it is a ping pong situation pictures are thrown at us we create realities which create pictures pictures in our heads create realities in all this whirling we try to live our daily lives earning money, enjoying leisure time with friends eating well and sleeping well reading a good book. watching a great film bicycles and table tennis, a beautiful blade of grass, a funny animal sometimes life is that easy but not always theories help little when the social fabric of society loses its basic common sense and values things fall apart in the months following the 18 revolutionary days in Midan Tahrir in Cairo Egypt in 2011 and elsewhere in the country, the Egyptian people were exposed to a lot of realities, in real pictures, which had been simmering under the huge metal lid covering everything up during Mubarak’s time and before. now, they were out in the open: naked women, beating soldiers, mourning mothers – images Egypt and the world had never seen before out in the open, publically available to everyone, exposed. a nation exposed. beyond the jokes people used to make and beyond the imaginings people had about their neighbour’s habits.

‫فى الشهور التي تلت الأيام الثمانية عشر في ميدان التحرير بالقاهرة‬ ،‫ تعرض المصريون للكثير من الحقائق‬، 2011 ‫ومدن أخرى فى‬ ‫تعرضوا إلى صور حقيقية كانت مكبوتة تحت ذلك الغطاء الحديدي‬ ‫ الآن‬.‫الهائل الذي كان يخفي كل شيء في سنين حكم مبارك وقبلها‬ ،‫ الجنود المتوحشون‬،‫ النساء العاريات‬:‫خرجت تلك الحقائق إلى العلن‬ ،‫الأمهات الثكالى – صور لم ترها مصر أو العالم قبلا خرجت إلى العلن‬ ‫ شعب مكشوف بلا مواربة‬.‫ليشاهدها الجميع بلا مواربة‬ ‫خلف تلك النكات التي يقولها الناس والتصورات التي يتخيلها الناس‬ ‫عن جيرانهم‬

During the Balkan wars (1991-1999) sexual assault, rape and atrocious murder were part of warfare, as they are and have been in every other war. When numbers of afflicted female victims reached its peak, demonstrations swelled into huge waves of marching protests or silent vigils across the globe. The Mubarak government allowed independent newspapers to be published. Adel Hamuda was the first Editor-in Chief. Eisaam Fahmy, business man and owner of the newspaper El Dostor (the constitution) also became the owner of Sout el Umma. A lot happened between the people: Adel Hamuda left to found El Fagr; Ibrahim Eissa, editor of El Dostor, worked for several months for Sout el Umma; 2009/2010 el Dostor was sold to the president of the Wafd Party; more happened; Dr. Hakim Qandil, a Nasserist who used to work for Al Arabi Newspaper became Sout el Umma’s Editor-in-Chief. In 2011, after the revolutionary 18 days, Ibrahim Eissa was given enough money from Naguib Sawiris to start the daily El Tahrir, to be published by El Shorouk.
