PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

THE

Rtn. Santosh Shetye President In last 5 years I have been privileged to work in the club with Rotarians par excellence, who are not only leaders in their vocations, but also excellent human beings. In the course of these interactions, the club has given me many close friends. It is this value system & culture of our club which today makes us all cherish in being Mid-Towners.

M

y Dear Rotarians, Anns & Annettes. It is my humble privilege to be the President of Rotary Club of Panaji Mid-Town for 2018-19. At this juncture I would thank all the Mid-Towners for showing the con idence in me to lead the club & giving me the opportunity.

I was introduced to our club by PDG Rtn Dr Vinaykumar in 2013. In last 5 years I have been privileged to work in the club with Rotarians par excellence, who are not only leaders in their vocations, but also excellent human beings. In the course of these interactions, the club has given me many close friends. It is this value system & culture of our club which today makes us all cherish in being Mid-Towners. The Rotary Year 2017-18 has indeed been eventful with President Rtn Ashish & Secretary Rtn Mahesh providing the leadership with a host of initiatives. The conceptualization of the signature project WINS for year 2017-18, has been wonderful and equally backed up by fund raising & implementation. It is but natural that we will continue with this wonderful project for year 2018-19. Our key priorities for this year are: 1. Engage Mid-Towners & their families in enjoying Rotary activities 2. Leave a mark on community with our projects, events & club culture 3. Develop new Rotary Leaders at Mid-Town We will pursue these objectives though our club events as also permanent & signature projects: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Sahayata: Home Care Nursing School Saksharta: Education Support Program Sudharta: Physical Disability Corrective Program Swachhata: WINS- Rotary International's initiative in improving school infrastructure Events to further enhance fellowship & friendship among Mid-towners

Thanks to eorts of Mid-Towners , all above projects have been able to attract full inancial support for next year . So our priority in project implementation will be focus on timely delivery & quality. Our Director for Club Service, Rtn Manoj along with Fellowship Chairman Rtn Manohar has drawn up exciting events to keep you busy enjoying Club activities. While IPP Rtn Ashish has detailed plans on executing Swachhata project, Youth Service Director Rtn Dhruv has been working with Anns' team to develop new leaders & activities at our Interact Clubs. Club Secretary Rtn Gauresh has planned a calendar of events & will be giving advanced heads up to all Mid-Towners. This should help in planning personal priorities so that joy of participation in Club events is maximized. Once again, Thank You for your support in continuing to make RC Panaji Mid-Town a vibrant club.

BE THE INSPIRATION

THE

Rtn. Barry Rassin RI President We are a membership organization first. If we want to achieve the goals we've set for ourselves, we need to put membership first. All of us have a responsibility to take membership seriously, not only by inviting prospective members, but also by making sure new members are welcomed into clubs that offer them something of value.

A

well-known saying goes, "If you want to change the world, go home and love your family." That doesn't mean people should ignore the needs outside their own homes; instead, they should pay attention to the needs within.

It can be tempting, when our priority is service, to focus only on the things that look like service: the projects, the planning, the work that yields a visible bene it to those who need it. But to do that work effectively, we need to keep our own house in order. In Rotary, that means conducting ourselves in accordance with the principles of Rotary, treating others with respect, and following The Four-Way Test. It means maximizing our impact by planning carefully and stewarding our resources wisely. And it means looking after the long-term health of our organization by ensuring that our membership is strong, engaged, and healthy. Our membership has hovered around the same 1.2 million mark for 20 years. We aren't growing, and our membership is getting older. We have too many clubs that don't have the knowledge or motivation to have an impact: clubs that don't know what we're doing on a global level, clubs that don't know about our programs or our Foundation, that don't even know how to get involved. And with a membership that is still mostly male, we clearly aren't doing enough to become the organization of choice for women who are seeking to serve. We are a membership organization irst. If we want to achieve the goals we've set for ourselves, we need to put membership irst. All of us have a responsibility to take membership seriously, not only by inviting prospective members, but also by making sure new members are welcomed into clubs that offer them something of value. If you see someone walk into a meeting and hesitate, be sure that person has a place to sit and is part of the conversation. If you're enthusiastic about a Rotary program, make sure your club knows about it and knows how to get involved. If you see a Best Wishes From: need in your community, talk about it at this week's meeting. If we want to be part of an organization A. R.CONSTRUCTIONS, that's strong, that's active, that's having an impact – WRD CONTRACTORS, start at home, and Be the Inspiration in Rotary. SANQUELIM-GOA

Philippines -By Quincy Cahilig

I

n the calm blue waters of Lamon Bay lies a source of pride for local ishermen and a submerged salute to Rotary: an arti icial reef in the shape of a Rotary wheel.

The wheel has helped restore the local ishing industry, which was devastated by large-scale commercial ishing vessels that used dynamite, cyanide, and ine mesh nets from the late 1990s through the early 2000s. Fishing is considered the lifeblood of the area's coastal villages, including Balubad, Lubi, Talaba, and Kilait, and for years, village ishermen fought to protect the waters that fed their families. In 2005, the ishermen turned to the Rotary Club of Atimonan, Quezon Province, Philippines, for help. They decided to build an arti icial reef. The club partnered with the Rotary Club of Madera, California, USA, on a Rotary Foundation grant to help fund the project, which would cost more than $1 million. They built the reef in the shape of a Rotary wheel, which just happens to have plenty of surface area for coral to grow on and plenty of nooks for ish to shelter in. Made of steel-reinforced concrete, it's 600 meters from the coastline, measures about 4 meters tall and 21 meters wide (13 by 70 feet), and weighs several tons. Today, the wheel, touted as the biggest arti icial reef in the Philippines, is covered with coral and has withstood several typhoons. It attracts ish, including jacks, surgeon ish, mangrove red snappers, groupers, long inbanner ish, lounders, pompanos, bat ish, and barracudas, among other marine creatures.

RI ACTIVITIES AROUND WORLD “Before the reef, the ishermen were barely able to catch a kilo [2.2 pounds] of ish apiece,” says Oca Chua, past president of the Rotary Club of Atimonan and the project's chair. “Today they catch ish weighing up to 2 kilos apiece a day.” Protecting the ish has been just one bene it of the effort. The reef also became a tourist attraction that boosted the local economy. Fishermen build bamboo rafts and rent them to tourists who visit the reef to eat, rest, dive, and even feed the ishes.

The board has 'Pure Vegetarian' written in very bold letters in green and the name of the restaurant India cafe in orange seems a little lost on it. THE

Rtn. Nazareth Vaz Editor Every Rotarian in the club, new or old, must realize he has a role to play. In Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown, we believe that a new member today is a committed Rotarian tomorrow and opportunities for his involvement in rotary activities is given priority.

As I write my irst editorial, Rotary clubs all over the world have changed leadership and a cloud of excitement, enthusiasm and promise hangs in the air. With the theme “ Be the inspiration” for motivation, Club President Santosh Shetye with his dedicated Board of Directors and the family of Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown. are executing elaborately drawn out plans and projects to the last detail, to keep the spirit of continuity and the rotary wheel rolling in motion. Rotary International has designated August as the Membership and Extension Month which sends a clear message to give membership and extension the due priority .Members are the mainstay of an organization like Rotary and membership growth and extension remain the key to the success stories of Rotary around the world. In order to keep serving, Rotary needs to be growing. Membership Growth ,Retention and extension is a subject which is dwelled on, time after time, meeting after meeting. Growing our membership is job we don't tire from easily. One that doesn't end with the joining of a new member but only after she or he starts to enjoy Rotary and becomes a committed Rotarian. This commitment to Rotary comes with involvement and this would happen naturally if a new member has friends within his club , sharing rotary which helps him give the bene its of Rotary to the community. It becomes easier for a member to gel within a club if he is made to feel wanted. Every Rotarian in the club, new or old, must realize he has a role to play.In Rotary Club of Panaji Midtown, we believe that a new member today is a committed Rotarian tomorrow and opportunities for his involvement in rotary activities is given priority. No wonder that President Santosh has placed new Rotarians in his Board of Directors to bring in fresh perspective and new ideas .
