To the Editor, I am writing in response to a letter that recently featured in the paper which incorrectly advertised the “Temporary Closure of Pipiwharauroa Walk/Cycle Track”.

The letter stated that the trail was Marlin Cafe & Grill. Dine in. On the Wharf...........................................825 0010 currently closed until 20 October, which is incorrect.

We understand and appreciate the concerns expressed in the letter regarding the use of the trail by members of the public during lambing season, The Shack. Dine in or Takeaway. 19 Bow Street..................................825 0027 however although it is not a formed road, it is still considered a public road and the public have a right to access it at all times.

Council cannot infringe upon the public’s right of access, nor can we The Raglan Club. Dine in or Takeaway. 22-24 Bow Street.................. 825 8278 provide or condone signage for this, however there is nothing to stop the landowner/occupier erecting a sign on the boundary requesting the public be mindful that the road adjoins a farm and the lambing season is underway.

It is also important to remember that the trail is for cyclists and pedestrians only, no dogs or motorbikes are permitted on the trail at any time.

Raglan Area School has all those available courts and Raglan

Rugby Club has netball and tennis courts. Te Mata also has two tennis courts and badminton courts in the Te Mata Hall, and many locals have their own tennis court. Why build a purpose built ‘shed’ for 1 netball court when there are so many courts available elsewhere?

Yes the Domain requires changing facilities and storage for the football club. The only sport not mentioned in the article was squash! The closest squash courts are in Hamilton. Come on Raglan Community Board, in consulting with your community, please suggest a squash court be included in the ‘shed’ project and encourage the community to utilise the existing facilities already available in Raglan.

Their incessant cooing - in MONOTONE - from 6 o’clock in the morning, then starting again in the afternoon, is like some form of torture.

In some cities in the US they are a declared pest, and no wonder. They multiply like rabbits, so the problem grows daily.

More representative look to next board

R

aglan Community Board is about to get two of the three things retiring board member Barry Ashby called for just weeks ago – better representation for Maori and younger folk.

With just six nominations received for the six community board seats, Raglan residents and ratepayers will now be selecting only who they want as their mayor and their ward councillor when they open their Waikato District Council voting papers late next month.

But there’ll be quite a different make-up to their community board all the same, with Boyd Dixon of Ngati Mahunga-Hourua affiliation and 33-year-old electrician cum DJ Jon Taylor both new faces around the trestle tables of the town hall supper room.

While 55-year-old Boyd is promising to respond to community needs “in an environmentally, socially and culturally aware way”, Jon may not at first seem quite the “youth” representative Barry envisaged. But anyone still well shy of 40 is a youngster in local government terms, and Jon is promising to bring “a new, dynamic look to the board, in touch with today’s issues”.

The Raglan resident of six years also revealed he’ll be starting a Facebook page to encourage locals to identify issues that need addressing, and “will work with my peers to get the best results I can”.

Jon says he’s put his hand up “because I care about this beautiful place and community”, while Boyd describes himself as a passionate advocate of human rights.

Coincidentally music features in both newcomers’ lives. While he’s busy these days developing native tree nurseries, Boyd is also a drummer and a former member of the iconic Raglan band Cornerstone Roots.

And Jon, as DJ Jet, does a live show on Tractor FM on Thursday nights.

Returning to the community board after a lengthy absence will be surfboard shop

owner turned commercial fisherman Matt Holl. Matt brings a wealth of experience in advocating for Raglan’s interests: he was a colourful ward councillor for six years and, while he did not stand for a third term, served those three years instead on the community board.

Dissatisfied with the treatment of the community-driven ‘Raglan Naturally’ plan, Matt had another tilt three years ago at his old ward councillor seat but this time around he was content to nominate for the community board.

Completing the new community board line-up are serving members Bob MacLeod, Linda Cole and Alan Vink who was deputy last term to retiring board chairman Rodger Gallagher.

However Alan will also be going up against incumbent Clint Baddeley in a twoway tussle for the Raglan ward seat which a hard-working Clint has held for nine years now. And in the event Alan was to win, his community board seat would be ”vacated” and – according to electoral officer Maria Edgar – a by-election would be required to bring the board back up to full strength.

Alan revealed to the Chronicle this week his campaign slogan of “A Fresh Perspective”, which he said meant it was time for a new pair of eyes to have a look at old problems and current issues for both Raglan and the Waikato District Council.

He also set out four goals: • To establish a youth council for Raglan, made up of 18-25 year olds who could have meaningful input into local issues • To substantially improve community consultation, dialogue and information-sharing • To ensure that spending is warranted and provides value for money • To do all he could to improve the trust ordinary New Zealanders have in politicians.

Clint meanwhile says his focus is to continue the strong representation he has provided for Raglan for the last nine years.

“Raglan is part of a growing district and the relationship between the council and the community is essential,” he says.

“It is time for stability and someone with credibility [that has been] gained by hard work on behalf of the people of Raglan.” Edith Symes

Mayoralty tussle a headache for voters

W

ith five candidates vying for the Waikato District Council mayoralty, and none of them living within a bull’s roar of Raglan, locals face a difficult task in casting an informed vote for mayor.

Current mayor Allan Sanson has taken more interest in Raglan affairs in recent times, and roading committee chair Noel Smith is credited with helping Clint Baddeley push through the smooth-sealing of Bow Street in time for the ChristmasNew Year crowds, but Frank McInally, Bruce Cameron and Blair Donaldson will be largely unknowns to Raglan voters.

Bruce, a Glen Murray farmer, at least took the time out to make himself known at last week’s Raglan Community Board meeting, but if you care for grassroots democracy you might consider Frank McInally who’s long campaigned on giving community boards more teeth.

As for Waikato Regional Council elections, at least one candidate has a high local profile. Raglan identity Dave Currie’s standing for the Waikato constituency on a “One Waikato” ticket, and has the time to devote to the job now that he’s retired as New Zealand’s Olympics and Commonwealth Games chef de mission and no longer has a role with New Zealand Cricket.

A

17-year-old Raglan resident was airlifted to Waikato Hospital on Monday afternoon after slipping from an Xtreme Waste truck’s front footplate as he tried to jump back on the slowly moving vehicle.

Hakopa Eyre’s vest got caught up in the front left-hand tyre of the truck, say Raglan police, pinning him down until the driver reversed and released him.

Nearby St John ambulance staff were quickly on the scene of the accident at the Wainui Road-Bankart Street roundabout.

The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance

flew him to the emergency department of Waikato Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries before being released later in the day.

Police said there would be an investigation of the accident by both the Serious Crash Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit.

‘Great’ Gala stint, says home-grown Tubze

O

ver the last 12 months there have been a few changes at Raglan Community Radio, not least of which was the appointment of a Station Manager last September, but now we’re also pleased to announce the arrival of our new logo.

We asked local designer Tim Greaney from Grean Design to help us out and then gave him the difficult brief of trying to represent all of our community and the station within a single image. We’re totally stoked with the end result after he took the headphones motif from our old logo and developed it into something that encompasses the whole of Whaingaroa.

As well as the new logo being visible in and around the studio at the Town Hall we also have new

bumper stickers and because we’re so pleased with them we’re giving the first batch away for free!

On top of all this Raglan Community Radio is changing its phone number too. The station changed frequency to 98.1FM a few years ago and we thought that while we’re launching the new logo we should also put the frequency back into the number – so from today the phone number in the studio will be 825 2981.

Added to this you can now text our DJs while they’re on the air as well - messages and requests can be sent to 027 825 2981. And no, that’s not a typo; we got matching numbers to make everything just a little bit easier.

Contact Energy cans Te Akau wind power station Contact Energy has confirmed that it’s focussing on geothermal, not wind power, as its preferred generation technology.

During the announcement of its annual result Chief Executive Dennis Barnes said, “The completion of the Te Mihi geothermal power station will provide Contact Energy with additional lower cost generation.”

The company announcement was: Following a thorough review of the economic, market and regulatory conditions, Contact has reprioritised its wind power development portfolio. Contact has decided to exit the Hauāuru mā raki wind generation development on the Waikato coast and will not proceed in the foreseeable future with the Waitahora wind generation development project near Dannevirke in the Tararua district.

“The development of large projects, such as power stations, is a lengthy and capital intensive process. While it is disappointing that we have not been able to develop these resources, the current supply and demand outlook and the competitiveness of the Tauhara geothermal development means it would be imprudent to continue to hold the full value of these assets,” said Mr Barnes.’

Great Scot: ‘Tubze’ Turner shows off some of the spoils of his two-year stint with Scottish rugby club Gala.

O

ne of Raglan’s most accomplished homegrown rugby players has returned home proud both of the wins and losses he now has under his belt from a stint with a leading Scottish club.

Bryce Turner – the 28-yearold son of local rugby stalwart and longtime referee Frank Turner – had two “great” years with the Gala club and helped them pick up two prestigious Scottish trophies, one of them twice in a row.

But in the process Bryce, long nicknamed “Tubze”, also lost a full eight kilos.

He reckons it must’ve been the cold and the level of rugby he was playing. “It made me push myself a bit further,” he said last Friday when the Chronicle caught up with him at his father’s car spraypainting factory on Wainui Road.

And he admitted lightheartedly that the losses under his belt probably also had something to do with the fact he felt he had to make an impression “because New Zealand’s got such a reputation … about being good at rugby.”

Bryce grew up in Raglan and like older brother Reece was coached by his father Frank in the early years. He said in hindsight it was a good time to go over to the Gala club as it had just come up from a lower division and finished third in the premier one division, qualifying for the British and Irish Cup. The club’s based in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders area renowned for its rugby, he explained. “It’s also five minutes down the road from Melrose which is where the Sevens were invented.”

Highlights of Bryce’s time playing at centre with the Gala

RFC included winning in 2012 the Scottish Cup – the world’s oldest national trophy – which was played on the prestigious international stadium, Murrayfield.

Gala also won the Border League Trophy both years Bryce played.

And they won their own Sevens this year for the first time since 1995.

Bryce has returned keen now to play for one of the premier clubs in the Waikato and perhaps catch the eye of the Waikato NPC squad selectors. “That’s the plan until the work comes up.”

A builder, he fitted solar panels when living in Scotland while his girlfriend worked in sales and marketing for an exotic meats company. Everything from buffalo, elk and reindeer to kangaroo, squirrel and ostrich was sold to restaurants.

“We had springbok steaks quite often,” said Bryce, while his father developed a taste for elk on a visit last October to watch his son play.

It was through the Raglan Rugby Sports Club and Frank’s connection there with coach and former All Black Aaron Pene – who lived in town a few years back – that Bryce first got in touch with Gala RFC and their coach George Graham.

He’s returned with medals, memories and a signed and framed shirt from a club that boasts a place in the Scottish Premiership and Border League – the oldest established rugby union in the world.

Bryce has an impressive history in representative rugby, having variously played for the Hamilton Goldfields under 45kg team, the Harlequins under 17 side, the Waikato under 19s, the under 20s and the Waikato emerging players squad.

Along the way he also played for two years in the much-vaunted Hamilton Boys High School first fifteen.

Directing latest break for strike-it-lucky OIly

H

e’s officially the writer-researcher of TV2’s latest home-grown show ‘Totes Maori’, but Whale Bay local Olly Coddington is lucky enough now to also get a shot at directing – and he’s “stoked”.

“Directing … that’s a step up,” the personable 29-year-old reckoned over a coffee downtown at Raglan Roast, a popular hangout which coincidentally shares the same courtyard as the adjacent Yot Club owned and run by his father Pete.

Olly was home for the weekend, catching up with friends and family after a five-day week at Auckland’s TVNZ studios where he’s working on ‘Totes Maori’ for the rest of the year.

He says he’s grateful his TV2 boss Toi Iti trusts him to not only write the weekly scripts for presenters Alex and Niwa, but also direct them and the field stories that make up the new youth series which kicked off early in July.

Apart from loving the challenge of directing, it “looks good on my CV”, he adds.

It’s been a decade now since the short film which set him on his chosen career path.

Olly had finished school by 2003 and was cruising and surfing in Raglan, he explains, while working at Volcom Lane’s surf shop. “But secretly I wanted to work in TV.” He struck it lucky that year when local actor Antonio Te Maioha – who played a supporting role as the gladiator Barca in the international television drama ‘Spartacus’ – advertised in the Chronicle for actors.

A young Olly ended up hosting the short film – a video entitled ‘Making Mistakes’, which taught marae protocol as part of the Enviroschools curriculum.

“I really enjoyed it,” says Olly, who as the water boy for Raglan’s senior rugby team had looked up to players like Antonio. “Antonio was really cool and encouraged me to do more (acting).”

Olly then scored the lead role as a pirate in ‘Duffy’s High Sea Adventure’ and spent six months in 2004 touring primary schools. The play was produced for the Books in Homes programme to promote reading.

He was 20 and it was his first paid acting job.

And he even got to revisit Raglan Area School where he’d been educated through to the fifth form, before finishing his last two years at Hamilton Boys High.

Soon after playing Duffy, Olly scored a job as a tape operator at Maori Television in Auckland.

Although it was what he calls the low end of production he got to work with reporters, editors and directors.

“I learnt a lot,” he admits.

But he had a secret desire to be in front of the camera.

Antonio “hooked me up again”, says Olly, getting him on the books of Auckland Actors. That led in 2006 to the job as a presenter on TV2’s ‘Mai Time’, a youth series renowned for its use of te reo – in which Olly is fluent thanks to his local schooling in the bilingual unit – and the positive portrayal of Maori culture.

A bit of my time: Olly Coddington relaxes with a home brew, Raglan Roast, while on a break from television duties in Auckland.

“I couldn’t believe my luck,” says Olly of the job. Everything, career-wise, fell into place for him from there.

‘Mai Time’ led on to ‘I Am TV’, another Maori youth programme with a more interactive approach which Olly also fronted for a couple of years. And both shows gave him just a taste of directing.

But he was missing home and the Yot Club needed a manager so Olly returned recently to Raglan for a few years, commuting to Auckland for freelance television work whenever it came up.

Now he’s landed himself behind the scenes of ‘Totes Maori’ – a show about being “totally” Maori, says Olly who’s part Maori himself, or in a more literal sense about “carrying the Maori youth”

of today.

It’s Olly’s job to come up with story ideas, and film people and events of interest to Maori in the 18 to 39 age group for which the programme’s funded. Interviewing Kiwi recording artist Ladi6 was a very recent example of that, and will screen on this week’s show along with NZ supermodel Ngahuia Williams.

Olly’s happy, he insists, to step behind the scenes for a while now and to upskill in other directions. The aim of the show from here on in, he adds, is to make it a little more “artsy” and to mimic American pop culture less.

And that, says Olly, means more “Aotearoa roots culture”. *‘Totes Maori’ screens on Saturdays at 10am on TV2.

Hypothermia: the “cold blooded killer”

H

ypothermia is a sure way to have a short life if you don’t take reasonable care when tramping during the colder months.

Hypothermia is a silent killer of people who do not understand what is going on, says John Greenwood, Publicity officer for Mountain Safety Waikato.

Everyone tramping or climbing during these colder months should have adequate wet weather gear, be wearing layered thermal or wool clothing, have adequate food and know exactly the conditions that can be expected during the tramp.

Some signs of hypothermia are: unusual behaviour such as grumbling, fumbling, stumbling,

mumbling, and falls. Often the person will act quite irrationally and refuse to believe anything is wrong.

Urgent action is needed to get the hypothermic person out of the cold and wet, into dry clothing and be warmed very gently if they are to survive. Keep the patient calm and rested. Urgent evacuation should be organised as hospital treatment may be essential in severe cases.

Club’s wall reduced to rubble

A working-bee held at Raglan Club recently included the demolition of the Raglan Club wall

H

eralding a rejuvenation of Raglan Club, on Raglan’s main street, the club’s very own version of the Berlin Wall was turned to rubble over the weekend.

And there to help were two young Raglan

lads, potential builders in the making perhaps, under the watchful eye of their mum.

The removal of the wall, built to last, was just one of several tidyup jobs members of the club took

care of in a community working bee.

Trees were pruned, gardens weeded and given a much needed spruce up, timely with spring just around the corner.

R savoured the sweet smell of success when aglan Club’s premier snooker squad

they blitzed the opposition, Te Aroha, to secure their division title in this season’s regional Chick Boden snooker competition.

Long-time snooker enthusiast and team member Andy Thompson said the squad played their hearts out and deserved the win, though it wasn’t without its moments.

“We played all day Sunday at the Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club against Te Aroha who, like us, had earned their place in the final. First we had best of one-frame pairs and reversed pairs and at the end of this we were trailing 3 – 1.”

This really put the pressure on each player to step up to their best of three singles games to win back enough frames and take out the title, a feat they accomplished in style taking out seven frames to the oppositions two.

The team had a strong family bent to it as well, with father and son Andy and Jareth Thompson and brothers Cliff and Kevin Hockenhull the main-stays in the squad, supported by fellow snooker maestros Michael Larkin and Henare Brown who stepped in and played when needed.

“Te Aroha were gutted to lose. They’ve won the title twice in the last three years, but we were determined to bring the prize home and we proved we had the skills to do it. I was very proud of Jareth’s performance because he is new to the sport.

We’ll be really looking forward to the competition next year to show we can do it two years in a row,” says Andy.

The Chick Boden event is the premier inter-club competition played between snooker teams from Chartered Clubs throughout the Waikato.

“Now we’ve got the shield we’ll be holding on to it for as long as we can. It was a total team effort and we’re thrilled to have brought it home. Our plan is it will stay here in Raglan for some time to come.”

Councillor’s Column Given the weather lately one would think that we will have a warm spring, all good for the lambing season – good luck to our farming friends.

You may be aware that starting on Friday 21st June an overflow occurred at the Raglan Wastewater Treatment plant, this is an event no body wanted to happen.

A thorough independent investigation is being undertaken by council and by the regional council. Once that is complete we will hopefully know the cause. Please be aware budgets are available to keep the plant operating to its resource consent requirements. Any thing that needs to be done will be done.

You may have watched the water main being thrust along Wainui Road, work is nearing completion and the job has certainly had its moments.

Later in the year the water main in Norrie Ave will be upgraded followed by some kerbing and channelling as well.

Design is completed for a major upgrade to Raglan’s Spring Water Treatment plant.

Concept plans are being developed for the upgrade of the library and service centre. Good news is that an investigation determined that the building met earthquake requirements.

As part of the national digital change over of the television network, central government is promoting a TV TakeBack program. On 1 December this year the Waikato district area will be switched over. The program will subsidize the cost of recycling by $20.00 per TV, up to a certain number of TV’s per district. This system does have a cost for the person recycling the TV, capped at $5.00. The program will be rolled out between October and December, please watch out for more information for when this is happening in Raglan.

Another issue I’ve been involved with is the new requirements brought about by the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012. This Act replaces the Sale of Liquor Act 1989 and is split into three Acts and introduced in stages.

Territorial authorities now have options of adopting a local alcohol policy (LAP).

Council has started that process, a community questionnaire has been done and that information is being evaluated along with other key information that will be shared with community focus groups. A draft policy will be prepared for council and then the special consultative procedure will be undertaken, including a hearing process. This is not expected to be completed until midway through next year.

Over all the Waikato District is going through change and growth, particularly on the Auckland border, where new housing and industrial development is going ahead in leaps and bounds.

A series of Q & A’s with our local artists

This week the Chronicle talks to well known artist Megan Hockly. Image: Tracie Heasman.

Brief description of your practice?

I paint, draw, write and read. Hang washing, tidy and re arrange my house. Make beds, make meals and clean. All part of my ‘Art Practise’.

What are you working on at the moment?

Paintings about watching your thoughts. Also featuring pathways through forests, cuddly lambs, and butterfly hats. That’s me at the moment, and I’m still trying to figure out what half of it means.

Are you from an artistic family? When did you decide to pursue a creative career?

Not in the commercial sense but my mum was an avid photographer. I was living in Australia at the time, my daughter Lia had turned one and I remember thinking ‘Man it would be cool to study art’. I came home, enrolled in the Media Arts course at Wintec and majored in painting.

Who are you influenced by?

People who find their Bliss.

The best piece of advice you ever got?

If you have young children, spend the time they are asleep working on your creativity, NOT doing the dishes!

Best and worst thing about being an artist?

I find it difficult being creative if there is stress in my life, be it physical, emotional or mental. The best thing about being creative is working out my life or creating dreams and hopes.

If you weren’t an artist you’d probably be .....?

A fashion designer, I love clothes and design.

What possession would you like to save in a fire?

Our family photo albums, especially the one’s my mum made.

If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself?

A cook! I don’t enjoy it and would love someone in the kitchen during the day, to keep me company, making cakes and soups, and filling the house with delicious smells (yes I am pregnant…).

What four people dead or alive would you have to a dinner party?

My father, my mum, my grandfather and me. I would love to see them all again.

Your ideal era?

Victorian, for the clothes but really our time is the best, I think, for women and families.

Your best traveling experience?

Travelling on the Orient Express in Thailand with my daughter Lia. I won the trip through the Life and Leisure Magazine, it was truly 5 Star.

Are you a dog or a cat person?

I have become more of dog person since getting Tommie our puppy. He definitely has small dog syndrome but makes me laugh too.

Do you have recurring dreams? if so what about?

I tend to go back to certain scenes that are familiar but slightly different, it’s spooky.

Where can we see your work?

Skoot here in Raglan are selling posters of my paintings. Soul Gallery in Hamilton also stock prints and The Sugar Bowl cafe in Hamilton has some of my work. I post any updates, new work or sales on my Facebook Artist page and try and have at least one exhibition a year.

Community patrol volunteers sought M

y chance to do a ‘night-owl’ beat last week was too good an opportunity to turn down. I was happy to sacrifice sleep to get a firsthand glimpse of Raglan in the weesmalls and to talk with a couple of men who have been doing their tour of duty for a few years now, looking after the town and looking out for mischief.

Now called Community Patrols the night-owls have been quietly present in Raglan since 1997. Before this, a security service looked out for things at night.

The organisation is part of a nation-wide network of voluntary patrols and while the majority of Raglan’s patrollers are getting on in years, patrols in larger urban areas seem to be attracting a younger cohort, something the group hopes to see replicated here in the future.

For the most part, the shifts are at night, usually lasting two hours or so and at a time agreed by the patrollers. Deliberately, the timing and the route travelled varies.

This time we went out from 11 am to 1 pm and travelled around most parts of Raglan

and beyond including Manu Bay and Te Hutewai Road.

The evening proved uneventful – a success! More stray cats than stray people but I was surprised at just how many vehicles were parked around our main streets that night; some there perhaps because owners chose to not mix drinking with driving. One or two vehicles invoked some interest from the owls. Licence plate numbers were recorded on the nightly activity form, left for police to read following day.

One comment from our driver concerned the absence of graffiti out at Manu Bay. I wondered whether it was somehow connected with surfees taking care of their own patch. We visited behind shops in the centre of town, checking out that all was well, the strong torch-light proving an effective way to see in between buildings and down alleyways from the vantage of the vehicle. The wharf seemed too dark especially near the water’s edge.

Patrol numbers in Raglan have steadily dwindled over the years. Natural attrition due to age and changing circumstances is calling now for some fresh blood. Patrols always go out in pairs and if there is

The harbour is very rough too.

Conditions had previously been good with easterly winds, and the sea colour outside the harbour tidal flows that amazing deep, clear blue-purple. The snapper were out wide beyond the 45m mark and are a good size and in good condition. I would suggest going north of the Raglan entrance, having a jig for kingis on 21 or 23, then do your bottom fish. 45m to 60m. South of Black Rock is the place. Inside that 45m you will be plagued with spiny dogs, there are hundreds of them. You just go through so much terminal tackle with these fish.

Long lining in close is productive, with good gurnard and mega snapper, but your immersion time is limited, like one hour or the sharks will tangle the line. So back

yourself and fish out wide. Large kahawai are still around; these are even better smoked in this winter period. Flounder, yellow bellies, absolutely abound in the harbour and plenty are being caught. The recent calm nights saw people out chasing them with lights and spears. Great! It wasn’t me this time, as I was out of town.

No reports of whitebait running pre-season as yet.

It may be cold, but fishing is great off Raglan. Kawhia boys have boats running to the trench and have been doing well on the pukas and even the odd trumpeter.

The South West Reef beyond Gannet is fishing well for their charter boat boys.

The Raglan Bar is on the leads, Manu Bay has that sand bar off the break water which needs to be watched if there’s a swell.

Fresh bait and a sharp hook means a tight line and a feed – play it safe.

It's only a matter of time before someone is tragically hurt. Also we have noticed an increase in drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts. We would rather educate people to wear seatbelts, but if tickets are required to be issued to get the message across - then so be it.

something untoward observed the crew will stay near but not intervene, updating police if the situation changes or escalates.

In the last six months, patrollers have amassed 261 voluntary hours on duty covering 2733 kilometres. This averages out to just less than 50 hours and 450 km each month.

It’s a win-win situation. For those who put up their hand to get involved a quiet night is reward enough and evidence the service and their contribution to it is a success, while for the police, the information patrols provide gives them a heads-up when it comes to deployment of their limited human resources.

There is a process to become a community patroller but it is not arduous.

Men and women are welcome. The current muster has a mix of both. It gives people a chance to give back to the town they care about without disrupting their routines during the day.

Preview: The ever-popular Raglan Film Festival returns to the Old School Arts Centre in September.

Here, we take a look at one of the festival’s confirmed screenings - Red, White, Black and Blue - a documentary that has won international acclaim and was partly shot in Raglan. The Waikato sequence features a game played at Raglan between a visiting boys rugby team from Los Angeles and the Melville High School rugby team.

When it comes to rugby, New Zealand is the undisputed champion of the world.

But did you know – the game was once an Olympic sport and when it was last contested at the Games in 1924 it was the USA who walked away with the gold medal?

As rugby becomes an increasingly popular sport in the US, New Zealand is a dream destination for a group of rugbyplaying Los Angeles students. Led by former international rugby player Stuart Krohn, Red White Black and Blue follows the students as they travel from the inner city to the green playing fields of New Zealand.

Amidst the rough and tumble of the game, qualities are tested and characters formed. We meet Cameron, a six-footfour superstar in the making, already coveted by American football scouts but with a natural talent for rugby. And Ebony - an academic high-achiever nervously awaiting responses from Ivy League colleges.

Winner of the Best Documentary at the Idyllwild CinemaFest and the Rising Star Award at the Canada International Film Festival, Red, White, Black and Blue will be well worth a watch when it screens in Raglan in September.

Passion for gardens brings group together Raglan ‘lovers of things growing’ have been meeting to share their

for 111 years, an impressive distinction few other community organisations in this town can lay claim to.

Raglan Horticultural Society President Barbara O’Doherty says the group is a happy vibrant bunch of gardening enthusiasts who make for plenty of colourful stories and discussions, especially when it comes to a special feature of regular monthly meetings, ‘the display and interest table.’

The group meets on the third Tuesday each month at the Union Church Hall.

There’s always something unusual or interesting brought into the meeting by members.

Barbara remembers one amazing collection of old newspapers going back several centuries.

“We’re certainly not only about trees, flowers and vegetables. One day we talked about childhood memories.

It was wonderful to hear what was shared, including one member who remembers back in England during WW 2 playing on her swing as a youngster when a plane crashed next to her home. She even saw the pilots face clearly before he crashed. It’s a

memory that has remained with her all her life.”

Back in 2002, to celebrate 100 years of existence, the society planted six kauri in the bush park at Wainui Reserve, along with a plaque on a large log to mark the moment. The trees are in a stand together and Barbara says they’re all growing well. She has been a member for 16 years and in that time membership numbers have fluctuated.

“We would certainly love to see some new faces. It is a very, very nice group of people and you certainly don’t have to be any sort of expert at all, just have an interest.”

Competitions are held each month along with general business discussed where plans are made for trips away.

The group has been to all sorts of farflung places including Queenstown.

Plans are afoot for a garden ramble around some of Raglan’s finest gardens. A flower show in September or October is also in the diary. Barbara is hoping the town will get involved in the flower show, especially children, including pre-schoolers.

“It will be a chance for the young ones to display sand-saucer arrangements, miniature gardens.

We’ll likely have a vege competition as well. Entry will be a gold coin donation.”

When plans have firmed up for the flower show more information about it will feature in the Chronicle.

Meanwhile, for anyone interested in

meeting new people, all with an interest in gardening in its many forms, a very warm welcome awaits – next meeting is 17th September at the Union Church Hall in Stewart Street from 1 – 3 pm.

Letters: To the Editor, This is the last of 10 wonderful days holiday in my old home town of Raglan.

What a great place to unwind and relax. I love the cleanliness of the streets and parks and I love all the cafes. The people are just as friendly as they were 40 years ago. I walked down to the wharf which is much more modern these days - just one criticism - why so much flax? The planting of native shrubs etc is great but do you realise the views you ruin and what about the rats! Rats love flax and they will be breeding away to their hearts content.

Maybe, you have a “Pied Piper” hidden somewhere! I am now closer to Raglan than I have been for a while so will certainly be back. You have a great place here. Good luck for all the future plans - but no more flax please.

To the Editor, We have a new Raglan Community Board without the need for an election. The majority are members of earlier community boards.

Citizens, you don’t have any say in who is elected chair, but you know these people and the level of dedication and leadership qualities they have displayed over the years. It is important that you work out who you think would serve Raglan best as chair, and communicate your thinking to the members. In my view the appointment should be decided by citizens, and a poll would serve democracy better than having the chair decided by the six-member board, who may not know each other well. The two chairmen in my terms worked tirelessly to deliver the best possible results for our little town and both worked wonderfully well with Clint Baddeley, our tireless, dedicated ward member.

WEEKEND STREET BIN DRIVER Xtreme Waste is looking for a permanent weekend driver to service Raglan’s recycling and litter bins. Hours for both Saturday and Sunday are approx 3-4 hours per day starting at 6 am. During the peak summer months (26 Dec to approx 10 Feb), extra hours will be required.

The successful applicant will need to be reliable, honest, fit and healthy and be able to work unsupervised. A current HT licence is essential.
