Riding the cycle growth wave

TRAIL BLAZING IN THE WAIRARAPA

H

ugely popular global travel publishers Lonely Planet has named the Rimutaka Cycle Trail as one of the world’s hottest new travel experiences for 2015. The 115km trail, begins in Petone in Wellington and runs north alongside the Hutt River, across the Rimutaka Ranges and turns south weaving through Wairarapa’s pretty countryside before meeting the dramatic Pacific coastline. It is a ‘Great Ride’ on Nga Haerenga, the NZ Cycle Trail; with the Wairarapa sections taking in both rural and coastal landscapes. The trail can be experienced with 1-3 days of riding depending on ability and easily tied in with other Wairarapa activities you might choose to experience such as visiting the wine village of Martinborough or shopping in Greytown. For more information on the Rimutaka Cycle Trail and other cycling related activities in the region visit www.wairarapanz.com.

S

tuart Edwards laughs at being described as Wairarapa’s Cycle King. Starting Green Jersey Cycle Tours in 2011, he has ridden the rising cycle tourism wave perfectly. He believes Wairarapa will be the New Zealand Cycle Trail’s biggest link. “The Rimutaka Cycle Trail is one of very few loop tracks, on Wellington’s doorstep, linking to the Martinborough Wine Village. The route is beautiful, varied and not too challenging for most riders,” he explains. “Lonely Planet has just called it ‘one of the world’s hottest travel experiences for 2015’. “Originally I thought we’d just do nice rides in the countryside, but quickly realised we could do more.” From their commercial kitchen in Featherston, his wife Lucia caters “fresh and fabulous” food for their Picnic and Pedal and longer tours. Stuart is in charge of the barbecue for guided 2-3 day tours. Stuart and new business partner Joe Howells have steered a growth path. “Joe and I met through the Trails Wairarapa Trust. Joe negotiated to buy March Hare Cycling (first local bike tour company) before approaching me to combine the businesses. “We saw opportunities, and recognised it’s all about quality bikes and great service. For example, we pick up any wine or olive oil our customers have bought during the day, free. “We invested in high quality new bikes. Customers can choose their level of energy: from sit back in the rickshaw for a guided tour, to full-on mountain biking on the south coast. Longer “away trips” are offered to other cycle trails. The big barn on Martinborough’s outskirts is bursting with bikes. Stuart and Joe are bursting with ideas, and happily acknowledge support from Destination Wairarapa and Positively Wellington Tourism. “Imagine a couple coming in from Australia, picking up bikes and cycling away from the airport around Scorching Bay and on to the Rimutaka Trail the next day. We make it simple for them to experience a very special place,” he smiles. See Advert page 25.

Welcoming wine and music at Micro

L

ate afternoon sun warms guests sipping fine local wines and listening to classic bluesy jazz, while enjoying small plates of tasty winefriendly food. This relaxed scene is Martinborough’s stylish Micro Bar, and one of the guests chose the music. Few bars invite guests to choose from a collection of 200 LPs and play them on a classic turntable. For Micro Bar’s new owners, Greg Woodhams and Jackie Perrins, this is hospitality at its best, with a very personal touch. Describing Micro as “small but perfectly formed”, they recount tales of delighted guests revelling in the musical selections. Greg’s much-loved Dual 505 turntable, powered by a 1970s Sansui amp and four sets of speakers, is the first expression as they “add their own flavour”. Taking over in October 2014 and acknowledging Micro founders David and Wendy “ran a great business”, they say big changes are unnecessary. The small plates menu is evolving gradually. In many ways Micro couldn’t be more different from the grandeur of Wharekauhau Lodge where for the last seven years Greg was sommelier and Jackie food and beverage manager. “Making people welcome, helping them relax over a great wine or beer and a plate of something delicious, in a warm inviting environment ... that’s identical, simply on a different scale. Looking after guests is what hospitality people do,” they say. “We’ll run people home at the end of the night, if needed. Visitors are surprised there’s no taxi service. “Obviously we specialise in Martinborough wines, but can’t stock everything. We mix the list up. ”

Magic from a Microwave

Glass melts at 850-900 degrees,” Deb Wardle explains as she carefully slides my first-ever glass art attempt into the microwave. Yes, microwave. Susan McLeary discovers her artistic streak. Six excited newbies to the craft are sharing Deb’s new glass art workshop, Studio 57 in Martinborough. We’ve donned safety glasses, treated the glass-cutter with respect and played with our chosen pieces of glass to create personal treasures under Deb’s guidance. She has introduced us to translucent, opaque and dichroic glass, their different effects when melted and shared inspirational examples. Deb demonstrates how the grunty microwave (“on special from Briscoes”) will fuse glass layers together inside the individual fire brick microwave kilns. They look like pumice. Twelve year old Sam, from Carterton and attending with his mother Nikki, explains www.wairarapalifestyle.co.nz

that the kilns must be circular because “the electrons need to bounce around freely. “A square kiln wouldn’t work; the electrons would get trapped in the corners,” he says. We nod, impressed. Creativity unleashed, we mix colours, layers and shapes to see what happens. Inspired by a simple curve of white glass, I pair it with cobalt blue to create a pendant. For fun, there’s a tiny beauty spot of paualike glass. The worktable hums as engrossed participants share ideas, check out each other’s progress, ask Deb questions and struggle with tweezers to place small chips of glass exactly so. Then there is the excitement of unveiling a glowingly orange molten piece of our own glass art and waiting for it to cool and reveal the colours. With earrings, rings, pendants and glass bricks on show, we all admire each other’s results and bask in shared artistic

achievement. This was a fun couple of hours. Fascinated by glass since her 20s, Deb Wardle has a Diploma in Art and Creativity. She now offers glass art workshops in her purpose-built studio in Martinborough, for groups of 6-8. See Studio57 GlassArt and Gallery on Facebook.

C

arterton District Businesses Inc. (CDBI) are proud to announce the launch of cartertonnz.com an initiative jointly undertaken by the CDBI and Dan Broughton of Wairarapa Web Design Ltd. Dan is an integral part of the CDBI committee being, effectively, the entire IT department and when he offered to rebuild the web site

they leapt at the opportunity. The new site is fresh, appealing and easy to use and addresses a number of key areas the CDBI had identified as being important to the Carterton business and extended neighbourhood community. Following consultation during the early phase of Carterton Place Making with David Engwicht it was found Carterton was missing a central point of promotion and a link between business and the community, the Information Centre, Events Centre, Council and Destination Wairarapa. Using the new web site you will find a comprehensive business listing highlighting CDBI members, current news stories, a delightfully accessible history of Carterton along with an accommodation listing and details of local attractions such as Stonehenge Aotearoa and Gladstone Vineyard. The interactive events calendar will cover major annual occasions through to tiny happenings with the ability for folk to list their own events subject only to a final

Wairarapa Singers’ 20th Anniversary 2015 is the Wairarapa Singers’ 20th Anniversary and to celebrate their success and increasing popularity with their audience and members, they have planned an exciting musical year. Their first concert on May 16th will be a celebration of Mozart’s works and feature his Requiem Mass followed by a full orchestra, gathering professional musicians and vocal soloists from Wairarapa, Wellington and Palmerston North. This is an ambitious concert which will have extensive appeal to both young and old, and delight all Mozart lovers everywhere. It will be held at Rathkeale College auditorium in Willowpark Drive Masterton at 2pm, followed by refreshments. Tickets are $25 each available from the door or from choir members The choir’s second concert will be the popular Evening at the Proms planned for September and is combining with Upper Hutt Singers and local secondary schools. The Wairarapa Singers Choir is currently directed by Angela Cook and meets weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6.45pm until 9.15pm. It has over 55 members ranging from 12 years old to 80 plus years. Members meet for rehearsals at the Rosewood Chapel in Queen Street Masterton and are happy to welcome new singers of all ages and abilities. approval from the web administrator. Carterton now has its very own Farmer’s Market, set in and around the historic and beautiful Memorial Square. It will be a regular weekly Sunday morning event, rain or shine, from 9 - 1pm. The first market started on the 22nd of February with quite a bang! There were lots of stallholders booked, many shoppers interested and even a team of Clydesdales set to give punters a ride in their carriage. There’s a range of vendors, from olive oil to crepes, plants to upcycled furniture, vegetables to amazing handmade macaroons. And of course some great coffee to drink while you come explore. There will be a mixture of regular and occasional stallholders, which will mean the shopper will have a reliable place to shop plus the added interest of new stalls each time. The plan is to have around a 75% food to non food ratio so check out the website at www.cartertonmarket.co.nz or ‘Like’ us on Facebook for lots of updates.

Love Pukaha

here’s a whole lot of love happening at Pukaha Mount Bruce. Kiwi eggs are hatching in the nursery with one special chick nicknamed Valentine arriving on Saturday 14 February! It has been a bumper year for the breeding pair of whio (blue duck) who have had 16 ducklings hatch and the three pairs of red-crowned kakariki pairs have had 21 chicks between them. The North Island kaka pair have had four chicks and there are lots of rifleman families active around the visitor centre too. North Island kokako are living and breeding in the Pukaha forest as well as good sized populations of North Island kaka and North Island brown kiwi. To support the pest management work at Pukaha which keeps the forest safe for the native birds, Pukaha Mount Bruce will hold a fundraising dinner and auction, Love Pukaha, on Friday 24 April 2015 at the Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park. Tickets are $95 each and include drinks, dinner and entertainment. Tickets are available from Pukaha Mount Bruce 06 3758004 or Helen Tickner on 027 770 0020.

autumn - WINTER events There’s plenty happening over the next few months in the Wairarapa so don’t forget to mark your calendar and participate in these fun-filled events. For more details go to www.wairarapanz.com

The Vintage Aviator Flying Weekends March-April Some of the world’s rarest aircraft will take to the Wairarapa skies this autumn following the launch of The Vintage Aviator flying weekends. The Thrive team (from left) Di, Martine and Lucy love their colourful newly re-designed Martinborough store, and its equally colourful clothes and accessories.

Susan McLeary

Thriving in Martinborough

A Martinborough retail pioneer, Thrive has been clothing stylish women for nearly 20 years now, asking the question ‘Why just survive when you can thrive?’ Susan McLeary finds out how.

F

ounders Josie and Sophie Bidwill are forward-thinkers. Their Thrive philosophy is strong and proud: predominantly New Zealand made products, with ethical manufacturing, product source and sustainable business practices. Their fabrics are mostly organic cotton, merino, natural fibres as well as other fabrics that “feel good on the body and are easier on the environment”. They also embrace change. Earthquake strengthening created the chance to re-configure the store, in the heart of Martinborough village. Opening up the centre of the building created a lovely square gallery, improved the retail space flow and added a heat-lifting grassy green feature wall. Centre stage is a striking contemporary glass chandelier, from local glass artists Crystal Chain Gang. Supporting local artists is important to them. As part of these changes, they switched focus away from the store and more to their iconic Thunderpants, clothing design and production business. Working with favourite causes, a recent project is Philanthropants, where a significant part of the profit from special Thunderpants prints is donated. A new team now oversees Thrive. After three years as the main face of the store, Di Marment remains in place. Her clothing advice is valued by long-standing customers, and she’s responsible for the eye-catching window displays and overall look of Thrive. Lucy McWhirter is the new shop manager and Martine Bijker joins Di in the shop and coordinates the new gallery space. Both Lucy and Martine come from film and theatre backgrounds, and yes that does include The Hobbit. Martine was art department props co-ordinator, first in the workshop ensuring everything was

made, and near the end on set, getting those props to the right place at the right time. Lucy’s arts degree and background led her into marketing and publicity, with Capital E in Wellington. A two-year Wairarapa resident, she loves living and working in the same place “for a creative and ethical company”. She is working on upgrading the Thrive website, marketing and buying. “We source as many of our additional labels as possible from New Zealand, and also make a point of offering interesting and slightly quirky brands like Otto & Spike knitwear, and Hikkepik children’s wear (made in Greytown).” ucy and Di say Thrive customers are stylish, individual and they enjoy wearing timeless pieces that also have a sense of fun. They love being able to accessorise at the same time, with shoes, bags and jewellery on the spot. “The Backspace Gallery is to be a community space, and is available for artists and organisations to book. To be as flexible as possible, we plan to have a three-week exhibition per month with one week for more ad-hoc shows and one-off events. “We want people to be involved and not intimidated. Please come and ask us about the space, or just pop in to see what”s happening as you pass Thrive” encouraged Martine. A recent exhibition by Renze Bijker included 40 striking gestural studies in charcoal and ink wash, of the same willow tree. “Linking to that theme, Renze brought in a small kowhai tree in a pot, and we invited visitors and their children to create their own drawing of the tree. We got nearly 80 drawings, displaying them on the wall, and invited bids in a silent auction. The kids loved getting the proceeds, with our commission donated to Project Crimson to sponsor a tree.” Opening March 5, Featherston-based painter Megan Campbell will exhibit her first Wairarapa solo show in 10 years. Her deceptively naive paintings are full of detail and have gained her national recognition, including being a Wallace Awards finalist on several occasions.

SPREADING THE GOOD WORD This coming spring the small Wairarapa township of Featherston will be a celebration of everything to do with books, writing and reading discovers Katie Farman.

Pete Monk, Kate Mead, Lincoln Gould, Mary and Peter Biggs

F

eatherston is a treasure chest of literary wonder just waiting to be opened says Kate Mead. As director of operations for Book Town Featherston, the inaugural two-day literary festival being held in the southern Wairarapa township this October 17–18, Kate hints at exciting times ahead. “Literary lovers are in for a treat this spring with Book Town Featherston. It will be a weekend of book madness,” she says. Featherston resident Kate, a production manager and presenter on Radio New Zealand Concert, is part of a team of motivated organisers bringing the global concept of Book Town to the region. She will be joined by other local residents including chair Lincoln Gould, CEO of Booksellers NZ; Peter Biggs, chair of the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency and former chief executive of Clemenger BBDO/Melbourne; his wife Mary Biggs, owner of the successful business Lavender’s Green and photographer Pete Monk. “A Book Town is a small rural town or village in which secondhand and antiquarian bookshops are concentrated,” she explains. “Most Book Towns have developed in villages of historic interest or of scenic beauty, with the most well-known being Hay-on-Wye in the beautiful Welsh Borders which each May brings together writers, poets, comedians and novelists from around the world to debate and share stories and inspire visitors. Former US President Bill Clinton famously declared Hay’s Festival as “the Woodstock of the mind”. We hope in time, that Featherston’s Book Town can do the same.”

12 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2015 Issue #37

Up until recently, the only other town in the Southern Hemisphere that lays claim to being a Book Town was Clunes in Australia, a 90-minute drive from Melbourne. Last year, Kate along with Peter and Mary visited the pretty colonial town as part of a reconnaissance. “We came away feeling so inspired after visiting Clunes. We spoke to those involved, we picked their brains for advice and information and gleaned heaps of data. They were just as excited as us and are keen to attend our first event this October.” When Wairarapa Lifestyle magazine went to print, the full programme for Featherston Book Town had yet to be released. However it will feature workshops, a book fair including stalls with rare and second hand books as well as talks by leading authors and illustrators. There will also be events specifically for children. lready there has been a groundswell of movement within the community to get involved. At one of the first community meetings held earlier in the year dozens came to the ANZAC Hall to volunteer their time or show their support. “We’ve been overwhelmed, but not surprised, by the community support for Book Town. All three Featherston schools are behind us, local writers and illustrators are putting up their hands as well as book sellers,” says Kate. “You could say it’s been a meeting of minds.” This year’s inaugural Book Town will be part of Kokomai: Creative Festival Wairarapa which will be held throughout the region between October 16– 26, 2015.

From Beijng to Carterton, with camera When Qing and Stephen married in a Martinborough vineyard, they had no idea that a decade later they would be photographing other people’s Wairarapa weddings. Kay Graham explains.

T

he couple first met in China in 2002, where Stephen was teaching English at a language school and Qing (pronounced Ching) was studying fine arts. They married a year later in his sister’s small vineyard in Martinborough; it was Qing’s first visit to New Zealand and a world away from her busy Beijing hometown. “I loved the natural beauty of New Zealand. I took lots of photos of the green countryside, forests and rivers, beautiful beaches and interesting small towns; it was all so different. My friends enjoyed my blog and photos, and maybe that was the start of my new direction,” she wondered. Originally trained as a doctor, Qing practised medicine in a community hospital in Beijing before concluding that this was not for her. As Stephen puts it, “she is really too sensitive to be a doctor, and is much better placed as an artist. Feeling faint at the sight of blood may sound amusing to others but really it’s not. So it was better to leave medicine, although disappointing as her father and grandfather were doctors.” Exploring many creative paths, Qing topped her fashion design class and started her own studio in Beijing. She also sketched and painted, in oils and watercolours. Using photos to record scenes or prompt a mood she wanted to capture later in paint, Qing realised she was as interested in the photography itself. Consequently, she expanded her artistic and technical capabilities and invested in quality equipment. The notion of becoming a professional photographer was quietly simmering in her mind. In 2012, Stephen and Qing moved to New Zealand and live in Carterton. They have set up their own businesses, working from home and establishing themselves in the community. “After living in highrise apartments in crowded cities like Beijing and Shanghai, we were ready for a more peaceful lifestyle. We felt a connection with the Wairarapa, and the move to Carterton has been good for us. In China we were far removed from the land; while here we can help with my sister’s grape and olive harvests, for example,” Stephen observed. Photographing Hospice Wairarapa’s 2013 Wine Auction fundraiser was a significant step for the fledgling photographer. Choosing Qingster Photography for her brand, she reveals this is Stephen’s nickname for her.

Stephen and Qing

“I like to stay in the background and shoot people relaxed and unawares, using available light. The candlelit marquee gave some very special effects,” she explained. “This project opened my work to the public, and the feedback strengthened my confidence. Although I had to learn a lot the hard way about technical issues and equipment, I felt my previous arts training in the use of light and composition helped me a great deal. “A Beijing travel company was keen to promote weddings in New Zealand, and asked me for photographs. This triggered my working with models, hair, make-up and other specialist suppliers like Astra Bridal and Wharekauhau Lodge to produce promotional images. “Happily, we shot some images at the Martinborough house and vineyard where Stephen and I were married,” she smiled. ther community events followed, including a children’s dance event in Hawkes Bay and the Martinborough Olive festival. This exposure resulted in developing new relationships and added commercial photography to her portfolio. The Hospice Wairarapa Country Christmas broadened her experience into still life. Working with Masterton photographers Judy Wagg and Geoff Walker, the team produced gorgeous images of 12 houses, a historical barn and a church, all decorated for Christmas. Qing summarises “I enjoy the variety of assignments, and will continue with community events. In future I want to focus mostly on informal portraits, especially children and weddings. “Stephen assists me, and as a good videographer extends my range of services, especially for weddings. We are a good team” she concluded. www.qingster.co.nz

Bringing The Nation to Gladstone

The Borthwick family has a long and proud history in the Wairarapa with meat, farming and wine. This autumn, current

guardians of the land will extend the vision of the family name. By Katie Farman Paddy and Sarah Borthwick with business partner Liz Pollock.

F

ive generations of Borthwicks have kept guardian over Te Whanga, one of New Zealand’s iconic sheep and beef stations in Gladstone. The property, established in 1936 by PJ Borthwick and used as a training farm for returned servicemen after World War II, is now home to 10,000 sheep and 700 Angus cattle. In recent years the Borthwick name has also become synonymous with wine thanks to the founder’s great grandson, Paddy Borthwick, who owns the award winning Borthwick Vineyard on Dakins Road. With 85 percent of his wines exported to Asia, Europe, Canada, the USA and Australia, Paddy has come up with a novel way to extend the wine label’s name domestically. Paddy and his wife Sarah have formed a new business partnership with event manager Liz Pollock, the latter who runs the hugely successful Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival. Their new business is Nation Events Ltd, New Zealand’s only mobile events and function venue. “We’ve bought this versatile truck called the Nation Mobile Event Centre that is like an adult’s Transformer toy,” says Paddy. “The 16m long semi-trailer has walls that fold out transforming it into a 220sqm covered space that can accommodate up to 250 people and be used for a variety of functions – special occasions, break out rooms for corporates or event management headquarters.” The sleek, black truck also features air conditioning, a sound and video system, a heat pump, an 8m long American oak bar with eight beer taps and full back bars of display space and two large fridges. You could say it’s a premium bar on wheels. “Nation is very chameleon like and it fits into whatever environment you put it,” says Liz, the company’s general manager. “It’s the ideal mobile venue to host clients, provide brand presence at sporting occasions or a great place to have a huge party.” Originally commissioned for Te Papa for the TREATY 2 U exhibition, the truck toured 35 towns and cities in New Zealand in

16 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2015 Issue #37

2006. It was then used as a mobile events centre before transforming into a “pop up bar” on the intersection of Bealey Ave and Papanui Rd in Christchurch – the site of the heritage-listed Carlton Hotel which was pulled down following severe damage from the city’s two big earthquakes. “This truck is remembered with great affection by those in Christchurch as for a while it replaced something dear to Cantabrians’ hearts,” says Liz. Now, the truck will be based at the pretty Borthwick Vineyard and be available for hire either onsite or off-site. Its versatility means it can be used at other regional or national events such as BrewDay, equestrian events or A&P Shows or private functions such as weddings. Michelle Kirkpatrick, business development manager for the Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park says NATION will have positive spin-offs for the region, especially around conferencing. “Today’s conference and incentive clients are seeking unique and quality off-site experiences to enhance and give their events a point of difference,” she says. The Copthorne has partnered with NATION and Borthwick Estate to create a unique off-site dining and wine experience, which can be tailored to meet clients’ different needs. “Being able to offer an experience that combines team building activities, beautiful food and wine in a setting unlike any other in New Zealand, and only 15 minutes from the hotel is a fantastic proposition.” To demonstrate how mobile NATION is, the truck will have its first public outing at the Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival on March 7th.

Top Crew: Cheryl Watson, Sharon Cretney, Helen Pocock and Sue Keene.

In a ride like no other, Julia Mahony spends a shift with two crews at their Wellington Free Ambulance base in Masterton.

T

he whirlwind trip down Chapel Street is over in seconds. Small vehicles pull swiftly to the left, long truck and trailer units lumber to wherever they can find space. The light-and-siren filled journey through a sleepy, late-morning Masterton is perfect except for the man strolling across our path staring at his cell phone. He doesn’t glance up as the Wellington Free Ambulance glides past, driven by emergency medical technician Cheryl Watson. Cheryl is guided to her destination by shift partner, paramedic Sue Keene. At a Masterton house, two boys have been attacked by wasps. Cheryl and Sue quietly observe the kids while their mother gives details. Despite promises of flashing lights, the frightened boys choose Mum to take them to hospital: Cheryl and Sue carry the sore little bodies to the car. Back at base – in a house with bedrooms, lounge and a kitchen next to Masterton fire station -- Cheryl and Sue catch up with the other ambulance crew on day shift, intensive care paramedic Sharon Cretney and paramedic Helen Pocock. The four women agree the Wairarapa arm of the service is unique, with a different pace and nature and a more “stoic” community attitude, especially among the elderly. “They may be showing signs of a stroke or cardiac problems but don’t call us straight away – people should never hesitate to call,” Cheryl says. A former IT manager and aged care co-ordinator, she was at Masterton’s VTNZ station waiting for a warrant of fitness five years ago, when a man went into cardiac arrest. Cheryl did CPR and he survived. Soon after, she saw an ad for ambulance volunteers and is now full time. www.wairarapalifestyle.co.nz

“I suppose it was meant to be,” she says. “I still meet with the man I helped at VTNZ every year – he’s in his 80s now.” Wellington Free Ambulance has a Wairarapa crew of 24 paramedics and six volunteers. Staff work two 12-hour day shifts and two 12-hour night shifts, followed by four days off. Yes, they are allowed to nap in the bedrooms at night - Cheryl sleeps with her boots on. Wairarapa has more crashes on its open roads, more farm incidents and fewer non-emergency call-outs than Wellington, although Cheryl recalls a man wanting a sticking plaster after his old one came off in the shower. There are lots of stories: Sue has helped deliver five babies, attended a stingray attack and while working in Queenstown, she attended an injured Italian skier found to have a salami stuffed down the front of his suit. “You’d go nuts if you didn’t have a sense of humour,” Helen says. “Just the things people say to you. We once transported an elderly lady to hospital, dropping her cat off at a cattery on the way, as she was so worried about it.” Three years ago, Wellington Free Ambulance took on Wairarapa’s emergency service duties, with bases in Masterton and Greytown. For Sharon, who holds the most advanced qualifications of the four women on this day shift, it’s all about community – she is also a much-valued member of the Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade. “All emergency workers are part of this community, we live here and there’s a good chance we’ll know the victims,” she says. “Relationships stand out in the Wairarapa.” These no-nonsense, genuinely caring women are getting on with helping Wairarapa people in their practical, steady way. You may meet them one day. You’ll be in good hands. Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2015 Issue #37 - 17

From Silverfox to Foxbox – One Man’s Guitar Obsession

Take a retired creative director, musician and record producer with a lifelong guitar fancy, put him in a Wairarapa home workshop, give him tools and materials and presto! Simon Burt

- the ‘Foxbox’ guitar label is born. By Simon Burt. Alan Galbraith with his Fox Box reso - aluminium saucepan lid put to good use the boost the sound

A

lan Galbraith – who records under the moniker ‘Silverfox’ – moved to Greytown with wife Sue two years ago. Having started his working life as a professional musician, Alan moved into production in the heady days of 70s pop music, working with seminal Kiwi acts like Mark Williams, Rockinghorse, The Yandall Sisters, Craig Scott and many others. Several years later, tiring of the record business, Alan found himself working in the world of advertising and crafted a career as a creative allrounder, variously working as a copywriter, art director, creative director and producer – often all at the same time. Ever since Alan can remember, he’s had a ‘thing’ about guitars. “I’ve never been a great player, I’ve just always totally loved the things – more so than the music itself, really” he says. Alan likens the infatuation to his other interest, trout fishing. “Same thing – I’m more interested in the gear than the fish.” This ‘thing’ has seen dozens of guitars of various shapes and sizes come and go from the Galbraith household, most of them pulled apart and put back together for one reason or another, along with a longstanding desire to direct his passion into something a little more “useful” than making ads. Cue the idea of making cigar box-type guitars, inspired by a recent trip to Australia and a seller at a Queensland market. Traditionally a cheap two- or three-stringed instrument made from – believe it or not – old cigar boxes and other discarded materials, Alan wanted a more sturdy, “crafted” and playable instrument so has only used an actual cigar box for one of his creations. He uses traditional luthier’s materials for what are “not true cigar box guitars, but somewhere between that and a ‘real’ guitar.” While some of the earlier creations were made using ‘found’ materials such as wine or whiskey boxes, he has started making the boxes himself which allows for unique and custom designs.

18 - Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine AUTUMN/WINTER 2015 Issue #37

Alan spends a lot of time making sure that his pint-size players behave as much like grown-up ones as possible. “I want them to stay in tune and have nice actions – I don’t want anything to leave the workshop that I wouldn’t play myself.” They are made with proper working electronics and traditional luthier’s timbers and fret materials. “My ultimate aim is to make something like Bo Diddley’s famous rectangular-bodied Gretsch.” Having started making them, Alan feels he’s come full circle from his early musical days in Nelson. His first two instuments – electric guitars - were home made, almost a neccessity in those times when imports were rare and the local instruments were often out of reach for young musicians. o date there have been ten Foxbox guitars made, six of which have already been sold. “It’s a major sense of achievement to create something and have someone want to buy it. It will never be a get rich scheme, but making an object that people can enjoy is a real buzz.” The next steps in the Foxbox evolution are creating true, individual decorative items in collaboration with Alan and Sue’s artist daughter Lucy, and building an online resource for cigarbox style guitar enthusiasts. “I’d like to do some more playing and recording and make information available for people who might buy these things and want to know what they can do with them. There’s quite a bit on the web already, but I’d like to put my own slant on it, do my own thing.” Alan sees the Foxbox business as a stepping stone to making full scale instruments and also intends making some cigar box-style ukeleles and a scale version of a Gibson Flying V. Foxbox Guitars are available from ‘Industrial by Design’ in Greytown. Like on facebook www:facebook.com/FoxBoxGuitars

SLEEK, INTELLIGENT AND FAST

High over Martinborough’s Te Muna Road vineyards, two young karearea (native New Zealand bush falcons) are practising their flying and hunting techniques. Susan McLeary tracks their progress. Photography by Peter Monk.

H

onour and Pari were just balls of fluff when they arrived in Martinborough in late October last year, from Rotorua’s Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust. “Their growth rate is phenomenal,” says Jane Lenting. “When hatched they weighed 20g and a month later were at full adult weight of around 350g. About the size of a magpie.” Jane has spearheaded the community Martinborough Karearea/ NZ Bush Falcon project to supplement falcon numbers in the Wairarapa, supported by DOC and local wineries through Wairarapa Winegrowers and Wines From Martinborough. “Practical and financial support from local vineyards has been fantastic” she acknowledged. Despite being voted Bird of the Year 2012 and celebrated on $20 notes, there are fewer than 10,000 falcons in the wild. Listed as “nationally vulnerable”, they have been seen only rarely near Martinborough in recent years. “Our primary goal is to ensure the survival of these magnificent birds. They are sleek, intelligent and incredibly fast,” says Jane. “Just how fast is not really known: the simplest answer is very very! They are thought to be New Zealand’s quickest bird, gliding very high in the sky surveying their surroundings before attacking at high speed. “Their diving speeds mean falcons can help vineyards keep down numbers of grape-loving pest birds, such as starlings and blackbirds,” she said. The project followed Wingspan and DOC guidelines for reintroducing

birds. A ‘home base’ artificial nest, known as a hack box, was built by volunteers on the Escarpment Vineyard in Te Muna Road. After only two weeks the hack box was opened to allow the birds freedom to come and go as they wished, returning to the comfort and safety of home and food at will. Typical teenagers. The project is going well, as the birds have adapted well and are making small kills to supplement their feeding programme, which is tailing off accordingly. An early setback was when the third chick (Hohoro) was taken by a predator. “The birds are banded and have tiny transmitters. We believe Hohoro was blown off-course by the November gales, and as a youngster could not achieve enough height to identify her surroundings and fly home. “It was very disappointing but we knew there would be challenges like this for the project – and the birds. “Fortunately Pari and Honour are flourishing, and starting to be seen all around the Martinborough area. We track their increasing range with telemetry, but sightings are very important. They like hanging out around the golf course and Todd’s Road, it seems. “If anyone sees either Honour (green leg band) or Pari (red band), it would help us track their movement and provide the project with valuable information if you report sightings on our Facebook page,” Jane concluded. Supporting the Community WBS have been supporting local people and the local community for over 140 years. Katie Farman discovers just how much this company puts back into the community.

W

hen Vicki Thompson puts up the Wairarapa Building Society’s (WBS) flags during this autumn’s Chocol’Art Festival they will be flying the name of an organisation that has been at the heart of the community since 1873. ure, the logo may have changed and the company’s red, teal and charcoal colours aredifferent to the original red and white colours of last century, however the company’s fundamental philosophy to actively support the community still remains. “It’s extraordinary for a company of this size that we have remained true to our roots after all these years, “ says Vicki, WBS marketing manager. “We’ve weathered two world wars, the Great Depression and the recent global financial crisis and we’re still stable and we’re still supporting our community through sponsorship and returning the majority of our income either by way of interest, salaries and wages or in the goods and services we purchase.” The WBS is the region’s only locally owned and operated financial service organisation and provides savings, investment accounts and finance options for residential, rural and commercial property. Located in Queen St in Masterton with nine staff, WBS is the product of the 1980 amalgamation of three Wairarapa-based building societies including the Permanent Investment and Loan Association (established in Greytown in 1873), the Tararua Permanent Building Society and the North Wairarapa Permanent Building and Investment Society (both established in the 1930s). The latter having merged in 1960 with the Masterton Permanent Investment and Building Society (established in 1876). In its formative years the company used a unique method of marrying up its investors with those who wanted to borrow money. “Once upon a time you’d be given an ivory marble with a number on it, later replaced with a Bakelite marble during the 1940s, which was placed into an oak barrel and spun – kind of like an early Lotto,” says Vicki. “If your number came out then you were able to take out a mortgage to buy a house.” The oak barrel and Bakelite marbles are housed in the company’s archives alongside old advertising material dating back to the 1960s. There’s even a poster from the heady borrowing days of the eighties advertising great interest rates of 22 percent. These days WBS is online, remains flexible with their finance options and prides themselves on “old-fashioned” service. “You’ll never get an automated message here. Building

relationships with our investors and our clients, especially in this day and age, is really important, and is our point of difference with large banks.” While Vicki has been in her current role for 18 months, she has a long career in customer service having worked as cabin crew both domestically and internationally with Air New Zealand for many years. After moving with her family to Masterton 15 years ago for lifestyle reasons, she commuted to Auckland Airport’s international base regularly “enjoying the juxtaposition of both worlds”. But when the opportunity came up to work in Masterton she grabbed the chance. ow working alongside CEO Kim McCabe, CFO Derek Anderton and operations manager Andrew Bond, Vicki works hard to ensure WBS gets behind community initiatives. These include sponsoring a myriad of organisations and events such as Athletics Masterton, Golden Shears, Hospice, Cancer Society, bowling and golf clubs, JA rugby, netball, A & P shows and the Moki $1000 and Superfish to name but a few. “Ninety-five per cent of our income goes back into the Wairarapa community in terms of sponsorship. You invest locally, you borrow locally and the local community benefits … it’s a win, win situation,” she says. This autumn they will be backing popular events including the Wairarapa Balloon Festival, the Breadcraft kids’ triathlon and events held at the Masterton Motorplex.

The team at RIVAL Wealth

FIVE FINANCIAL TIPS FOR NEWLY WEDS Y

our wedding day is approaching and while getting financial advice will be down the list during the build up to this wonderful occasion, you should prioritise it very soon after. The idea is not to go overboard but tick off a few boxes as you venture into a new stage of life. TIP 1: PREPARE Cash Management- have the conversation. You’re getting married so it’s safe to assume you are committed to each other emotionally. However it’s really important to be on the same page, complete a combined budget, and commit to each other financially as well. TIP 2: PAY Focus on personal debt, happiness doesn’t come from owing people money. Get that unnecessary debt reduced as soon as you can, e.g. Personal loans, Credit Cards, Car Loans etc. Take advantage of 0% credit card interest offer that banks now give. Budget for the wedding and don’t go into debt just for one day- it’s the days to come that really matter.

TIP 3: PROTECT Income Protection and Life Cover will give you an ongoing income to reach your goals if you get sick or pass away, meaning money is taken care of for your new spouse. We know two things - we will pass away, we just don’t know when; and once you pass away you don’t earn anymore for your family. TIP 4: PLAN Consider how you want your retirement to look and if you’re not in KiwiSaver already give it some serious thought. Have a will written up or amend your previous will, as they become void when you get married. If you pass away without a will, your family could miss out on their inheritance, plus face a lengthy and costly court process to appoint an executor of your estate. TIP 5: PARTY Go for it! If you take this advice you’ll enjoy security and a lot less stress – knowing you have taken care of the important things. You can now settle into a fabulous future, achieve your common goals and feel free to get on with a happy marriage and everything in between!

Effortlessly Feminine Style UK-born bridal designer Johanna Hehir may have lived and worked in some of the world's most glamorous locales but it was still a 'wow' moment when she arrived in Greytown, one that clinched her decision to move to rural New Zealand. Anne Taylor met her at her newly opened Greytown boutique.

J

Johanna and Fianna

Anne Taylor.

ohanna and her family – husband Paul and four children - had holidayed here several times before but never ventured to Napier, Gisborne or Wairarapa. Paul is a Kiwi and his grandfather had farmed near Masterton. "We came through Manawatu Gorge last July and we all liked it. I think it was the mountains that appealed," says Johanna. "I liked the village feel of Greytown. It was somehow familiar but looked quite distinct from other towns." After a whirlwind career in fashion design that has seen Johanna working for top UK and Australian design houses, and running her own boutiques in London, she is keen to establish 'Johanna Hehir Bridal' as a New Zealand brand. She has already noticed our brides are "a little more relaxed", and she is looking forward to experiencing distinctive Wairarapa weddings. "I'm also keen to do my first New Zealand photo shoot so if anyone knows of a beautiful local interior, please get in touch." Johanna has hit the ground running, arriving in peak local wedding season and continuing to supply eight UK stockists, several in Ireland and a store in Manhattan, while bringing out a new collection each year. Her "effortlessly feminine" wedding dresses are made to order and feature delicate hand finishing, with all sewing done in New Zealand. Some are reminiscent of Downton Abbey gowns and tea dresses, and Johanna loves teaming period elements - such as an Audrey Hepburn style 1950s bodice – with something modern such as a floaty organza skirt. "Mum was one of the first designers in London to move away from the big meringue dresses to evening style wedding dresses," says her justifiably proud eldest daughter Fianna. Fianna has been working in her mother's shops since her late teens and now, at 22, is an integral part of the business too, working as a bridal stylist, and managing marketing and social media. Paul runs the business side of the enterprise, which he wants to do alongside a rural lifestyle. Glimpses of Johanna's past as a costume designer at Dublin's Abbey Theatre can be seen in her romantic creations. "That was such a wonderful first job," says the literature-loving designer. Here, she honed qualities that have since served her well – working to tight deadlines, superb fitting skills and diplomacy, being the "middle person" in between actor, designer and director, and ensuring everyone was happy. After Dublin, she and Paul moved to London where she worked sewing, finishing and pattern cutting for top designers such as Zandra Rhodes and Catherine Walker, who designed for the Princess of Wales. "It was exciting getting your bundle of work and seeing the name of a celebrity like Shirley Bassey written on the top."

In the late 80s, Australia beckoned and doors opened at Myer, David Jones and the top bridal design houses of the day. Working with Teena Varigos exposed her to the full razzle dazzle of Greek weddings in which the extended family is also dressed in finery. She launched her own fashion label in 1993 and retailed her first bridal collection in 1998 from her London boutique. She describes a wedding dress as the most important dress of a woman's life: "Sometimes a girl can look amazing in a dress but she feels it is too much for her. She has to be comfortable. We want to help the bride bring out the best in herself." The reward comes with that moment of joy in front of the mirror. Johanna confesses she loves change and moving forward. New directions include combining white with blush and ivory, and developing a two in one dress, the dress underneath being able to be worn again after the wedding. "I love dressing individual women, they make the most beautiful brides," says Johanna. Looking through her portfolio, the result of 25 years of designing, certainly confirms that.

her own fashion design studio in Beijing and Shanghai, Qing brings an advanced aesthetic to her work. Her experience in creating unique made-to-measure garments for clients has now been transferred to ensuring that the unique essence of her subject, be it a wedding or engagement couple, or a child or family portrait, is captured to everyone’s satisfaction and delight. With the right equipment and technical skills, together of course with an empathy with the people involved, the traditionally “classic” wedding and portrait shots are not especially difficult for a professional photographer – and where Qing aims to truly delight is with her ability to “be there” for those wonderful and fleeting exchanges and interactions that can only be caught in the moment. . . . She knows that ultimately it is these lovely unplanned moments which will continue to make you smile, make you proud and perhaps bring back that certain “mistiness” to your eye long after you’ve grown accustomed to the beautifully crafted shots sitting there in their frames and albums. Qing is a passionate visual artist and she can be relied upon to bring fresh eyes to anything you may ask her to do. Johanna Hehir Founder and Creative Director, Johanna Hehir is a British born designer with over 25 years experience, who has lived in Ireland, Australia, England, and now resides in New Zealand. ENTICE CATERING The Entice team of Alice Buchanan and Jennie Smith has been catering for weddings for over 15 years, and has a wealth of experience behind them. In that time they have come to know the importance of choosing the right service providers for your day. “So often we hear sad stories about weddings where things have gone wrong, and it’s so unnecessary, it’s such a shame” says Alice. “Most people have been guests at weddings, and have an idea of what they want, but turning ideas into reality is where our experience comes in.

When it comes down to it, the most important thing is that everything runs like clockwork, the food is amazing, and afterwards everyone is raving about the day.” A recent bride’s mother emailed the Entice team; Hi Alice and Jennie, Thank you so much for the excellent catering of Hayley and Matthew’s wedding. We had so many positive comments regarding the delicious food, generous quantities and the proficiency of all the catering staff involved. You two are amazing and I enjoyed your calm easy going manner! We would definitely use Entice Catering for any future weddings or parties we may have. Kind regards, Rosie “This sort of response is fantastic”, says Jennie, “We frequently hear lovely feedback from customers, and it is great to know we have made their special day amazing”. Served with chocolates, fresh or dried fruits, ginger, fruit paste and even cup-cakes (for those who don’t eat cheese) a cheese wedding cake can be a very interesting wedding talking point. We will mature your cheese to perfection for the day, and assemble if required. The addition of flowers, ribbons and “brides and grooms” by you or a willing helper, will give your wedding cake its point of difference. You have the choice of round, square or a mixture of both with the different types of cheese. Miles (cheesemaker) has even been known on occasions to make some small, but sweet, heart shaped brie !!. Popular choices in the past have included Mt Bruce Havarti, Sunset or Tinui Blue, Manchego or even the sweeter Emmental. We will also provide additional cheese for catering purposes. Make an appointment, visit the shop in Lansdowne to discuss and taste and we will do our best to ensure that your wedding cake is tasty, novel and quite unique!! Phone Kingsmeade, First Street, Lansdowne, Masterton on (06) 3787178, 9 - 3.30 p.m. Mon - Friday and 10 -1 Saturdays. Perfect Platters erfect Platters are here to be part of your special day and ensure your guests go away with happy memories of your celebration. We help you be that responsible host by looking after your guests during the essential photograph time between the service and a more formal wedding breakfast . While your guests mingle, enjoy their glass of local wine and chat with each other, our canapés on platters at weddings will be a great alternative to a sit down meal. One of our clients called this a “Toast and Taste” which we thought was a perfect name! Platters allow you to provide a little taste of different foods and can make a small amount of more expensive food go further. For instance an oyster nicely served (how about an oyster shot or breaded and fried and served with a spicy remoulade sauce on a tasting spoon) or a small crayfish savoury or duck pancake allows your guests to sample something a little special without it breaking your budget. At Perfect Platters we offer a full waiting service (heating, plating and presenting food) and will ensure we leave the venue kitchen clean and tidy. If preferred, we can also provide food already plated and ready to serve.

Joxer Daly’s Steak and Ale House is a place of good old fashioned eatin’ and drinkin’, where the music plays loud and long into the night and the craic is ninety. The staff know you well and treat you as one of their own. Stay on the right side of them and your pint will always be the perfect one. Quiet solicitude is their manner, and discretion is often the order of the day, because it might not have been the night before. Wait till you taste the food! It’s fine and fare, and you won’t be needin’ to call for second helpings. Eat your fill, and slake your thirst with ales and local wines served at the peak of their condition. When it’s over, the very aftertaste will be prompting you to call again soon. Joxer Daly’s is a sanctuary, a haven, a place of respite and restoration, of good times had by all, and better ones to come. It’s where you’ll always find a welcome, a good bite to eat and the devil knows what else, if you’re lookin’ for it.

Claytown: a work of inspiration R

ecreating Greytown in clay was a novel way to encourage members of the community to work alongside the Wairarapa’s professional artists. Over 30 members of the public joined renowned local artists Maggie Westergren, ceramicist Sam Duckor-Jones, art therapist Janie Nott and stylist Craig Thorburn in creating a piece of enduring art modelled on Greytown’s pretty colonial buildings, its people and its animals. “We wanted members of the community to work alongside established artists in creating something relevant and appealing to Greytown during the Greytown Arts Festival,” says Janie. “We chose to use the medium of clay because working in 2D allows for a range of expressions; it’s forgiving and can be used formally or loosely. Also, people these days don’t often have the chance to work with clay, so it is novel in that regard.” The Claytown village was made over a five week period, however the final art work wasn’t unveiled until February’s Greytown Arts Festival much to the delight of all those involved. “It’s always a little bizarre when you begin a large community art project like this because you don’t know how it will turn out,” says Janie. “We found we had a concept at the beginning but as people got hooked on their creations – the quirky people and animals, firing them in the kiln and then painting them - the project changed and grew over time.” Greytown newcomer and renowned national stylist and designer

www.wairarapalifestyle.co.nz

Craig Thornburn was integral at putting all the individual pieces together at the end to achieve the final art work. Janie says the result stunned all those involved. “Everyone was so surprised and proud of what they achieved ... the overall impact was very powerful.” The community art project was just one highlight during the festival. Other highlights included the Greytown Bike n Hike along the popular Greytown Rail Trail; the opening of Fernside Gardens, 20 acres of landscaped gardens that includes a rhododendron walk, ‘secret’ walled garden, native New Zealand garden and oak ‘cathedral’; and a twilight market. The Greytown Arts Festival is held every two years.

Laurie’s Garden Yarn

L

ast year we grew a crop of hydrangeas, as usual we had trouble getting the blues to be blue, as they always turn pink, which is a reaction to a higher than required the PH 5.2. to 5.5 level.

To get blue hydrangeas in the garden, aluminium, sulphur or some other acidifying element is usually present in the soil, but because we were growing in bark Laurie from Garden Barn I assume the acidifier was leached from the mix very early in the growing process, hence the pink hydrangeas. We could have added coffee grounds, fruit or vegetable peelings, oak leaves, or even grass clippings. But in our circumstance this is not a practical way of solving our PH problem. It does however highlight the importance of monitoring PH levels. Soil pH is an indication of the acidity or alkalinity of soil and is measured in pH units. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14 with pH 7 as the neutral point. As the amount of hydrogen ions in the soil increases, the soil pH decreases thus becoming more acidic. From pH 7 to 0 the soil is increasingly more acidic and from pH 7 to 14 the soil is increasingly more alkaline. Measuring Soil pH Soil pH provides various clues about soil properties and is easily determined. The usual method of determining soil pH is by a pH meter, available from any good garden centre There may be considerable variation in the soil pH from one spot in a garden to another. To determine the average soil pH it is necessary to collect soil from several locations and combine into one sample. PH Affects Nutrients, Minerals and Growth The effect of soil pH is great on the solubility of minerals or nutrients. Fourteen of the seventeen essential plant nutrients are obtained from the soil. Before a nutrient can be used by plants it must be dissolved in the soil solution. Most minerals and nutrients are more soluble or available in acid soils than in neutral or slightly alkaline soils. Some acid soils (pH 4.0-5.0) can have high concentrations of soluble aluminum, iron and manganese which may be toxic to the growth of some plants. A pH of 6.3 promotes the most ready availability of plant nutrients. If you are eating your own vege’s you need to ensure your plants are getting maximum amount of nutrients. Some plants, such as azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, white potatoes and conifer trees, tolerate strong acid soils and grow well. Some plants do well only in slightly acid to moderately alkaline soils. However, a slightly alkaline (pH 7.4-7.8) or higher pH soil can cause a problem with the availability of iron and can cause chlorosis (severe yellowing) of the leaves which will put the plant under stress leading to decline in general health and eventual death. Soil pH also influences plant growth by its effect on activity of beneficial bacteria that decompose soil organic matter and are hindered in acid soils. This prevents organic matter from breaking down, resulting in an accumulation of organic matter and the tie up of nutrients, particularly nitrogen, that are held in the organic matter. Changes in Soil pH Soils become acidic as a result of rainwater which leaches away basic ions (calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium) and mulching, which releases carbon dioxide from decomposing organic matter and root respiration dissolving in soil water to form a weak organic acid, and the formation of strong organic and inorganic acids, such as nitric and sulfuric acid, from decaying organic matter and oxidation of ammonium and sulfur fertilisers. Strongly acid soils are usually the result of the action of these strong organic and inorganic acids. Lime is usually added to acid soils to increase soil pH. The addition of lime replaces hydrogen ions and raises soil pH, thereby eliminating most major problems associated with acid soils, but also provides two nutrients, calcium and magnesium to the soil. Lime also makes phosphorus that is added to the soil more available for plant growth and increases the availability of nitrogen by hastening the decomposition of organic matter. The best lime to use is Dolomite lime from ground limestone high in magnesium. The amount of lime to apply to correct a soil acidity problem is affected by a number of factors, including soil pH, texture (amount of sand, silt and clay), structure, and amount of organic matter. In addition to soil variables the crops or plants to be grown influence the amount of lime needed.
