hether you dream of opportunities for adventure or prefer restful relaxation, the Julian area offers a refreshing change of pace every season of the year. With activities such as the Taste of Julian, the big Fourth of July Parade, Sip of Julian, Grape Stomp Festa, daffodil and wildflower shows, music festivals, a quilt show, art shows and more — the

Revel in Riches at Gold Rush Days — Angela McLaughlin
A
s a former gold mining town, Julian has a rich and fascinating history. To celebrate this history, the Julian Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Gold Rush Days on April 1 and 2. The event will be held at Julian Mining Company, 4444 Highway 78 in Wynola. Guests will have the opportunity to learn more about the town’s past while enjoying a variety of activities, including tomahawk throwing demonstrations, historic skits, candle dipping — and of course, gold panning — among many others. Information about the event may be found at www.juliangoldrushdays.com. “Julian Gold Rush Days is a great opportunity to ‘turn back the clock’ and give visitors an idea of what Julian was like in its early days,” said Tracy Turner of the Chamber. “It’s entertainment for the whole family!” n

As Good As Gold
Ever since the discovery of gold in 1869, Julian has been a popular destination for gold-seekers. Two local companies offer visitors the chance to catch a glimpse of the precious metal and even hone their skills at panning gold and gems.
Eagle Mining Co. ~ Julian Established in the 1870s, the Eagle and High Peak mines, operated by Eagle Mining Co., offer tours of the historic hard-rock tunnels, where experienced guides explain how gold is extracted. “We stop along the way and look at the California five-stamp mill, showing them how to process and extract the gold from the quartz,” said co-owner Paul Nelson. “That’s why the town is here, because of the Gold Rush.” The mines, gift shop and museum are a showplace for tools, machinery, vintage vehicles, gemstones, minerals and fossils — making it easy for guests to visualize how miners lived in the 1800s. Julian Mining Company ~ Wynola For a hands-on gold-finding experience, Julian Mining Company is a place where guests of all ages enjoy panning for gold and gemstones. Admission covers unlimited panning of real Banner Grade pay dirt. “You get a chance to pan for and keep real gold, and you get a lesson on how to do it,” said owner Ryan Cross. “Generally, once you know how, you’ll find gold in every pan.” Julian Mining Company has a petting zoo, a gift shop and more. In addition, its educational field trips are an exciting way to learn about American history. “One of the biggest excitements for kids is screening — or sluicing — for gems,” said Cross. Bring Your Appetite to the Taste of Julian

here’s more to Julian than apples! Prepare your stomach and get ready to enjoy some delicious eats — the ninth annual Taste of Julian will take place April 8. The event offers guests a chance to sample cuisine from some of Julian’s finest dining establishments. Mouthwatering appetizers, entrees, desserts and beverages await you on this tempting tour. As the Taste is a self-guided tour,
it will provide participants the chance to sample some of the local cuisine as well as peruse many of the area’s other attractions — such as its delightful shops. “A ticket to Taste of Julian is like a passport to sample menu specialties from Julian’s most popular eateries,” said Tracy Turner of the Julian Chamber of Commerce. The Julian Chamber sponsors the Taste as a fundraising event to benefit the protection and enhancement of Julian’s historic district. Information is

trap on your dancing shoes and get ready for a good time — the 11th annual Julian Dance and Back Country Barbecue is sure to be a blast! Presented June 10 by the Sons of American Legion Post 468, the event will feature several live Western bands for your listening and dancing pleasure. “Hey, what’s a small town without a big dance?” said Sons of the American Legion member Bill Fink. Performing will be Nancarrow and Three Chord Justice, among others. “All the proceeds from the dance go back into the community,” Fink added. “There is a giant dance floor and stage, with professional sound and lighting.”
The dance will run from 2 to 10 p.m. at Menghini Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. Information and advance tickets may be found at www.juliandance.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. Wild About Wildflowers
T
he Julian area has about 857 varieties of plants, and most of them are wildflowers. Perhaps that’s why the Julian Woman’s Club has been hosting its annual Wildflower Show for more than 90 years. The theme of this year’s show, to be held May 10 to 13, will be “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” with a focus on the plants’ many uses. Wildflowers may be beautiful, edible, medicinal, poisonous or thought of as weeds, according to event organizers. But all serve a purpose. Club members will pick the flowers throughout the greater Julian area, and
their bouquets will be displayed at the show labeled with the region where they were collected. This year, there will be an Ugly Weed Contest, and the winner will receive a prize. Students from local schools will be invited to display their artwork and other related projects. The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. downstairs in Julian Town Hall, 2129 Main St. Admission is free, and donations are welcome. With this year’s precipitation already above average, the number and variety of flowers on display is expected to be amazing! n

hat’s a night owl to do when Main Street businesses shut down and the town goes dark? Julian residents know that this may be the best time to enjoy mountain life. The sights and sounds of dark nights are what the Dark Sky Network and Curiosity Peak Observatory are all about. Because Julian is one of the few places in San Diego County where the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye, visitors who head down the hill between sunset and moonrise are missing one of the most beautiful views the town has to offer. With a mission to enjoy and preserve the dark sky, the Dark Sky Network schedules star parties, sometimes in conjunction with family evening hikes at the Santa Ysabel Preserve, where folks can
gaze at the stars through telescopes or binoculars. Seasonal information about the night sky and scheduled activities — weather permitting — may be found online at www. juliandarkskynetwork.com. Built by passionate amateur astronomers in 2014, Curiosity Peak Observatory is a mountaintop home to telescopes fitted with digital cameras for the pursuit of astrophotography. Plans for the observatory are to expand its outreach and include an amateur radio astronomy facility to monitor the sun, Jupiter and the galactic plain. The astronomers welcome collaborators to their mission of enjoying and gaining a deeper understanding of the greater universe. Visits to the to the observatory are available by appointment. Sponsored by the Julian Chamber of Commerce, the event is set for Sept. 2 at Menghini Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. This event offers fun for the whole family with a variety of shopping opportunities, live music, delicious food, exciting games and — don’t forget — a chance to stomp in the tub!
The Festa will feature two large stomping tubs, one for adults and another for children. Adults ages 21 and older may also enjoy wine tasting opportunities from a number of participating local wineries. Post-Parade Party
Immediately after the parade, American Legion Post 468 will open its doors to the public for the biggest backyard barbecue in Julian. One thousand pounds of beef, slow-roasted in a deep pit, is on the menu, served up with all the fixings in the dining hall and on the outdoor patio. Entertainment provided by folk singers and dance bands will keep you tapping your toes and spinning your partner well into the evening hours. With a little luck, you’ll time your visit just right and get to hear a local veteran play a tear-jerking rendition of “Taps” on his trumpet. Nothing says patriotism like supporting our proud military, both active and retired, which is what you do when you dine at the American Legion Post, located at 2503 Washington St. In turn, the Post uses the proceeds to benefit local youth programs and scholarships. utumn in Julian is a beautiful time of year — the leaves are changing color, the air is growing cooler, and apple season is cause for celebration.

What better way to celebrate the harvest season than by attending the annual Julian Apple Days Festival? Sponsored by the Julian Chamber of Commerce, the festival is set for Sept. 23 and 24 at Menghini Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. This two-day celebration provides much in the way of entertainment and offers fun for the whole family. It is loaded with activities, such as apple displays, an antique tractor display, music, dancing, children’s games and activities, gold-panning demonstrations, food and merchandise vendors, and — for the adults — a beer and wine garden. The festival also features two muchanticipated activities: the coronation of Mr. and Mrs. Apple Days and the Julian Woman’s Club Pie Baking contest. “Of course, there will also be a pieeating contest,” says Tracy Turner of the Chamber. “Whether you are an amateur or professional pie-eater, you won’t find a better pie to eat anywhere!” As Julian is famous for its apple pies, this declaration rings true. Throughout the two-month apple season, visitors will find a variety of events to enjoy, including U-pick apple orchards, and the Old Time Melodrama and Olio performance weekends in October at Town Hall, 2129 Main St.

Post Offices of the Past — David Lewis

ot long after the discovery of gold in 1869, the citizens of Julian City set about getting themselves a post office. It was established Aug. 8, 1870. Chester Gunn was the postmaster. Gunn had previously operated a Pony Express service, which only lasted a few months. The fledgling city of Branson, located just east of Julian, established its post office on Aug. 19, 1870.

Branson, you say? In the beginning, there were actually four locations in the area that called themselves a “city” — Coleman City, Branson City, Eastwood City and Julian City. Three disappeared into the veil of history, and only Julian survived. There were other post offices in the area. Banner Post Office, located at the bottom of Banner Grade, was established July 27, 1873. While Banner did grow
into a small town, its post office was finally discontinued in 1907. If you drive to Julian on Highway 78 through Ramona, you will pass the site of the former Witch Creek Post Office along the way. The office was established March 3, 1893, and operated until 1938. The Witch fire erased the post office building in 2007. The old Santa Ysabel Post Office building survives as a reality office. It was established June 26, 1889. A new post office building located nearby serves the area. The settlement of Wynola once had a post office. A modernized version of the building still stands at the north end of the valley. In 1907, a counter front and mail drop were built for the Julian Post Office, which served customers at different locations over the years. Its previous location, Forester’s Hall, was torn down in the late 1960s. The counter front and some of the mailboxes are on display at the Julian Pioneer Museum. The new Julian Post Office is located at the east end of town at 1785 Highway 78 — for now. n David Lewis is president of the Julian Pioneer Museum board of directors and operator of Historical Tours of Julian.

The entertaining Julian Melodrama, pictured, brings laughs to audiences year after year, with its old-time script, the antics of the Triangle Club Chorus, and the classic hero, heroine and villain. Artists and art lovers look forward to the Open Studios Tour Oct. 14 and 15, which gives guests the opportunity to peek inside the private studios where artists create their spectacular pieces. Musical acts and dance troupes will entertain, carolers stroll through town, a living Nativity is staged. Santa Claus will arrive on a fire truck, delighting guests of all ages.
