KASM says the mining process, which could involve heavy duty dredging, threatens the seabed ecology, potentially impacting on waves, coastal erosion and fisheries, as well as the future of the Maui’s dolphin.

Several Raglan locals have joined Rastovich on his journey north, including KASM chairman Phil McCabe. McCabe also walked and cycled 170km of coastal South Taranaki earlier this month, along with partner Bernadette Gavin and 11-yearold daughter Sequoia, to further raise awareness of the environmental effects of seabed mining.

Rastovich will be jumping back onto his custom-built 17-foot paddleboard this week to continue his voyage up the coast. He hopes to reach Piha by Saturday 1 December, where a “Love Your Ocean Day” is planned with the local community.

Only hours before their annual Honours Night – a celebratory occasion when the full formal uniforms and medals come out – local firefighters were getting down and dirty dealing to a scrub fire at Ngarunui Beach.

But all were back at the station and scrubbed up to the nines for the 8pm start to an evening which recognised five firemen’s length of service in the local brigade.

Coincidentally, chief fire officer Kevin Holmes chose in his remarks last Saturday night to compare the brigade and its work in 2012 with that of a decade previously – and 2002 just happened to also be a year when firefighters were called out on their Honours Night.

And, coming at 8.45 pm this was a callout which really did disrupt proceedings, even though it turned out in the end to be a false alarm.

As Kevin revealed in his remarks, not a lot has changed in some other ways too over the decade. Brigade numbers are up from 19 to around 24, and callouts are also up by a fairly modest number – from 58 to 78 so far this year.

But he noted too that only five of 19 firefighters which Raglan boasted back in 2002 were still with the local brigade – and it was two of those five who were among those honoured last Saturday night.

They were deputy chief officer Frank Turner, who was presented with a sixth two-year gold bar to pin on his gold medal ribbon – as the gold medal signifies 25 years it all adds up to 37 years’ service – and Bob MacLeod, who got a third two-year silver bar on the ribbon of his silver medal marking five years’ service.

That means Bob, whose father was chief fire officer here in the 1980s, has now served 11 years with the local brigade.

Others honoured on Saturday night were Logan Soanes – who got his five-year silver medal – and David Thompson and Dirk De Ruysscher, who were presented with their three-year certificates.

Doing the honours in handing out the awards was the unofficial “mother” of the brigade, Queenie Tukiri, whose husband Bill was a Raglan brigade original and a voluntary firefighter for more than 25 years. “We all love her to bits,” Kevin told the Chronicle.

Meanwhile one of those honoured on Saturday, Dirk, is also completing a senior fire officer programme which will mean that he –

Sika performing with his Didjeridoo

A self decribed musician, performer, recording artist and storyteller will play one show only this Thursday night (29th) at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. Sika, who is currently on his ‘Inside Out Tour’ literally leapt into the UK music scene over twenty years ago and was immediately recognized for the natural power of his performances.

He calls in ancient wisdom as he plays Didjeridoo, drums, flutes & percussive instruments from all over the world. His signature is Didjeridoo, drum and percussion played at the same time. His performance is highly entertaining to watch. He dances as he plays Didjeridoo gesturing with his hands and interacting with his eyes.

The Inside Out tour includes new music created in the studio where he lives in Golden Bay, South Island.

Sika has toured extensively in the US, Europe, Australia and NZ. He was in the UK band ‘Global’ who played Ambient Trance music and ‘Walk Electric’ a Folk Dance fusion band. He occasionally plays with UK/AUS band ‘Kangaroo Moon’.

He has played with Aztec Elders at The Sun Pyramid Teotihuacán, México and with Aboriginal people in the Australian desert. He has entertained at Glastonbury Festival and played at Westminster Abbey, NZ Embassy and Commonwealth Institute.

Sika was in at the beginning of the Didjeridoo’s renaissance and has added his own unique colour to the global music scene. His partnership, Caitlin & Sika, created five albums which took them around the world over eighteen times.

Sika is at home with the indigenous peoples and has made many extraordinary friendships. The elders and shamanic teachers have gifted him knowledge. He lived in a tipi for ten years where he learned to be with the elements and his music is an expression of his deep connection to nature.

It Probably Won’t Heal In Time

West Coast Health update The festive season is almost upon us all again. In preparation for that busy, bustling time we have our list of reminders of things you can do to avoid the crowds and delays.

Get in early for those repeat scripts. When requesting repeat prescriptions please give us 24 hours notice, this allows the GPs to check the requested medication is safe and appropriate for you. We also encourage e-mail requests should you have access, our e-mail address for prescriptions is nurse@westcoasthealth.co.nz. There is also the option to leave telephone requests for repeat scripts on the nurse’s answerphone which is cleared at least every two hours during the day.

A reminder to use our after hours telephone triage service when you have a medical question or problem on the weekend or weekday evenings.

Our clinic number - 8250114 will connect you to a real person - a registered nurse specially trained to give you medical advice. There is no cost for this service and with luck you may save yourself a trip to Anglesea Clinic in Hamilton.

December brings with it rotation time for Registrars so we are sadly bidding farewell to Dr Vicki Jones who has proven to be a total asset to our team. Vicki leaves us on Friday 7th December, which then sees us welcoming in our new Registrar Dr Jennifer Hughes on Monday 10th December.

Dr Hughes is looking forward to her time here with us in Raglan.

Surfside update Santa one of few still to come to Saturday, 1st December is party for community Christmas do This the ‘Food Drive’ for the Raglan Local foodie Colin Chung will be way too busy carving spit-roasts come Christmas Day to even consider doubling up as the grand old man in red.

“I’ll be busy carving on the line,” he told the Chronicle of the festive fare planned for this year’s community feast at Raglan Town Hall. It’s become an annual event at which he and a multitude of helpers bring a spirit of goodwill and cheer to about 200 locals who might otherwise spend Christmas Day alone.

And it’s completely voluntary.

So yes, there’s still a vacancy for a Santa, says Colin, although at this stage the Christmas lamb and ham – and the Christmas tree which usually comes from a Te Mata farmer’s paddock – look already assured thanks to community generosity.

Fellow organiser Sue Oliver, who’s happy to leave the cooking and carving to Colin while she co-ordinates the team of volunteers and the donations now flooding in, confirms “we are looking for someone to put themselves forward” as Santa.

Not that she’s worried. Judging by the response from the past two years of the free community-run event “we eventually get a Santa”, she says.

Both organisers say Raglan residents look to be rallying to make this year’s community Christmas dinner even better than before.

Nobody in town, for whatever reason – whether they’re on their own, or simply can’t afford Christmas this year – needs to be miserable, Sue says.

And the invitation for this family Christmas dinner is no different from any other family invitation, she says – albeit in the town hall, with many others to help boost the festive spirit.

But the more the merrier, she insists.

“We want to get the word out there and (as a gesture of goodwill) encourage people to come.”

Sue’s partner, longtime local muso Dave Maybee, will again organise the entertainment including Christmas carols.

And not only Raglan but also Hamilton businesses come up with a range of goods every year, right down to the 30 tablecloths for instance from ‘A Bit of a Do’ which prides itself on providing “exceptional presentation” whatever the occasion.

“People are so generous,” says Sue. “And we only ever ask a little of everyone.”

While some locals cater for the “decadent dessert” table, others can come in to the town hall – given free of charge by Waikato District Council – on Christmas Eve to help decorate. And there’s always a place for good old-fashioned Christmas crafts like paper chains that even the children can make.

“Raglan is full of artistic people,” Sue says. And small gifts – home-made or bought for $10 or so by those who care and have the time – ensure there’s plenty to go around.

Colin also marvels at the generosity of spirit within the community that makes it all happen. Cash donations of $100, $200, even $500 can be relied upon from locals who don’t want to be named – and these pay for extras that may not get donated directly.

“I’m not worried,” says Colin. “It all comes together.”

The Community House van will be out on the day, transporting young and old to and from the event.

It seems there’s just no excuse not to go and be part of the feel-good family Christmas.

And don’t be shy about coming, adds Sue. She asks that people call her on 825 7906 so there’s some idea of numbers being catered for.

We’re here to stay: district nurses drill home message Waikato District Health Board will not be cutting back on its services to Raglan, and has taken “digs” meantime at the area school’s old dental clinic.

That message from Hamilton and Rural Family Health team manager Jan Hart comes in the wake of concerned residents’ fears the town’s district nurses were being unfairly evicted – and the service possibly reduced – from Raglan Community House where they’ve been based for 20-odd years.

But Jan insisted last week there’s “no uproar” and no division between the community and the Community House over the perceived falling out. The Community House committee had “quite rightly” asked – in its quest for more space to extend its own services – the DHB to move out.

However “our services will continue as they always have”, she assured the Chronicle. “Whatever happens, it will not impact negatively on the community. We will still deliver the same service from a different venue.”

But maybe in a different way, she added.

“Health services are changing all the time and (we) look to improve and evaluate.”

Jan also acknowledged the offers of temporary accommodation from Te Kohao Health at the local marae, Raglan Trust Hospital in Manukau Road and West Coast Health Clinic downtown.

She’s particularly grateful however to Raglan Area School principal Malcolm Cox who is applying to the Ministry of Health to

upgrade the school dental clinic for its nurses and social workers, and has meantime offered the space to the district nurses whose work now is primarily in people’s own homes as opposed to treatment rooms.

All that’s currently needed is a base for early-morning and late-afternoon work.

The clinic was really run down, Jan explained, after having not been used for a year or so since mobile dental services took over. And although the DHB can’t afford to put money into the building, it’s been springcleaned, she says, and now looks good.

“I would particularly like to acknowledge the wonderful support the wider community have shown to our district nurses,” Jan added this week. “It has been very much appreciated.”

While recent letters to the Chronicle in defence of “the wonderful district nurses, both at home and in their rooms” suggest they’ve been dealt a raw deal, this is not the case, reiterated Raglan Community House Society Inc chairperson Genny Wilson recently.

In a letter to the editor a few weeks ago, explaining the long community house liaison with the district nurses, she pointed out they have all enjoyed “a close working relationship” and will continue to do so.

And while the need to relocate the nurses was “regrettable”, she added, their December 14 move to independent accommodation was also “cause for celebration” as other, newer services would now also be able to be accessed through freed-up space at the Community House. Edith Symes

Condolences: On a sad note I want to acknowledge the sudden and unexpected death of 8yr old Merenga, daughter of Ani Riki & Simon Kereopa. Merenga loved God and her church and will be sadly missed at Surfside. She was a vibrant and outgoing little girl that we all loved very much. Our love goes out to Ani, Simon and whanau during this time of grief. Merenga was an inspiration to us all.

Christmas Services: Christmas is just around the corner and I want to encourage you to attend a church service this year. Surfside will be having a special Christmas service on the 23rd Dec 10am at the Area School, as well as a Christmas Day service 10am at Te Uku Church.

Wharf identity dies A service was to be held at Marlin Cafe & Grill yesterday (Wednesday) to farewell the restaurant’s owner, Kevin Bowering, who died last Friday at the age of 66.

A local since the mid ‘90s when he turned a guest house opposite the wharf into the Marlin, Kevin built up a “very successful” business over the years, his good mate and Raglan hotelier Jeff Holloway told the Chronicle.

He was highly respected in the community, generous and helped a lot of people out, Jeff said.

Kevin was also “a real gentleman” who would definitely be missed, he added.

In an online tribute this week one couple wrote: “There will be an empty space around the leaner at the bar that is Kevin’s spot.

Will remember him with fond memories.”

Kevin leaves behind his partner Ofa, and brothers Bob and Michael and their families.

meetings WEC held about the Maui Dolphin Threat Management Plan over the last month. DOC and MPI received a record number of submissions on this topic, over 21,000, so thank you to everyone who took time to make your voice heard on behalf of the dolphins.

In order to celebrate the presence of these beautiful dolphins in our local waters, and to raise awareness amongst people that don’t know how near to extinction this species is, Whaingaroa Environment Centre have printed a run of limited edition T-shirts. "What's that white flower on the mountain?"

We've been getting that question a lot this month.

The clusters of flowers are visible from town. It's great to see that the locals are keeping an eye on our Karioi Maunga.

So here's your answer! Olearia rani, or heketara, is a common small forest tree of New Zealand. It's a member of the daisy faimly, sometimes called Tree Daisy. It grows in lowland forest throughout the North Island and in the northern half of the South Island.

Heketara leaves have white undersides and prominent veins. In spring it produces bunches of sweet-smelling flowers. They say when the Heketara tree flowers profusely you are going to have a long hot dry summer.

We have charcoal and teal for the men, sky blue and charcoal for the ladies and grey and royal blue for the kiddies. A full range of sizes are available at the moment, but the popular ones will sell out fast. At just $25 (and $20 for the kids), they’re a bargain. We would love for anyone to come down and join us on a Friday morning from 9-11, learn about gardening, get your hands dirty, let the kids run free outside for a bit and take home some yummy veges for dinner.
