2016–2017 Annual Report

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends of Rawson Saunders, Thank you for your commitment to education excellence for students with dyslexia. Your understanding of the tremendous potential of learners with dyslexia—and your steadfast support of Rawson Saunders— has allowed, and continues to allow, hundreds of children to experience the magic of succeeding—and truly thriving—in school. It is through your generosity that Rawson Saunders is able to change the lives of the students we serve. It is also because of your generosity that we are able to celebrate one of the most important achievements in the history of our school: the purchase this summer of the beautiful 33.7 acre property on which we now will begin to build the world-class learning spaces our students (and their very dedicated teachers) deserve. For the sake of our students and their families, as well as children, parents and educators everywhere, I am excited that the next chapter in our story will allow us to show the world what is possible in education for learners with dyslexia. This report, thus, is a record of the great strength, unity, dedication, and vitality of a community which stands together in support of providing bright and hopeful minds with tools and training to confidently navigate the world, now and in the future. A heartfelt thank you for being a part of it. Warmly,

Laura Steinbach, M.S.Ed. Head of School 1

My son is bright, cheerful, and kindhearted. I watched him not only fall behind in public school but lose some of that bright, kind spirit as he struggled to read and write. After three years in public school he fell farther and farther behind until he no longer wanted to go to school and his self-esteem was becoming an issue. The school continued to “graduate” him even though he fell well below the required skills. We were fortunate enough to be accepted into Rawson Saunders this fall. The second day of school my son pointed at his syllabus on the refrigerator and said his favorite subject was now LA (Language Arts). I was baffled. “LA, why that?” I asked. “Because I’m learning and they are really patient,” he said. Think about it, this was the second day of school… The third day he came home and read me a book. I cried. My son read a book. Without any push. It wasn’t easy for him but he did it. He goes to school now and I don’t have to drag out of him a short dialog about what he learned that day. He tells me about social studies, asks about history, art, science, and what he can accomplish. He doesn’t want to miss or be late for school. He doesn’t want me to pick him up too early because aftercare is so fun. We get hugs and smiles when we come onto campus. For us this has been a life changer not just for today but the future. I firmly believe he will be a picture of success you display on your doors someday because he now will have the tools to achieve all the great things he is capable of. I want to thank his whole team. I can’t even list them all. We feel connected. We feel empowered. I’m so thankful we have received this gift. It will stay with us a lifetime. —Anne Heitke, mom of EZ, 3rd grade

RAWSON SAUNDERS is an academically excellent, fully accredited and commended, full-curriculum, college prep, non-profit independent school for students with dyslexia in grades 1 through 12. It is the only school in central Texas of its kind and one of a few in the country. Rawson Saunders is recognized nationally as a leader in innovative, multisensory teaching methods tailored specifically to the way students with dyslexia—and in fact all children—learn best. The school’s mission is to develop the full potential of children with dyslexia through an extraordinary education experience. Rawson Saunders students not only learn and succeed, they thrive.

THE RAWSON SAUNDERS INSTITUTE (RSI) is a teacher-training and resource center for educators, parents, and those interested in learning the Rawson Saunders research-based, multisensory approach to teaching essential language skills. This approach is effective for all students, and especially those with language-learning difficulties, including dyslexia. RSI is a Neuhaus partner and is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA). If you would like to make a gift to support Rawson Saunders’ extraordinary purpose, please contact the development office. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this report.
