A survey conducted by the L<A. County Human Relations Commission has documented the se

California, attending a white power party in Van Nuys, got into a name-calling match with several Black and Hispanic youths in a nearby supermarket parking lot. Geremi Rineman, 18, of Huntington Beach was paralyzed. Two other nazi skins, from Claremont and Slen-

In Volume III, Number 2 of T.T.T., we will

be focussing on the question of prisons. Jails and prisoners.

We have been getting some in

the federal and state prison system and local jails in propagating racism and discrimina

tion in our society.

We invite readers to submit letters and articles on this theme. The next issue of

PART is planning a demonstration concerning Tom Metrger's new hate lines, which are spring

ing up around the country thanks to a company called American Voice Retrieval.

By piggy-backing

on to this commercial operation, Metzger is proj®cting WAR'S racist hate—mongering into cities where he has no physical presence.

Call AVR in

Los Angeles to protest and demand they they drpp Metzger from their service. (213) 468-4949.

WAR

is using the company for hate-lines in Seattle, Phoenix, San Francisco and New York, and will soon be starting up in Chicago, Miami and other cities

Call the phone company in those

cities to protest as well.

I found an acquaintance of

Purdy's in Portland. When he read about the middle eastern slogans Purdy used (in killing Indochinese kids in a Stockton school) he was surprised. He said Purdy "hated Arabs, called them sand niggers."

According to the acquaintance, Purdy picked up an AYM newspaper, "liked it, said it was right and kept it." The cities where Purdy stayed on his trip be tween Portland and Stockton corresponds to the list of AYM chapter addresses printed in the back of that

Support the Resistance Conspiracy Case:

An Open Letter to the

Progressive Community The Contra war... the invasion of Grenada... increasing racist attacks... more violence against women, lesbians and gay men here in the U.S....

The U.S. government wonts us to ''forgive and forgef those responsible for these crimes. Yet some activists who opposed these crimes now face life in prison. One ofEd Meese's last £u:tions before leaving the Justice Department was to order the indictment of six long-time political activists on

charges of protesting U.S.domestic and intemational policies through "violent and illegal means." Like otherrecentpolitical trials,U.S.v. Whitehorn,et.al.,(The Resistance Conspiracy Case)targets domestic opponentsofillegal prac ticessuch as the contra waragainstNicaragua and the invasion ofGrenada. Theinvestigation ofthese defendantsis linked to therecentillegal FBI investigations ofCISPES and the Central America solidarity movementi Like them,it's char^terized by massive FBI misconductand illegality.

The six — Alan Berkman,Tim Blunk,Marilyn Buck,Linda Evans,Susan Rosenbeig, and Laura Whitehorn—are chaiged with being part of a networic of groups that claimed re^xmsibility fcx* bombings of government and military buildings in 1983-85,including the 1983 bombing of the U.S.Capitol after the invasion of Grenada. No one was injured in any of these £u:tions. The government makes no claim to know who ^tually carried out the bombings. Rather,it wants to convict the(tefendants by proving that they shared a"common purpose"of resisting illegal U.S. war crimes:"guilt by political association." The government has already put these defendants through fourteen separate political prosecutions. Five of the defendants are already serving sentences of up to 70 years. The sixth has been held in preventive detention for 2 Va years. This April, the trial judge dismissed all charges against three of the defendants on the grounds of double jeopardy, but the Justice Department has vowed to fight the decision. The government wants to stage a show trial to have a chilling effect on activists. It uses the guise ofsecurity to create an atmosphere of fearand intimidation to makea fair trial impossible. A bulletproofplexiglass wall in thecourtroom separates the defendantsfrom theirfamilies

and supporters. Surveillance cameras in the courtroom are trained on defendants and spectators. This is political persecution, not a criminal prosecution. The targets are people who have shown a deep commitment to human rights and social justice over many years. There may be political disagreements among us, but we are all part of the community of pet^le in the U.S. who have opposed and uied to stop the murderous, inhumane and illegal practices ofthe Reagan administration. The defendants inlhiscase, liketheotherpoliticalprisonersinthiscountiy, needtoberetumedtoourc(Hnmunities and not disappear into the prison system.

We mustlend our voices and support to ensure their rights—and thereby ourown. We ask you tojoin in a campaign to halt this vin^ctive prosecution.Stopping thislast prosecution brought by Reagan and Mcese can be an important step in dismantling their legacy ofa politicized criminal justice system and resurgent FBI.

• Drop this politically motivated indictment • Stop preventive detention/Release Laura Whitehorn on boil • Remove the bulletproof wall and surveillance cameras from the courtroom AO'-UP/Atlanta
