RCPL Volunteers: Priceless From shelving books to teaching computer classes, the library relies on volunteers to maximize resources and better serve customers. Last year, 1,037 volunteers contributed more than 18,000 hours, a value of more than $309,000. More than 100 library volunteers were recognized at a special event at the Main Library in March.
Adult Volunteer of Year | Barbara Middendorf Barbara volunteers 10.5 hours a week at the Sandhills Branch. She helps with a variety of behind-the-scenes tasks at a library location that circulated more than 550,000 items in 2011. “Barbara is a treasure,” said Branch Manager Georgia Coleman. “She is a wonderful representative of the library, and she helps our staff do an even better job of serving our customers.” She has volunteered more than 1,600 hours, and is also being added to the RCPL Hall of Fame this year.
Teen Volunteer of the Year | Lakevious Telfair Lakevious is a veteran member of the volunteer program, providing more than two years of service and 150 hours to the Children’s Room and Main’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Whether tagging and sorting books, attending TAB meetings or helping with a puppet show for young readers, he anticipates what is needed and even takes on a leadership role with fellow volunteers. There is no question he will be missed as he graduates from high school and heads into the next chapter of his life.
Junior Volunteer of the Year | Nina Shelley Nina began volunteering five years ago, and is one of the most dedicated junior volunteers at RCPL. She helps in the Children’s Room, sorting books, cutting and preparing materials for programs, and helping maintain displays. An avid reader, she even recommends books for customers. Nina has contributed more than 300 hours of service to RCPL and is a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.
