Raglan Police report

Raglan Police are still busy from the hustle and bustle of a small seaside town with a huge influx of visitors.

In the past month we have been receiving 99 reports for service. As many of you would have noticed Raglan station is often not open and accessible to the public. This is for good reasons, we are likely to be attending jobs, conducting prevention tasks by being out and about.

Please use the “door bell” on the side of front door and we will endeavour to return to station to assist with enquiries.

Alternatively report to 105 if nonemergency and 111 if an emergency is happening in real time.

As per usual this time of year, there is an influx of lost and found property.

Please report any lost property to 105 as it may have been handed in to another station other than Raglan.

Again, we’ve also had an influx in dishonesty offending, so this is your timely reminder to lock your vehicles, close windows and lock all your doors. Get security cameras and alarms to deter the burglar.

Be mindful of online fraud. If it sounds too good to be true it most probably is. If unsure check with a relative or friend. Scammers targets everyone but often it’s the vulnerable that becomes victims of fraud, so look out for your family members and friends. Educate and share information.

Remember Police are here to give advice if needed.

Your article 'Regional council proposes resilience and efficiency-focus’ ends by saying, "Councillors also decided to introduce a 20 per cent increase in fares for bus users, designed to help keep general rates down.”

Effectively that’s saying bus passengers should pay 20% more so that rate rises will be less. My calculation is that it’ll avoid a 58c per year rise in my rates. In any case, I’d doubt that the average passenger is

better able to afford an increase than the average ratepayer. The advice Regional council had was that it’d cut bus use by 4% and that half the saving would go back to government (Waka Kotahi).

Council’s Long Term Plan will be coming out for consultation shortly. I hope they might get lots of submissions questioning the wisdom of spending money to cut climate change, whilst at the same time encouraging more people to drive and treating a generally poorer minority unfairly.

Stuff of fairytales as agave shoots up in local’s garden

Good keen fisherman Graham Hubert has seen some whoppers in his time but nothing like the agave spike that

The asparagus-type shoot came from nowhere and – not unlike Jack’s fairytale beanstalk – climbed quickly into the sky. Graham reckons it grew by about eight inches or 20cm a day.

The 77 year old’s google search revealed that his unusual ‘tree’ is likely the rare blooming of Agave Americana, commonly known as the century plant – although, contrary to the name, it doesn’t actually bloom every 100 years.

Instead, the plant flowers around 10 to 30 years in its native desert climate of Mexico and Texas.

The blooming process is essential for its reproduction, with the pods containing seeds which eventually fall and spread Agave Americana elsewhere. Once it’s bloomed, however, the parent plant’s long life is over.

Already it appears to be dying, Graham told the Chronicle, which means he will ultimately need to do the Jack and the Beanstalk thing and chop the plant downbut with a chainsaw not the axe of folklore.

He’s anticipating there’ll be “a few trailerloads” to cart away.

Graham and his wife Barbara believe the agave was planted 18 years ago, once they’d moved permanently to what had been their holiday property since the mid-80s. “We paid to have the section landscaped for easy care,” Graham recalls.

They’ve both been delighted at the phenomenon unfolding in their own garden which is probably a combination of the species being the right age – gradually building up energy in its leaves – and the hot summers, causing it to use that energy to finally flower and seed.

Toitū te Tiriti - Waitangi Day Whaingaroa 2024

For event organisers of ‘Toitū Te Tiriti - Waitangi Day Whaingaroa 2024’, it was important that the community had an opportunity to come together and mark the day in a meaningful and inclusive way.

They wanted to create a space for the wider community to learn, korero, and acknowledge and affirm the foundations and relationships that Te Tiriti o Waitangi established in Aotearoa. Being supported to explore how we can continue to uphold our collective commitment to those foundations was also an aim for the day.

‘We set up the hall in such a way that people were really able to take their time to engage with and absorb the information that we provided. People were really taken on a journey,’ said event co-organiser Michelle Levy.

Between 300 and 400 came through the Town Hall doors, some of whom had travelled from Hamilton specifically to attend this event. A historical timeline of key events lined the walls of the hall, including both Crown breaches and Māori resistance, from before the signing of Te Tiriti in 1840 to our present day. This included the establishment of ‘Te Wakaminenga o Nga Hapu o Nu Tireni’ - the General Assembly of The Tribal Nations in 1808; the creation of the ‘Te Wakaminenga’ flag in 1834; the signing of ‘He Whakaputanga o te Rangatira o Nu Trieni’ – The Declaration of Independence in 1835, and the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi on February 6th 1840.

“Amazing, informative and positive event. Well attended and supported. Congratulations to the team. Mauri ora,” said Raglan Community House manager Mike Rarere.

There were explanations of the tino rangatiratanga flag and quotes from the Hui a Motu which occurred on the 20th January at Turangawaewae. Thanks to the generosity of PureLink who sponsored our wifi, we had live streaming from the kōrero happening at Waitangi in the supper room. Proving to be very popular, at times the supper room was full of people watching the livestream and enjoying a cuppa and delicious home baking.

‘We appreciate the opportunity to support the Waitangi Day event for Raglan and to contribute to making it happen,’ said David Woollet from PureLink.

People also had the opportunity to contribute to our Kotahitanga Korowai –Unity Cloak installation, signing their names to affirm the importance of upholding our founding constitutional document Te Tiriti, and adding their own personalised colourful messages showing the actions they can take in their own lives to uphold Te Tiriti.

Raglan Community Radio interviewed people attending the event throughout the day, and local film and documentary maker Maryann Tuao was also hard at work with ‘Toitū Te Tiriti - Waitangi Day Whaingaroa 2024’ the subject of a short film to be released later this year.

‘Such a fantastic event pulled together so quickly. Informative, friendly, a superlative example of Mana Whenua & Tangata Tiriti working collaboratively and selflessly for our little community and achieving great things. Ka Rawe!” Said Suz Carter.

The organisers were keen to acknowledge all those who had helped make the day possible: “to all our supporters ngā mihi nuiRaglan Naturally, PureLink, Waikato District Council, Whaingaroa Environment Centre, Raglan Community Radio, Raglan Signs, Maki Nishiyama from Raglan Chronicle, our wonderful hosts in the kitchen, those who contributed their delicious home baking, and all those others who gave their time and energy to the kaupapa. Lastly, to the community for turning out in force to really embody our message of the dayKotahitanga, Unity and Aroha.”

Event co-organiser Lisa, says this whakatauki sums up our day; “He iti te mokoroa, nāna i kati te kahikatea. The mokoroa, the grub, may be small, but it cuts through the Kahikatea. This means that small things can have a great impact and it encourages us to think big, because even with small numbers or resources it is possible to achieve great things.”

Due to the success of the day and the many requests for other opportunities to continue to learn, the Toitū Te Tiriti Exhibition will be open from March 12th - March 29th 10am2pm at the Raglan Old Arts Centre.

Anyone wanting to be kept updated with ongoing events can email tetirititoitu@ gmail.com to be added to the mailing list or follow the Facebook page Toitū Te Tiriti Whaingaroa Raglan.

Māui Dolphin Day is back! Māui Dolphin Day is a collaborative community festival which highlights the endangered Popoto/Māui Dolphin, the importance of our marine environment and our community's creative spirit

The first Māui Dolphin Day was in 2004 - that’s 20 years ago!

S u m m e r G a r d e n i n g i t ’ s n o t t o o l a t e !

Throughout the event, there will be live entertainment on stage, activities and performances around the site, food stalls fundraising for community groups, information from different nationwide organisations, ending with the impressive, hilarious, “fall-aparty” Recycled Raft Race Māui dolphins are the smallest out of the 30 identified dolphin species in the world's oceans Raglan is known for its close connection to this dolphin, we’re right in the middle of their limited range - the Whāingaroa catchment flows into the west coast waters which are home to the Māui Dolphin In the 1970s, it’s estimated there were around 1,600 Māui dolphins, now there is an estimated population of only 48-64 left Māui dolphins are endemic to Aotearoa, and they should be treated no differently to the more effectively protected endemic species such as the iconic Kiwi Most of the Māui Dolphins threats are human induced and its survival depends on how our coastal communities change our behaviour to reduce these threats and bring back our iconic dolphin The focus of Māui Dolphin Day is to share the current situation for the dolphin, what’s next in terms of its recovery plan and what coastal communities like ours can do to save and protect them and more widely our marine environment

A chat with the owners of the Stoned Cow Café

Jacqui from the Chronicle chats to Sam and Shaun, owners of The Stoned Cow in Raglan

How did the idea come about to open the Stoned Cow in Raglan?

During lockdown we had this crazy idea to open a ‘dopamine kick’ community hub that provided great coffee, home cooking, art everywhere, dogs inside, an awesome location and vibey events - pretty much all of our favourite things! We started in Auckland 3 years ago but relocated to Raglan as we felt it fitted our brand and our lifestyle much better.

What is the story behind the name?

I love painting cows (Sam) and this particular painting depicted a rather stoned looking one on a beach. It was one of my best selling prints and with our sense of humour we thought it would be a cool name and very unique!

What sets you apart from other eateries and what is the connection to mental health causes?

We allow dogs inside as long as they are on a lead and the owners are well behaved. We love dogs and recognise that owners are happy when they can bring their best friend in with them. As the artist I have also been championing the benefits of creativity on mental health. We have done this through charity events with the Gumboot Friday appeal, kids classes and through adult sip and paint evenings. When I am painting in the cafe it is great to engage with people who just need that gentle nudge to start expressing themselves without fear of messing it up - it’s art! There are no mistakes, only a creative process and an outcome that will always resonate with somebody!

I hear you have a gluten free following. Tell us about this and what you offer.

We are both gluten free and get frustrated with limited options when we eat out. As bakers we wanted to bring delicious options to those with food intolerances - our scones are very popular and our lemon meringue and banoffee slices are our best sweet sellers! We have also ensured that we have great GF

options on the kitchen menu as well as keto dishes.

I hear being dog friendly is also a drawcard.

It certainly has been since Covid. Our dogs got used to having company and many owners do not want to leave them behind. I think we are also a little bit behind other countries when it comes to accepting dogs inside eateries. Great care is always taken in terms of making sure dogs are never anywhere near the food prep areas and very much by their owner’s side.

Can you tell us about this relaxed aspect of the business and why it works?

We are chilled people who love comfort. I get a kick out of watching customers putting their feet up and reading a book on our couches. This is our home (we spend more time here than at our house) so it’s important that it feels welcoming for our own kids as well as our community. We want you to feel as if you are round your bestie’s house having a catch up and a cuppa.

We are really pleased to offer an enclosed courtyard out the back with a play area for kids (and big kids). It’s become a popular space and we look forward to continuing to fill it with more toys and murals.

What exciting things are happening in 2024?

Art events will kick off in March and we will continue to build on our garden in the back courtyard. We have some more internal and external murals planned to bring even more colour to our space. We will be doing more work to promote our high tea and catering options and there will be a lot more ‘live painting’ sessions in the cafe during the day.

We will also continue embracing community by supporting local suppliers. We use Dreamview Milk, Artisan Bread, local avocados and eggs as well as The Raglan Food Company. It’s important that we embrace Raglan’s values, which is why we also have a cup library and offer a discount to anyone that brings their own keep cup.

We are also launching a loyalty card for locals in March.

What are your opening hours?

From 8am til 3pm every day although we can extend hours for large groups.

How do people contact you? Social?

Backyard Trapping: A Crucial Step in Raglan's Predator-Free Movement

You've likely heard whispers –or shouts – about the Raglan community's journey towards restoring native biodiversity.

You may even have already noticed more birdlife in your garden or neighbouring reserves, or been in Whāingaroa long enough to have noticed how lush the bush coverage is becoming on Karioi.

We are privileged to live amidst breathtaking natural beauty, surrounded by regenerating forests and pristine coastlines. Yet, as you know, our paradise is under threat from invasive predators that can easily decimate native wildlife populations and disrupt fragile ecosystems. While we've already made strides in combating these threats, there's still much to be done, and we need your help.

You see, trapping at home isn't just about protecting our gardens or ensuring our native birds can flourish. It's about safeguarding

the very essence of Whāingaroa– its unique biodiversity, its spirit of community, and its legacy for generations to come. Every trap set, every pest caught, brings us closer to realizing our shared vision of a predatorfree Aotearoa.

But we can't do it alone. We need everyone to join us. Whether you're a seasoned trapper or just dipping your toes into the world of conservation, there's a place for you on this journey!

If you’ve forgotten you had traps (we understand!) - then recommit yourself to the cause: Set your traps - or get some from us to get you started - and encourage your friends and family to do the same. If you love the idea of conservation in your backyard, but can’t imagine yourself setting a trap, for a small cost, we can do it for you.

The Karioi Project’s Backyard Hub is here to support you, so get in touch today!

Waikato residents urged to check electric blankets before winter

Faulty electric blankets can cause fires.

Urban and rural residents in the Waikato are being urged to get their electric blankets checked before the cold weather sets in.

Local lines company WEL Networks, in partnership with Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Alpha Electrical, are hosting a free electric blanket testing event in Raglan on Saturday, March 9.

The inaugural testing event will be held at the Raglan Fire Station from 10am – 1pm.

WEL Networks Fault Support Technician Tim Schollum says this is a great way to give back to the community and to give them peace of mind that their electric blankets are safe.

“Just bring your electric blanket, and we’ll check to see if it’s faulty, or if you can put it straight on your bed," FENZ Senior Advisor Community Readiness and Recovery, Kevin Holmes says.

In 2023, the same events were held at the Hamilton Fire Station with 79 electric blankets tested, and six were removed due to the fire risk. At the Te Kauwhata Fire Station 58 electric blankets were tested and four were removed due to the fire risk.

“We potentially saved a total of 10 house fires from happening – just by people being proactive and getting their blankets tested,” he says.

Kevin Holmes says there are steps you can take to make sure you’re storing your electric blanket safely.

"Store your electric blankets flat, or loosely rolled up to prevent damaging the wiring.

"It’s also important to never sleep with your electric blanket turned on at night as it could cause a fire. Always switch it off before you go to bed," he says.

“Our team enjoy working alongside WEL Networks and FENZ to offer this service,” Alpha Electrical Operations Manager Mitch Bearman says.

With the weather starting to cool down in the evenings, it’s a great time to check your electric blankets.

Film screening: Deep Rising

Join us on an epic journey from the deepest depths of our ocean – the most uncharted and inaccessible place on our planet – to the future of green energy, and learn how the two are inextricably linked.

Narrated and executive produced by Jason Momoa, and interwoven with awe-inspiring footage of the deep’s most dazzling creatures, Deep Rising illuminates the vital relationship between our ocean’s fragile and mysterious ecosystems, and sustaining all life on Earth.

A riveting tale of geopolitical, corporate and scientific intrigue, the film exposes the inner workings of the International Seabed Authority (ISA): a secretive United Nation instrument which oversees nearly

half our planet’s surface on the ocean floor. The ISA is empowered to greenlight the massive extraction of metals from the seabed which are deemed essential by some to fulfill demand for the current electric battery technology.

As extractive conglomerates pivot investments from oil and gas to deep-ocean mining, Deep Rising asks why we don’t instead choose to develop abundant resources to solve our growing energy demands.

Deep Rising reminds us that the seabed is the common heritage of humankind and highlights the urgent need to make the right decision for generations to come.

Old School Arts Centre theatre, free screening,

29 February (Thurs) NZT 7pm, followed by Q&A with Phil McCabe (Pacific Regional Lead - Deep Sea Mining, Deep Sea Conservation Coalition)

There will be refreshments and a raffle by koha.

Legal advice with DTI Lawyers: owning your own home

Owning your own home is an exciting step to make, but the process of getting there can be stressful and potentially risky if you are not well-informed and do not understand what is required of you. Similarly, selling your home requires an understanding of the steps you will need to avoid any possible legal complications.

The following is a simple guide of what you can do to avoid stress, minimise cost and prevent costly legal complications.

Your lawyer will play a large part in the process and will advise you throughout all stages. Their knowledge and experience in this area is abundant, and they know how to pre-empt problems, assist with the due diligence and help coordinate any finance required. Regardless of the type of property you are looking to buy or sell, your lawyers job is to protect you against risk, and assist you in making informed decisions while minimising stress. Your lawyer needs to be one of the first professionals you contact to provide initial guidance on the process.

Buying a property - when looking to purchase a property a prudent purchaser should:

• Determine how much you can afford to borrow, set a price range for your property search and talk to your mortgage broker or bank early to help you with this decision.

• If you intend to use your KiwiSaver to assist with your purchase, contact your KiwiSaver provider to ensure that you qualify and confirm the amount available to use.

• Shop around to work out what you can afford to purchase and get a comparison of what is available in your price range.

• Do not sign the sale and purchase agreement before discussing the transaction with your lawyer.

• Investigate insurance for the property.

• Ask your lawyer to review the title and associated documents.

• Obtain and ask your Lawyer to review a Land Information Memorandum (LIM). Make the agreement conditional on your approval of this.

• Have a suitably qualified builder look at the property and provide you with a written report identifying any issues or work that may be required.

• Selling a property

• Discuss and finalise what you want from the sale, including the price you are willing to accept, choice of agent and selling methods.

• It is important that you identify any issues that must be legally disclosed to a potential purchaser. If you are unsure discuss it with your lawyer.

• In some cases you will need to seek advice from your accountant.

• Your lawyer should review the agreement prior to signing to make sure it reflects your intentions and you are adequately protected.

The above are some of the basic steps to set you up for a successful purchase or sale of a residential property. Each property transaction is not the same and in many cases there are additional legal issues that must be considered. This is where good legal advice is essential.

Raglan Business Chamber

Protecting your retail shop with a fog cannon

Whilewe have not seen the levels of ram-raid activity of previous years a recent local burglary reminded us of the risk of theft and subsequent damage.

If you run a small retail business you may be eligible for a $4,000 subsidy to get a fog cannon installed. Fog cannons can fill a shop with dense fog in seconds, stopping criminals from seeing.

These points will help you choose the right fog cannon for your business.

• Fog cannons installed under this scheme must be supplied with a pendant that you can wear in the store. Make sure you receive this from your provider, and that you know how it works.

• Most fog cannons can be installed with a motion detector. These enable the fog cannon to be triggered automatically after hours, in the case of a break-in. Ask your provider if they include this in the installation, and if not, what it would cost. Generally, it is a low additional cost.

• If you already have an alarm system, another option is to integrate the fog cannon with it. This means that if the alarm goes off, the fog cannon will also activate. Ask your provider if they can do this.

• Check whether the fog cannon comes with a siren, as this adds another deterrent when activating the fog cannon manually.

• Ensure the placement of the fog cannon does not interfere with any other security measures, for example, the fog cannon does not impair the view of a CCTV camera.

• Ask your provider what size area the fog cannon is designed for and whether this will adequately cover your store. Larger stores may require more powerful fog cannons.

• Check how quickly after activation the fog cannon can fill your outlet. Release times differ across models. The longer one takes to activate, the higher the risk of harm.

• Ask your provider about how long it takes for the fog to dissipate, which areas it will settle in first, and whether it leaves any traces after use.

• Check how many times the fog cannon can be discharged before requiring a refill or service. This will differ across models. If it only discharges once before requiring a refill make sure you have refills in stock. Make sure that you are aware of every time the fog cannon is used or tested, so you know when it is due for a refill.

• Check with your provider about the cost of refilling your fog cannon.

• Fog cannons require regular servicing to keep them working. Ask your provider what kind of servicing their fog cannon requires and how often, and what service plan they offer. You should also ask what warranty terms they offer (beyond the minimum 1 year requirement).

• Make sure your fog cannon installer provides you and your staff with training on how to activate the fog cannon.

• Check your lease agreement and get your landlord’s permission before proceeding with a fog cannon installation. and preventing further damage or theft.

Go to business.govt.nz site below to check your eligibility in a quick test.

Raglan iHub encourages event organisers to collaborate for promotion to wider audience

The iHub would like to invite major event organisers to work together and notify the community hub of upcoming planned events. Working together collaboratively will help improve knowledge and sharing of information whilst also promoting your local event further to a wider network of visitors.

The initiative aims to bolster community spirit and foster a vibrant cultural scene within Raglan by providing a platform for event organisers to highlight their activities and engage with a wider audience.

Located adjacent to the Museum, the iHub serves as a hub for both locals and tourists seeking information about Raglan and its surroundings. The volunteers are well-informed, the website is comprehensive, and the creative pieces for sale all draw in visitors.

Through the collaboration, event planners may advertise their events on the iHub website, expanding their audience and drawing attention to Raglan's thriving arts and culture scene. Additionally, the iHub provides services that enable visitors to book tickets and plan their itineraries while in the village.

This is a valuable opportunity to increase exposure and connect with the community. It not only helps reach a wider audience but also strengthens the fabric of the community by encouraging participation and cooperation.

The iHub team already uses the great web service provided by Raglan Community Radio, using the current and up to date What’s on in Raglan Calendar and guide to find out about regular events and events happening on the day and throughout the week.

Key event organisers interested in working with iHub are encouraged to reach out to the hub's coordinators to discuss opportunities for promotion and partnership. The partnership between the iHub and event planners represents a team effort to highlight the best that Raglan has to offer and celebrate the richness of community life.

Check out our website www.raglanihub.nz or contact the hub directly. We are located at 13 Wainui Road, phone 07 825 0556 or email info@raglanihub.nz

Galvan Family Reunion

Descendants of Richard and Catherine Galvan who settled in Raglan in 1863 gathered for a family reunion with a dinner on Saturday 17th February at the Harbour View Hotel, and a brunch on Sunday 18th February at the Te Mata Hall.

The reunion drew descendants from as far as Canada, the South Island, Auckland, Northland and the wider Waikato region. Richard Galvan was a well-respected blacksmith in Raglan in the late 1800s, and their children were contributors to the development of Raglan and Te Mata, droving and farming the district for several generations. Galvan Family members enjoyed connecting and sharing stories from the past during the reunion.

Richard and Catherine built the homestead at 17 Cliff Street which still stands, and their great granddaughter Grace Fry, daughter of Eddie Galvan now resides in her home built on the very same land where the Galvan Forge once stood.

Grace Fry is pictured front centre of the group picture at the Te Mata Catholic Church. A Facebook Group named Galvan Family Raglan New Zealand has been set up to allow descendants to connect and stay in touch.

Brand new and still in the box, 64 Ruapuke Road represents a delightful and rare lifestyle opportunity. The 1.21-hectare (2.96 old fashioned acre) section is gently rolling with sweeping rural views, partly comprising 'the sleeping lady' that is Mt Karioi. With a little fencing there is the opportunity to have your own pony and/or grazing animals or alternatively just continue with the landscaping and develop more gardens. The bright and airy 158m2 home consists of a generous open plan living and kitchen space, 3 bedrooms, master with ensuite, plenty of heating and cooling, ample decking and a double internal access garage. The large 112m2 shed, built to accommodate a motorhome, boat and workshop is on track to be completed in

Raglan 15B Primrose Street

Sunny elevated section

This elevated 654m2 section has great views out toward Motokokako Point that juts into the Raglan harbour, as well as views out over the sports ground towards Te Akau south. It represents a rare offering to purchase a bare section in the Raglan township to build your dream home. The section itself has a fair sized, flattish platform at the top which then slopes away to a boundary of well-established manuka and other native flora. Situated well for the sun and sheltered from the prevailing westerly wind, this section is in an ideal location for building a comfortable and

home, plus, with a Geotech report and a full set of working drawings potentially available, you'll have a head start on the design process.
