RTN. ASHISH PRABHU VERLEKAR Club President

This year we have laid a lot of focus on the quality of weekly meetings at our Club. I believe that club meetings are an extremely important cog in the wheel of an effective Rotary Club. We have had a mix of topical subject meetings, subjects covering designated Rotary month, meetings to highlight and celebrate our permanent projects Sudharta, Saksharta, Sahayta and Swachata in the form of WinS (Wash in Schools) and meetings which have been addressed by our Annes and Rotarians on their vocations or on topics of interest to members. I must say that the response to these initiatives has been most encouraging. Just to give you a sample since January we have had Rotarians Dr Deep Bhandare speak to us on the Importance of walking ' how to be a Johnny Walker', Rtn Adv Shivan Desai spoke about his profession giving us interesting facets of Court craft as part of celebrating of vocational services month in January, Prof. Dattesh Parulekar gave us a insightful talk on Demystifying Donald Trump and his foreign policy as part of Rotary's peace and conflict resolution month while Mr Rajkumar K spoke on the topical subject of “Making of the new Mandovi cable stay bridge' and to round off we had project meeting on Sahayta. REMINISCENCES OF THE YEARS GONE BY

MEMOIRS AS PRESIDENT 2003-2004 I remember the first quarter of the year 2003 when our GSR & Mentor Late Rtn. Ravindra Dalvi, Rtn Tushar and Rtn Ashok called me for an emergency meeting at Swimsea Resort.

RTN. M. G. CHANDRASHEKAR Past President 2003-2004

Many of you may not be aware of the circumstances under which I took up the cudgels of Presidentship. Rtn Ashok Menon was to be the President in 2003-2004 and he had already attended the Pre Pets-Sets Seminar hosted by Rotary Club of Panaji. Due to Prevailing circumstances during that year and his Official Commitments Rtn. Ashok Menon could not take up the leadership. We all understood his predicament and jointly took up the decision that I should be the next President. Our Rotary theme was “Lend a Hand coined by the then RI President Rtn. Jonathan Majiyagbe. I was also very lucky to have Rtn Dileep Salgaoncar as our DG and my meeting with him at Ratnagiri at the Pets-Sets Seminar motivated me to take up all the designated programmes for that year. Our main focus was Community Service for which we undertook quite a few projects; the highlights of which are as follows: 1) The number of beneficiaries in educational grant was increased to 40 students. 2) Renovation of the School building for Union High School-Chimbel which also included Benches and a Laboratary. 3) Swavalamban was a new project for the empowerment of women and we conducted lessons on functional literacy at Sanjeevan with noted Social worker Mrs. Asha Sawardekar. 4) Our Signature Drinking water project at Miramar is visible even today. It was sponsored by House of Caculos. 5) Polio Corrective surgery and Laproscopy were on-going projects. 6) Wheel chair donation, where we got a sponsor from Spain Mr. Tony Hays and our own Rtn. Vijay. I would also like to highlight the fact that we had one of the best District Conference under the leadership of DG Rtn Dileep Salgaoncar and Conference Chairman Rtn. Manoj Caculo. Our entire club had registered for the conference thus creating a record of 100% registration. We were given the task of operating the House of Fellowship and we Midtowners in our traditional style hosted one of the best Fellowship for District 3170. My tenure ended on a very high note with Rtn. Manoj taking over the Rotary Centenial Year as President.

ANNET’S MEETING

You Are My Hero ‘MS DHONI’ MS Dhoni the ex-captain of India and gave India many memorable moments mainly the 2011 world cup which he finished with a 6 As you all know MS Dhoni is known for his calmness, focus, power and his love for cricket which influences me to call him my role model. MS Dhoni affected a stumping of 0.09 seconds which was recorded as the fastest stumping in the world. Where a normal eye blink takes 0.10 seconds. MS Dhoni stumped the batsmen in 0.10 seconds. This shows us how focused he was and his reflexes. The final of the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 cricket tournament, was played on 24 September 2007 between India and Pakistan at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. Dhoni being a young captain lead the team to their first world T 20 wn.

ANNET VED SHEKHAR SARDESAI

The 2011 Cricket World Cup Final was a One Day International (ODI) match played between India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 2 April 2011. Jayawardene scored 103 runs in 88 balls; he was involved in a partnership of 66 runs with Thisara Perera. The pair took Sri Lanka's total to 274 runs at the close of the innings. India lost their opener Virender Sehwag in the first over of the innings, and Sachin Tendulkar got out in quick succession as well. Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli added 83 runs in 15 overs for the third wicket before the latter got out in the 22nd over. India captain MS Dhoni and Gambhir were involved in a partnership of 109, an Indian record in a World Cup final, before the latter was dismissed for 97 runs in the 42nd over. India chased down the total and won the match by four wickets in 48.2 overs. Dhoni was declared man of the match for scoring 91 runs, while his compatriot Yuvraj Singh was awarded the man of the series. The final of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy was played on 23 June 2013 between the England and India at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham. This was the 7th ICC Champions Trophy India won the match by 5 runs The match was delayed almost six hours for rain and started at 16:20 local time. But the match was reduced to 20 overs per innings. So all the rules of this match were the same as a Twenty20 game. It was India's 2nd ICC Champions Trophy championship after the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy. But they had to share the honour with Sri Lanka since this was a joint championship winning. So this was the first time when India won that title individually. In addition India became the second team after Australia to win the ICC Champions Trophy more than one time.
