Seasonal

Transitions By Rev. Danielle Marie Hewitt

I

Founder of the Temple of Light Community Director of the Academy of Light School for Holistic Seekers and Practitioners Publisher of Radiance Magazine, a periodical for Universal Consciousness Mentor and Practitioner of Holistic Healing Arts

have been hearing the expression “fifty is the new thirty.” I couldn’t agree more. For me, my life begins anew with each seasonal transition I experience. I recently surveyed a list of what are called “Winter-Spring” marriages defined as such because one person is significantly older than their partner. Most of the time there is an assumption of some ulterior motive, otherwise how could two such people find common ground? I met a man in our center who recently graduated from IT school and said he doubted anyone would hire him because he was in his fifties. He thought the season of his life rendered him an undesirable hire. I disagreed with him. As we move through our lives learning and growing, why do we place so much emphasis on when we get there instead of simply embracing the beauty of it? We, as humans, experience transitions in our lives. We grow and change as naturally as the seasons of the earth. Yet sometimes we struggle, resist, and even judge them. As a professional healing arts practitioner, I follow the teachings of one of my first mentors who advised we are our biggest and, most important, client. I apply my skills to my life as a priority because the clearer and more healed I am, the better I do my job. Occasionally, I feel frustrated if I am not transitioning through something at the speed or grace I want; but, for the most part, I am grateful for having the tools. When I am successful at working through something major, I appreciate it. It no longer bothers me it took

until my mid-fifties to do it. Would my life be different if I had worked through these things when I was in the Spring of my life instead of the Fall? Of course it would. However, would it have been natural, possible, or right for my destiny? I don’t believe so.

I am in the Fall of my life. My colors are bright, radiant, and bursting with energy. I am strong and clear about who I am and about what my life is. I enjoyed my younger years, but I would not go back for love or money. My adult children call me “old.” I smile and know deep inside I have many, many years before I will consider myself in my Winter season. And when I am, it will be a blessing although many do not think of it that way. Like the seasons, we are here but for a fleeting moment in time. I no longer look back with regret on what I could have, should have, or would have done. I now believe in looking forward.

How different would our experiences be if we only looked forward? Admittedly, my outlook was not always so rosy. Prior to practicing healing arts, I, too, looked back with regret, sadness, and anger. What changed? When I remember what those feelings felt like, the common denominator was a sense of lost opportunity. “You are only young once,” we say. I think those words make us feel as if “we’ve missed the boat” if we don’t figure out when we are in our Spring.

<< continued from page 7 I remember how thrilled I was when, years ago, my mother told me she decided to attend college and get her teaching credentials. She was a 49-year-old freshman. She graduated and taught for ten years before she retired. Many would have asked what was the point of doing it at that age? For her, it was something she always wanted to do …I loved that she didn’t let her age stop her.

The potential feeling of lost opportunity may hold us back in wishing the prior season was not gone or passed. For if the season of opportunity has passed, what can our future hold? You have only to look at the youth of today to see they do not hold our generations’ values of finishing high school, attending college and receiving a degree with some career enhancing value, getting a job, getting married, having children and planning for retirement. When we compartmentalize our lives with such stoicism, it’s easy to feel if we miss a building block we have somehow missed the opportunity to create our future. That somehow, the seasons will not transition smoothly. Many look at our youth today and fear for the future. I believe it will look different indeed, but would not give up on them so easily. Our younger generation may, in fact, be on to something. I will live until the age of 126, or so I tell myself. Whether it’s true or not it provides me with a sense my life isn’t even half over. It keeps me present and feeling like I can do anything. I have never felt so young. This sense of agelessness allows me to live in each day, each season, transitioning from one to the next without any sense of measurement if I have created all the building blocks in the past I need to create a future cemented upon those building blocks. Transitioning from one season in our life to the next can be done with ease and grace if we embrace the ideology building blocks can be created any time. We can change careers, create families; find new ways to be healthy and extend the quality of lives far beyond what we previously imagined possible. I can see myself hiking up Machu Pichu in my 90’s, why not?

The seasons in our lives can provide a way of gauging our maturity and wisdom, but they need not define or dictate who we are and what opportunities are afforded us. I graduated from college with a degree 8

in accounting, became a CPA, got married , raised four children, retired, and founded the Temple of Light, not in that order though. My future holds a Ph.D. in metaphysics, grandchildren, travel, expansion of the Temple to Los Angeles, Inland Empire, San Diego, Sedona, or even Las Vegas, and not necessarily in that order either. My future holds things I haven’t thought of yet. As I continue to experience the Fall of my life and at some point move to the Winter, I know the seasons will provide more opportunity, not less. Rev. efore you learn about The Prayer Project, a world-uniting movement to have everyone offer prayers three times a day for three minutes a day (3x3) to bring our world into harmony and ecological balance, I thought it would be educational to look at how other great religions and cultures pray. Sufism

One beautiful approach to prayer is that of the Sufis (Muslim mystics). The Sufi prays five times a day for a total of about 40 minutes, employing bodily movements, or “forms.” Proper performance of the prayer helps the person achieve harmony with God, the cosmos, fellow human beings, and the self.

The use of form or bodily movement in formal prayer may seem strange, especially to those who think of the spirit as an abstract principle. The Sufis believe the spirit is intimately coupled to the physical body through the spiritual body. The physical movements are believed to enable the person also to move

By Paramahansa Jagadish the spiritual body. The physical motions, together with prayers and chanted invocations, serve to transport the person into a closer union with the Divine. Yoga (Derived from Sufism?)

This program of body movements, coupled with prayer and rhythmic chants in Sufi practice may have correspondence with yoga, which is seen as a set of psychophysiological techniques. Diligent application of the yoga techniques of verbal repetitions (mantra), bodily postures (asana), breath control (pranayama), mental focus (dharana), and meditation (dhyana) is believed to lead to selfrealization, liberation, and morality.

According to author Mircea Eliade, “Yoga is a process which transforms the human body into a cosmic body. In doing so, we are enabled to partake in the wider existence of the material and immaterial universe.” Judaism

Prayer is performed three times daily, but days like the Shabbat

(Saturday) and other holidays are special and more prayers are said. The most important prayers are Shema Yisrael and the standing prayer, called Amidah. There are usually two elements: intention (kavanah) and ritual (keva).

Jews may use the rationalist or educational approach to prayer, championed by different rabbis. The rationalist approach believes prayer should enable the person to experience the Divine through intellectual contemplation and philosophy. The educational approach looks at prayer as a means to develop specific attitudes in the person. In Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah), prayer is believed to rearrange the fabric of creation. Christianity

There is no set frequency for daily prayers in Christianity, but daily prayer is encouraged. There are a variety of prayers, ranging from the spontaneous to the prescribed texts. The Lord’s Prayer is probably the most repeated prayer. continued on page 10 >>

September/October 2014 Radiance

<< continued from page 9 Some prayers are intended to support meditation. The prayers of the rosary and the special Novena (nine day prayers) are popular among Roman Catholics, while the Jesus Prayer is favored in the Eastern Rites and Orthodox Church. Islam

Muslims pray five times a day, repeating a short ritualistic prayer (Ar. Salat; Pers. Namaz) as they face Mecca. They have several formulaic supplications (dua) applicable for specific uses (for example, prayer before meals). Personal dua may also be used when a Muslim wants to converse with God. Buddhism

Prayer is usually a partner to meditation among Buddhists, although it plays a subsidiary role. This stems from the belief of the Gautama Buddha that liberation and enlightenment can be attained through meditation. Buddhists may call on myriads of Buddhas for intercession on their path to enlightenment. Hinduism

The religious traditions of Hinduism include a wide range of prayers, including ritual prayers and philosophical reflections. There may be some chanting of complex verses or deep meditation on a specific deity. The target of the prayers may be the fulfillment of individual needs or spiritual enlightenment. Jainism

The spiritual path to self-realization is personal in Jainism, and spirits 10

Radiance September/October 2014

cannot help them achieve it; however, Jains think spirits have influence. The devout pray to the 24 saintly teachers (Tirthankaras) to help them acquire right knowledge. Shinto

Prayers in Shinto emphasize personal wishes or requests addressed to the spirits (kami); followers of Shinto do not engage in long prayers of praise or devotion. The influence of Buddhism on Shinto is strong. At the start of prayer, the supplicant drops coins into a box and attracts the attention of the kami by clapping the hands (sometimes, a bell is rung instead). Strengthening Spirituality

Regardless of the culture or motivation from which it springs, prayer is universally used to strengthen a person’s spirituality. The common theme running through the religions mentioned is seeking enlightenment, be that spiritual, further knowledge, more peace, tranquility, or understanding of the Supreme Being. We all have a fundamental yearning for spirituality, to be connected with the Being which transcends self – and everything else. Yet enlightenment is a garden which must be tended; spirituality cannot flourish without being nourished by knowledge and practice. Prayer helps to strengthen a person’s natural spirituality. However, the capacity for prayer also needs to be cultivated and developed. This can be done only through constant practice. Prayer is most effective if one makes it cumulative and inclusive,

s

s

hence The Prayer Project and its 3 x 3 methodology.

As a person grows in spirituality and approaches realization of the true self, the greater level of enlightenment will teach him or her that to be truly illuminated, one must serve God in all manifestations, including the earth, environment, plants, animals, and the humankind. In the words of Gandhi, “When a man loses himself in God, he immediately finds himself in the service of all that lives. It becomes his delight and his recreation.”

To be in union with God is to be in harmony with the universe. Achieving that union is a lifelong journey done through prayer.

No matter how you pray, use your prayers to heal our planet. Put our healing voices together in a chorus which calls for a peaceful, compassionate, and ecologically balanced future! Please join The Prayer Project (www.ProjectProject.com) where each of us prays for only three minutes a day times a day (3x3).

Dwarf

Planets Lead to Straight Roads

I

n the last months, important discoveries have been made that further our understanding of the Great Year – at least for those who are looking. It is our hope by calling attention to this research, more people will become aware the ancient teachings of the Yugas, cycles of time which affect our earth and human history, are supported by emerging scientific facts.

Restructuring the Solar System

One recent discovery of interest is 2012VP113, nicknamed Biden, a dwarf planet about 450 km in diameter found to be orbiting our sun in a pattern quite similar to Sedna, a dwarf discovered in 2002. Mike Brown, an astrophysicist at Caltech, famed for killing Pluto by his discovery of so many minor planets, was the first to note Sedna cannot exist in its current position without the gravitational help of some other unknown body. The discovery of Biden only underlines this point and heightens the quest for a large mass affecting our solar system. How big? Two Spanish astronomers, Carlos and Raul de la Fuente Marcos, at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain, have examined these distant bodies and noticed some unusual patterns. They concluded because Biden and Sedna are not large enough to exert much influence on each other, they must be kept in their place by two large undiscovered planets with each having a mass of at least ten times that of the earth.

By Walter Cruttenden These mega planets are required to be at least 200 to 250 AU away from the sun. For numerous reasons, the Binary Research Institute has long hypothesized there must be another large mass, presumably a companion star, which affects our solar system. Such a mass is required not only to explain the bending of the dwarf planets away from the plane of the major planets (which are more directly affected by the sun), but also as a way to explain the changing orientation of the entire solar system by about 50” per year, a.k.a. precession. The orbits of these dwarfs are then completely expected. While the Spanish astronomers are not saying the mass affecting our solar system is a companion star to the sun, the mass and distance of their hypothetical planets, are moving us in that direction. Year by year mainstream astronomy is getting closer to the idea there must be something big out there. However, it is not just the position of these orbits that is so interesting. The most confirming fact from a Great Year perspective is that the orbital periods of these new dwarf planets are in resonance with known Great Year periodicities. For example, Sedna orbits the sun in 12,000 years, once per Yuga or twice per Yuga cycle, while Biden’s orbit is in a 3:1 ratio to Sedna, meaning it orbits the sun six times per Yuga, and 12 times in a complete Yuga cycle. For those who study planetary resonances and understand the Great Year cycle, this is uncanny information!

Connections

the Carnegie Institution for Science, and one of the discoverers of Biden, said, “As there are only a few of these extremely distant objects known, it’s hard to say anything definitive about the number or location of any distant planets; however, in the near future we should have more objects to work with to help us determine the structure of the outer solar system.

If it is realized our solar system is being influenced by a large mass, such as a companion star, then we have the necessary ingredients for a vast cycle of time. Just %\ 'RQ 0DUU as the celestial driven cycles of day and night, every 24 hours, and of the seasons, every year, cause an ebb and flow that affects all life, so, too, would there finally be a known celestial cause for the mythical Great Year.

From the point of view of this Yuga observer, that structure will eventually be found to contain a mass equivalent to a companion star.

Just Be You s

... Everyone Else is Taken By Harold Burt

O

ur culture and modern science has taught us to not value things that cannot be explained. It is amazing some of the world’s most respected scientists seem to revel in and gleefully embrace the concept of “Junk DNA,” the 95% of our DNA they can’t explain what its function is. So they label it as “junk” and openly state in white papers and interviews it is useless. How absurd is that? I also have been just as astonished to see how people disregard and devalue what they consider to be small, insignificant things about themselves, such as dozens of seemingly unimportant things which collectively make us incredible and significant parts of our universe. As a hiring corporate manager, I have a unique opportunity to see first-hand how people value themselves, or in most cases, don’t. I’ve been a corporate guy most of my life. I have been in sales management and directed sales teams for some of the world’s largest scientific and medical companies. Corporate life can sometimes be structured and rigid, but fun and magic happens there, too. I have witnessed remarkable achievements by “ordinary” people.

From Another Dimension

I saw good performances, great performances, spectacular performances, and some so phenomenal they defied description. It was as if they came from another dimension. The first time I saw this was early 16

in my career. I decided it was a fluke and would never see again. I was wrong.

The next time I saw it, I saw it up close and personal because some of these magical people worked for me. I wish I could tell you I taught them how to be spectacular, but I didn’t. All I did was watch and discover how they

Brainalignment™ in Spiritual-driven Entrepreneurs By Sylvia Becker-Hill

A

re you a healer, artist, health practitioner, therapist, energy worker, life-coach, or … a heart- and value-centered spiritual-driven entrepreneur? Do you create enough income easily with what you do to have your dream life style as well as nurture your family and good causes at heart? If yes, this article is not for you. If you struggle to make a living doing what you love, you have to read this article.

These two identities are not only separated from each other in the sub-consciousness of the spiritual-driven, financiallystruggling entrepreneur, the spiritual one is judging the other one as non-spiritual, too materialistic, and ego-driven. Therefore, the business side in us (I was there, too, for the first 18

Radiance September/October 2014

Many spiritualdriven entrepreneurs are stuck – without knowing – in a painful identity split:

12 years of my business without knowing it!) gets neglected, denied, and not nurtured by proper training attention and support. The result looks like this:

TRUTH s CONSCIOUSNESS s BLISS As long as the “spiritual-making a difference” side AND the “business growing money-making” side are not aligned and peacefully supporting each other in us, we, as spiritual-driven entrepreneurs, keep struggling financially resulting in long term burn out. We end up not making the difference we feel called to make. When your business is dying …your mission is dying as well! From where is this coming and how can you solve this?

Our human brain is an amazing organ and, unfortunately, gets neglected by most people. They brush their teeth twice daily and wash their hair several times a week, but do you “brain wash” your brain regularly?

success with your business, you have to understand the relationship between your conscious and subconscious mind.

Below is an image which shows the main difference between the talents of the conscious and the sub-conscious mind. The sizerelationship between the invisible iceberg parts under and above the water line expresses the invisible dominance of the sub-conscious mind in a powerful way.

business-mastermind groups implementing nothing, feeling stupid, being angry with yourself, or trying to implement just a little with poor results doubting yourself, blaming the economy, and judging or envying the big 7-figures guys in your industry as superficial and manipulative in their marketing. Without Brainalignment™ – which means your conscious AND subconscious mind pulling you into the same direction - you suffer the Titanic-Effect™. Like the seemingly unsinkable Titanic met her Master in the shape of a hidden piece of iceberg under the waterline, your sub-conscious mind pulls you and your business down.

When you consciously set goals for building your mission-driven business, your sub-conscious mind needs to support them.

Our brain is an amazing associationmaking machine. Throughout our life, it gets imprinted with every thought, every feeling, and every experience we ever had. Most get stored for hard-wiring efficiency reasons into our sub-conscious mind and resist immediate linear access through intellectual analyses. To understand how your brain determines your level of

If you don’t, you’ll drive your “car of change” with one foot on the gas and one on the brake. How far do you think you’ll go and how safe will you be? Consciously you might think, “I want to reach more people and make a bigger difference in the world while enjoying a rewarding lifestyle.” However, unconsciously, you might think, “I don’t want to become a sales-y marketer like a second hand car dealer. What if I really become wealthy, turn into a greedy monster, and lose my spiritual path?” Guess what? You’ll end up spending a ton of money on sales and marketing trainings and

The frustrating news for us is the sub-conscious mind always wins over the conscious mind in the end. Conscious willpower is a depleting resource which runs low quickly in times of stress, physical arousal, mental anxiety, lack of sleep, decision-making-fatigue, lack of water, and good nutrition. In cases of strong disagreement between your conscious and sub-conscious minds, you create an inner conflict which not only destroys your business-building attempts, but continued on page 20 >>

<< continued from page 19 also your love and passion for your healing art, product, or helping others services, including your trust and confidence in yourself (in the worst cases, can even make you sick!). Your body becomes a warzone and starts to show symptoms which may later be diagnosed as diseases by your doctor.) The image below shows the symptoms of a Lack of Brainalignment as the Titanic Effect on business owners:

To make sustainable business building possible and accelerate the implementation process of your learning, your conscious and sub-conscious mind must work together. You need to brain wash yourself regularly to create Brainalignment™! The emotional/thought-content of your sub-conscious mind which needs to be cleaned can be sorted in 12 categories which all have an impact on how willingly and successful you are in the 4 Pillars of Business Building™: 1.

Growing a business

4.

Focusing on the sale.

2. 3.

Relating to money

Doing your marketing

Following are the most common 20

Radiance September/October 2014

reasons for lack of Brainalignment for each of the four pillars: Pillar 1: Growing a Business – Material Capitalism at its best

Most heart-centered spiritual entrepreneurs create a lack of Brainalignment by identifying themselves with their business in the pillar of business. Their e.g. healing practice is “living their calling” which they understand proudly as their self-expression. This is a dangerous paradigm because you are too attached to the business. Your business and you are literally “one.” In order to be able to think strategically, make sound decisions, take nothing personal, live a healthy lifestyle by paying yourself a salary, you need to see your business as an identity separate from yourself. Additionally, these practitioners/ healers, etc. have a self-image of being an “artist,” “spiritual,” and yes, they want to be great, too, but resist being “business owners” caused by believing they can’t be both or the latter will turn them into someone they don’t want to be. Brainalignment means wanting to be a great practitioner AND a great business owner, too. Combine this wrong identification with the deeply-rooted aversion against anything “business-y” which comes from the negative paradigms that business is something evil and dangerous turning any good spiritual person into a manipulative crook and it’s easy to see why most spiritual entrepreneurs don’t invest much attention into building a business and learning how to be a great business owner.

s

s

Pillar 2: Relating to Money – Emotional Hell of Shame, Guilt and Fear The more heart- and valuecentered a business owner is the more they are sub-consciously stuck in an unhealthy relationship with money. For most people, there is so much unhealed links to shame, guilt, and fears conditioned in their early childhood, it is best to avoid money all together. BUT: You can’t make money and a profit for your business and generate the resources to reach more people and live your mission in a big way with a dream lifestyle without creating a positive relationship with money. You need to wholeheartedly embrace money as something as spiritual … see it as an expression of spirit in order for you to learn how to make it, manage it, save it, invest it, AND enjoy it. Pillar 3: Marketing – Manipulative Money-draining Exhibitionism

Most spiritual practitioners see marketing (and sales) as something different from their “real calling.” For them, it’s an undesired necessity they have to do, but don’t want to do. They misunderstand good client-focused marketing is, in its essence, ALREADY PART of the WHOLE SERVICE PROCESS! Through marketing, a practitioner provides valuable information to prospects so they can relate and see themselves in the offered material which helps them understand where they are and what they need to do next to move towards their dreams and goals. It opens the door for prospects to believe in their possibilities and move towards a continued on page 25 >>

commitment to change – keys of the essence of “healing services” itself!

Combine this marketing aversion with shame-triggering, visibilitybeliefs like, “I’m not good enough,” and fears around approval like, “What if I make a fool of myself in my videos?” It’s easy to understand why many spiritual practitioners prefer getting a root-canal than constantly marketing themselves through speaking, networking, social media and video-blogging. Pillar 4: Sales – The Trade of the Nasty, Greedy, Sleazy Used Car Dealers

At a networking event, have you ever met a sincere, passionate practitioner, artist, or life coach talking about their practice and asked him/her what he/she charges? In most cases, you will see a scary transformation in seconds in front of your eyes. Your confident passionate communication partner turns into a stuttering, tight, inauthentic, bubbling, unclear, information weirdo. Why is that?

It’s due to the lack of Brainalignment caused by dozens of thoughts rushing through the person’s brain: “What if my service is not worth that much?” “What if he/she can’t afford it?” “What if she/he judges me as ridiculously overprized?”

These negative beliefs, assumptions, and fears circling around the service/art/product, the prospect and the practitioner needs to be cleaned up and rewired in the spiritual entrepreneur’s

sub-conscious mind to make sales a joyful, powerful client-serving conversation.

As it is with marketing, as long sales is seen as NOT PART of the service process already, it stays an unnecessary evil. To discover that a good sales-conversation is a serviceproviding conversation helping prospects connect with their goals and the pain of the gap not being there already, showing them what’s possible and supporting them to make clear decisions of either “No, that’s not the right thing for me” or “Yes, I want that” is pure service and powerfully lived spirituality.

Your level of Brainalignment in all 4 pillars of brain-based business building determines how much you commit to your goals and dreams, how much you implement what you learn from mentors, and how much success you will experience. Your brain is your business.

A final Brainalignment assessment for yourself using scaling questions:

Before answering the questions, please close your eyes, breathe deeply, and guide your attention fully into the different pillars of building your spiritual business and ask: “On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 meaning, “I feel so much resistance towards that area I simply don’t do it and give it no attention at all,” and 10 meaning, “I love this pillar. I give it full attention, feeling free and empowered. I can’t wait to act upon it.” Where are you in each area?

Cancer

By Brenda Michaels and Marsha Mercant

W

hen people hear about my experience with cancer, they congratulate me on “beating the odds.” While I know their comments are heartfelt, the concept has never felt right to me. It sounds like I fought my cancer and beat it! When in fact, the opposite is true.

In the beginning of the journey through my 14-year illness, I tried to “beat the odds.” I did what doctors told me: I put on a “brave face” and focused my faith on modern medicine to “cure” me. When the cancer resurfaced for a third time, I was told that without chemotherapy, I had a year to live. I thought using the model “beat the odds” might not be working. My then-husband went to see a psychic. Without knowing my condition, the psychic told him what I was doing for my health was not going to produce the desired results. That observation shook me to the bone! I wanted to deny what he said. The problem was, deep inside I knew he was right. I was at a major crossroad which demanded drastic changes. If only I’d had a clue what they might be. I did the only thing I could think of doing; I prayed for help in answering the questions obsessing my mind. I prayed for assistance in finding peace and guidance to restore my health. I embarked on a committed regime of daily meditation. This was not easy as I, in crisis, have an active brain. 26

Radiance September/Octobert 2014

I discovered both prayer and meditation require deep surrender to a higher power and unquestionable trust the answers to my problems would be revealed. It took time, patience, and a commitment to maintain a state of surrender every day, no matter what the challenges. And the challenges were many! One day while meditating, I received a message from a voice inside I had never heard before. A message so powerful, I knew if I could find the courage to trust it, it would change my life. Oftentimes what looks like courage is really the “soul’s knowing” the only choice is surrender. It wasn’t courage I felt; it was the feeling I had nowhere else to go. I was willing because deep inside I knew my spirit was in charge; it knew what I needed to do to save my life. Was I afraid? Absolutely! Was my mind constantly questioning the process? You bet! But something within drove me; it beckoned me to breathe into the fear until it lessened its hold. I had to remember the truth: my choice was to change or die. One day as I settled into meditation, I was presented with a beautiful, white box tied with a lush, blue velvet ribbon. Excited to see what magnificent gift was inside, I opened the box. Instead of a wonderful treasure, the word CANCER in bold black letters jumped out. Frightened and in shock, I was jolted out

TRUTH s CONSCIOUSNESS s BLISS

of my meditation. I shook involuntarily. My mind wove stories to make sense of what happened. With my mind back in full control, it conjured up several negative scenarios. After a couple weeks of sweating through every dark and evil possibility my mind could invent, I told my husband about the experience. Expecting his comfort and support, I was taken aback when instead he suggested I might be viewing the experience from the wrong perspective. He said the only way I would know was to go back into meditation and ask for more information. This was not my first choice. I was scared. The last thing I wanted was to see some warped image of what felt like the universe mocking me. However, deep within, I knew he was right. I quieted my mind through focused breathing and found myself back in the same peaceful setting. Allowing this peace to enfold me, I timidly asked for the meaning of the image I had seen. The voice said the cancer was a gift; it had manifested to teach me about myself. Did I hear that right? A gift? I waited a moment to see if there was more. I remained still, unafraid and focused, then notice I was filled with peace and, for the first time in years, felt hopeful. It took time to digest what this experience meant. Ultimately, I came to understand instead of cancer being an enemy to fight and destroy, it had come to teach me about myself. This powerful message gave me a new perspective to consider. How I held what I was going through would make all the difference in how I approached my healing. My health depended on healing the wounded, limited, terrified parts of me which had allowed cancer to manifest in the first place.

to get us; this is not the truth. It is the work of the ego which is in control when we give it control. When we make peace with our lives, we open the door to unlimited possibility. We create the space for amazing miracles, empowered healing, and untold growth. We make it possible to expand our awareness and raise the vibrations of our consciousness to love deeply. Fighting our circumstances gives power to that which we fight. At our core, we are peace; we are lovers, not fighters. We have simply forgotten this truth. Once we remember this, once we re-connect with the love we are, we realize love is the only energy which can heal. It is the only force which can transform us from frightened, angry people into healthy, loving beings fully conscious of the choice to live here, in heaven on earth.

Please understand, I was not blaming myself for being sick. There is no blame, only experience. We call forth our experience for reasons beyond our comprehension because they are made at the level of the Soul. They are born of love. This can be difficult to accept when the mind wants to convince us someone or something is out to “get us.” The mind loves to place blame. It will find excuses for our circumstances rooted in how the world is out September/October 2014 Radiance

A Message from Rev. Basia Christ, Executive Director of the Temple of Light

The Truth Those of us who are associated with the Temple of Light are Seekers - of wisdom, spirituality, enlightenment, and Truth. I want to share my first month’s experience as the Temple’s Executive Director with you.

The Good

I’ve been the editor of Radiance for two years and was thrilled (and continue to be) when Danielle asked me to take this position. I’ve met wonderful people who are passionate about being of service. Their light and spirit add to the Temple’s light. They are beautiful Be-ings. We appreciate what they bring helps grow this community of light. They are givers.

The Bad Recently Danielle shared the Temple was in trouble. She has ever taken a salary... all the classes, sessions, and mentorship programs

for which she collects money goes into paying rent and utilities. She quietly has covered many bills of the Temple out of her and her husband’s pocket and never said a word to any of you. She only shared this because she was thinking about closing the Temple in December if things did not turn around. We put together a Supporting Membership Program with benefits (see below) which far outweigh what someone would pay monthly for classses, workshops, vendor tables, etc. - so people would feel good about pledging. Some people attend regularly for classes, etc. and pay nothing. They are takers (harsh, but true).

The Ugly

I’ve heard negative comments, such as, “The Temple only wants our money,” and “Danielle is out of integrity.” Perception is reality and to those who have said or thought this, please allow me to offer a paradigm shift. The Temple is a non-profit, but we’re not making enough money to cover our bills. Currently, we are two months’ in arrears on the rent and the landlords have been patient, but concerned about the Temple’s future.

We understand

For those who are really in dire straits and cannot afford to donate money, there is no need to feel as if you cannot contribute. I have a solution. We have several tasks with which you can help around the Temple. We will be happy to trade time for a membership and acknowledge you as a Supporting Member in the same manner as if you donated cash.

We ARE a CommUNITY

I remember President John Kennedy’s words, “Ask not what the country can do for you; ask what you can do for the country.” Every donated dollar and hour will count towards keeping the Temple’s Light shining. We need each of you to become a Supporting Member today (and yes, I am a member).

10+ 1 Powerful Reasons to Become a Supporting Member

1. Receive a FREE 15-minute reading or healing session at EVERY monthly Holistic Healing Fair 2. Receive an income tax deduction 3. Medicine Bag: Tools for Awakening Consciousness

By Lee McCormick & Mary Falkner

T

he following exercises from Spirit Recovery Medicine Bag, are highly transformational. By following them, you will awaken aspects of yourself you have possibly been out of touch with for a long time. Work slowly and repeat the exercises as needed.

Writing your answers in your journal makes them more powerful. Sharing them with someone makes them more powerful. While transformation is personal, it happens best when we work together. Keep your list handy, as you will be referring back to it during these exercises.

Your journey in consciousness begins by exploring your hopes and dreams. This is the first step in claiming your truth. To explore them, consider these questions:

Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted for about an hour. Get comfortable, relax, and allow yourself to get in touch with your deep hopes and dreams. Begin with the question we often ask kids, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Exercise 1: Exploring Your Hopes and Dreams

• For what do I long? • How does it feel?

• What about life hooks my imagination? • How does that feel?

• What would I do if I weren’t afraid? • How would fearlessness feel? 30

Radiance September/October 2014

Exercise 2: Dreaming the New Dream

If you have trouble finding an answer, take more time or put it on the back burner. There is no need to rush to find answers. Your brain is wired for curiosity and creativityit likes wondering, and it will find

your answer. You don’t have to know before you know.

Next, change the focus from your career goals to the type of person you want to be. What qualities or characteristics do you want to embody? For example, transformation encourages us to live from the heart, cultivate a positive mind, be of service, and live honestly. What values or characteristics would this require? For example, it might require creativity, bravery, humor, cooperation, or peace. In your journal, make a list and don’t worry about how you can develop these qualities. They are on the human hard drive; you just have to download them and live them. From the items on your list, pick the top three, the ones you most want to have. Select one and imagine how it feels to have this quality. Experience this quality emotionally. Breathe it in fully. Keep imagining

TRUTH s CONSCIOUSNESS s BLISS your life with this quality until you can feel it physically. Notice where in your body the feeling resonates. Toxic beliefs that cloud your new vision begin to come to mind, giving you the opportunity to choose to invest in them further or let them go. Some will dissolve; others may require deeper investigation. This is you transforming into you.

Exercise 3: Transforming Blocks

Taking the top quality you identified in the second part of Exercise 2, close your eyes, and breathe down into your belly. Speaking to your “wise” mind (the intuitive part of you), ask what gets in the way of fully living the quality you have chosen to embody. For example, if you chose the quality “creativity,” ask, “What is blocking me from experiencing my creativity?” Sit quietly with that question while your deep memory searches the files. Did someone say you weren’t creative (or beautiful or handsome or wonderful . . . )? Did you believe it? Do you need to believe it now?

There may be more than one message or belief involved, but you don’t have to locate every single thing that’s part of the block. Often one or two toxic messages will unlock the whole mess. This process is natural; allow it to happen rather than putting demands on yourself.

Exercise 4: Dreaming the Real You

Anything less than loving yourself indicates you are living a nightmare, not dreaming an awakened dream. This exercise will help you get out of the bad dream and into the

one written on your heart by your creator. Talk, write, and/or draw pictures about your transformed life and your ideal self until you feel the feelings of it and it begins to feel like it’s yours.

Notice where in your body you feel these emotions, and breathe into those areas, grounding them in your body, giving them life. Practice consciously breathing into the feelings or the sense of your ideal self for several minutes each night as you are going to sleep and again when you awaken.

At those times and at intervals throughout the day, the brain naturally slows down into what are called “alpha” brainwaves, a highly creative and healing state of mind. During those intervals, energizing your dream is most effective.

As you imagine your ideal self and your transformed life, notice what blocks you from fully entering this new dream. Notice where your mind wants to take you. For example, you might find it saying things like, “Wake up and get real; you’re just daydreaming,” “Life isn’t like that,” and “Yeah, right . . .”

Write these blocks, create a drawing or another piece of art which represent them. Often, there may be additional subconscious beliefs holding you back, such as, “I don’t deserve . . .,” “I can’t do . . .,” “I’m just crazy; “It’s useless . . .,” “If I change, it will mean I was wrong all these years . . .,” and so on. When you have identified the blocks and are ready to give them up, create a ceremony in which symbolize letting them go and

allowing them to transform. Fire and water are traditional symbols of transformation.

Letting go of beliefs we have carried throughout life can be challenging, but it is possible. It’s not unusual to repeat and repeat and repeat your efforts, each time reaching deeper into yourself. You are clearing patterns that have come down through your genetics for generations. It’s like peeling the onion, one layer uncovers another and another and another. In cases of childhood trauma, the patterns are stored deep in the limbic system, and, in addition to your sincere intention and steadfast attention, healing them may require therapeutic assistance. The limbic system can be updated. You can heal. Don’t give up before the miracle. Get more help if you need it. Lee McCormick and Mary Faulkner are the coauthors of Spirit Recovery Medicine Bag; A Transformational Guide for Living, Happy, Joyous and Free (HCI Books), an essential, life-changing resource which is half autobiographical journey and half medicine bag filled with spiritual healing practices for those who are struggling with any aspect of life. The book draws on Native American and shamanistic traditions, Eastern practices, universal spiritual pathways, and a medicine bag of other heart-opening methodologies developed by these two seasoned experts. mbodying Our True Soul Through the Sacred Feminine By Jane Villar-Gehr

T

he concept of Soul is age-old, and yet we stumble into our words every time we attempt to define it. Most of us have an idea of Soul, or an impression of it, which can be more accessible through our feelings. It is that part of us which cannot be defined, limited, or contained. It does not care for conventions, rules, or what anyone thinks. It is the fire-spitting dragon of our creative force, burning the dross out of that which may stand in the way of our authentic expression, our heart’s longing, and purpose. For that, it is imperative we experience a certain degree of creative inner freedom, because access to the Soul is only possible to those ready and willing to challenge, question, and confront the small self. The small self is the conditioned part of us who tends to operate initially through “auto-pilot,” or the ego.

As we learn from birth to speak “osmotically,” we also learn to “behave” in that way, through the absorption of subliminal environmental, cultural, familial, historical, and religious laws of conduct, which gets enforced, taught, or observed throughout our growing years and become the norm.

Our historical and religious legacy in the last 5-6,000 years has been one which systematically and diligently 32

Radiance September/Octobert 2014

advocated for our “masculine” to such an extreme that today our society is lost, confused, and feeling separate and disconnected, partly due to the associations of “feminine” qualities, such as softness, loving, caring, compassion, nurturing, and non-violence. These are not desirable qualities to cultivate in this “masculine” world. Men and women are feeling the cost of those past choices and even more intensely in the realm of relationships, where there’s been little training or encouragement in either side of the whole, to exercise our heart centers more fully and experience our feelings with unrestricted flow, confidence, trust and honor. As a result, women have been singularly affected. The shutting down of our individual feminine souls has affected the universal feminine as well, which in wholeness inhabits woman AND man. The last 100-150 years of hard-earned evolutionary social progress has given us permission to question and reframe old belief systems. This unique opening has and continues to have a profound effect in our freedom of being that women can feel and experience.

As a result, right to education, freedom of speech, and

TRUTH s CONSCIOUSNESS s BLISS

action has given the feminine soul new-found space to flourish which had been suppressed, repressed, and relegated to subconscious existence in us. It has been the culprit of many psychological diagnoses, such as neurosis.

We have come a long way. We can look back and rise from the ashes of our “child-like” ways and take altitude for the amplitude of understanding which allowed us to experience the deceit and limitations of a world crying for wholeness. The unhindered flow of our nature, instilled with the presence of a heart-centered loving attitude, is the inherent deep-felt, whole-human destiny, and great aspiration when our feminine soul is allowed expression. The feminine soul is best understood through a threefold manifestation: an endless fountain of life giving force, the embodiment of all which is integral, loving, authentic, giving, harmonious, balanced, and in service to the whole. This part of us which cares, seeks harmony, equality, and loves to love and be loved, is being given permission to be felt, experienced, and cultivated.

are not alone, even when you think you are. It invites you to allow it to co-create with you for a more joyfilled easy, graceful experience. It asks you to radically let go of what you thought was right, wrong, easy, and hard and simply receive the bounty being offered, if you have the openness to see the possibility. It insists you must acknowledge your feelings and honor them. It wants you to know you can rename the ones you judge most if it is easier for you to hang with them. In other words, drop that view and take a better one. In my case, anger turned into fierce love! Our feminine soul asks we do not keep the riches to ourselves and share our time and fortune with those struggling to find theirs. The feminine soul is the selfless source of infinite abundance. It demands you share of your bounty, in form, time, and/or wisdom.

As you connect with your feminine soul, the serendipities and gifts will “fall from heaven,” and you will have an interesting time “unwrapping!” The continued on page 34 >>

It is that place in us hungry to feel all deeply and live life more fully. The heart is the language of the feminine soul. We are being called to speak it freely and fearlessly for the treasures that lay ahead only to be revealed to the bold and the brave. The uncensored, innocent heart, which judges less and allows the human spirit the right to learn by trial and error without any need for labeling, is at its core.

The feminine soul also equally demands we honor and understand the importance, immeasurable value, and beauty of our humanness. The old guilt-shame paradigm is giving place to compassionate self-forgiveness and unconditional self-love. Our mold-fitting-perfectionistself-critic is being asked to leave the stage and allow our brilliant uniqueness and originality take center and shine its light. It asks us to break the molds and dare to follow our inner guidance and divinity. It reminds us we have been empowered by creation to exercise our sacred sovereignty. Our feminine soul urges us to trust our gut and tells us to dance when everyone else is meditating or stop when the rest of the world is on-the-go. It asks you to hold that embrace longer, to believe in magic, miracles, and momentous manifestations. It tells you know you

Embracing My Shadow

By Rev. Basia Christ, PhD

I

don’t know about you, but I’ll admit it. I have done things for which I’m ashamed, feel guilty, and hope NO ONE ever learns. This is normal. We are, after all, human beings with egos. We feel shame, guilt, hate, greed, lust, laziness, wrath, envy, gluttony, and pride. Yes, the Big Seven (Deadly Sins).

As humans, we try to deny these sins or feelings we have. Sometimes they have such a powerful hold on us we cave under the weight of their mass – we find ourselves unable to stop the desire to do something we know we will regret later. We tell ourselves, “Shhhh. It’s ok. No one is looking. No one will ever know.”

It took a few months, but finally my grandmother asked if I took it. Of course, I denied it (looking back we didn’t have much company; it was my grandparents and I living there, but I thought I could get away with it).

She owned a small quad (four apartments to a building). Our apartment was on the second floor. A family from Mexico moved into one on the third floor. I used to baby sit the children, Marta and Tony (about 6- and 8-yearsold respectively if I remember correctly), while their continued on page 38 >>

Sometimes we get away with “it.” At least we think we do, but those of us who have a conscience and are not sociopaths, know we are fooling ourselves. We know. The Universe knows. We can’t hide from “it.” I grew up like most kids, thinking I can get away with stealing from my grandmother (or parent, sibling, friend, etc.). And I did. It started when I was about 12 (in 1958) and lived with my grandparents full time. I found her purse with lots of $1 and $5 bills stuffed in it hidden in the pantry behind cans of food. I thought I found the “Mother Lode.” (I found out much later it was her Lodge’s membership dues. She was its Secretary.)

I took a couple of dollars and bought candy. I waited to see if I’d get caught. Yahoo. I didn’t. I got braver and took more money. Soon I was taking the money every day and treating my friends to ice cream and comic books. I was “the big shot with lots of dough to throw around.” To this day, I do not know how much I stole.
