Chairman’s Report David Hamilton

The success of our network is built upon the principle of co-operation. As Australia’s leading co-operative, we continue to set high standards with products and services that enable members to be at the forefront of real estate marketing. As a co-operative, our emphasis is always on member benefits notwithstanding our non profit philosophy. As a result, we have again in 2010 achieved a trading surplus whilst fufilling our member benefits strategy. A highlight of 2010 is the member uptake and enthusiastic adoption of the network’s new brand positioning. The support for this initiative has greatly improved member profiles and, as a result, the positioning of the network in the real estate landscape. Initiatives such as the new branding can only be achieved by collective leadership throughout the network. The members who serve on our regional councils and, ultimately, the national board, reflect the calibre of the broader membership and, subsequently, lead the network into its current strong market position. This leadership process was enhanced in 2010 with member adoption of a two year rotation for national board positions effective in 2011.

For the new members joining our co-operative, your participation is strongly encouraged at leadership levels, within the network, be it at zone, chapter or regional council level. It is truly your opportunity to participate in the direction of the network. In the spirit of involvement, thanks must go to the many ‘volunteers’ who freely give their time, experience and expertise to assist with the implementation of our regional events and chapters such as Property Management, Rural and Commercial. As my six year directorship concludes in May, I would like to acknowledge the support I have received from family, friends, colleagues, and, ultimately, the membership who provided me with a very memorable chapter in my life. A highlight of my directorship was two years ago when I was afforded the privilege of being elected your Chairman with a mandate for technological improvement and preparing the network for the next phase of the internet age. This is an ongoing commitment that will continue to gain strength not only with the products and services that exist within the national administration but also as a result of the desire, commitment and expertise amongst the membership. In closing, we are a network with a proud heritage and an even more exciting future. See you in Coolum - May 2011

This year saw the launch of the online Academy to facilitate training at an office level regardless of location. When used in conjunction with the network’s regular and substantial ‘face-to-face’ training, the Academy delivers a professional development program which is unparalleled within our industry. Member feedback on this initiative and how it has assisted office management and sales training is reinforcement of your national board’s ongoing strategy.

CEO’s Report Ray Ellis

In 2010, the network recorded another financial surplus, enabling the fulfilment of our strategy for delivery of products and services that ensure member offices remain at the forefront of the real estate industry.

The network cemented its positioning by providing comprehensive support for the property management divisions within member offices through the appointment of the Network Property Manager. This role facilitates national co-ordination of products, services, professional development and easy access to resources on Gateway. The regular communication ‘The Asset’ has greatly improved the daily work habits of property managers throughout Australia.

Professional development entered a new era in 2010 with the introduction of Academy, the network’s online portal. This initiative enabled member offices, particularly remote locations, to access either live training or stored ‘on-demand’ sessions for future meetings. The cost saving to members, in terms of travel and time spent out of the office, has been substantial and member feedback has indicated that this initiative has revolutionised office-training procedures.

Chapter conferences for Rural, Commercial and Property Management were well attended throughout 2010 and provided specific training and resources for these specific areas of expertise. The Commercial Chapter received further impetus in the marketplace with the adoption of the new brand positioning. These chapters are well served by participating members who freely share their knowledge and expertise to advance the network.

The continuation of our internet-based lead generation initiatives saw the very successful Super Massive $25,000 Giveaway campaign deliver substantial quality leads to participating offices. First National has virtually made these campaigns unique in our industry and this ‘ownership’ of inbound marketing bodes well for the future. Throughout 2010, as the network’s new brand positioning gained traction through member participation, strong interest within the broader community concerning our ‘new look’ positioned our network as a clear leader in differentiation. Our combination of national strength with local expertise, in particular long-established family businesses, enabled member offices to offer a point of difference within the marketplace. This new positioning differentiation has also enabled network products, such as Utopia, to gain enhanced traction while delivering a tangible sales and property management team tool. Product delivery and enhancements of programs such as Platform and fusion2.0 provided member offices with automated customer relationship management and streamlined print advertising.

The National Convention journeyed to the red centre – Alice Springs – for the first time. The Convention workshops, annual general meeting, awards and, of course, the finale at Ooraminna Homestead resulted in overwhelmingly positive feedback. Our local office, First National Framptons, provided fellow members with outstanding hospitality. In 2011, the National Convention – Coolum, Queensland – will, again, welcome our New Zealand partners. Events such as the National Convention, our chapter conferences and awards ceremonies received great support from our alliance partners. These financial partners have established a strong tradition of support for our member offices and, as such, member support of their products and services is vital for the ongoing success of this unique relationship. 2010 was another strong year for your network. The delivery of excellence continued, further strengthening our marketplace position whilst, at the same time, building on the generational change of our co-operative as we approach our 30th anniversary in 2012.

The above programs supported our comprehensive PR campaigns where the emphasis was on local participation and content. Our regular commentary on the internet-based Finance News Network provided members’ websites with ‘rich’ content and up-to-date information on the real estate marketplace.

First National Foundation Consolidating fund-raising for community benefit

‘At First National Gunnedah, I certainly see alignment with Red Cross as being very productive for our country NSW firm. With enough natural disasters in recent times, it is great to be a part of such an ethically sound and humane organisation that puts people in need first. Co-branding provides good business profiling’ Mike Brady, First National Gunnedah (Gunnedah, NSW)

snapshots

The creative, tireless efforts of members and staff constitute the backbone of one of Australian real estate’s great fund-raising initiatives. Enthusiasm for the support of local and national community contributed to the success of First National Foundation in 2010. First National Foundation reached a major milestone in 2010 with the donation of more than $1 million to Australian Red Cross Emergency Services since its 2005 establishment. Member fund-raising has now made a significant difference to the way Australian communities prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters. With a newly restructured Board of Directors and Chairman, First National Foundation surveyed members with the intention of becoming more responsive. Excellent feedback has enabled Foundation to create an expanded list of charities with local interests to benefit from the network’s future fundraising. Member co-branding with Red Cross delivers greater local recognition and positions First National agents as the ones that care about their community sufficiently to contribute to disaster preparedness. Many a property listing decision is swayed in First National’s favour as a result of this association, but better still, it provides members and staff a cause to rally around and a cultural focus.

8

2010 annual report

Support of Australian Red Cross Emergency Services continues and members will have increased access to branding as well as local Red Cross representatives to attend events and receive donation cheques. This change will provide the impetus to gain increased local and national recognition as well as greater membership support. The First National Foundation brand was refreshed in 2010, bringing it into alignment with the network’s brand positioning. Associated with the strength of the Red Cross brand, First National Foundation has continued to grow in stature by developing its own, strong identity. First National Foundation Week (Oct 11 to 15) saw substantial fundraising efforts, even though several states were hit by adverse weather conditions. Members raised tens of thousands of dollars nationally. Innovative fundraising events took place around the country like: • First National Frank Facey’s carpet bowls event at the Narre Warren Bowling Club • Busselton First National’s BBQ and Jelly Bean guessing competition • First National Hawks Nest’s bowling event that also included a sausage sizzle, raffles and a ‘kids corner’ with face painting, races and craft With a renewed commitment to Australian Red Cross Emergency Services and support of new charities, First National Foundation continues to confirm the network’s identity as a responsible, corporate citizen, committed to the fabric of the Australian community.

New Brand Strengthening consumer appeal across all market categories

Existing member profile has been enhanced and customer reach expanded through delivery of the network’s new brand. With over 83 per cent of the network now rebranded, the refresh is the most successful non-compulsory marketing initiative in First National’s history. Long established, well-recognised member names have been strengthened through the introduction of enlarged member trading names, as well as refreshed, more consistent, modernised branding. New member recruitment has also benefited, with previous levels of monthly membership enquiry (generated under the old brand) now received on a weekly basis.

First National Daystar has been a recognised brand, servicing the local community’s requirements for the past 13 years. Two years ago, Daystar was ranked 11th out of 14 local offices in terms of sales turnover. Today, we can proudly say we are in the top 3, having achieved a staggering 300% growth in the past 12 months alone. Our market share has grown from a low base of 4% to a massive 27%. There are many factors contributing to our sharp rise, one of those being the new First National brand.’ Michael Sleiman, First National Daystar (Padstow, NSW)

The breadth of the new brand’s reach was discussed extensively at the September Strategy Forum. Members present indicated that since changing to the new brand, they have been able to access premium listings with greater ease, while others have equally found the new brand has helped them reconnect with working class customers. There is no doubt that the rebranding of the network was timely, well received, and effective in its targeting of the entire property spectrum and consumer demographic.

Preliminary research indicates that the brand has helped the network:

Increase market share

New members want to be part of the network’s great future and are implementing the many benefits and technologies available. Franchise competitors previously resistant to the former First National brand have stated their interest in joining as a direct result of the new brand.

Increase local member profile

A most encouraging sign is the acquisition of enthusiastic new members in locations where the network has had little or no past representation, or long-term vacancies. Sydney’s Manly is one such example. There has also been growth of new members in established markets where previous members, who didn’t share the network’s vision, have established themselves - thriving and leaving competitors in their wake.

Increase new member recruitment opportunities

Improve member business sale prospects and value

The public’s known difficulty in identifying the network’s national size and strength, as a result of its previously inconsistent, fragmented branding, is anticipated to be substantially reduced when new research is commissioned in 2011. Anecdotal member evidence already indicates a major shift has occurred. Due to the refresh, consumer feedback confirms that the network is going from strength to strength.

The only thing I’ve done is send out an eCard to my database… 95% of respondents said yes to at least one of the first two questions. 100% said yes to owning an investment property. This has allowed me to update my database and service these people properly. It has been the best lead generation competition yet.’

The design studio’s chief 2010 focus was to facilitate the smooth transition for all members rebranding their shopfronts. This entailed not just signwriting design but in many cases, supporting marketing materials for local promotions. In conjunction with the rebrand and member requests, the studio also designed all national and state based marketing campaigns, supported all primary areas of the network’s strategic focus with marketing collateral, and, developed consistently high quality promotional materials for all conferences and events, including the National Convention.

There’s nothing like a lead generation competition to bring out a little First National competitive spirit. Members found a wide variety of creative ways to inform the public of the campaign. A prize for the best local promotion of the campaign needed to be shared between two member offices; such was the quality of finalists. First National Burnie (TAS) hired a roadside highway sign, registered a special domain name, designed badges for all staff to wear, conducted database marketing, promoted using facebook, Twitter, their Blog and Linkedin, plus, they conducted a stealthy Bluetooth marketing campaign that ensured anybody walking past their office received a text message invitation to enter the competition! Equal winner, First National Sarina’s (QLD) entire team engaged with the competition’s promotion, using database marketing, facebook mentions, plus PR activities incorporating Sunday markets and T-shirts specially embroidered with competition details.

The central purpose of the network’s communications is to promote understanding of membership benefits and corporate culture internally, to position brand identity externally, and to raise profile for member and recruitment benefit.

The network’s twice-annual Property Market Outlook drives business to member doors by making their business the local authority on property market performance and trends. Participation increased with 10 per cent of members now contributing in the online survey process, advising the network of their local conditions and market expectations.

One of the core tasks of 2010 was to inform of progress related to the network’s rebrand. Weekly updates advised of member launch celebrations through The Pulse and links to a Picassa Web Gallery enabled the rebrand’s progress to be monitored by all. Maintaining high-level awareness of individual member experiences contributed to the confidence of others to make the change.

Member implementation of network media releases continues to improve and the addition of social media content for Utopia, Twitter and facebook assisted many to take their first social networking steps. Media monitoring provides evidence that members have become more media savvy, using ideas from soft releases as angles to generate coverage by relating them to current topics.

Communications and PR activities are directed at raising member profile locally but must also work collaboratively with the network’s recruitment aims. A major new member recruitment drive was coordinated around the rebrand to maximise impact. Recruitment advertisements developed a strong new theme and style, relaying the membership experience in the words of current members. These appeared in institute journals and industry publications, backed up by an online campaign culminating in the launch of a leading edge recruitment website – joinfirstnational.com.au

Rather than competing with data houses and economic commentators, the network now contrasts its ‘real world’ market feedback against the considered ‘economic experts’ and has consequently established a niche in the media marketplace. An inaugural First National Commercial Property Outlook also made its entry in 2010, furthering the profile of the specialist brand.

Acknowledging the three million Australians that speak languages other than English, First National launched its Multi-lingual campaign. The introduction of a suite of Chinese, Greek, Italian, Arabic and Vietnamese windowcards, letterbox dropcards and eCards to Utopia and fusion2.0 enabled members to promote their services to a broader audience. All template PortPlus member websites now carry language conversion links and, at the click of a mouse, non-English speaking customers now find First National’s services more accessible.

Professional Development Educating, up-skilling and driving productivity

One of the distinct advantages of First National’s cooperative management model is the contribution made to planning and delivery of professional development by members. With such a widely spread network, no single approach could possibly suit all regions. Following considerable research and development, First National’s implementation of online professional development through Academy heralds new opportunities and enormous cost savings, not just for remote and district members, but for metropolitan members as well. Delivering live presentations on a regular basis, members as far away as Broome and Burnie can now reliably access, watch and participate in quality training sessions. Those unable to watch sessions as they are broadcast live, simply return to Academy at a convenient time and watch their session of choice, on-demand. Entire teams gather in offices nationwide to share training opportunities and interact. One of the 2010 Academy highlights was Member Services Manager Greg Reed’s Social Media 101 presentation. Enormous interest surrounds the social media sphere and many agents are taking their first steps in this relatively uncharted form of new business generation. Akin to the door knocking of old, Twitter, facebook and LinkedIn are just some of the mediums the profession now uses to build relationships. The session has become an exceptional resource, with many staff and members continuing to watch, on-demand, long after the original broadcast. The Academy continues to expand its library of resources and as 2010 drew to a close, an agreement with the internationally acclaimed David Knox, was announced. This will enable members to access a vast library of exceptional training resources throughout 2011 at absolutely no additional cost.

15 Either through state Regional Councils or through member surveys, consultation is key. By asking what areas of focus and which speakers would most benefit members’ businesses regionally, the network follows a process aimed at delivering broadly accessible, accurately targeted training. Now well established, the South East Queensland Academy (SEQA) is a professional development benchmark. In its fifth successful year of operation, many other Regional Councils have adopted similar processes to drive professional development in their state. The tyranny of distance has long been a challenge for a network such as First National. With members spread far and wide, the logistics and costs associated with professional development in remote locations has always been difficult to overcome. However, with the launch of Academy at National Convention, a solution has been delivered.

Software Systems Driving greater member efficiency and profitability

‘We love Utopia! We have been creating newsletters using Utopia for 10 months now and it is certainly a lot easier than desktop publishing - which we did for over 5 years. Thank you First National for the great initiative’ Brenda Griffiths, First National Broome (Broome, WA) ‘Platform is a very user-friendly application with plenty of potential! The support team is extremely experienced and will fix any issues you have with the system in no time. I would recommend Platform to any real estate office looking at upgrading! Rachel Behrendorff, Administration First National Biloela (Biloela, QLD)

The network’s position as a leader in software systems was underlined this year by Utopia’s achievement of finalist status in the Australian Marketing Institute’s Relationship Marketing Category – a category contested by no other real estate industry representative. Effective management of customer relationships is of paramount importance so systems that provide members with an exclusive edge are essential.

snapshots Platform is First National’s CRM system (Customer Relationship Management); a powerful system that puts principals in complete control, unlocking the ability to clearly understand an agency’s performance status with ease. Version 2.9 was released in 2010, delivering integration with Utopia’s buyer criteria data and further streamlining member business operation.

LIST • SELL • COMMUNICATE

Utopia is one of First National’s exclusive technologies; a product that enables property managers and salespeople to maintain a high level of communication with customers, and, increase their efficiency at matching buyers to listings and tenants to vacancies. It generates new business and improves customers’ perceptions. The product consolidated its position within the network as a powerful listing and selling and renting tool, ending the year with 72 per cent of the membership enjoying its benefits. Continual member input has led to over 50 refinements and new features. 60 existing users upgraded from Utopia-Lite to the full version during the year, unlocking added features and benefits while delivering their customers better service. The October launch of Utopia in New Zealand followed successful trials throughout 2009/10 and the product is now helping New Zealand’s membership to operate with greater efficiency while delivering new service standards to New Zealand’s property services consumers. Online webinar training continues to help members and staff maximise the benefits of Utopia. Over 200 staff logged into training sessions to explore new features and share tips and ideas.

18

2010 annual report

An extensive review of activity plans commenced with the goal of trimming any areas of duplication and to achieve an overall simplification. The property management module entered beta testing and it is anticipated that the move to full release will take place in 2011. A series of Platform training webinars, held mid-year, were very well attended with over 350 staff participating.

The network’s own advertising template system, ‘fusion2.0’ was updated to include many of the new brand’s features. The introduction of new signboards, newspaper and direct marketing templates provided members greater flexibility when advertising. Enhanced integration with the First National’s website alliance partner, PortPlus, allowed members the ease of submitting data once then populating across all advertising templates. Quality enhancements saw all artwork submitted to newspapers processed and delivered via Quickcut. Additional property management, commercial and rural advertising proposals, booklets and flyers were created to assist members with the creation of professionally designed and written listing documentation, at no additional cost.

First National Commercial

‘For the first six months of this year we have written more than double our commercial income from last financial year. Yes, we are working harder faster and smarter, but we are doing this with the new brand, and the public are now saying “you guys do commercial’

A watershed year for growth

John Riggall, First National Riggall (Prospect, SA)

Ongoing development of commercial member benefits saw the Commercial Operations Manual reviewed and updated, as were templates, eCards, Information Memorandums and online commercial listing submissions.

Network growth of over 400 per cent made 2010 a watershed year for First National Commercial. Synergy with the First National parent brand and clarity of purpose is delivering rapid expansion of membership.

A new, dedicated, commercial newsletter heralded the introduction of industry specific news and internal updates. The Conveyor is now enthusiastically received by the network’s commercial membership on an approximately bi-monthly cycle. First National Commercial is evolving, gaining strength, and delivering upon the strategic goals of the commercial steering committee. 2011 will see the first steps taken towards a commercially specific training programme, further expanding the benefits available to commercial operators and their staff.

Accompanying rapidly rising brand awareness, current members report expanded market share. This evidence provided the necessary encouragement for many chiefly residential members to diversify their income stream by expanding into the commercial arena. Existing commercial members, who had operated under the previous brand, report a threefold increase in business enquiry rates. Further member advantage was created through implementation of regular corporate communication via the National Contact Database.

‘Since adopting the new commercial brand, we have received calls from prospective clients asking to speak to our Leasing Manager and Commercial Sales Manager. Previously the calls were not specific to commercial. Enquiries have come from our new signs, the running man, and from our office signage. Previously, commercial enquiries were mainly from existing clients who knew we handled commercial. We are excited and enjoying the experience, and, so many new ideas have been generated from that excitement. Our enquiry rate has trebled and results are now starting to flow’

The ‘Power Up’ theme of the Annual Commercial Conference proved an accurate reflection of First National Commercial’s transformation and growing momentum. BIS Shrapnel Senior Project Manager Maria Lee delivered an uplifting forecast for Australian commercial markets before an eager audience. Her ‘Good Times Ahead’ presentation outlined the anticipated growth of specific commercial market segments, underlining the opportunity that exists for First National members to profit considerably in the years ahead.

Finding First National First Australians love real estate! First National’s continued focus on search engine optimisation and success led to more consumers finding First National under more search terms than ever before – agent names, property addresses, location searches and more.

Propertyadguru.com, a US website that provides web-marketing advice, compared an Inman ‘Innovator Award of the Year’ winning website with First National’s corporate website and a domestic competitor’s early in 2010. The article criticised the award winning website before contrasting it with the advancement of First National’s website, saying ‘Meanwhile, firstnational.com.au seem very comfortable with social media, presenting home hunters with large links to its facebook and Twitter accounts’ whereas the competitor’s website was considered disadvantaged for choosing not to engage with its customers via social media.

Rural Member input delivers service differentiation

‘A very big thank you to the First National corporate team... both the zone meeting and Rural Conference were outstanding and have given us plenty of great strategies and tools to implement. We are very excited about what the next 12 months should bring’ Tim Aldridge, First National Collie & Tierney (Mildura, VIC)

Rural Specialists

The network’s commitment to specialist rural property services is reinforced through ongoing support of important annual events such as AgQuip, The Toowoomba Ag Show and over 20 individual Field Days nationally. The introduction of a ‘Rural Specialists’ logo as well as the delivery of multiple events, marketing initiatives, training sessions and networking opportunities assures market differentiation and skill optimisation.

The national rebranding strategy provided a platform for introduction of a ‘Rural Specialists’ logo to help differentiate First National rural members from competitors. Members concentrating on rural enterprise and lifestyle properties sought an identifying element and First National’s design studio’s delivery of a striking cattle brand logo was positively received.

An annual calendar of rural initiatives underlines First National Real Estate’s support of rural/regional Australia and provides opportunities to meet and engage with customers, to promote regional and metropolitan property listings, and to capture contact data through competitions that draw general public attention and generate business leads. Maximising leverage from government incentives that encourage relocation to regional centres directs current rural marketing initiatives. Tree-change and lifestyle property audiences are specifically targeted through print and electronic media as well as individual initiatives. eMagazine exercises help target such customers at AgQuip and other large rural events while South Australia Stock Journal inserts, backed by online distribution of eMagazines to thousands of customers, have proven immensely effective. The May construction of an additional permanent display shed at the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days site will provide opportunities for Central Western NSW members to engage with regional customers for years to come. First National’s longstanding AgQuip exhibit, ‘Geoff’s Shed’, received refurbishment and was rebranded during the year. The 2010 selection of training and workshops maintained a platform for regional members to share knowledge, chart network initiatives and build business connections. The West Beach two-day workshop in Adelaide provided an example of members directly developing marketing and promotional strategies at First National. As a result of that particular gathering, support of a real estate magazine for insertion in rural print media, backed by an electronic version specifically suited to local needs, was backed by 18 regional offices. Social media, internet success, database building and vendor paid advertising are areas of specific and growing interest to regional members and these remain frequent topics of discussion, debate, training and development.

National Rural Conference The National Rural Conference is an important component of the annual rural calendar. Held this year in Swan Hill, member representatives travelled from all states to enjoy a two-day agenda comprising keynote speakers, member forums and workshops. Characterised by a positive outlook for regional businesses, the conference provided an opportunity for member interaction and proved an informative and progressive foundation for the challenges of the next twelve months. New information technologies, eMagazines, iPads and ‘getting it right on the internet’ provided focal points. A Trivia Night and conference dinner included a successful charity auction that raised funds for First National Foundation. National Contact Database Members were further advantaged by implementation of the National Contact Database. Implementation of regular marketing communication to corporate contacts nationally will follow in due course. Property Management Maximising landlord returns and caring for customers

‘With the support of the Network Property Manager and the resources available on Gateway, we have restructured our property management department. This restructure has created a more efficient and pro-active department and we have now grown to over 800 properties under management. This has certainly taken the stress out of our department’ Sean O’Connor, First National O’Connor (Wollongong, NSW)

The network now manages approximately 90,000 investment properties with a market value exceeding $2.6 billion throughout the cities and regional centres of Australia and New Zealand.

A commitment to the refinement of property management resources and support also led to the creation of a new role in 2010 – Network Property Manager. Chiefly focused on the foundation of new resources, the Network Property Manager surveyed the network’s property management staff and set about responding to their needs.

Membership benefits experienced exponential growth throughout 2010 with the implementation of multiple and varied initiatives.

Property Managers now benefit from access to all state based legislation on Gateway, updated Quality Assurance processes, Ezidebit payment facilities, and a variety of departmental resources such as position descriptions, proforma correspondence and guidelines for the structuring of property management departments. Other new alliances forged include Barclays MIS, RP Data and 1Form, all of whom provide sponsorship of property management events.

Acknowledging the difficulty experienced by tenants searching for rental accommodation, the network launched its Pet Friendly Rental Search, gaining the praise of well-respected animal welfare organisation, the Animal Welfare League and the Australian Companion Animal Council.

The foundation of a facebook property managers’ group rapidly attracted a following of over 100 of the network’s top staff. The forum provides the opportunity for discussion of ideas and problems and has become a reliable source of expertise sharing.

The unique search feature was applied to national and member websites in an effort to help families with pets who are searching for rental properties, as well as to reduce the increasing number of animals being surrendered each year due to the lack of available pet friendly accommodation.

An inaugural property management communication, The Asset, now provides a multimedia vehicle through which the latest developments are promoted to the network’s property managers. This initiative has immediately garnered a close following and proven of considerable benefit.

Backed with windowcard marketing collateral, the search feature rapidly attracted thousands of hits, differentiating First National members, yet again, as the agents who put customer interests first. Landlords now enjoy the option of marketing to a wider pool of tenants or, alternatively, screening out tenants with pets. Conversely, tenants can immediately identify the properties of most value to them, saving both them and First National property managers’ valuable time.

The provision of regional training as well as online sessions through Gateway’s Academy further extended the reach of the network’s support. The national Property Management Conference gave property managers the opportunity to convene in Sydney at Manly. Once again hosted by network publicist Vivienne Corcoran, a broad array of speakers provided professional development, networking opportunities and profile development.

Member Services Driving the achievement of member business goals

Member Services Managers communicate information and help members implement First National resources in their businesses. Equally important is their communication of member feedback to the administration team. Implementation of the inaugural Member Business Goals Survey provided a new process by which Member Services Managers (MSMs) were able to precisely design individual annual service plans to assure the achievement of key goals in each member’s business. Principals and MSMs working together fosters a strong sense of partnership, purpose and cooperation between members and the network. As the different goals of each agency are reached, feedback confirms high levels of member satisfaction and a joint sense of achievement. A management restructure led to a merger of the two primary service regions - Northern Region / Southern and Western Region. Creation of a National Member Services Manager role and a National Network Development Manager position facilitated greater focus with member service and new member recruitment. Dissolution of the network’s state and regional borders also saw MSMs varied skill sets and backgrounds utilised to the greater benefit of members nationally. Continued use of an internal skillsharing intranet, The Hub, enables MSMs to share knowledge, find answers, report on their office service visits and coordinate consistent service delivery.

‘As a member of the First National network, I have access to some amazing people. Not only do we have our own Member Services Manager available on-site at any time, I can also pick up the phone or email any of the other Member Services Managers across Australia who have a different range of skills and expertise’. Lynda Briggs, First National Ellenbrook (Ellenbrook, WA)

Following on from the success of 2009’s Network Doctor initiative, 2010 is described as a year where MSMs worked to raise member awareness and implementation of network products, services. Many offices were, in effect, re-inducted into the network, and brought up-to-date with the plethora of resources available to them. The success of the 2010 Member Business Goals Survey initiative was that by asking members to define areas of weakness in their business, genuine progress was made that not only strengthened individual member agencies but the network as a whole.

‘Since we joined First National three years ago, we have gone from being “just another real estate agent” to being the real estate agent in town. We can directly attribute this growth to the relationship we have with the member services team. Any concerns or questions we have, be they with programmes, promotions, advertising or marketing, are immediately addressed after only one phone call to our Member Services Manager, Scott Hawkins. As First National is very pro-active in having the answers, many times Scott is able to answer the query himself, however, if he is unable to immediately help, follow-up is always forthcoming. At the beginning of this year we were asked by Member Services what our business goals were. They have addressed each of these aims specifically, and have been instrumental in helping us achieve ALL of them.

Network Development

‘If the First National brand was still in the old style, I would not have considered joining First National as I truly believe that, with the old style of logo, it would have been very hard to compete in today’s modern world of real estate. The change has moved First National into the forefront of real estate brands.’

Keeping the network vital through new member recruitment

Recruitment of new members is essential to network vitality. The network today targets its audience through a comprehensive strategy incorporating print advertising, database marketing, multi media, social media and direct contact.

‘What a great conference. Not just a great location, but great sessions and keynote speakers. The best conference I have ever attended. Absolutely first class’. Russell Pollock, First National Sarina (Sarina Qld)

Hosted by First National Framptons’ principals Andrew Doyle and David Forrest, First National’s Convention in Alice Springs proved to be one of the network’s most successful. The spectacular backdrop of the ancient Flinders Ranges set a unique scene for the First National’s 27th Convention. Three world-class speakers - Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, Peter FitzSimons, Bob Pritchard - delivered fascinating presentations and members participated in over 24 Power Sessions and workshops. One of National Convention’s primary purposes is the delivery of essential business skills training. Power sessions incorporated topics such as social media, solving staff issues, top techniques from sales stars, raising profile to win more listings, tax depreciation, online profile management and much more. The network’s Alliance Partners supported the convention with an expansive exhibitor showcase and a mock-up First National office presented the new First National brand and marketing collateral. As a direct result of member input at the annual member Strategy Forum, products and initiatives launched included:

National Convention cont.

‘Thank you for what I believe to be the best convention I have ever attended. The closing dinner was certainly the best yet. I have never been a big fan of “power sessions”, mainly because they are presented by real estate agents, but every session that I attended was excellent. The variety made it hard to choose but the ones I chose were very professional with a lot of information that I needed. Doug Trenham, First National Toowoomba (Toowoomba, QLD)

A new record was also set with the attendance of five past National Chairmen. Rory Trotter, Graham Newnham, Simon O’Donoghue, David Hamilton (current Chairman), Mike Macqueen, and Wayne Nicholson all made the journey to Alice Springs. The network’s Advocates, who as ex-members share responsibility for guiding the network, were also out in force. Delegates who had attended the Australasian Real Estate Conference (AREC) commented that the Power Sessions and keynote presentations at First National’s convention provided much more useful, practical information. Other networks have acknowledged First National as a competitive threat, observed the Chairman in his member address. Citing the example of another major network’s advertising campaign and its blatant duplication of First National’s new brand campaign, members were reminded of the very real progress made. In the words of the CEO, First National is now ‘driving the truck of progress’, effectively positioning itself in the minds of consumers and competitors as the brand to do business with.

The National Convention awards dinner is always a highlight. Member achievements were celebrated in style and the Foundation fund-raising auction broke all records. Auctioneer Matt Leonard of First National Tweed Sutherland whipped up enthusiasm for the six items on offer, leading to over $30,000 being raised for First National Foundation. Without doubt, the convention Finale at Ooraminna Homestead provided the staging post for an exceptional closing event. With the location kept a closely guarded secret, members were transferred through the inky desert darkness to the historic cattle station. Treated to a walk of fame, through applauding and cheering network staff, members were surprised and awestruck by the degree of preparation that had taken place. A traditional roast dinner was served then the incredible Patrick McMahon, who soon had staff and members at his side, dazzled the audience with an outstanding evening’s entertainment. A staggering fireworks display completed the evening, drawing to a close a National Convention to be long remembered.

Alliance Partners Contributing to the First National edge

‘Honan Insurance Brokers are proud to be an Alliance Partner of the First National Real Estate network. The support and interest of National Office and the members is wonderful. National Convention provides an ideal opportunity for us to showcase our services and to build on our relationships with members’ Chris Glass, Honan Insurance Brokers

The network’s Alliance Partners are industry specialists familiar with the challenges and opportunities facing real estate agents. Working collaboratively, First National ensures that exclusive benefits and savings are driven on behalf of its membership. Preservation of the value of Alliance Partners to First National Real Estate members is an ongoing exercise. The new role of Relationship Manager now underpins this important function, ensuring lines of communication between National Office and Alliance Partners are always open, clear and progressive in nature. With Alliance Partner sponsorship of network events ensuring mutual benefit, year on year, major alliances continue to flourish. The presence of the industry’s leading suppliers at network events elevates member benefit, appeal and convenience while minimising the need for members to seek supplier information from other sources or industry events.

Utility connection services such as Direct Connect make moving with First National a breeze for customers. BMT Quantity Surveyors depreciation schedules help expand residential and commercial expertise, while helping landlords maximise their tax deductions. Alliance Partners such as iVisual assist members to amplify the impact of their rebrand by installing electronic displays in shopfront windows. The contribution of Programmed to the network’s ongoing rebrand of offices throughout 2010 is also acknowledged. With over 280 shopfront design mock-ups completed, momentum of signwriting design was consistently maintained. The ‘Partners in Progress Cocktail Evening’ saw First National welcome new Alliance Partner Ezidebit to its stable of property management suppliers. Ezidebit is a rental payment solution that streamlines time management and greatly improves dollar productivity for property managers. First National Real Estate acknowledges the enormous contribution and support of Alliance Partners throughout 2010. Thank you.

With communication vital to awareness of Alliance Partner products and services nationally, First National provides a monthly advisory that assures Alliance Partners receive the latest contact details for First National’s continually evolving membership.

Unfortunately, it was not to be the case and many regions throughout both North and South Islands saw sales decline by a further 30 per cent as the year progressed. Rural and Commercial sales activity was heavily affected. This, in turn, had a major affect on sales staff retention, office viability and, as a result, the New Zealand administration’s levels of activity. However, as the year progressed, outstanding innovations at local, regional and national level led to some excellent outcomes. Members completed the re-brand of their office premises nationally, providing New Zealand with a strongly consistent brand profile. The only exceptions were members who have imminent plans to move premises.

‘First National delivers! For a fraction of the cost of other major players, we get the latest in technical support from head office, we get the latest information and assistance regarding new developments, and our network guided us through the re-structure of our industry. For that alone I am eternally grateful’ Mark Williams, First National Tepuke

A weekly newsletter targeted at First National’s sales agents provided ongoing support and sales tips from the national administration. First National Foundation announced a major alliance with Plunket, New Zealand’s largest provider of support services for the development, health and wellbeing of children under the age of five. A not-for-profit organisation, Plunket is community owned and governed, making it an ideal fit for a cooperative real estate network reaching out to local communities. The General Manager’s relocation from Christchurch to Wellington is aimed at driving closer relations with the nation’s newly formed peak industry body, the Real Estate Authority. Operating from this location will also facilitate ease of access to legal advisors and network alliance partners.

A restructure of National Office was completed with the aim of refining delivery of member benefits. The Member Services Managers team also increased their focus on delivering value to members’ sales staff and became more involved in succession planning, as well as new member recruitment.

With a strong new brand as well as lean and efficient businesses, First National New Zealand is primed for rapid market share growth when the New Zealand property market begins its resurgence.

Listing agreements for rural and commercial members were revised, along with second generation residential agreements, bringing the network’s documentation into accord with new legislation.

The new sales staff induction programme, Key Skills, was revised and relaunched in the last quarter. This programme greatly assists new staff of the network to appreciate the network’s ethos of ‘We put you first’ as well as the scope of resources available to assist their development.

First National Mark Stephenson then bought the boat and have used it for a number of charity and community events since.
