HAPPINESS! “Happiness, Happiness, the greatest gift that I possess” – if the words of the song are true, why do so many of us so often feel unhappy?

We all want happiness, and it is, whether we know it or not, the motivation behind everything we do. Yet we cannot quantify it - we can’t go out and buy it; it can’t be given or received.

So what is happiness and why can it seem so elusive? Understanding the answers to these questions increases our ability to find, create and keep happiness! Happiness has been extensively studied in recent years and show that we are no happier than we In the words of James were 50 years ago, Oppenheim despite having more The foolish person opportunities, choices, seeks happiness in and ‘possessions’ than our predecessors had. the distance; the wise The ‘Pursuit of person grows it under Happiness’ suggests

his feet.

that we have to chase something external to achieve it, and yet, when it was coined, the phrase simply meant ‘practice happiness’ – discover how to create it, then make it a habit. Whatever works against our happiness at this time – constant bad news, advertising (you’ll be happy when you buy this/look like this...), expectations, high-pressure living, our brains’ capacity for negativity – the answer really lies in our becoming aware of the nature of both happiness – and us. When we take time to explore how we function in the world, and how emotional states affect us (our behaviour, our actions – in fact, our whole lives) we begin to unlock the key to experiencing happiness, whatever our circumstances. Knowing this means that we can work practically to create more

Some facts well worth remembering about Happiness: Happiness comes from within, (even though external successes/ possessions can give us temporary satisfaction). ● Happiness is a state of mind and body, with positive emotions and feelings (e.g. well being, peace of mind, joy) – supported by the release of endorphins to make us feel even better. ●

8

● Happiness

is a continuum – a line stretching from deep despair to utter bliss, and along which are many points / degrees of happiness. ● Happiness leads to success and creativity. When you feel good – you do better! ● Happiness needs practice – you can’t simply decide you will be happy now!

By recognising that there are different types and levels of happiness (and that it is not a ďŹ nite destination), we may realise that we may have been searching for and expecting the wrong thing. We may have put Happiness beyond our own reach.

happiness in our lives in two ways - by paying attention to what blocks it, (and minimising that); and by noticing what gives us greater joy, and maximising that! By recognising that there are different types and levels of happiness (and that it is not a ďŹ nite destination), we may realise that we may have been searching for and expecting the wrong thing. We may have put Happiness beyond our own reach. The potential for happiness is everywhere, anytime, just one thought, one observation, perhaps one change of mind away. Gratitude, appreciation, noticing the good and being present all lead to the gift of happiness within us. Simply knowing ourselves is a huge step towards experiencing a life full of happiness and remember - it is not a ďŹ nite goal, it is available at every stop along the way. Enjoy the journey!

The

RAINBOW CONNECTION What is it about a rainbow that makes us stop and stare at such a wonderous sight? The beautiful arch of colours reaching across the sky, resonates with each and every one of us bringing a smile to our faces and stirs our immaginations...

10

‘Richard of York gave battle in vain’ - that was the mnemonic I learnt in school all those years ago to help me remember the colours of the rainbow red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. For those of you who are already familiar with chakras, you can easily make the connection with the rainbow colours. Each chakra is in constant motion and resonates to a particular wavelength of colour. Red being the base chakra with the lowest vibration,

Each chakra is in constant motion and resonates to a particular wavelength of colour. THE CHAKRAS and violet above the head with the highest vibration. The word Aura, refers to the electromagnetic field surrounding a person. Soma, is the ancient Greek work for body. Combined together, as AuraSoma, we begin to see the person as an ‘energetic being’. In the Aura-Soma rainbow connection, the aim is to have a sense of an overall balance of energy and harmony. The intention is to connect with each chakra, noticing the energy in that particular area of our body, before moving on to the next chakra. Imagine that you are ‘firing’ each chakra like a piston, before moving on to the next chakra. If the energy is stuck at any point, it can indicate an area of conflict that the person is holding on to. When you are feeling ‘off-colour’, one or more of these chakras is usually out of balance.

If you have ever seen the Aura-Soma bottles on display, you probably have not failed to notice how bright and colourful they appear. I have from time to time been asked by a curious passerby what is contained within these bottles of liquid light. Well, the answer is colour, herbal extracts, essential oils, gem and crystal energy. Your choice of bottles will reflect your energetic being, and can provide support to re-balance your rainbow connection. By applying AuraSoma to the body, the subtle energy field is restored and revitalised.

If you wish to know more about the Rainbow Connection, I will be arranging a one-day workshop in the early Autumn. Teoh Berry Aura Soma Practitioner Psychotherapist MBACP, PG Dip 07977 443536 teoh.b@mac.com

HYPNOTHERAPY An introduction & ‘health warning’! In this first of six ‘Radiant’ articles Integrated Therapist Sarah McRobert explains what hypnotherapy is, how it can help & where to safely find it.

12

H

ypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis in psychotherapy by professionally trained, certified practitioners. Clients are gently guided to experience a pleasant state of deep relaxation with a heightened sense of self-awareness & personal control allowing them to access inner resources so making the positive changes they desire. Hypnosis can promote physical, emotional & psychological wellbeing to improve quality of life. Long-term unwanted habits can be removed, replaced with positive healthy thoughts & behaviours, or destructive messages from the past & irrational fears dealt with. Safely used in conjunction with conventional medicine alongside other treatments, to relieve stress & control pain, increasingly doctors & other progressive paramedical professionals are recommending it to or practising it with patients. Described as a wakeful state of focused attention & heightened suggestibility with diminished peripheral awareness, contrary to popular myth, no-one can be hypnotised against their will nor forced to say or do anything they do not want to. Completely natural & safe, there are no unwelcome side effects - when managed by a trained & skilful therapist, benefits can be long lasting & are often permanent. Hypnosis can access early memories & for some clients, past life experiences, that may help to inform, liberate from & so resolve current issues. Used alongside skills such as Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) & Thought Field Therapy (TFT) hypnotherapy can be an incredibly powerful & wonderfully therapeutic experience. However, in 2009 the BBC’s “Inside Out” programme highlighted organisations willing to validate unscrupulous individuals cashing in on the increasing popularity of hypnosis as promoted by bona fide TV personalities such as Derren Brown & Paul McKenna. As with other complementary therapies, the sheer breadth of local practitioners

Hypnotherapy has proved highly successful in many & varied situations including: ● Depression & Anxiety ● Panic Attacks & Phobias ● Loss/ Bereavement & Stress Management ● Eating Disorders & Sleep Difficulties ● Weight Control & Stop Smoking ● Fertility & Child Birth ● Menopause & Relationship Issues ● Performance Enhancement & Motivation ● Self Esteem & Confidence Building ● IBS & Tinnitus ● ME & Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) available can be initially daunting but a small amount of advance knowledge when researching will facilitate best value for money & personal safety. The Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) is generally recognised as a “gold standard” of independent & externally verified hypnotherapy qualifications, being a minimum requirement for membership of professional bodies such as the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH). Finding these within a website or advertisement demonstrates the practitioner has undertaken sufficient basic training, works to industry agreed standards for practice & codes of ethics while maintaining a minimum level of experience & continuing professional development.

Future ‘Radiant’ issues will explore in more depth Hypnotherapy & associated therapies. Sarah McRobert - Hypnotherapy 07733 024235 sarah@sarahmcrobert.com

PARADISE FOUND Kamalaya Retreat, Koh Samu, Thailand Founded by John and Karina Stewart in 2005, Kamalaya, the multi-award winning Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa on the tropical coastline of Koh Samui, Thailand, is a holistic wellness experience that integrates healing therapies from East and West, in a breathtakingly beautiful natural environment...

14

16

Founders Karina and John Stewart

Conceived and founded by John and Karina Stewart, Kamalaya was originally intended for a site in the Himalaya. However, when John visited Koh Samui in 2000, he discovered a piece of land that immediately captivated him with its special energy. He was especially drawn by a cave that once served as a place of meditation and spiritual retreat by Buddhist monks, and with this discovery he knew that he had found the ideal home for Kamalaya. Kamalaya translates as ‘Lotus Realm’, an enduring symbol of the unfolding of the human spirit. Taking a unique approach to complete wellbeing and personal fulfilment, Kamalaya transcends the usual spa experience to offer opportunities for self discovery and life enhancement through diverse traditions of healing and holistic lifestyle concepts. The intention at Kamalaya is to provide a seamless experience for guests, with no boundaries so they can experience wellness beyond their treatment at the Wellness Centre. The holistic wellness services are at the core of the Kamalaya experience and accommodation and other facilities are natural extensions and expressions of the concept and vision. >>

17

Feel Life’s Potential

The Shakti Fitness Centre, herbal steam cavern, relaxation and swimming pools offer facilities for nurturing body, mind and spirit, while the art gallery hosts exhibitions of contemporary artists. The healthy, inspired cuisine is a fusion of Eastern and Western culinary traditions based on fresh, tropical produce. For many people, our modern, fast-paced world has disconnected them from their own powerful source of healing potential. At Kamalaya, being reconnected that that source can be a profoundly transformational experience. Kamalaya’s focus is not on individual services, but on how the different treatments, therapies, activities, environmental aspects, cuisine and people come together to create a synergistic wellness experience. The principle of synergy is an essential part of the Kamalaya concept and is at the heart of the alchemistic Kamalaya experience. Regular programs include medicallybased detoxification programs and others, to address issues from stress relief

18

and burnout to weight management. Kamalaya also offers monthly signature retreats in Detox and Yoga for those that prefer to discover wellness in a supportive group environment. For those who are uncertain about what they need, a Kamalaya Wellness practitioner will craft a personalised program. Kamalaya integrates holistic medicine traditions from East and West to offer a menu of over 70 therapies and treatments. In addition to massages and body treatments, the menu includes Ayurvedic therapies. Traditional Chinese medicine, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, emotional and spiritual healing and other holistic services such as cranio-sacral therapy and sound healing. Optional daily classes are open to all guests in holistic fitness practices that range from Pilates, yoga, chi gong and meditation to adventure hikes and core fitness classes. The opportunity for personal one-on-one sessions is also available. Kamalaya is a member of Healing Hotels of the World. >>

19

The Recipe for Restful Sleep The Sleep Enhancement program is the newest addition to Kamalaya’s ten existing wellness programs. Kamalaya co-founder Karina Stewart formulated the Sleep Enhancement program in response to a need from guests. The focus is to re-establish healthy and restful sleep while addressing sleep issues, during a guest’s time at Kamalaya and also for the long term back home. Sleep difficulties are addressed through a combination of core treatments and therapies drawing

20

from naturopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, massage therapy and mind-body balance. Treatments incorporate Shirodhara, Royal Ayurvedic massage, acupuncture, yoga, herbal foot baths with foot massage, the addition of herbs & supplements as well as mentoring to deal with lifestyle factors and personal issues. Sleeping issues can have a base in a range of different health imbalances. Various reasons for disturbance include; biochemical, physiological, lifestyle, dietary,

psychological and emotional causes. An inadequate amount of sleep has been associated with higher risks of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and more recently colon cancer. Depending on the cause, it can take from days to months to re-establish a good sleep cycle. Programs of various lengths will be available to choose from starting with a five night minimum. A five night stay at Kamalaya with 5 night Sleep program starts from 85,200 Thai Baht.

for her own and her family’s very sensitive and eczema-prone skin, she set about creating truly effective formulations, based only on organic herbs, plant oils and natural active ingredients. The formulae and products, still handmade by Margaret, are unique, and the philosophy is simple: All ingredients must have therapeutic value, as well as making the product a joy to use. Herbs and essential oils are used in therapeutic concentrations for optimum benefit. Plant oils must be virgin and cold-pressed so that they have their full antioxidant vitamin-content intact, so as to actively nourish the skin and protect it from premature ageing. The products are also free from all potentially unhealthy synthetic chemicals. Essential Care for the environment... As well as using organic ingredients,

SUPERFOODS

BEETROOT

Related to sugar beet, beetroot is a root vegetable containing a compound called betaine that is known to relax the mind and help with depression. Originating in southern Europe, it was first grown for its leaves, although now both the leaves and root are eaten. Here are some beetroot facts:

Beetroot is a member of the spinach family Beetroot can help cure acne and is a great skin cleanser Can help regenerate the liver In Greek times beetroot was used for its medicinal qualities, as a treatment for fevers, skin problems and digestive complaints

High in iron content which can help to treat anaemia and tiredness

Virtually fat free, rich in iron and magnesium

Good for the heart as it reduces the amount of homocysteine in the blood, which reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks

After many years of research in Germany, it has been shown that a glass of raw beetroot juice taken daily can be helpful in treating cancer.

Beetroot comes in many varieties, common ones include: ● Burpees Golden globe – an orange yellow variety ● Ruby red and Crosbys Egyptian Flat – dark red with dark green leaves and red stems. ● Detroit dark red and Bulls blood – dark red and light zones when sliced. ● Barbabietola Di Chioggia – concentric rings of red and white flesh ● Cheltenham Green Top – long rooted variety ● Albino – White ● Cylindra – long cylindrical

CHICKEN SALAD WITH CARROT, DAIKON, HOT MINT & CORIANDER by Uyen Luu

Vietnamese cuisine is always a favourite. Sweet, sour and salty, all at the same time, this chicken salad is perfect served with prawn crackers...

26

Serves 4 Cooking Time: 30 mins Prep Time: 30 mins Total time: 40 mins

Method 1. Cook chicken thighs in a pot with a lid with 1 litre of fresh cold water.

Ingredients

2. After about 7 minutes when the water boils, remove the scum that surfaces then add a stock cube. The chicken cooks for 30 mins in total.

CHICKEN 3 (460g) skinned chicken thighs 1 litre of water 1 Knorr chicken stock cube PICKLED ONION 1 medium red onion 3 tbs cider vinegar (aspall) 3 tsp caster sugar pinch of salt pinch of pepper SALAD 250g carrots - julienne 200g daikon - julienne 2tbs cider vinegar 1 tbs caster sugar 20g coriander - coarsely chopped 15g garden mint - coarsely chopped 15g hot mint (optional) coarsely chopped 70g banana blossom brought ready shredded (optional) DRESSING 2 birds-eye chillies (deseeded and finely chopped) 1 clove garlic (finely chopped) 1.5 tbs sugar 2 tbs cider vinegar 2 tbs premium quality fish sauce (Three Crabs) 3 tbs crushed/ blended salted roasted peanuts

3. Meanwhile, slice the red onion as thinly as you can and pickle with vinegar, sugar and a pinch of salt and pepper in a bowl, mixing occasionally. 4. Peel and julienne the carrots and daikon and place in a salad bowl. Then mix in 2 tbs cider vinegar and 1 tbs sugar to slightly pickle. 5. Chop the herbs and leave in a separate bowl. 6. Mix all the ingredients for the dressing together in a separate bowl, tasting for the balance of sweet, sour, salty and hotness. Add more chillies for more spice. 7. When the chicken is cooked, leave to rest for 5 - 10 mins. De-bone the meat and tear along the grain. Add this to the bowl of carrot and daikon with the pickled onion (discard the vinegar juice). Add the dressing and the chopped herbs. Mix well together. 8. Garnish with a few sprigs of coriander and mints and a sprinkle of peanuts. Serve with prawn crackers.

Beware of the

Biscuit Lady!

Most of us have been there, we decide to have a break from alcohol, caffeine, sugar, dairy, meat, wheat etc... at some point, often for health reasons. There is no doubt to the benefits of detoxing and eating clean. Benefits include weight loss, more energy, glowing skin, better sleep! Lovely! I’m also confident that every reader knows the dreaded side effects from the first few days of detoxing from a food or drink our bodies are used to and crave!... By Joni Clowrey

W

hat no one seems to document are the side effects detoxing has on your friendships! It seems to bring out the worst in our friends! My friend was doing a detox and one of her work colleges constantly berated her, teased her, accused her and generally waved sugary substances in her face (before polishing them off I might add!). We have named her Biscuit Lady. When we make a positive change it can often bring out the ‘Biscuit Lady’ in our peer group and families!! You know the one – at the mere whiff of a healthy choice they will accost us with plates of cakes and biscuits and wail to the sky in lament that you dare decline their offer of a glass of wine! They coax ‘just one slice wont hurt’ in sugar sweet voices. Jamie bell tweeted the other day “How come when you decide to make a lifestyle change everyone suddenly becomes a nutritionist?!” I thought that was funny and true. Now I’m not saying Biscuit Lady should not eat her biscuits, she has every right to eat and enjoy them. But, for the person on the receiving end of her wrath it is hard to stand stong in the face of other people’s jealousy of your willpower! But you know what? Whatever lifestyle choice we make, we need to be prepared for our friends and family

28

to react strongly, with the addition of the side effects of caffeine withdrawal. This can be a tough task! So here’s my guide to mentally preparing yourself and remaining positive and strong in the face of detox adversity!

1

Be sure of your reasons for your choice. Is it because you want to have more energy or lose some inches? Or, is it because you want to be stronger and leaner? If you are sure of reasons for wanting to do something you will have a great grounding in staying strong.

2

Remember as Biscuit Lady attacks you with plates of Bannoffe Pie (a personal weakness!) and fresh baked bread, that most people feel a bit of resentment when somebody has the will power that they themselves lack! That is not to say everyone should resist Bannoffe Pie (!) but you should not feel obliged to eat it in order to appease Biscuit Lady’s guilt! Be sensitive, keep smiling and firmly decline.

3

Try and create positive situations for you to socialise where the temptation of whatever it is you are

resisting will not be too strong. Be imaginative. Every social situation does not HAVE to involve food and drink!

4

Do your research, if you know you are going somewhere for a meal, check the menu ahead of time to see what is available that you are happy with. Even better YOU suggest somewhere where you know you can grab something delicious that isn’t going to compromise the changes you are making to your lifestyle. I make a mental note of places that do great salads or serve brilliant vegetarian options. I often suggest these places when meeting up with friends because I know I can order with minimal fuss or discussion about my food.

5

Avoid discussing your detox or change you are making for a long time. Especially at a dinner table! Wherever I go people want to ‘talk’ to me about how I eat, but it always ends up with me defending myself and feeling frustrated. I also end up feeling sorry for everyone else there who just wants to enjoy their sticky toffee pudding. I try and change the subject fairly swiftly. This can be done by asking someone chatty an open question.

6

And last but not least, be kind to yourself. If you do have a moment of weakness, brush yourself off and keep going, don’t despair and raid Biscuit Lady’s cake tin! Every step towards your goal is a step in the right direction and punishing yourself will not help, exercising your will power is sometimes as tough as exercising your body but thankfully the more you practise using willpower the stronger it gets! So come on, you can do it. You can be strong. Don’t let other people’s insecurities stand in the way of the goals you have for your mind and body. Let me know how you get on! @fitnesswithjoni

The ancient art of

Qigong

How Deniz Paradot found a life-line in Silence and Qigong when faced with a debilitating condition. A true story of hope and inspiration, in his own words... In 1995 I underwent major spinal surgery, I was diagnosed with a medical condition called ‘Spondylolisthesis’ which in layman’s terms means a vertebra in my lower spine had shifted forward, displacing the whole of the spinal column. The diagnosis took well over 5 years and meanwhile resulted in chronic back and leg pain, to the extent that I had to use a wheelchair just prior to my operation. Recovery was long and hard. I was an energetic and sporty young man and I found myself struggling to do the most basic and unconscious of tasks such as picking things up and going up and down stairs. I continued to spend the next few years ‘managing’, with regular visits to pain clinics and

32

physiotherapists and taking prescribed concoctions of pain killers, which the later just masked my continuous pain. Although my spine had been rectified and repaired, my body seemed to not want to work. Years of poor over compensating posture, carrying myself awkwardly and sleepless nights resulted in a general lack of mobility and muscle degeneration and admittedly I used to think “I am in too much pain I can’t do anything” so I didn’t, for a while. All these factors started playing havoc with my mind, I felt low, depressed, unable to fit in and lead a ‘normal’ life. So the only way forward I thought was to help myself and I went looking for a complementary treatment.

I researched acupuncture and thought that something so old must have ‘something good about it’. After a few months of treatments, I felt my pain easing combined with clarity of mind. Unfortunately, due to finances I couldn’t continue with my treatments so I tried the more readily available exercise of Yoga which I found too strenuous for my body. By complete chance I was speaking to a friend who was a yoga teacher and now a Craniosacral Therapist who mentioned Qigong, a low impact Chinese Internal Health Art which used the same principles of acupuncture (without the needles) through purposeful exercise. Years later I have not only surpassed my surgeons expectations I no longer take any medication for pain relief and my mobility is that of a normal healthy young man (even if I say so myself!). This relatively uncommon (in the West) art of Qigong helped me so much that I wanted to delve deeper and find out more. The roots and origins of traditional and authentic Qigong derive from the Taoists and Buddhists. So I started by spending some time at Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. Not only did I practice daily Qigong and silent meditation I also became conscious of mindful living, a way of life that urges people to find calm by connecting with the present moment. I’ve never had any desire to become a monk, but over the years silence has become increasingly vital to me. I know many people are fearful of it. As monks and nuns know only too well, you can’t hide from yourself in silence and it’s not always a pretty sight. But there’s much more to silence than facing the truth about ourselves, I soon realised that Qigong wasn’t just a

set of moves to help our flexibility and mobility. It was a physical practice of intention to repair, restore and revive our body, mind and soul. So whilst I stand in the quiet of my garden I become totally absorbed practising Qigong, so much so I have to set the alarm so I don’t forget to pick up the children from school. During these times I am totally unselfconscious, there is no me watching what I am doing or worrying about the past or future. In fact, I am unaware of me as distinct from anything else. Completely caught up in the present moment, I have no sense of time until I come to myself when the alarm goes off. These moments have, for want of a better word, the quality of timelessness about them. They leave me feeling wonderfully alive. I’ve had the same experiences in quiet woods and in the noise of the city. For others it comes when they’re making things, gardening, cooking, or being close with another person. Qigong has been deeply restorative for me, holding me through difficult times so that I feel completely wrapped up in it. When practising Qigong we find a space where we’re fully alive and fully present in the moment and there’s a great sense of all-enfolding presence, not absence. In today’s stress-filled world there’s a real need for such spaces, and you can create them anywhere, even in the noisiest of places. I have since trained and become a fully Qigong Instructor and continue my studies.

So, to share my fondness of this beautiful ancient Life Art, I invite you to enjoy your time of Qigong and silence with me at Be.Meditation In Motion.

WHAT’S IN A NUMBER? From your date of birth to your time of death numbers influence your every move! Numerology can help you to live in the moment and make the most out of your life by being aware of the energies that are available to you. It is quite amazing and tremendous fun when you realize why things are occurring in your life simply by observing and understanding the numbers around you.

No-one really knows exactly when numerology developed as a means of divination but the Ancient Chaldeans, Egyptians and Hebrew people all developed numerological systems. The teachings of Pythagoras (sixth century B.C) are a major contributory factor in the development of Numerology as we know it today. Pythagoras believed that the world was built on the power of numbers and taught that “all things can be expressed in numerical terms”. He believed that numbers determined the harmonies of music, and the movements of the sun moon and stars. Numerologists incorporate this belief and generally work with the numbers 1-9 plus the master numbers 11, 22 and 33.

34

With Numerology we work with the vibrational energy behind each number rather than the mathematical value. The name numbers allow us to tune into this vibrational energy and pin point positive and negative traits, and any special talents or gifts that a person may have. It is also sometimes possible to connect with Karmic issues which have been brought forward from

past lives . The date of birth numbers gives information on our current life journey and on the energies available for us to work with. This enables us to better understand our life path and where we are upon it. It can also help to show the kind of obstacles we may face as we journey through life and to understand the lessons those obstacles are designed to teach us. Numerology can often make sense of these difficult times and show us that there really is ‘a light at the end of the tunnel’. For those of us who simply have no idea what direction we are going in, or what we want to do with our life, numerology can show us what natural attributes we have and help us to make the best use of what we have. Often Numerology can simply reconnect us to our true self and remind us of just how amazing we really are. Having initially trained as a Spiritual Healer and Reiki Master I was led to Numerology through a series of Dreams. Once I had worked with Numerology I realized that it is a powerful tool for self healing and self development and have incorporated it into my healing work ever since. Many people who come for a reading have reached a turning point in life and Numerology can help to find direction.

1

Find a quiet place to relax, in a position that is comfortable for you. Imagine a shaft of pure white light energy entering into the top of your head, and owing down through all of your body until it reaches the soles of your feet.

2

Next, see the light turning into roots of energy travelling down into the ground through the earth, going deeper and deeper, becoming stronger and longer as they go further down into mother earth. Count slowly in tens until you feel 100% grounded.

36

3 Once you feel calm and grounded, imagine golden light energy of mother earth entering your roots and slowly travelling up to the soles of your feet. Feel the golden warmth entering your body and gently rising until it reaches the top of your head.

Take-10

We lead such busy lives, a ten minute meditation every day is a relaxing way and gentle way of taking you to a place of calm and tranquility. Follow these simple steps...

6 Concentrate on your roots, to ensure you are fully grounded. Slowly become aware of your physical body and your surroundings. After a few moments, you can bring yourself fully back into the space and make sure you drink plenty of water afterwards.

A path through the woods A look at debt and mental health. By Ann Hall

S

ociety has a view of debt – mortgage – good debt, ten credit cards used to pay off each other in an ascending cycle – bad debt. All debt is not bad, only bad debt is bad. Society’s sympathies are beginning to soften in this time of redundancy, unemployment and uncertainty about the future and anyone can be affected by an uneasy feeling linked to an uncertain financial climate. If we’re already fragile, suffering from anxiety and depression, we need to know how to take the first small steps to find that path through the woods. Mental health problems can cause severe debt, and severe debt can cause mental health problems. Debt is not just a financial problem, it causes relationships to break down, people can lose their homes and families can split apart. Nobody is immune, nearly half of the people who have suffered from, or have, mental health problems also have severe debts.

So what about those first tiny steps? If you’re feeling very low, you must speak to someone, soon. You are thinking that’s easy for me to say? Yes, of course it is. But if you are not quite brave enough yet to speak to a loved one – your partner perhaps, there is an army out there who are trained to help.

38

Should I talk to my doctor? Doctors should no longer be dismissive of mental health problems but they do still vary in their reaction. You will possibly already know if your usual GP is the right one in the practice to talk to, or if he or she only good with physical ailments. Don’t try to be brave with your doctor, let him or her know exactly how bad you are feeling. A good friend of mine was told by her GP that she obviously was not suffering from depression because she was wearing lipstick! She showed great courage and made an appointment with a different doctor and took her mother with her. So now your GP knows, is sympathetic and has put you on the waiting list for an appointment with the local mental health team who are well trained professionals who will listen to you and write back to your GP with a possible diagnosis. Your GP might offer you counselling but the wait will be long.

any of your creditors and this will stop them pushing you. Let your caseworker know you are having mental health problems and they will be able to get you extra protection. By now you should have brought your partner into your confidence and be working together, that’s one of the giant steps. You will eventually have the courage though, believe me. I know one couple where the husband was taking all the weight and stress until his wife realised what was happening.

Positive Changes Those were the small steps. Having taken them you are ready to find a debt counsellor. PLEASE don’t get landed with one of those who advertise on TV. If you take anything at all from this, let it be that you will only phone one of the non profit making debt counsellor organisations recommended by the government and financed by the banks to help you, not to help themselves. Look at them both, they are slightly different in style. If you look up either of these websites and browse through I believe you might find immediate comfort. There is no case of debt that cannot be solved. They do not judge and are there to help. You will find you have a friend who you will never meet, but will be at the end of the phone. Once you are talking to one of these nice caseworkers they will give you a reference number to quote to

Getting on with your life Knowing she was the tougher of the two she completely took over the whole problem and they are stronger than ever. They are quite happy to tell friends they can’t afford to go out to expensive restaurants and have to count every penny. And they can sleep at night. Not everybody is that lucky but you might have a supportive brother or sister or a really old friend. Don’t spill out your heart to someone who might not really be a trusted friend, and has not been tested by time. So now you know how to get through the woods you just need to take those first steps. Have courage and belief in yourself. As Christopher Robin said: “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.” Ann Hall is a solution focused hypnotherapist and psychologist in South Devon. www.annhallhypnotherapy.com

NATURE’S OWN HEALING Health and wealth with aloe vera products.

40

I discovered that it’s not as contradictory a concept as it sounds when I became unwell with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (auto-immune thyroid disease) several years ago. My form of thyroid disease can cause an out of control immune system, as well as the usual under active thyroid symptoms. The immune issues included asthma and hay fever , which kept me indoors with the windows shut during summer; and IBS (irritable Bowel syndrome) which was ever present and never seemed to abate. Luckily my friend Julie had started a business with Forever Living Products a couple of Happy and years before and told me of the healthy - Jean amazing health benefits that and John can be achieved from drinking aloe vera. Although skeptical, I’d been ill for two years so I was willing to try anything. She recommended that I try the plain aloe vera drink, which contains about 97% pure aloe vera inner leaf gel, first thing every morning on an empty stomach. She explained that I must make the leap of faith and keep taking it every day for at least three months in order for it to help. She also warned me that the taste, although not unpleasant, is a bit of a challenge. I won’t say that it happened overnight because it didn’t but, sure enough, I started to gain enough control of the asthma and hay fever in order to be able to attend a friend’s birthday barbecue. Soon after, the worst symptoms of IBS abated too. From my reading on the subject of aloe vera I found that it is considered to be an ‘immuno modulator’, bringing an out-of-control immune system back down to normal or bringing an under active one back up to par. Additionally, it helps cleanse the gut, reducing inflammation, and is fantastic at helping the body absorb more nutrition. It contains over 75 vitamins and minerals, an abundance of trace elements and seven of the amino acids the body can’t make for itself, making

it beneficial for vegetarians and vegans as wel. Julie also introduced my husband to Forever Freedom, another version of aloe vera drink, this time containing chondroitin, glucosamine (natural anti-inflammatories) and MSM (necessary for healthy connective tissue) with orange juice. She explained that this would be fantastic for anyone suffering with osteo arthritis, John had become an ‘ibuprofen junky’ because of this type of arthritis affecting his knees. Shortly after beginning to take this drink daily John was pain free for the first time in several years. But that’s not the only good thing that I found with the Forever Living Products range. Shortly after this, Julie asked me to take a serious look at beginning a business with FLP and when I studied their business model and looked at the full range which includes, skincare, personal use products, weight management and nutritional supplements, beauty and cosmetics, I decided to give it a try. The start-up cost was less than £200 and I love the products so much that recommending them to my friends and family happens naturally anyway. And now, with the economy the way it is, I find that the best bit of my business is introducing others to both the benefits of the products, as well as giving them this amazing opportunity to start their own home-based business which wraps around their family and job, giving them the chance to have a ‘Plan B’ in place should the worst happen with their job. My only complaint is that I didn’t come across Forever Living Products 20 years ago. Jean O’Donovan is an independent distributor for Forever Living Products. If you would like to know more about the products or the business opportunity then contact Jean on 01493 369086 / 07787 366792 or email jodonovan@btconnect. com or visit my online shop at www. jeanodonovan.co.uk It might change your health and wealth for the better too!

Art & Soul Psychic and Spiritual Art by Marie Long

I channel energies from the astral planes, higher realms, other worlds and dimensions through art, using a variety of mediums including encaustic wax, acrylics, inks, oils and pastels. I draw and paint guides, higher beings, landscapes, abstract colour images, totem animals and much more. My artwork is an expression from the soul of my own spiritual experiences. The pictures are like visual meditations; doors through which one can enter the beautiful and mystical realms of the spiritual. Spiritual art can be used as a tool for healing, meditation, personal growth and assist us in the ascension process and evolution of the soul. Look into the pictures and search within yourself to ďŹ nd whatever you need at this time. Some of the answers are bold and available for all to see and others are hidden and will reveal themselves to you only when you are ready to receive.

A fool for love

Crazy in Love HEAD OVER HEELS Blinded by love Falling in love

HEAD FIRST INTO A DITCH!

Any of these could have been my title so of course we have figured that love is many a crazy hazy thing! And so to my story...

Once again, I decided that I would go out in to the world and find myself a lover and a partner, with whom to share my present, my dreams for the future. I am Indian and I decided to go to an Asian dating night, something I never had before, so equipped with fishnets and a cute dress off I went. A few minutes late, as always, I arrived at a bare, vibe-less community hall in Baker Street. Everyone was already there. They all stood in a long straight line, ready to do the tango – yes that kind of dating night – but not! Two straight lines of people in a bland community hall – the Well they must atmosphere was awful. have thought I looked down my side of the the line and saw a the day had dawned – at that group of smiling women and thought ”You guys look lovely moment, all I and I’m sure it would be good could see were to talk to you in the break”. – MY UNCLES!! Across the way 6 men faced AAGH! When I by 30 women! Well they must have went for Asian thought the day had dawned dating that was – at that moment, all I could not what I had in see were – MY UNCLES!! AAGH! When I went for Asian mind.

52

dating that was not what I had in mind. All my prejudices rose and I fled! I am sure all uncles are pretty similar in every culture, I wasn’t ready for beer barrel bellies, though I have to say, I saw distinct fear in some of their eyes, like bambi’s caught in head lights! Not one step of the tango taken. Back out into the cold of London. Thankfully, I had left my coat by the door for a speedy exit! Returning to Brixton, at the bus stop on the corner of Elephant and Castle I fell, tripped and tumbled... I bumped my head... Crashed to the ground... Nose dived into the sharp rocks below – head first with no safety helmet. I met a man at that bus stop and fell in a ditch that I thought was love, and for a moment it was. I had been living in India in an ashram, my heart felt more open than it had for many months I was so ready for love, to connect, to be with someone. I WAS READY READY READY and I thought the universe was delivering... As I write this I’m trying to pin down what was going on in my mind. David was emotionally available, physically available-ish – he didn’t

want a girlfriend – he wanted a friend to see him through departing a long term relationship and two children that were being whisked away from him. I loved talking to him and felt listened to, I liked him. The glorious kissing phase The magical merging The broken eggshell phase He wasn’t ready, having justed emerging from a 20 year relationship – Buzzer says no! What was I thinking? I wanted connection and some level of commitment, but he wanted space. I did all the things that you’re not meant to do. Phoned every day, chatted every day, met up spontaneously, cancelled friends! I was constantly waiting to be with someone that I had given all my control to. Really I was concussed I guess a deep need in me for love, after so many other disappointments actually felt like this could be the one to build with, instead I took myself apart brick by brick until only a pile of rubble lay there. Eventually I knew there was no future so I left – and I felt in absolute agony. Agony about what? A loss of connection ? A loss of support ? A dream that someone else was going to be with me on my journey forward in to life ? Of not being in control, of being rejected, knowing it was going to end in the future ? It took me 6 months after the end of my relationship to stand up again. Three of those were for my body to find my head and screw it back on in the right direction and three to start thinking more sanely. But after 6 months I emerged OK! And that generally is the thing with

falling – you do get up Really I was again. I know that more concussed I guess is out there, I am a great a deep need in optimist and a great learner. I have my moments me for love, after of cynicism, but I’ve so many other learnt. I’ve learnt to wear disappointments a parachute and have a actually felt like this good headlight for when it could be the one to gets dark. I am a therapist, and I build with, instead am a woman and I am I took myself apart above all other things brick by brick until human, and I thank every only a pile of rubble painful, knee crunching lay there. embarrassing moment I have ever had; for from all of those things I learn to become more of who I really am. I am where I should be and so are you. I’ve learnt that even if a person does not love you the way you would like them to, your emotions are valid and it’s okay to feel crazy. It’s okay to admit that you need someone. Maybe the next one will be the one and perhaps your understandings of love will connect. Laugh at yourself and find a friend who will laugh at you to – really, it helps – having someone that you can reveal your nuttiest moments to is priceless. All your joy invested in someone else – a friend, a lover, anybody – why would you give them that power? I guess human beings have an inextricable need to connect and merge – to share. So my brothers and sisters to those who are wiser than me and those who have been as foolish, I wish you a mountain of love beginning from right inside yourself, stay whole and share xx www.shinecognitivehypnotherapy.co.uk jagdeepgulati@gmail.com

Bach Flower Remedies

Vervain

“Those with fixed principles and ideas, which they are confident are right, and which they very rarely change. They have a great wish to convert all around them to their own views of life. They are strong of will and have much courage when they are convinced of those things that they wish to teach. In illness they struggle on long after many would have given up their duties”. Dr Edward Bach

“Overcare for the welfare of others” Vervain personality type ■ Vervain helps people who feel that it is their responsibility to take care of everything and everyone around them. ■ They can appear argumentative, with fixed principles and ideas. ■ They have high principles and want everyone else to adhere to them, using the force of their will and enthusiasm. ■ They tend to be perfectionists who overwork, often becoming very stressed as a result. ■ They can also be extremely fanatical, and have a need for justice. ■ The negative Vervain state can cause a person to become exhausted, resulting in physical illness.

Vervain positive state Relaxation, self discipline and restraint

Once balance is restored through the

Bach Flower Remedies, the Vervain personality will still remain enthusiastic, but in a much more controlled and balanced manner. They will consider other people’s points of view and will be able to change their own, if the argument is convincing enough. They will be able to inspire others and gain their support with flexibility and calm.

Time is the wisest counsellor of all In the past I considered Angels as mere images of religious paraphernalia, something that was of no interest to me at all...

Now however, I know that this is not the case. These divine beings are non-denominational and will work with anyone who sincerely requests their assistance. My love of all things angelic recently began when I bought the ‘Messages from your angels’ oracle cards by Doreen Virtue. It is my daily practice to draw three cards each morning. The messages are always positive and uplifting, filled with so much love that it’s impossible not to feel inspired. Only once did I asl for a sign from my angel guides and immediately ‘knew’ that i would find it in my bedroom. Resting at the foot of my bed was a pure white feather. On another occasion, I was walking home when a white feather slowly floated down from the sky to land effortlessly on the palm of my hand. The primary tool that I receive guidance by is numbers, specifically time. Many times during every day, I glance at a clock, wherever I may be. The time is always 11 minutes past the hour. Sometimes this will happen as many as five times in one day. I also receive repetitive digits and sequences, which has lead me to purchase the ‘Angel numbers 101’ book by Doreen virtue. This little gem has enabled me to discover the significance of number symbology and to receive divine guidance through the simplicity of this message system. My celestial guardians even helped

to manifest a car! Had i been told three months previously that i would be driving again, I would have doubted the sanity of the messenger. My desire to drive was extinguished after the birth of my daughter, with a few minor but costly accidents, resulting in feelings of vulnerability and fear. But now, in order to move forward in my life, I needed to drive and overcome my fear. The day after I collected my car, my fear was realised as I faced my first solo journey of three hours to attend a spiritual development course in London. For three days prior to my trip, I drew the angel card Zanna- for protection in my family, vehicles, home and workplace. The feeling of comfort and relief I received from my angel card readings was immense! So with pounding heart and white knuckles I set off on my solo mission, I was walking home when a knowing deep down white feather slowly floated down that I was not alone and all would be well. from the sky to land effortlessly on the palm of my hand. At 1.11 as I glanced at the time, I began to relax and, with a wry smile, whispered ‘thank you’ to my celestial companions (as i sit and write and glance at the clock, the time is again 1.11!) my journey was more than physical and i arrived at my destination with an enormous sense of pride in my accomplishment. I send eternal gratitude to my celestial guardians, for the limitless assistance they bestow in every nuance of my life. The destination I am unsure of, but the amazing, serendipitous pathway evolving is a source of complete and utter joy!

Footloose Reflexology is the practice of applying pressure to the feet and hands utilizing specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil, cream or lotion based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands with a premise that such work effects a physical change in the body.

In simplistic form, reflexology is akin to giving the complete body a massage but done through the feet. It aims to relieve inflammation, tension and congestion so, if you have sinusitis, tense shoulders, a stiff back or are stressed then this could be treatment for you. Along with those three aims it can also help to boost the immune system, aid conception and induce labour! If you require NONE of the above it is still a wonderfully relaxing treatment

and most clients feel as though they are walking on air when they leave the treatment room and haven’t a care in the world. What should you expect from your treatment and therapist? Reflexology sessions last from 30 minutes to an hour. The client sits in a reclining chair placing the feet conveniently for the reflexologist’s work. The reflexologist use pressure, stretch and movement to work through the foot methodically. Technique is applied to the whole foot or hand. Sit back and relax. Or, ask for an on-going

58

assessment of stress cues of the feet; education in the location of reflex areas of the feet or education in how to apply self reflexology techniques. Ask about research relevant to your health concern. You should feel relaxed at the end of a session. How long that relaxation lasts is a good indicator of the effectiveness of the session. Make note of this and tell your reflexologist your response to the session at the next session. How long did the effects last? Your body knows what is good for it, your body will tell you when it wants another session. This can be weekly, fortnightly, three weekly monthly

or simply ad-hoc, listen to what it tells you. Expect the reflexologist’s application of technique to be within your comfort zone- not too heavy and not too light but at a level within your personal preference. Communicate this preference to the reflexologist. Expect technique application to be “dry,” without the use of oil, cream or lotion. The feet will be “washed” with surgical spirit and a light talc used to ensure the fingers of the therapist do not stick or slip on your foot. Use of other emollients constitutes a foot massage and not a reflexology session. At the end of the session a foot massage is usually given with a foot lotion to “wake” your feet. Use of any other tool or instrument is outside the professional scope of practice for a reflexologist. Do not rely on a reflexologist for medical help. The reflexologist is limited to complementing medicine not replacing it. We are NOT medically trained. Go on, give it a try, what have you got to lose? The Art of

Soul Midwifery

Soul Midwife is modern terminology for what used to be called a ‘wise woman’ or psychopomp. They would be found in most communities and could be called upon for assistance with births, deaths and often illness or health issues.

Soul Midwifery is aptly named as it pertains to ‘end-of-life care’, assisting another on an emotional and spiritual level to separate the soul/spirit from the physical form in the most peaceful and graceful way possible. One of the most important things to be mindful of is that each ‘individual energy’ has their own unique way of departing from Mother Earth. Our role is to support with love, respect and dignity an individual’s specific journey. For this reason ‘being’ in the ‘present’ each moment is key to benefiting the person you are assisting. We work as multi-faith practitioners and never draw upon our own religious agendas or individual belief system. Neither Shelly nor Corinne follow any specific religion but they are both deeply spiritual and intuitively believe that all religions come under the umbrella of spirituality. Heading here Death comes to us all in one form or another, so surely it is far better to be prepared – to have a plan, and this is where Soul Midwives can help. Just as expectant mothers are encouraged by their midwives to have a Birth Plan, so the Soul Midwife works with those who have life-limiting conditions to prepare

60

a ‘Good Death’ plan. Much can be done to ease the journey of someone at the end of this earthly life and to see their loved ones having a ‘good death’ is important for friends and family too. There are several ways a ‘friend’, as we wish them to be known, can be supported during their “end times” into and beyond this dimension, and these would be discussed with and incorporated into the Good Death plan. Spiritual Healing in the form of different types of attunements, one being Reiki, can be administered. Healing energy is accessed from higher dimensions, brought through the ‘higher self’ of the Soul Midwife/Healer and energetically transmitted first into the ‘friend’s’ auric field through the ‘subtle bodies’ and finally felt in the physical body. The most important aspect of this is for the intention to be pure love, this is very powerful. Touch A specific form of gentle but effective massage called Jam-Che, which has been developed from traditional Tibetan massage techniques, can also be used for relaxtion.

Sound Can be used for changing the atmosphere of the room and the mood of the dying person, but also assists any family and friends coming in and out to visit. It clears away any heavy dense energy from layers of strong emotions felt from all involved. A variety of instruments are used depending on the ambience you wish to create. Shelly and Corinne use singing bowls, gentle bells, drumming, gongs and rattles where appropriate, tuning forks that are of a certain frequencies and beautiful string instruments like harps or zithers. These can calm and soothe any confusion and angst, and create pleasant and loving feelings. Colour is also successfully used in the form of different tones of lightweight blankets. These are placed around or over the ‘friend’, on top of sheets and duvets if too uncomfortable on the body. Even if the colour cannot be accessed visually, the chakras draw the colour in, resulting into calming challenging and difficult emotions that require dispersing. Vigiling The most important assistance a person who is dying can be given is listening, hearing and witnessing them clearing away negative debris from their particular ‘lifetime’. This allows ‘space’ for recapitulation; a review of encounters with people to include hurts and harms perpetrated by an individual upon others, as a technique for forgiveness and releasement from past influences. This is different for each ‘friend’; these past hurts can be released from the present and/or past lifetimes. Soul Wounds are emotional traumas which can sit within our physical body on a cellular level. These traumas may have been created in their present life or energetically transported from past lives. Clearing unwanted energy from

the present day host body marks the way for the physical body to be relaxed enough mentally, emotionally and spiritually. In turn, the soul essence/pure consciousness can fly free unhindered, to allow for a dignified, peaceful and graceful death as possible. Death, as in birth, can be laborious especially if the soul has chosen to experience this as part of a life lesson or part of their soul mission. Even so, as a Soul Midwife, we are there only to observe, witness and give comfort using all or any of the above methods. Shelly and Corinne, in their Death, as in birth, can role as Soul Midwives, be laborious especially if the work predominately soul has chosen to experience by following their this as part of a life lesson or heart and intuition. part of their soul mission. Ideally a Soul Midwife is involved for many weeks prior to death so a relationship can be established, but often we are brought in fairly near the end and we can still work with the ‘friend’ to ease their transition from this life to the next. We work for the ‘friend’ and with their beliefs; and discussions are always under the control and pace of the ‘friend’ – our role as soul midwives is to provide a safe, loving space to support as good a death as possible. Shelly Coles and Corinne Bryant are Soul Midwives working in the East Norfolk & North Suffolk area and are currently holding monthly ‘Conversations about Death and Dying’ sessions in Acle to help break the taboo of death and spread the word about Soul Midwifery. Shelly also works as complementary therapist in Shamanic Energy Healing, Sound Therapy, Reiki, Reflexology & Metamorphic Technique, Corinne as a Sound Practitioner and Spiritual Healer. Cancer

your way Have you been thinking there must be something else out there to help with Cancer? Another way that can work safely along-side conventional medicine?

In this simple to use guide, Richard discloses some powerful techniques to support you through troubled times. he talks about the power of natural healing remedies, & a hands on healing system for helping bring the body back to a position it can fight Cancer.

The Reason The book came about because of a desire to help those who find themselves suffering from cancer to consider another option. And to say, conventional medicine and alternative therapies work well alongside one another. This book is not to put down the medical establishment in any way shape or form, but to say, don’t dismiss what may seem a little kooky or far out

to you, because this might just save your life. Is this false hope? I don’t think so. It’s far better to strive for something than have no hope at all.

Where ther’s hope, there is a chance And this is something you must keep in mind no matter how desperate the situation. if the cells in your body have mutated and created cancer, why can’t the proces be turned around, and instead create healthy ones? And when I put this to people who have cancer, it puts a different angle on their thinking. It opens their mind to change, it’s hope, it makes sense, it’s a structure to go by, and most importantly it’s about self empowerment and taking control of ones health. You believe and expect to get better, and that puts you in good stead before you’ve started the healing programme. Cancer, one of the words you don’t want to hear. The doctor is matter of fact, he says your chances are either good, or bad, but either one, he has just dropped a bombshell and you don’t know how to take it. When the tears dry and the numbness resides a little you find you have two options. Medical intervention in the way of Chemotherapy or Radiation treatment, or go home and enjoy what you have left before the

EDITOR’S RECOMMENDED READING

Cancer your way by Richard Hathaway is available from www.amazon.co.uk cancer ends your life. But what if there was a third option? Would you take it? Would you give it a go even if it was a little out of the ordinary? But I guess you are reading this book because you are in the mind set there must be another way, or perhaps the doctors have done everything they can and you have been told nothing else can be done. Well good on you for seeking answers and not giving up. Also, for allowing me the chance of showing you a way of looking at this whole cancer thing in a different light. Although I’m not going to tell you to stop treatment, and that it’s all bad for you, because what we are going to discover is there is a place for conventional medicine and complimentary medicine to work alongside one another. But first things first, my name is Richard, I am a healer and it’s a pleasure to meet you. I have worked with people suffering from cancer and won. As a healer I believe an unbalanced state can be

bought back from the brink no matter how bad it may be. Given a little time, & some change on your part, miracles can really happen. Just because you have been told you have cancer doesn’t mean you have to accept that’s it, there is another way, your way. The book is small but mighty, a testament to the power of our own minds, the capacity to take control of our health and our lives.

My name is Trish and I am an energy worker, & natural healing therapist... About Trish I’ve been channelling healing energy since 1996. Trained in Hypnotherapy and NLP from 1992-1996 Trained and hold certificates in Reiki 1, 2 & 3. Reiki 1 & 2 was from Alan Sweeney at The International Reiki Healing Training Centre in Margate, in 1997, and Reiki 3 was gifted to me from The Love Light School of Reiki in 2000.

Drawing on all of my learning and inspirations, I intuitively help the person as much as I can, to guide them towards their own complete self healing. I have trained and gained knowledge from Crystal Healing Therapies, Bach Flower Remedies, Reflexology and Chakra Energy Massage. I am the most down to earth healer I know, I do not have any particular religious beliefs although I like to think of myself as a spiritual person, and believe in aspects of lots of different Eastern and Western disciplines. I believe in the fairy realms (don’t we all) as I feel at one with nature and the

64

grounding of mother earth. I guess I just believe that unconditional love, given, without judgement, is the best form of healing I know. The same healing a mother gives to her child when she kisses a grazed knee. My intention is to give positive healing to all. I am a channel for the healing energy (like an aerial or funnel), opening myself up to the energy and allow it to flow through me, to my hands and into the person or animal that needs it, without conditions, or any questions asked. There’s no explanation for how or why this healing works, I just trust that the energy is from the highest place

possible and that the energy exchange is for the best of all concerned. Universal love holds no barriers, and given unconditionally, it will always flow to the correct source. It has never let me down yet! I do not guarantee how long the benefits will last (how can I?) and I NEVER claim that the healing will be a cure, that would be unethical and anyway, the energy only flows through me from a much higher source. What Happens during a treatment? People ask me what to expect when experiencing a healing treatment. Healing is very pleasant and relaxing and you may find a sense of peace comes over you. Some feel heat or a tingling sensation while others feel cold. I always channel colour with the healing, and some have seen vivid colours when receiving this energy. Some of course, see, hear or feel nothing at the time, but experience a positive change later on. I wish I could say it was instant, and for some it is, but for most, the benefits of this energy will be experienced over a period of a few days or weeks. With distance healing, all I can say is that the healing energy has a way of reaching you, wherever you may be and it will be sent to you with the most positive intentions and love, as always. All I ask is that you take the time to find a place to either sit or lay down to relax in, and keep an open mind. You can even be asleep, and awake feeling better and more positive. Healing can also be given to terminally ill people (with their permission). In my experience in this field, they feel more at peace, more accepting, and seem to experience less pain and suffering. Everyone benefits from healing. Just give it a try for yourself, and enjoy.

After a treatment Drink plenty of fluids preferably mineral water, to flush out toxins released into the system during the treatment. Please rest after a treatment so that the energy can work with your body. (It’s good to have a healing treatment in the evening so you can go straight to bed or put your feet up afterwards) Always book a treatment when you are not going to be busy afterwards, so that you benefit most from its positive effects. Most people feel very relaxed, slightly ‘spaced out’ after a healing treatment, or a little but shaky, this is a natural process as the energy flows through your body. This reduces stress hormones in the bloodstream and allows endorphins (the feel good chemicals) to be released giving you this feeling of euphoria. Very occasionally, you may feel unwell following a healing treatment, this is quite natural and is part of the ‘healing crisis’ some bodies go through as the toxins are flushed out of the system. You may sometimes experience aching muscles, slight headache, mild tummy upsets, and tiredness, and if this does happen, it will usually pass within 48 hours, as the body becomes balanced again. Please try not to expect immediate results. Sometimes it does happen (as do miracles) but more often, the positive results are noticed after a few treatments, especially if you have had your problem or illness a long time. For pain relief, though, I would expect the pain to have lessened by the end of the first treatment. MY INITIATION INTO TRANCE HEALING

Shane Frost wanted to be a Medium until fate intervened to allow him to discover his true potential of working with the spirit world.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR CHOSEN FIELD? Initially I never considered working as a healer. A very good friend of mine is a Reiki Master and I did my Reiki 1 and 2 attunements with him in 2006 and 2008 and I’d experimented with healing on friends and family but at that stage I just thought that any positive feedback was people just being kind with their comments. Back then I just wanted to be a medium which seemed so much more exciting than healing so finally in 2008 I plucked up the courage (with a lot of help from my wife Tracey) to attend the Power Within course at the Arthur Findlay College organized by Sandie Baker. My group tutor suggested I work with Healing Energies, and although a large part of me yearned to work as a medium, I trusted her guidance and decided to attend Steven Upton’s Trance Healing 1 Week the following year.

A few days after I arrived at the College my group tutor suggested I work with Healing Energies and although a large part of me yearned to work as a medium I trusted her guidance and decided to attend Steven Upton’s Trance Healing 1 Week the following year. The Trance Healing course was completely different than I expected and the first time I experienced sitting within the healing energies in this way I knew that this was the work I wanted to do. Up until then I had never experienced the closeness of the spirit world in the way I did during that first Trance Healing week. WHAT CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT? I attempt to treat any conditions but make no promises about the outcome as each sitting is an experiment. I believe that every patient will benefit in some way and therefore approach each healing in a non-prejudicial way with regards to existing conditions or ailments. Clients report a number of successes with twisted knees, shoulder pain, neck and back pain, tooth ache, arthritis and migraines. Pain reduction appears to benefit in particular during a high percentage of healings. Every healing

is different and I keep an open mind that there are no limits to what may be achieved and I believe that assists the healing process. WHAT ARE THE HEALING BENEFITS? It is my own personal belief that every patient benefits in some way, however this varies from patient to patient. Many benefit from reduced or removed pain. Others have reported improved sleep patterns. Some have improved physical conditions and others have reported improved emotional conditions. TAKE US THROUGH A TREATMENT FROM PREPARATION After lighting a candle I sit and mentally prepare for the healing sitting for about 30 minutes prior to the patients arrival. I don’t ask the patient for details of their conditions, as I find I work better with no prior knowledge. I will however keep confidential records and fill in details after the healing has taken place whilst they are present. My comfort is equally as important as that of the patients. This may sound selfish but that really isn’t the case. If I’m not comfortable then I cannot release my state of mind enough to allow the quality of attunement to persist during the trance healing session. Any mind ‘chatter’ has a detrimental effect to the healing process and if I am not comfortable and my mind is aware of any aches or movement needed, I’m detracting from the job in hand, which ultimately is to hold as clear a connection with the healers in the spirit world for the duration of the healing sitting. On average this is for between 20 and 30 minutes. Preparation of seating arrangements and the environment only takes a couple of minutes yet if not done correctly has a detrimental effect on the whole process so it of the utmost importance. I ensure a jug of fresh cold water is available and once the patient arrives

I pour a glass and place it in reach of the patient and pour a glass for myself. Once the patient and I are seated and I’ve done as much to prepare as I can I ask the patient for permission to put a hand on their back. I don’t feel that the hand has to be placed on the patient for the healing to take place as it is a co-operation of minds, however it can be comforting for the patient to feel your hand present as they are aware of where you are at all times. This simple physical connection can be reassuring. The patient is asked to relax and close their eyes. I close my eyes, visualise that the patient and I are wrapped within a large healing blanket and then send out a message to the healers in the spirit world to come and join us. I willingly give over as much control of my mind as I can to those working from the spirit world so they are able to move me into the altered state that best suits the work they are trying to achieve and this may change any number of times during a trance healing session. The quality of attunement or “closeness” achieved very much relies on my health, the ability to remove the days thoughts, my physical comfort whilst working, surrounding noise, and a number of other factors including what food I have consumed that day. I avoid eating and only drink water for around 6 hours prior to the healing sitting and have found this makes a big difference to the quality of the healing. I am never totally controlled by the spirit world. I can always return to a normal state of consciousness or awareness at any time as it is a co-operation of minds, however like any skill, the more it is practiced, the more natural a transition to the various achievable altered states of awareness becomes and the greater the quality of attunement. Willingness is essential as is a flexible mind. The level or frequency of

attunement required for different types of healing varies, for example healing of emotions feels to me like a very light state yet healing of bones feels like a much heavier denser feeling. Freely trusting and allowing spirit to move my mind to where they want it to be in my opinion allows them to be able to attempt the work they want to be rather than work I assume they want to do. I know the healing sitting has finished when the energies withdraw and I find myself sitting in the chair with my eyes open and no feeling of spirit influence in place. The patient will need to come back gently and be given time to adjust back to the room. AFTERCARE / HOW MANY SESSIONS DO PEOPLE GENERALLY ATTEND? Most people visit for 1 healing however I have had others visit for up to 5 sessions. I always let the person decide to contact me if they wish to revisit. I charge for my time and for this reason I don’t try to get the patient to make further appointments on the day of the healing. I prefer for them to see after a few days how they have adjusted to the healing and then they can evaluate whether they feel they would benefit from additional sittings. The healing can also continue for a number of days so it isn’t possible to make an accurate recommendation on the day of the healing. I do however give each patient a hand out when they leave which details the benefits of healing over a period of time and also addresses a number of frequently asked questions which are often not thought of until the patient has already left. I also ask them to be gentle with themselves over the coming days and to not change any existing medication without consulting their GP.
