Psyche is a princess so beautiful that the goddess Venus becomes jealous. In revenge, she instructs her son Cupid to make her fall in love with a hideous monster; but instead he falls in love with her himself. He becomes her unseen husband, visiting her only at night. Psyche disobeys his orders not to attempt to look at him, and in doing so she loses him. In her search for him she undertakes a series of cruel and difficult tasks set by Venus. Cupid can eventually no longer bear to witness her suffering or to be apart from her and pleads their cause to the gods. Psyche becomes an immortal and in the end the lovers are married in heaven. Now cover the text and try to re-tell the story in your own words.

5/ The Story of St Valentine. In Roman times people celebrated a festival of love in the month of February. This festival was called Lupercalia. It was the festival of the Roman gods Pan and Juno. Young men and women played games to find a wife or a husband. I lived in Rome. My emperor was Claudius. He was not a good emperor. He only wanted to be at war so he demanded money and soldiers. Nobody wanted to join the army so the cruel Claudius decided to pass a law forbidding marriages. He thought if men didn’t marry they would not feel bad when leaving their wives and children behind. Nobody liked this law, least of all, a priest called Valentine. I met him when he ended up in one of the cells of the prison I worked in. He had been marrying couples in secret until the soldiers caught him. He knew this was going to happen sooner or later, but he didn’t regret it because he believed deeply in love. Many young people started to visit him in jail. Even my daughter started to visit him. They would talk and talk for hours on end. Poor Valentine left her a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. It said: “Love from your Valentine”. That’s how the tradition of exchanging love messages started. Valentine was sentenced to death and died on the 14th February , 269 AD
