From the Editor It’s hard to believe that we are in the midst of State Fair as I write this. Summer always seems to fly in Upstate New York and it has been an active one for New York Holstein breeders. Quality at the shows this summer was tremendous and I congratulate everyone who participated. Hopefully the time off the farm was enjoyable with friends and family. The enthusiasm and energy of our youth certainly bespeaks a bright future for our Association. How many shows I attended this summer had MICHAEL McCAFFREY Champions owned by, and often bred by, junior members! That is exciting! Once again our October News will be distributed at World Dairy Expo and it is always enthusiastically looked for and read by folks from all over the world. I invite you to be a part of this issue and really help New York Holstein showcase our cattle and our members. Ad themes could include highlighting your show winners, your top cow families, your high genomic individuals, sale consignments, or breeding stock you have available. Ad deadline is Friday, September 15. You never know who is going to be reading your ad and looking for just what you have to offer them. In this issue are the All-New York, Junior All-New York, and Futurity entry forms. The All-New York/Junior All-New York’s are due October 16 – placings and photos. Any questions on placings, procedures, etc., let me know. Every year we impress our judges with the depth, quality, and number of participants in our contests. PLEASE enter those individuals that got pictured, even if they never left the county level. We give Best Bred & Owned awards in individual classes and I especially encourage group class entries. It will be a busy fall full of sales – once-in-a-lifetime herd dispersals reflecting generations of hard work and diligent breeding, club sales, and of course, the Harvest Sale. Each will have tremendous opportunities to enhance your breeding program. Carpe diem!

Book with Katie in 2012

Affectionately known as “Book,” Quiet-Brook-D Babybook-ET was a special cow from every perspective. She was Bookem’s highest scored daughter and left 62 daughters at Ideal Dairy. Those scored include 3 EX, 25 VG and 15 GP. Her highest GTPI daughter and her last natural calf, Hangtime Love, is +2624 GTPI and combines the two main cow families at Ideal Dairy, the “H’s” and the “L’s” (Babybook’s family). She also has two Montross sons at Select Sires – 7H12638 Benning (+2653 GTPI +2.18T) and 7H12639 Brady (+2622 GTPI +2.18T). A grandson, Quiet-Brook-D Balance-ET, is +2806 GTPI & +2.40T at Cogent Breeding. Babybook also made her impact in the show ring, doing well locally and then standing 3rd and BB&O in the Jr. 3-Yr-Old class at the 2014 NE Fall National Show in Springfield, MA. Everyone who saw her – at home or at a show – was taken by her outstanding type and quiet, loving demeanor. Her gentle presence will forever be remembered at Ideal Dairy.

Report Hello Holstein Followers,

9,000 miles have been put on my car this summer, it has flown by! KELLY REYNOLDS I am home for a few days getting ready for state fair and fall events after a busy summer of traveling. I had such a great time going to different county shows and events. Thank you to everyone who invited me to your shows and to the people that let me borrow a couch or a spare bedroom the last few months! While the weather has certainly been affecting all farmers in New York this summer it was great to see people excited about showcasing their Holstein cows, breeding programs, and youth at their county shows. The younger generation is thriving in the dairy business, please do whatever you can to keep these youth interested in not only showing cattle but agriculture in general. I saw it everywhere I went, non-farm youth showing and involved with the Holstein cow and it made me excited for the future. The shows I attended, no matter how big or small, all had quality Holsteins and exhibitors. It was great to meet so many New York Holstein members and see you and your families in action, working and showing cattle together. There is nothing quite like a Spring Calf Class or Little Britches Showmanship to remind you why you do what you do every day. The future of the Holstein Industry is bright! The summer kicked off with National Convention where we had a great New York contingency. Thank you to all of the delegates that served at National Convention. New York was well represented during Junior Convention. We had 21 youth competing in events. Laura Littrell was recognized as a YDJM winner and was fourth in Dairy Jeopardy. Danielle Herrick was second in the Intermediate Speaking Contest. The TriCounty Jr. Quiz Bowl team, coached by Seth Wadsworth with team members Blake Wadsworth, Phil Rea, Libby Swatling, and Adam King, ended up second overall after a tough final round. The Wyoming County Sr. Quiz Bowl team was fifth overall. The digital scrapbook finished fifth thanks to Taylor Currie’s efforts. Kayla Windecker and Steph McBath received National Holstein Women’s Scholarships as well. Congratulations to all of the participants, New York should be very proud of the talented, hard-working youth we had representing us. A huge THANK YOU goes out to the Dueppengiesser family and everyone at Ransom Rail for a fantastic picnic and sale. The sale crew had the cattle looking amazing and Ransom Rail looked top notch. Despite all the rain earlier in the week the picnic went off great thanks to 10 - NYN September 2017

the whole crew at the Dueppengiesser’s. It was good to see so many people supporting the sale and thank you for introducing yourself if we met at the picnic. We are looking for a host for the 2018 Picnic so if you or your farm is interested in hosting please let me know. You do not have to have a sale in conjunction with the event. Looking ahead to fall, Harvest Sale selections will be underway soon. If you have that special animal you’re considering consigning please let me or Dave Rama know. High genomic individuals, bred heifers, 2018 show prospects, a nice young cow, we’d love to have something from your breeding program so feel free to get in touch! I’ll be doing some traveling in late September and early October immediately after World Dairy Expo looking for consignments. Lynnette Wright and I have been working with the New England Holstein Association to make plans to attend their New England Dairy Summit as part of the 2017 NY Holstein Bus trip. There are more details on the trip in this issue of the News, it looks like it will be a fun weekend getaway. It’d be great to get a large group of New Yorkers to attend. They have some wonderful tours and events planned. There will be bus pick up locations in a few different areas of New York, so if you’re thinking about taking a weekend trip this fall this is the perfect opportunity! Good luck to everyone competing at the Big-E and Harrisburg. Feel free to send me pictures and results, I’d be glad to post them to the NY Holstein Facebook page. Don’t forget to get those All-New York forms in. We are looking at changing the All-New York awards ceremony this year at convention so we hope to have a great line up of award winners as usual. The 2018 Convention will be in Liverpool again at the Holiday Inn. It will be held over Martin Luther King weekend, mark your calendars to attend now. At last year’s convention we talked about abbreviating the weekend for the adults so the only thing on Thursday will be the ET Sale, then moving forward the meeting and banquet will be on Friday. On the Junior side of convention there was a request for DJM book workshops. While nothing formal has been planned if your county junior club would like to do a workshop I can try to come help youth with their books, just give me a call or an email and we can try to work something out. Tracy Rudgers and I are working on getting last year’s quiz bowl contest available for coaches to use. Please let me know and I can get it to your teams to study from. I am just a phone call or email away if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for the youth contests, let me know how we can make New York Junior Holstein the best youth program in the country! The New York Holstein Facebook page and website is continually being updated so check there for the latest events and happenings for our members. I enjoy posting pictures and updates from the shows as well as club events so feel free to send me pictures to put up. I’m just a call or email away if you need anything. Until next time, Kelly

BAA: A Method of Comparison The average classification score of Holstein cows varies according to age. To account for the variation, Breed Age Average (BAA) was developed. To compute BAA percent, the actual score is adjusted for age and stage of lactation. The adjusted score is divided by breed average and multiplied by 100. This means a cow with breed average score for her age group will have a BAA of 100. By using BAA, a breeder can compare the scores of cows of different ages. The breeder can also compare his herd as a whole to other herds without knowing the ages of cows in those herds. The lowest 10 percent of individual cow BAAs are excluded from an official herd BAA calculation. If the herd BAA of a particular herd has remained constant over a period of years, it does not mean the herd has not made improvement in type. It simply means this herd has made improvement at essentially the same rate as breed averages. It is possible for a herd to have made overall improvement in type even though the herd BAA has declined slightly. – John P. Connor Director of Type Evaluations Holstein Association USA

New York’s Top BAA Herds The following is a list of the top herds in New York ranked by Breed Age Average (BAA). Information found herein was provided by Holstein Association USA. To qualify for the list, a herd must have participated in a BAA-producing classification between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017. In cases in which a herd was scored more than once, the most recent BAA was used. A herd must have a minimum of 10 classified cows to qualify for the list. NYN September 2017 - 11

Hello Juniors! It’s crazy to think that the summer is already over! It flew by so fast, I still feel like I just came home from college. I hope that everyone’s summer has been eventful and full of adventures! This summer has been full of different opportunities and events, and Allison Herrick I know that I have personally travelled a lot and saw parts of the country I never even dreamed of. As I type this article, I am also working on getting ready to set up our 4-H club’s area at the Wyoming County Fair, and preparing myself for my last week of 4-H showing. It will be the closing of the summer for me, and the start of a brand new chapter as I head to college and start my sophomore year! Over the summer I had the amazing opportunity to attend my sixth National Holstein Convention, representing New York. Let’s just say that I was nothing less than impressed with the convention being hosted by Washington. It was a far way to travel, but the New York Holstein Association members represented our lovely state well! I was extremely happy to see how many of our members made it all the way out there for the convention and everyone had a fantastic time! In dairy jeopardy we had David Merrell and George Andrew Jr. competing in junior jeopardy. Laura Littrell was fourth in the intermediate jeopardy, Danielle Herrick was sixth, and Bryce Windecker also competed in the intermediate division. Paige Demun was competing in the senior jeopardy division. In the speech contests we had Zane Swatling in the junior division, Ellie Ainslie, Chrissy

Putman, and Danielle Herrick, who placed second, in the Intermediate Division, and Paige Demun and Matt Currie in the Senior Division. Our Tri-County Jr. Dairy Bowl team placed second overall, and the Wyoming County Sr. Dairy Bowl team placed fifth overall. Taylor Currie submitted our state digital scrapbook and earned a fourth place prize! Also, a big congratulations to Laura Littrell who was a National YDJM Finalist this year as well!! Our junior members did very well out there, so be sure to congratulate them if you see them. We also had a chance to have some fun and participate in tours, attend the national sale, go to a dance in the Space Needle, and have a great time together seeing the city and all that Washington had to offer! This summer, we also had the state picnic and sale at Ransom Rail Dairy, and the Dueppengiessers did a phenomenal job and were excellent hosts for the picnic. It was nice to see other junior members at the picnic and sale and get to talk to them and see all of the great lots that were offered at the sale. If you get a chance next summer, the picnic is a great event to attend and see other members from across the state! I also hope that all of your summer shows are going well! I usually only show at my own county fair, but I am happy to be showing at the state fair this year as well! I have loved visiting a few other local county fairs in my free time, and seeing other members and just watching how other counties conduct their shows. I know by speaking to some of you that this time of year is by far your favorite (it’s definitely mine too!), so I hope that you are all having a lot of fun showing off your animals and all of the hard work you have put in all summer! Sadly, it’s time to go back to school, and summer is coming to a close. But I wish you all a happy start to school this fall, and I hope you have had a great summer full of memories and are ready to start this coming year with the same momentum and enthusiasm that I see from you all whenever I see you! See you next month!!

Allegany Steuben Junior Club News By Natalie Capluzzi

Our senior Club recently hosted the 1st Allegany Steuben All-Breeds Show at our club barn in South Canisteo on the 12th & 13th of July. All six breeds of dairy cattle were represented in the inaugural show. Our junior members did very well during the competition. Winning Junior Champion of the Holstein Show was Erin Harkenrider. Winning Senior & Grand Champion of the Holstein show was Bryce Warriner. Reserve Senor & Reserve Grand Champion of the Holstein show was won by Jade Atherton. Priscilla Helgerson was named Honorable Mention as well. Bryce would go on to win Supreme Champion of the show with his cow. Congratulations Bryce, Jade, Priscilla, and Erin. We had several junior members participate in the showmanship competition on Wednesday night, and followed this up with a picnic dinner where everyone could catch up with each other. Winning Master Showman was Erin Harkenrider, and Bryce Warriner was named Reserve Master Showman. We have several juniors that will be participating at the Allegany County Fair, Steuben County Fair, the Erie County Fair, as well as the New York State Fair this year. We wish them the best of luck in the upcoming weeks. We look forward to seeing and competing with all of our friends at the shows this summer. We would like to congratulate Rachel Hoffer for being named the 2017-2018 Steuben County Dairy Princess. Rachel participates in activities with our county club, as well as Steuben County 4-H.

Stebbins. The picnic was held after Showmanship the night before and was enjoyed by the exhibitors, but sadly missed show day by the spectators. Two USA flags were displayed at the show ring and appreciated by all! A big thank you goes to Kate Helgerson for all her hard work and dedication. She passes the Jr. Advisor role on to Jess Houghtaling, assisted by Melonica Hoffer. Our new Steuben County Dairy Princess and Junior Holstein member, Rachel Hoffer, presented awards. Best Wishes to Jason Gerber and Betsey Howland on their recent marriage. Mark your calendar for the Club Sale, Saturday, October 21st at 11 a.m. Tentative date for the Banquet and Annual Meeting is Jan. 6, 2018. As we travel around the state, we are again fortunate to have such good crops. The unusual spring -summer weather has hurt numerous growers in many surrounding areas. We are pleased to hear the Kraft Campbell plant will remain open to market the milk produced locally. Our sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Joe Paddock, a Jasper native. When he was young he attended the shows and Holstein events and always had a special smile! He leaves his wife Tina and daughters Saige and Jaide. We wish a speedy recovery to Kate Helgerson and Tom Beach! Have a safe and productive harvest!

Allegany-Steuben Holstein Club News

By Carlise Bossard Congratulations to Andrew Merry on his graduation from Arkport Central School. He is headed to Cobleskill in the fall. The All-Breeds show was successful with 96 entries. Bryce Warriner had Grand Champion with his 4-YrOld and Best Bred and Owned Cow, Elm- V-F Braxton Shadow. Premier Breeder went to the Demun Family, and Jack Button and Family received Premier Exhibitor with their Jerseys. The torrential rain at times made Judge Brian Behnke’s and Mike McCaffrey’s jobs much more difficult. I guess it was a challenge to all that attended! Thanks again to Bethany King and her committee for all their hard work: Ron Button, Diedra, Tim, and Tom Harkenrider, Darleen Meehan, Teresa Marris, and Linda

Driver Receives Robert H. Rumler MBA Scholarship from Holstein Association USA Kelly Driver, Tully, New York, is the recipient of the 2017 Robert H. Rumler MBA Scholarship, administered by Holstein Association USA. The $3,000 scholarship is awarded annually to an individual pursuing their Master’s degree of Business Administration. Driver is working towards her degree at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York. Driver has been involved in the dairy industry her entire life. In 2009, the New York Junior Holstein Association awarded Kelly as an Honorary Junior Member. She received her Bachelor degree in Agricultural Business-Agricultural Science from the State University of New York at Cobleskill in December 1990. While in college she was involved with the Phi Theta Kappa Collegiate Honor Society. She enjoys volunteering with 4-H and FFA programs across the northeast, serving as a mentor or as an official judge at various competitions. During the 2016 National Holstein Convention, Kelly was the farm tour co-chairman. “Much of my career to date has been spent in agricultural sales and consulting as family farms grow and diversify to continue feeding the world. An MBA is the next step in my career as it will allow me to build a stronger background in finance and human resources and undoubtedly set me on course to be a stronger resource to the industry I am absolutely passionate about,” said Driver. For the past 11 years, Kelly has worked with ABS Global, Inc., most recently as a District Business Manager of the Northeastern States. In her capacity there, she is responsible for coaching and training sales staff, sales planning, and account and performance management. She also works closely with dairy farmers and the promotion of dairy cattle. Four years ago, Kelly implemented the Northeast Internship Program with ABS Global, Inc. “As I have begun working on my MBA, I have been utilizing skills learned and implementing them into my career. My background has been working with genetics and farm management practices, and the MBA classes are really stretching and expanding my skill set. As I spend more years working within agribusiness, I believe skills gained in the MBA program will be extremely valuable to help and consult in that process,” Driver explained. The Robert H. Rumler MBA Scholarship program was established to honor the former Holstein Association USA Executive Secretary at the time of his retirement after 36 years of service. Rumler believed that U.S. agribusiness, including production agriculture, needed and deserved the best trained, most highly qualified leaders that the nation’s educational system and practical experience could provide. For more information on the Robert H. Rumler MBA Scholarship, visit www.holsteinusa.com and click on Awards. Applications are due annually on April 15.

Breaking New Ground on a Solid Foundation

Exciting Changes at Osborne Family Farm

They have been at their current location since 1990. The 60-cow tiestall barn has served them well, allowing them to care for cows as they wanted to, build rich pedigrees, and develop strong cow families. They have bred over 30 Excellent cows to date with their Boanco/ Boanco OFF prefix and have had good success merchandizing 1520 animals each year. They have individuals in the herd that are 13th generation VG or EX, all 100% RHA, scored every seven months, sired by and bred to many of the Holstein Breed’s top bulls. Brothers Bruce and John Osborne are hard-working, detailoriented dairymen, passionate about their cows and their farm. Bruce has been a teacher at Harvey School in Katonah, New York for 40 years and his wife Dale is also involved at the school. Both are integral parts of the farm as well. Their son Brad graduated from Cornell in 2011 and has been a key player at the farm ever since. Daughter Erika is in her fourth year of vet school at Ohio State and continues to share her family’s passion for the farm. But anyone driving by Osbornes’ very attractive farmstead on Route 20 between Sharon Springs and Cherry Valley has seen big changes in the last year or so. These changes include a brand new facility in which to manage their herd and take them into the next generation at Osborne Family Farm.

A New Barn and New Technology

On June 13 of this year, Osbornes led the cows, one by one, to the new free stall barn with Lely robotic milker located just beyond

24 - NYN September 2017

the tie stall barn. That, Osbornes all agree, was the easy part. Now, everything in these cows’ lives has changed. No longer do they stand in one stall. No longer is their ration brought to them over the course of 11 trips around the barn with corn silage, haylage, or grain. No longer does the caretaker appear twice a day with a hand-held milker unit attached to a pipeline. No longer is water right next to their head. And these changes have affected both cow and caregiver alike. The family states that planning and preparation for the new facility was years in the making. Brad was the impetus behind it, the next family member to continue the rich heritage of his father and uncle, and his grandfather, Clayton, before them. Brad researched for about four years, studying other barns in designing this one. He created a budget and he worked with financers. Energy efficiency and labor efficiency were paramount. But top on the priority list, as has been the case on this farm for 27 years, were the cows and their comfort. The new barn and everything about it centers on the cows. “We built to create the best environment possible for the cows,” says John, and it shows. Curtains on the side allow for free flow of air. The barn is bright and airy, with wide alleys and big stalls with the same mats they had in the tie stall barn. Headlocks assist with breeding and vet checks. The cows are obviously happy here and the adjustment period, though still unfolding, is going well. The cows now consume a TMR, largely forage-based as they have always fed. In addition, the cows receive grain at the robot during milking, an added incentive

Brad Osborne enjoying the new construction at Osborne Family Farm.

to increase usage beyond the twicea-day schedule they were used to. The Osbornes are quick to note that the robot’s consistency is one of its greatest assets. The robot milks every cow the same. In addition, the information generated by the robot and the monitors on beams in the barn provide Brad with information regarding rumination, heats, conductivity, and data on each cow’s production, quarter health, and many, many other things. A group of breeding-age heifers occupies one end of the barn and by next August, Osbornes will reach 120 cows and two robots, all through internal growth. A closed herd for nearly 20 years, Osbornes have used sexed semen in 90 percent of their matings for the past three years. “We have excellent conception with sexed semen,” they agree, and John is quick to point out that Brad’s presence and involvement in the breeding program has “been night and day for us” in terms of seeing

cows in heat and getting them bred back on time. Their heifer crop looks terrific – strong, upstanding heifers with good width, body capacity, and very correct feet & legs.

An Impressive Herd

Bruce and John have maintained a 100% RHA herd, something very important to them. The entire Boanco OFF herd goes back to five cows and the pedigrees they have built and the cows they have bred bespeak their passion for outstanding cattle. For the past 15 years, they have been very conscious of breeding for components, as the cow on the cover indicates! Boanco OFF Lucky Star Wilma (2E-90, EX-MS) has five records over 1000 fat to date and lifetime credits of 157,440 5.4 8479 3.5 5584. Her VG-88, Journalist dam averaged 4.7% fat with 145,000M lifetime. Wilma has two Excellent daughters including Boanco OFF Shottle Dino (EX-91). When asked what bull has had the greatest impact on the herd, John quickly states “Shottle!” The brothers have bred eight Excellent Shottle daughters and, not surprisingly, they continue to use him. Bruce also notes that Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation also worked very well here, and a most influential cow, Boanco OFF Rorae Melody-ET (VG-86), finished with a lifetime of 349,000M and left four EX and three VG daughters in the herd. Melody’s dam was a VG88 Walkway Chief Mark, followed by an EX-GMD Carlin-M Ivanhoe Bell. Melody is buried on the farm, a clear indication of the impact she had here and Osbornes’ affection for her. Now, the favorite young cows here are the Seagull-Bay SupersireET 2 and 3-year-olds – fancy, great-uddered young cows that really milk. John describes them as “eating machines” with good temperaments and outstanding production. One that stands out is Boanco OFF SS Kweenie-ET (VG), a second-lactation Supersire that already has two milking daughters by Defender and Mogul. There are currently 35 Supersire daughters on

the farm! Osbornes have focused on using high genomic bulls for the past few years with really good results. Bulls seeing heavy use here include Bandares, Duke, Delta, Delta Lambda, Silver, Modesty, and Cavalier. A heifer the family really likes is a Yoder daughter just fresh with three Excellent dams behind her. There is also a good number of Red & Whites in the herd, mainly sired by Carson-Red, Moses, and Captain. Osbornes genomic test a good number of their cattle, with individuals in the 2600+ GTPI range and growing. When asked what kind of cow they are striving to breed, John, Bruce, and Brad all agree that a 60inch cow with lots of width, depth of rib, an outstanding udder, and very correct feet & legs is what they are aiming for with each mating. Bruce emphasizes that they have always strived for longevity in their cattle. It helps build pedigrees and allows them to merchandize more cattle. Health traits have also become very important criteria in their breeding decisions, with somatic cell and fertility index at the top of the list. Heifers are bred at about 820 pounds of body weight and are calving at 21-22 months of age on average.

The Future

A year from now, Osbornes plan to be at their new barn’s capacity of 120 cows, milked by two Lely robots. They are fortunate to have the land base they need. Their 400-acre farm has 300 acres of cropland and they rent another 50 acres. As Bruce states, “cows are very important to us” and the appreciation and affection Osbornes have for their cattle, all the while striving to breed a better next generation, will continue. Future goals, in addition to building pedigrees and breeding higher genomic animals, are to merchandize 30-40 head each year privately or through consignment sales. Using the best bulls they can with the criteria they require, the Osborne family will continue to be one of the fine breeding establishments within the O-H-M

Club and the Boanco OFF prefix will continue to do them proud. As the next generation takes more control of the reigns from the previous, there is a quiet sense of pride and fulfillment shared by John, Bruce, and Brad. The farm is moving to the next phase of its life, building on a rich foundation, eagerly looking to what the future will be.

The O-H-M Club Sale

Brad Osborne currently serves as a director for the O-H-M Holstein Club and the Osbornes will be hosting the 69th O-H-M Club Sale on Saturday, October 14. The O-H-M Sale has enjoyed a rich history through the years and innumerable success stories can be told about cattle from this sale. The sale has been held at different sites, and this year, the Osbornes will welcome sale goers to their farm as first-time hosts. Dan Menendez and Cyrus Conard are serving as Sale CoChairmen for this year’s sale and a terrific lineup is already taking shape with lots of type and depth of pedigree being offered. An open house and semen auction are again scheduled for Friday evening, October 13th. The tie stall barn here will make an outstanding setting for showcasing consignments, in addition to using the heifer barn nearby. Sale attendees will have the opportunity to see the newly-built facility and hear about the management of the farm, in addition to seeing a terrific herd of cattle– bred for type and production, with fine pedigrees to match.

Exceptional quality classes at summer shows foretell a fantastic display of function, utility, and endurance for the big fall show season. Enjoy a few moments of glory; but savor the camaraderie for a lifetime!!

Class Changes Coming for the 2018 National Holstein Shows The Holstein Association USA, Inc. board of directors made some progressive moves to update the list of uniform classes for 2018 Fall National Holstein Shows. The Fall Yearling class will be removed and an optional Summer Calf class will be added. The 2017 Fall National Holstein Show classes will remain unchanged. Fall Shows are defined as the Midwest Fall Show at Minnesota State Fair and those held afterwards, including the Northeast Fall Show in Springfield, Mass., the Eastern Fall Show in Harrisburg, Pa., the Mideast Fall Show in Louisville, Ky., and the International Show at World Dairy Expo. For junior recognition, transfers must be received by August 1 for animals in the Summer Calf class only. For all other classes, the June 1 junior transfer deadline remains. “Registered Holsteins have continued to make great strides in profitability, and especially fertility. We feel that Fall Yearlings should be in milking form by the fall show season. Adding a Summer Calf class will offer another opportunity for exhibitors, especially Junior members, to participate in the show,” says Show Committee Chairman Mike Jones. The Uniform Class List can be found in the Holstein Association USA, Inc. annual Show Program. It can be found at www.holsteinusa. com, National Shows, then National Show Program. The program also contains rules that National Holstein Shows are expected to follow to maintain that designation.

Anderson Wins National Cream of the Crop Award The National Cream of the Crop Award recognizes the top 75 Junior-owned Registered Holstein cows that have produced the highest combined pounds of fat and protein during a 305-day lactation. To be eligible for this award, cows must meet the following criteria: be owned by a current Holstein Association USA Junior member; have an RHA of at least 87%; be enrolled in the TriStar production records program; and have a 305-day or less record of over 30,000 pounds of milk completed during the calendar year, with the entire lactation being completed while the animal is under youth ownership. Once the pool of eligible cows is determined, cows are ranked on total pounds of fat and protein produced during the lactation. Dylan Anderson of Cazenovia, NY earned 6th place nationally with Ransom-Rail Gold Cando-ET (VG-88). Cando is a daughter of Braedale Goldwyn from an EX-90 Calbrett Canuck-ETS followed by an EX-95-4E, CAN Cousteau, then four more VG & EX dams. Other recognitions that cows owned by Holstein Association USA Junior members can achieve include the National Junior Breeder of an Excellent Cow Award, National Junior Breeder of a Multiple “E” Excellent Cow Award, National Junior 150,000 Pound Lifetime Production Award, and the National Junior 200,000 Pound Lifetime Production Award. All eligible cows are automatically screened for these recognitions on an annual basis. NYN September 2017 - 35

2019 NEW YORK HOLSTEIN FUTURITY NUMBER 43

PURPOSE: The New York Holstein 2-Year-old Futurity is a project of the New York Holstein-Friesian Association to stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of outstanding Registered Holsteins. PROCEDURES: This 2-Year-old Futurity is based upon the nomination of an animal by an owner, to be shown in the 2-Year-old Futurity class at a designated show in the year that she is an eligible 2-Year-old. Three nominations are required for each animal that competes. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner and must be made on regulation entry blanks, accompanied by specified fees, and meet nomination dates and other rules as set forth below. The accumulated monies, received from the three nominations, shall make up the purse for any one year and shall be divided as prize money among the exhibitors, according to the placings as set forth below. FUTURITY ENTRIES: The show is charged with the enforcement of all the rules and the responsibilities of the operation of the Futurity. RULES AND CONDITIONS ELIGIBILITY: Any registered Holstein female, 87% or higher, bred by a member of the New York Holstein-Friesian Association (senior or junior) that was born from September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017 is eligible for Futurity Number 43. On first nominations an animal may have papers pending, however, on second nominations, registration numbers must be available. FEES: 1st payment of $3.00 with nomination shall be paid by November 1, 2017. 2nd payment of $8.00 with nomination shall be paid by November 1, 2018. 3rd payment of $10.00 shall be postmarked as instructed on the third nomination letter or 30 days prior to the showing of the Futurity class. NOMINATIONS: Any member, resident or not, in good standing of the New York Holstein Association may nominate any number of eligible heifers. The second and third payments shall likewise be mailed and postmarked not later than the due dates. PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the New York Holstein Futurity as nomination fees, subsequent payments or contributions, less the actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity fund and used only for Futurity purposes and shall be withdrawn only under bona fide signature of the treasurer of the New York Futurity, with the approval of the Futurity Committee. The purse in this event will be divided among the top twenty placings under the formula listed below. If less than 20 animals are shown, all monies shall be paid by dividing proportionately between all exhibitors in futurity #43. 1st place winner............................20% 2nd place ......................................12% 3rd place........................................09% 4th place........................................08% 5th place........................................06% Next 5 places........................04% each Next 5 places........................03% each Next 5 places........................02% each REFUNDS: When nomination fees and subsequent payments in connection with the Futurity are received, they are committed to the purse for this event and no refunds will be made, whether or not the animal is shown or its eligibility discontinued by the owner. In the event, however, that any condition should arise which prevents the showing of the Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and refunds made to persons owning females that have been nominated, their share of all monies accrued after the deduction of actual expenses in the promotion of this Futurity. MAINTAINING ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility after an animal has been nominated as a calf is maintained by making subsequent payments on the due dates as specified heretofore. This Month

in the NY Holstein News 1959 (Volume XIV) In a talk given by the Master Breeder of Colony Farm given at the Saskatchewan Dairy Convention in 1946, reprinted by Holstein-Friesian World, P. H. Moore expounded on several principles on breeding sound, functional, profitable cattle. Highlights from his presentation included the following: - “The meanest, lowest, most miserable critter in the world is the registered scrub for she has you beaten before you start. If you find one in your herd, eat it – it will be the cheapest and best meat you ever ate.” - “A dairy cow without an udder is just beef, but an udder, be it ever so good, without a good cow attached to it is just tankage.” - “One of the greatest fallacies is that every male is born to be a sire.” - “One high record on the dam of a bull, where no others are known, is not any better than no record at all. To get a true estimate, one wants all the information on all sides and add to this the unrelenting pull of the breed average.” - “I don’t know much about in-breeding because up to date I haven’t had cattle that didn’t have some things in their inheritance that I didn’t want to intensify too much.” - “I firmly believe in and for 30 years have line-bred and selected, pushing back the faults and bringing to the front as much as possible the things wanted. It works.” - “No matter what the price, you can’t build your herd if someone picks the tops each year. Sell good ones but stick to your good families because from these comes your future.” Two hundred and fifty-two Holsteins, registered and grades, an increase of 66 over the previous year, helped the 9th Annual New York Artificial Breeders’ Cooperative Cattle Show reach the unprecedented number of 531 44 - NYN September 2017

animals for all breeds exhibited. The show was held at the Cooperative’s headquarters on Judd Falls Rd. in Ithaca over two days. William K. Hepburn, manager of the James Canyon Ranch, Genoa, NV, placed the Holstein classes. Irene Shanley Pabst Rag Apple, a daughter of Shanley Bessie Supreme looking much younger than her 10 years, won the grandmother class easily and came on to cop the Senior & Grand Champion honors for Bennett Farms, Kent, NY. Reserve Senior & Reserve Grand Champion was the winning aged cow, Genesee Royal Bridget, a daughter of Pebble Beach Prince Kate, exhibited by Abbey of the Genesee, Piffard, NY. The Seneca County Holstein Club had its first Black and White Show in Waterloo. Previously the club had been linked with Cayuga County, but held an independent show for the first time, with 72 head appraised by Judge J. M. Fraser of Spring Farm, Ontario. Lawara Farms had both the Grand & Reserve Grand Champions.

1980 (Volume XXXV)

Four New York-bred and successfully proven A.I. bulls graced the cover. Bendmead Magic of Lin-Con (EX-92-GM), DoreighFarms Mighty Falcon (VG-87-GM), Lawcrest Law Man (EX), and Clinton Camp Majesty (GP-ST), were all making their mark throughout the United States and Canada. Selections were underway for the Genetic Harvest Bred Heifer Sale to be held in Canandaigua in November, sponsored by New York Holstein-Friesian Association. Suggested requirements for the sale were: Dam: GP if scored, and at least 16,000 lbs. of milk actual or M.E. and a record greater than the herd average for milk. Heifers were to be fresh or due 45 days prior to or following the sale. The Summer Dreams by

Dreamstreet Sale held June 23 in Syracuse averaged $10,257 on 103 full lots. The number one cow in the catalog had to be withdrawn due to a health complication, but her replacement proved a most worthwhile substitute. C Spring Farm Fond Rose, an Excellent 5-year-old daughter of No-Na-Me Fond Matt from the famous show cow and brood cow, Spring Farm Citation Rosetta (EX-1142f), was several weeks away from calving to Agro Acres Marquis Ned and sold for a record price of $250,000 to Steve Potter and Associates, Seaside Dairy, Edgartown, MA. The first animal in the ring was Dreamstreet Golden Adonis-ET, a year-old son of Tidy Burke Elevation from Hilltopper Citation Gay (4E-96), famous daughter of Rosafe Citation R from Hilltop Ivanhoe Gaiety (3E92). He was purchased by Ditta Luigi Muzzio, Milano, Italy, for $102,000. The crowd of over 600 people enjoyed a pre-sale barbeque hosted by sale managers Hanover Hill Sales and Service. The 5th Sugar Creek Invitational held at Sugar Creek Farm, Dansville, averaged $3629 on the 47 head offered. Top seller at $15,000 was Sugarcreek-Vu Apache Queen (VG88), a Chapel Bank Apache daughter from a 2E Bootmaker dam. Carrying a contract to a group of Holland breeders, she was consigned by sale host E. Philip Saunders and the choice of Jim Repard, Holcomb, NY. The Jefferson County Holstein Club sponsored a special section in the News, totaling 31 pages of breeder advertising, herd visits, and local tributes. The county’s first Master Breeder Award was given to H. Ben Mitchell of Penet Holsteins, LaFargeville. Ben was well known in the area for breeding and developing a great herd of Registered Holsteins including Whirlhill Q Rag Apple Ariel (EX92), a granddaughter of Audrey Posch (EX-93-GMD), who was also a New York State Production Leader with her record of 26,753 4.2 1134, fourth in the Nation. Ben served as president of the New York HolsteinFriesian Association from 19561958 and held several offices within the Jefferson County Holstein Club.
