentum and seize the opportunity to embrace change so that Rotary keeps thriving?

It's fascinating to imagine how we will find new ways to adapt and stay nimble this year and beyond. But I am also inspired about what hasn't changed and never will in Rotary: the friendships, the networking, the ethics, and the service. Indeed, these are the values that make Rotary attractive to all.

For me, supporting new types of clubs is key. They are no longer just experiments but a real part of Rotary today. In addition to traditional clubs, we have e-clubs, Rotaract clubs, cause-based clubs, and passport clubs. These help make Rotary more inclusive, more flexible, and more attractive to new members. Visit these clubs, exchange ideas and partner

As Rotary's founder, Paul Harris, said, we have to be revolutionary from time to time. Now is such a time. Rotary Opens Opportunities — countless ones — for us to embrace change that will strengthen us even as we remain true to our core values.

ROTARY and ART OF LIVING to work together for World Peace Peace was the central topic of discussion at the “ Reinventing, Service and Peace for Universal Oneness” post-pandemic webinar dialogue between RIPN Shekhar Mehta and Spiritual Guru Shri Shri Ravi Shankar. Mehta suggested that Art of Living Foundation could partner with Rotary to work for global peace, and appreciated the Foundation's outreach “ From Kashmir in India, to Colombia, Iraq and Syria: your programme have had an impact on the people who were involved in armed conflict to pursue the path of peace”, he said. Briefing Ravi Shankar on Rotary's Peace Fellowship Programmes, he suggested that Foundation and Rotary's peace programmes , that have already produced 1400 peace warriors should work together. “We will definitely come together to make the world more peaceful and a happy place”, replied Shri Shri Ravi Shankar. He expressed his desire to work with the youth wing- Rotaract. Complimenting him on his ability to motivate the youth, Mehta said that though he had never met him in person, “ I am amazed and deeply impressed at how you inspire the youth to practice Peace”. Drawing parallels between Rotary and the Foundation, he added “ I find a synergy in what both our organizations are doing. Both promote integrity, peace, goodwill and service”. Ravi Shankar said that the word service comes from

the Sanskrit word “seva”.He stated that he has been familiar with Rotary since his youth and that Rotary had done great service in the world. “From building bus stops in nrural villages to uniting people across the world, you are a model of a world community” he said. Mehta briefed Ravi Shankar about Rotary's work in mental health during the lockdown. The spiritual Leader appreciated the efforts and added “ Mental Health issues are going to be bigger than what we are facing now. In the lockdown, people are either getting into depression or becoming aggressive. On the one side there is anger and on the other, there is fear … for us to be a sane society, we will have to work together. “ He added that “Today eight lakh people are committing suicides globally. The whole world is looking at the east for a solution.” He suggested Yoga, meditation programmes and mental health activities. “ More than the disease, we have to deal with the fear of it, “ he added. He suggested that everybody should work together to have a healthy mind and free spirit during the lockdown. Mehta told him that The Rotary Foundation has given 150 global grants of $25,000 each towards Covid-19 relief activities. “ In India the Rotarians have given the PM CARES Fund $50 million and spent an equal amount in helping their local communities cope with the crisis”.

EMBRACING THE NEW NORMAL A pandemic may be defined as an epidemic occurring worldwide or over a very vast area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people. The world today is engulfed by the CORONA-19 Pandemic which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This outbreak was identified in 2019 in Wuhan, China and from there has spread around the world. The WHO declared a Public Health Emergency in January 2020 and a Pandemic on 11th March 2020. By now, we all may be familiar with the symptoms and the ways the virus is transmitted and human beings have learnt that change seems to be the only constant. The routines of people have been disrupted and many have lost jobs. Apart of a physical illness, the Pandemic has taken a toll of the mental health of many. Students all over seem to be left in a space where they are confused on how to move forward. Online classes seem to be the new normal today and yet they cannot replace the traditional classroom set up, where apart from learning, social interactions nourish lives.

However, adjusting in this situation is the only way to move forward in a manner that is healthy and brings about the growth of the students. Many students across the world may not have the luxury of the internet and these students may then need to rely on others who have the benefits needed for the smooth functioning of online mode of education. Through this article a small attempt is made to reach out to students all over so that they realise that they are free to feel the uncertainty and yet they can reach out if needed. • Nutrition: Every individual needs to maintain and

build up their immunity in order to fight disease. At such times it becomes all the more essential to eat foods rich in vitamins, proteins and minerals. A number of links are available to enhance Vitamin C in one's diet that acts as an antioxidant and helps to boost immunity. Having a balanced diet is essential to have a healthy mind and body. • Exercise: Although gyms and swimming pools are

not as safe as before, one must exercise on a regular basis. Variety of apps, Youtube channels etc. are available such as 'Yoga with Adrienne',

thoughts and emotions. • De-clutter for 5 minutes: You could choose a space

in your home (drawer/shelf) which you re-arrange. This helps to clear your mind as well and one remains focused. • Learn something new: Various online mediums are

there like SWAYAM, through which one can learn something new. Engage in Reading as it helps one learn so much more. • Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness for atleast few

minutes per day where you are totally aware of the NOW and you are aware of the information received by your senses. Apps available for the same: Insight Timer, Smiling Mind • Help: Helping others helps not only that person feel

good but helps you feel good too. Help class mates with notes or help those who do not have the required internet facilities.

RTN. SANDEEP NADKARNI 2020-21 Friends, This is my second foray as a Magazine Editor. During my first Rotary year in 2000, was asked by the then incoming President Rtn Vijay Hede to be his Mazine Editor. With boost from Rtn Vijay we started the Dream as a magazine. Over the years, the Magazine has evolved and has been one of the best ,readable and prized magazines in the District 3170. It is my proud priviledge to penn the Dream once again.

Great things are done by a series of small things brought together – Vincent Van Gogh

In this Pandemic of Covid-19, it would be my endeavor to evolve issue by issue and bring out a variety of information at your fingertips. Helen Keler said “ When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us”. It is our endeavour to utilize these open doors to spread rotary message. George Bernard Shaw said “ Life is not about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself. The Board of Rotary Club of Panaji Mid-Town is firmly in saddle with dynamic duo of Rtn Yatin Parekh as President and Rtn Rajiv Shirodkar as Secretary and his efficient Directors. President has already chaulked out his programmes and the implementation is excellent. I request all the Rotarians to contribute spontaneously to the Dream to make it interactive. We endeavour in change and there is a fantastic quote from the ageless Diva Marilyn Munroe “ Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and its better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
