WHY DESIGN?

Disruptive Creativity

From a young age I have always had an appreciation for art, sculpture and form. However it was only until my later years I started to realise that with form, must come functionality. From that point, I wanted to be responsible for designing things that not only looked aesthetically pleasing, but were functionally sound and feasible to manufacture in the real world. .......................................................................................................................... “Any activity becomes creative when the doer cares about doing it right, or better. (John Updike).

THE BRIEF 'If JosephJoseph® were to redesign the Occasion Houseware Gifts Range, what ideas would they propose?' Andy Smith, Design Manager at IC Innovations Ltd.

Aim: Design, develop and create 3D models and 2D drawings for a large range of products that could be retailed by IC Innovations Ltd in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The completed proposals would be marketed in 2015 as the new Occasion Houseware Gifts Range. What is Occasion? Part of the housewares range offered by IC Innovations, available in woods, ceramics, porcelain and slate. The 'Classical Oak Range' offers users a traditional style, whereas the 'Occasion Range' provides users who are looking to purchase houseware gifts with a modern twist.

CAN IT BE MADE? 15 concepts were generated and presented to the company, offering innovative and different ideas to their existing range. However due to various constraints, the designs had to be simplified as they were too daring and bold to be marketable. Therefore, between full time office work and out of office freelancing, 31 simpler products were proposed by the Design Manager. From here, 3D models were generated in CAD as well as all the 2D drawings needed to prototype and manufacture the approved products for market. Result: All drawings were successfully sent to the manufacturers in China.

MARKET TRENDS 50% contains household bin products (for use in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and other areas).

50%

a) Smaller ticket items have fared better over the lean years & the trends to spend more leisure time at home, as well as new enthusiasm for cooking & baking, help encourage consumers to buy things for their kitchen & living areas. Mintel Reports - Homewares - UK - January 2014.

Consumer Attitudes to Purchasing Kitchenwares (2014)

b) The main driver for purchasing homewares can be summarised as 'affordable functionality'. 'Uniqueness' & 'latest trend' is considered the least important, with only 19% agreeing with this statement.

RESEARCH CONCLUSION: The final products needs to be: • functional • affordably priced • minimal in its design

53

a) Oversized liners for bin's capacity is inefficient...

b) Current bin designs have fixed apertures...

c) Trapped air from liner, user has to place hands inside...
