2010 A Brief Tour of Play2Train

Prologue Dear reader, I wanted to share with you a truly exciting adventure that lead to the emergence of a virtual learning environment, Play2TrainTM. Coming through this experience has strengthened my belief that it is not only much cheaper but also much easier than it used to be for individuals or small teams to develop their own virtual reality applications. Play2TrainTM was implemented on the Second Life platform. This platform and Opensim are two virtual reality infrastructures that future developers need to consider seriously. I realized that an academic paper would probably not be an effective medium for sharing information about our design efforts. Its inherent real estate limitation for visual content would have made it hard to present our ideas effectively. It was clear, at least to me, that it would be probably easier to share our experience through a visual story/graphic novel. I am hoping that this visual documentary will uncover some of our design choices and their underlying motivations. Since I did not know where to start or even end this document, I thought that I would construct one around a tour of Play2TrainTM. So here I am playing the role of a tour guide. Welcome.
