Carlik Jones’ Player of the Year honor wasn’t the only bright spot in the 201920 season, as the squad’s 21-11 record carried them to their second straight regular season conference title. The 20-win season gave Jones’ and company its third straight 20-win season – the most consecutive 20-win seasons in program history. The season featured wins over Northwestern, Richmond and James Madison and saw Jones reach his 150th win as a head coach. He was later named a Hugh Durham and Ben Jobe Award finalist by CollegeInsider.com and donned his second Big South Coach of the Year honor. The 2018-19 season was full of milestones for Jones and the Highlanders. The team went 22-11 and 12-4 in conference play, earning a share of the Big South regular season title for the first time since 2008-09. Radford went on the road and knocked off Notre Dame and No. 17 Texas, which was the first victory over a ranked opponent in Radford history. Radford began its conference slate a perfect 7-0 to become one of the final 15 teams in the nation still undefeated. The Highlanders remained atop the standings for nearly the entire season and as the No. 2 seed in the Big South Tournament, reached the title game for the second consecutive season. Five of the 11 20-plus win seasons in program history have now come under Jones. For his success on the court and his high moral standing off of it, he was also named a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year award following the 2018-19 season. 2017-18 was arguably Jones’ most successful season to date, the season in which he was named Big South Coach of the Year and NABC District 3 Coach of the Year honors after leading the Highlanders to a Big South championship and playing in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. Taking Coach Jones’ lead, Radford set a Division I school record with 23 wins, completing the season at 23-13. The Highlanders earned victories over notable opponents such as East Carolina and James Madison during the non-conference schedule before compiling a 12-6 Big South record to finish the regular season in second place. He also became the third head coach in Radford history to reach 100 wins on Dec. 23, 2017 when the Highlanders topped UC Davis to clinch the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic title. The team’s postseason run was one to remember. Thanks in part to Jones preaching toughness and hard work throughout his tenure, the Highlanders overcame several obstacles in the Big South Championships to top No. 10 Longwood, No. 3 Winthrop and No. 5 Liberty to take home the program’s third ever conference title. The entire championship run culminated with “The Shot”, as redshirt freshman Carlik Jones’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer lifted Radford over in-state rival Liberty, 55-52, in front of a sellout crowd at the Dedmon Center.

2020-21 RADFORD MEN’S BASKETBALL

Jones and the Highlanders earned a No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament and were selected to play in the First Four in Dayton, Ohio. It was there on March 13, 2018 that Radford won its first ever NCAA Tournament victory – a 71-61 win over LIU Brooklyn. The magical season came to an end with a tough loss to No. 1 overall seed Villanova who went on to win the National Championship. The entire experience was an incredible opportunity for Radford University, including students, alumni, faculty, staff and fans, to come together to support a common cause. The seventh head coach in program history, Jones took over a program with just one win in the season prior to his arrival on campus and led a three-year turnaround that resulted in back-to-back 22-win seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15. Radford competed in postseason play those three seasons as well, with the Highlanders taking home the program’s first and second postseason victories over Oregon State and Delaware State in the College Basketball Invitational before the 2017-18 NCAA Tournament run. During his tenure, the Highlanders have defeated opponents such as Northwestern, Texas, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Virginia Tech and Penn State. The success of the program has led to an increase in exposure all over the country with the team appearing on national and regional television countless times. Radford’s success can be attributed to the foundation laid in Jones’ first season in the red and white with Big South All-Freshman selections Javonte Green and R.J. Price. Green, who was Jones’ first All-Big South performer, and Price spearheaded the Highlanders’ resurgence to the top of the league.

Under Jones’ tutelage, Green developed into one of the all-time greats in Radford men’s basketball history. The Petersburg, Va., native finished his career second in scoring, first in rebounding, first in steals, second in free throws made, second in field goals made and first in games played. He became the Highlanders’ first NBA player when the Boston Celtics signed him for the 2019-20 season. Price left RU ranked fourth all-time in scoring. The duo represents two of 12 Highlanders to turn pro following their career in Radford. Rashun Davis, Brandon Holcomb, Randy Phillips, Ed Polite Jr., and Travis Fields Jr., have all gone from learning under Jones to extending their basketball careers into the professional realm. The 2016-17 season saw the Highlanders reach the Big South Championship semifinals for the first time since 2010. Ed Polite Jr., led the Big South in rebounding and double-doubles (14). He also led Radford in scoring and steals, and ranked second on the team in blocks and third in assists. The 6-5 forward averaged 9.5 rebounds per game to rank 31st in the NCAA, while becoming the first sophomore in program history to reach the 500 career rebound-mark and the second to do so in two seasons of play.

on the staff, the highest total over any two-year span in program history. Prior to his second coaching stop in Virginia at VCU, Jones served a six-year stint on Dennis Felton’s bench at Georgia from 200309. In 2008, Georgia advanced to the NCAA Tournament when the sixth-seeded Bulldogs won four games in three days to complete the most improbable SEC Championship run in conference history, which included a tornado striking the Georgia Dome and the tournament being moved to the Georgia Tech campus. While at Georgia, Jones made a name for himself when Rivals.com selected him as one of the nation’s Top-25 recruiters in 2005. Jones also previously worked under John Beilein at Richmond from 2000-02 and during the early stages of Beilein’s rebuilding project at West Virginia in 2002-03. Jones’ father, Jimmy, was a star guard in the ABA from 1967-74. In 1974, Jimmy Jones signed with the Washington Bullets in the NBA, where he remained until 1977.

The Highlanders opened the 2015-16 campaign with a double-overtime victory at Georgetown and followed up just 10 days later with a road win at Penn State, the program’s first victory over a Big 10 opponent.

Jones was a four-year standout at Howard University, where he forged a connection with fellow Howard alumnus, Felton (’85), who he calls the biggest influence on his coaching career. Once Jones graduated with a degree in Zoology in 1990, he began his coaching career as a high school coach at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. before moving to the collegiate ranks at his alma mater in 1994.

Jones spent the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons at VCU, which included a magical run to the 2011 Final Four with wins over USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and Kansas. While on Shaka Smart’s staff, the Rams posted 55 wins over the final two seasons Jones was

He currently resides in the New River Valley with his wife, Dr. Sharon Blackwell Jones. The oldest of his two sons, Nate, was a member of the Bucknell men’s basketball team and his youngest son, Miles, is currently on the Radford men’s basketball team.

RON JIRSA • ASSISTANT COACH • SIXTH YEAR AT RADFORD • GETTYSBURG, ‘81 Ron Jirsa was appointed assistant men’s basketball coach in June 2015. Jirsa assists in post player development, recruiting, scheduling and academics for Radford. From one Big South regular season title to another, the squad’s 21-11 record during the 2019-20 season carried them to their second straight regular season conference title for the second time in program history. The season featured wins over Northwestern, Richmond and James Madison and a 15-3 conference record. The 20-win season gave Jirsa and company its third straight 20-win season – the most consecutive 20-win seasons in program history. The 2018-19 season saw the Highlanders go 22-11 overall and 12-4 in conference play to win a share of the Big South regular season title for the first time since 2008-09. The team reached the Big South Tournament championship game for the second consecutive season as well. He also played an integral role in Radford’s 2017-18 run to a Big South championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament that included the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament victory. A veteran of the coaching profession for over 30 years, Jirsa joined the Highlanders after one season at Tennessee Tech. He handled post player development and recruiting for the Golden Eagles. Jirsa has experience as both a head coach and assistant. Prior to Tennessee Tech, Jirsa was the recruiting coordinator for Bethel University in Arden Hills, Minn.

Memphis in the Conference USA Tournament Quarterfinals. Preceding his position at Marshall, Jirsa was the senior assistant coach at Dayton under then-head coach Oliver Purnell for four seasons. During his stint at UD, the Flyers posted an 88-39 overall record, made two NCAA Tournaments and two NIT appearances. In the 2002-03 campaign, Dayton posted a 24-6 record, won the Atlantic 10 Tournament championship, advanced to the NCAA Tournament as a four seed and finished the season ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation in the final Associated Press and USA Today polls. Jirsa has coached in 30 postseason games overall, 18 of those in the NCAA Tournament, and has appeared in postseason play 15 times. He owns a career record of 78-104 in six years as a head coach at Marshall and Georgia. His coaching career began at Connecticut College as an assistant coach following his graduation from Gettysburg College in 1981. Two years later, he moved on to Delaware and spent one season with the Blue Hens, before taking a graduate assistant position with VCU, which finished ranked 11th in the nation in 1984-85. Jirsa earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Gettysburg College in 1981 and a Master of Arts in athletic administration from Tulsa in 1987. He was a three-sport letterwinner at Ledyard High School in Ledyard, Conn. He and his wife, Laura, have one daughter, Hannah.

Before his position with the Royals, Jirsa spent six years as the associate head coach at Minnesota, serving under then-head coach Tubby Smith for the fourth time in his coaching career. Smith and Jirsa first began their working relationship at Virginia Commonwealth, where both served under coach J.D. Barnett during the 1984-85 season. The Rams finished 26-6 that season, winning the Sun Belt Conference title to advance to the NCAA Tournament. They reunited when Smith hired Jirsa as an assistant at Tulsa before the 1991-92 season. Three years later, Jirsa was named associate head coach of the Golden Hurricane. Jirsa accompanied Smith to Georgia when he took over the Bulldogs program in 1995. For two years, he served as associate head coach for Smith at Georgia before serving as head coach from 1997-99. His Bulldog squads posted a combined 35-30 record. During his time in Athens, the Bulldogs put together back-to-back recruiting classes that were rated among the top-five in the nation by several recruiting analysts. His teams also made two NIT appearances. In his first season, Georgia posted a 20-15 record, only the seventh 20-win season in program history, en route to a third-place finish in the NIT. Jirsa’s Bulldogs put together a 4-1 mark in the postseason with wins over Iowa, North Carolina State, Vanderbilt and Fresno State in March 1998. In his six combined seasons as an assistant at Tulsa and Georgia, Jirsa helped four consecutive teams win at least 21 games and reach the NCAA Tournament each year. The first three seasons - two at Tulsa and one at Georgia – he reached the Sweet 16. He also coached Jumaine Jones, who was a first-round NBA Draft pick of the Atlanta Hawks in 1999. Prior to his coaching stint at Minnesota, Jirsa spent four seasons as head coach at Marshall. The Thundering Herd went 13-19 in 2006-07, losing to

Boyden played one year at Fork Union Military Academy before moving on to Western Kentucky. He earned his Master’s Degree from WKU in 2011. Boyden and his wife, Lindsay, have two daughters, Eva and Nora.

The 2018-19 season saw the Highlanders go 22-11 overall and 12-4 in conference play to win a share of the Big South regular season title for the first time since 2008-09. The team reached the Big South Tournament championship game for the second consecutive season as well. He also played an integral role in Radford’s 2018 run to a Big South championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament that included the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament victory. Boyden came to the New River Valley with 10 years of prior Division I assistant coaching experience, including six seasons at his alma mater, Western Kentucky. A two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection and 1,000-point scorer for the Hilltoppers, Boyden was an assistant with the program for two stints (2008-10 and 2012-16), helping guide teams to five 20-win campaigns, two Sun Belt Conference championships and two NCAA Tournaments, including a first-round victory in 2009. With Boyden on the sidelines, Western Kentucky compiled a 124-78 overall record. In between that success, he spent the 2011-12 season at Tennessee Tech, working primarily with the post players of a Golden Eagles’ squad that posted a 19-14 mark. As a player, Boyden ranks third in WKU history with 123 career starts from 2000-03 while playing a key role for teams that won at least 24 games in each of his final three seasons and captured three consecutive Sun Belt East Division and conference tournament titles and NCAA Tournament berths. He earned All-Sun Belt honors as a junior, was a second-team selection as a senior and was named to the 2003 Sun Belt All-Tournament Team. The native of Richmond, Va., finished his career with 1,167 points, 650 rebounds and 130 assists. In his first two seasons, Boyden was also honored with the E.A. Diddle Award, given to the Hilltopper who best displays leadership, character, loyalty, ability and love of his fellow man. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from the school in 2003, Boyden spent two years working with Radford head coach Mike Jones on Dennis Felton’s staff at Georgia. He first served as an administrative assistant before taking over the role of director of basketball operations for the 2004-05 season. Boyden then garnered his first assistant coach position at Eastern Kentucky, helping the Colonels to the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference championship and NCAA Tournament during his three seasons. DONNY LIND • ASSISTANT COACH • FIFTH YEAR AT RADFORD • LOYOLA (MD.), ’10 Donny Lind is in his fifth season as an assistant coach after joining the Radford men’s basketball program in June 2016. From one Big South regular season title to another, the squad’s 21-11 record during the 2019-20 season carried them to their second straight regular season conference title for the second time in program history. The season featured wins over Northwestern, Richmond and James Madison and a 15-3 conference record. The 20-win season gave Lind and company its third straight 20-win season – the most consecutive 20-win seasons in program history. Lind’s hard work for the 2019-20 season didn’t go unnoticed as he was named a top 50 Impactful Low Major Coach in DI and the third best assistant coach in the Big South by Jeff Goodman, Stadium Basketball Insider. Lind has been known to be one of the most energetic coaches in the game and coaches with passion. One of those guards he has worked with went on to become the Highlanders’ first Big South Player of the Year in a 10-year span. Carlik Jones, one of the most prolific scorers in Radford and Big South history, went on to score the third-most points in a single-season in 201920 and ranks eighth in scoring at Radford. Winning has followed Lind throughout his coaching career and his tenure in Radford has been no different. The 2018-19 season saw the Highlanders go 22-11 overall and 12-4 in conference play to win a share of the Big South regular season title for the first time since 2008-09. The team reached the Big South Tournament championship game for the second consecutive season, as well. Under Lind’s direction, Radford’s offensive output jumped up to 73.9 points per game with a scoring margin of +5.8. The Highlanders ranked top-50 in the nation for fewest turnovers per game, assist-turnover ratio and three-point field goal percentage. Following the season, he was one of only 11 assistant coaches in the nation invited to participate in the inaugural Coaches Leadership Program at the Jay Bilas Skills Camp. During the 2017-2018 campaign, Lind played a vital role in Radford’s run to a Big South championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament that included the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament victory. Since joining the Highlanders, Lind has served as Radford’s

recruiting coordinator as well as assisting with on-floor coaching and scouting. He has taken the lead in the development of Radford’s perimeter players, notably 2018 Big South Rookie of the Year, Carlik Jones. Jones learned under Lind during his redshirt season before his breakout 2017-2018 campaign. Lind also oversees the Highlanders offense, which has shown marked improvement during his time with the team. Bringing an analytics background to the attack, the Highlanders focused on improving their offensive efficiency which rose from 8th in the Big South in 20162017 to 3rd in 2017-2018. Lind’s winning ways were on full display before his time in the New River Valley. Prior to arriving in Radford, Lind was an assistant at Mount St. Mary’s University where he worked for current George Washington head coach, Jamion Christian. In his first season with the Mountaineers, the team won the NEC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Lind served as The Mount’s recruiting coordinator, helping to recruit the winningest class in school history. In April 2016, Lind was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Under Armour 30-under-30 list as one of the top young assistant coaches in the nation. The 2017 Mount St. Mary’s graduating class was the first class to go to two NCAA Tournaments and had the second most wins in school history. This included senior, Junior Robinson, a Lind mentee, who finished his career as The Mount’s 3rd all-time leading scorer, the 2018 NEC Player of the Year, and a 2018 AP All-American.

during each of his three years in Emmitsburg, Md. The Mount Cup is rewarded to the athletic program that excels in academics, athletics and community service. Prior to Mount St. Mary’s, Lind spent three seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he worked under now Texas head coach, Shaka Smart. His tenure with the Rams started as a Graduate Manager while he finished his M.Ed in Sports Leadership at VCU’s prestigious Center for Sports Leadership. After one year with the program he was elevated to Video Coordinator. Lind provided insights through film, analytics, and organization. He assisted with post player development, on-campus recruiting, and oversaw the Rams’ community service efforts where he was rewarded with the Athletic Department Community Service Award in 2012. During his time in Richmond, Va., Lind was an integral piece in the Rams unprecedented success. They won a historic 84 games, a CAA Championship, and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in each of his three years. Prior to Lind’s time at VCU, the program had won one NCAA tournament game, but during Lind’s tenure, they won seven, including the legendary 2011 VCU team that advanced to the Final Four. Lind, a New Knoxville, Ohio native, graduated from Loyola University Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 2010, after serving as a student manager and video coordinator for the men’s basketball program under head coach Jimmy Patsos. Lind and his wife, Ciara, reside in Radford with their two children: Magnolia and Silas.

Much like in Radford, Lind oversaw the Mount St. Mary’s offense. During his three years, the Mountaineers led the NEC in scoring offense, free throw percentage, three-pointers made and tempo. The team was in the top 100 nationally in offensive efficiency, effective field goal percentage, scoring offense, three-pointers attempted, three-pointers made per game, and free throw percentage. Outside of basketball, Lind played a pivotal role in The Mount’s “Separation Seminar,” which was the team’s leadership seminar that focused on team building, goal setting, and community service. PROGRAM HISTORY 1974 Coached by Dr. Chuck Taylor, who was also the school’s first athletic director, the Highlanders won their final two games of the year to clinch a winning record in the school’s first year of competition. Wallace Foster averaged 22.4 ppg, setting a record for the highest scoring average that stood for 31 years.

1978 After four consecutive winning seasons, Dr. Chuck Taylor stepped aside as the basketball coach to assume full-time athletic director duties. Joe Davis was named as his replacement.

1979 Joe Davis finished his first season on the Highlander bench with a record of 23-4, including a school record 19-game winning streak. Included on that team was current North Carolina assistant coach Steve Robinson.

DECEMBER 9, 1981 The Highlanders defeated Pembroke State, 56-53, before a capacity crowd in the first game ever played in the Dedmon Center. The Dedmon Center was the 10th permanent structure in the United States with an air-supported fabric roof built.

1984 Radford, a charter member of the Big South Conference, began its first season of play as a Division I member by going 16-12.

1988 The Highlanders made their first-ever appearance in the Big South Conference title game, losing 71-56 to Winthrop. RU finished the season with a record of 16-14. After guiding the Highlanders to 165 wins, Joe Davis steps aside as the team’s head coach and Oliver Purnell takes over.

1991 RU opened the year with a school-record eight straight wins and went on to post a 22-7 overall record. It was RU’s first 20-win season as a Division I member.

APRIL 10, 1991 After one year as an assistant coach, Ron Bradley took over for Oliver Purnell as head coach, becoming the fourth coach in school history.

1992 Bradley’s first squad etched their place in Highlander history by going 20-9 and capturing the Big South regular season title. The team, which rallied from a second half deficit in 12 of its 20 wins, was dubbed the “Never-Say-Die-landers” by the local media.

FEBRUARY 4, 1993 Doug Day hit his NCAA-record 364th career trey against Campbell. Day, who is still RU’s all-time leading scorer, finished his career with 401 3-pointers.

1993 Doug Day became the first, and to date, the only player in school history to surpass 2,000 points.

1993-94 Widely regarded as one of the best teams in school history, the 1993-94 squad finished the season with a record of 20-8 but suffered a heartbreaking

loss to Campbell in the semifinals of the Big South Tournament. On Dec. 30, The Highlanders went to Baton Rouge, La., and defeated LSU, 73-72, on a last second jumper by RU great Don Burgess.

1997 Anthony Walker became RU’s career assists leader with 510. He also finished second in career points (1,601) and steals (183).

FEBRUARY 28, 1998 Kevin Robinson scooped up an offensive rebound and drained a 14-footer at the buzzer in the Highlanders a 63-61 win over UNCA, giving Radford its first ever Big South Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. The shot capped RU’s improbable rally from a 17-point first-half deficit.

MARCH 12, 1998 The Highlanders lose to Duke, 99-63, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Radford, the 16th seed, played in front of a then-school record 16,824 fans in the South Region contest held in Lexington, Ky., at Rupp Arena.

FEBRUARY 24, 2001 Radford closed out a perfect 10-0 record at home with a win over Liberty. The Highlanders ran their Big South home streak to 18 winning 27 out of their last 29 home conference games.

MARCH 21, 2002 Dr. Ron Bradley stepped down as head coach after posting a record of 193-124 in 11 seasons.

APRIL 8, 2002 Radford named Byron Samuels the school’s fifth head coach. Samuels served as Bradley’s assistant during the 2001-02 season.

MARCH 7, 2003 Samuels led sixth-seeded Radford to an upset of second-seeded Liberty on their own floor in his first season as head coach. Radford advanced to the finals of the Big South Championship for the fourth time in six years.

2006 Whit Holcomb-Faye finished with 669 points, the best single-season effort in Radford history and third best in Big South history. He also finished second in points at Radford with 1,856 and third in the Big South all-time.

2007 Byron Samuels resigns his head coaching position prior to the start of the season. He finished with a 58-87 record in five years. Chris Oliver finishes his career ranked third at Radford in scoring with 1,659 points.

MARCH 23, 2007 Brad Greenberg is hired as Radford University’s sixth head coach after serving the previous three years as Virginia Tech’s associate head coach.

NOVEMBER 14, 2008 With renovations to the Dedmon Center ongoing, Radford makes its first appearance in 500-seat Peters Hall since Feb. 24, 1981 with a season-opening 74-55 win over Brevard.

JANUARY 21, 2009 Following nearly $16 million worth of renovations on the Dedmon Center, including the replacement of its air-supported roof, the Highlanders re-opened the building in front of a capacity crowd with a Big South first-place battle against VMI.

MARCH 7, 2009 Behind a Big South tournament record scoring performance, Radford won its second conference tournament title with a nationally-televised 108-94 win over VMI at the Dedmon Center. Art Parakhouski, an AP Honorable Mention All-American, was named tournament MVP after a 26-point, 18-rebound performance to lead the Highlanders to their second NCAA Tournament appearance.

MARCH 19, 2009 Before a school-record 20,226 fans at the Greensboro Coliseum, 16th-seeded Radford made its second NCAA Tournament appearance, falling to eventual national champion and South Region No. 1 seed North Carolina 101-58. The Highlanders closed out the season winning 17 of their last 20 games on the way to the school’s seventh 20-win year.

JUNE 14, 2011 Mike Jones named the seventh head men’s basketball coach in Radford program history. Jones was a part of the VCU staff that made a trip to the Final Four with the Rams.

MARCH 19, 2014 Radford defeats Oregon State on the road in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI), 96-92. The win is the first NCAA postseason victory in school history and the 22nd of the season, which ties the Division I school record in a single season.

MARCH 4, 2018 Hosting the Big South Championship game in front of a sellout crowd at the Dedmon Center, No. 2 Radford tops No. 5 Liberty, 55-52, thanks to Carlik Jones’ buzzer-beating, game-winning three-pointer to clinch the program’s third conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

MARCH 13, 2018 With the nation’s eyes squarely on the Highlanders as they played in the NCAA First Four in Dayton, Radford defeated LIU Brooklyn, 71-61, for the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history. The win also marked a program-record 23rd win on the season. Radford would go on to face No. 1 Villanova (the eventual National Champions) in the next round.

NOvember 30, 2018 Defeated No. 17 Texas, 62-59, in Austin. It was the first ranked opponent Radford has defeated in program history.

february 27, 2020 Defeated Hampton, 81-78, to clinch the program’s third straight 20-win season; the most in Radford men’s hoops history

He delivered on that potential with a phenomenal career and capped it with a stellar senior campaign that included 669 points and 23.1 points per game – both of which rank first in a single season at Radford. The Winston-Salem native sits third in career total points (1,856) and second in points per game (17.7), while also ranking inside the top 10 in field goals made, three-pointers made and free throws made at Radford. Holcomb-Faye finished his career eighth in scoring among all players in the Big South before beginning a professional career overseas.

CHRIS OLIVER

(MEN’S BASKETBALL / 2003-07) CLASS OF 2017

Oliver (’07) had a stellar all-around four-year career for the Highlanders and is only one of eight players in the Big South Conference to record at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 steals, 100 blocks and 100 assists. A native of Winston Salem, N.C., Oliver ranks second in Radford history with 845 rebounds and fourth with 1,659 points. He ranks all-time in the Radford career top-10 in seven categories (total rebounds, total points, field goals made, free throws made, blocked shots, points per game and rebounds per game). DAN GRUBBS

(MEN’S BASKETBALL / 1978-80) CLASS OF 2014

A two-year member of the Highlanders, Dan Grubbs (‘80) was a force in the paint. In 1978-79, Grubbs set the single-season rebounding (269) caroms and finished with 511 career rebounds, which was second all-time upon his graduation. His career 9.3 rebounds per game stood as the program standard until the completion of the 200910 season. Grubbs pulled down a single-game record 19 boards as both a junior and senior. On top of those marks, he recorded the best singleseason (.688/1979-80) and career (.652) field goal percentage in Radford history. Part of Radford’s first scholarship class, Grubbs, a two-year captain, was a key cog on the 1978-79 squad that went 23-4, which remains the benchmark for victories in a single season.

DON BURGESS

(1990-94) - MEN’S BASKETBALL CLASS OF 2013

A first-team All-Big South selection in 1994, Don Burgess (‘94) finished his career with 1,452 points, which at the time, was second on the Radford scoring list. More than just a scoring threat, Burgess also ranked in the top-10 in career steals (5th-162), rebounds (5th-614), and assists (9th-231) when his career ended. These totals currently place him sixth on the all-time steals list and 10th in rebounds. Burgess owns the Radford record for career free throw percentage as well (.842). including the only undefeated home season since becoming a Division I program in 1984-85 (13-0 in 1993-94).

DR. RON BRADLEY

(1991-2002) - MEN’S BASKETBALL (COACH) CLASS OF 2012 During his 11-year tenure (1991-2002) as

Radford’s head coach, Dr. Ron Bradley compiled a 109-47 regular-season Big South record (.699 winning percentage) and was 193-124 overall (.609) -- becoming the Conference’s all-time leader in both categories upon his departure in 2002. He held the overall wins record until 2007 and the Big South victory standard until January 2010. Inducted into the Big South Hall of Fame in 2010, Bradley led Radford to a 20-9 record and the school’s first Big South Regular Season Championship in his first season (1991-92), earning Big South Coach of the Year honors. He also led the Highlanders to the 1998 Big South Tournament Championship and the school’s first-ever NCAA berth. In all, Bradley had four 20-win seasons -- second most by a coach in Big South history, and directed the Highlanders to the Big South Semifinals in 10 of his 11 seasons. In addition, Bradley’s squads won three regularseason Big South titles while advancing to the Big South Championship game in 1998, 1999 and 2001.

BILLY MYERS

(1982-86) - MEN’S BASKETBALL CLASS OF 2005

Billy Myers (‘86) was one of Radford basketball’s first four-year starters, entering school at a pivotal juncture as the Highlanders transitioned from NAIA competition all the way to NCAA Division I play. A pure shooter, Myers would score 1,178 points during his career, but was often asked to sacrifice his scoring to play point guard and his consistently hard-nosed defense. He started in 104 of 108 games and also ranks among the school’s all-time leaders in steals. A team captain and recognized leader on campus, Myers graduated in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in statistics. The Highlanders averaged 15 wins a season during his career from 1982-86, moving up a level in competition each year. The Blacksburg native became Radford’s first Division I Academic All-American in basketball and was a Dean’s Scholar nominee in math and statistics.

JOE DAVIS

Davis successfully guided the Highlander men’s basketball program from an unaffiliated small college entry all the way to the NCAA Division I ranks. He posted nine winning seasons in 10 years as Radford’s head coach from 1978-88, including a 23-4 record in 1978-79 and a 16-12 mark in 1984-85, Radford’s first Division I season. Davis left Radford as the Highlanders’ all-time winningest coach, posting 165 victories and a .589 winning percentage. Davis earned his master’s degree in physical education from Radford in 1970.

DOUG DAY

(1989-93) - MEN’S BASKETBALL CLASS OF 1998

Day completed his Radford career as the NCAA Division I career leader in three-point baskets made. He sank 401 three-pointers during his career from 1989-1993, and left Radford as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,027 points. Day (‘94)

led the nation in three-point baskets per game with 4.03 per contest, and earned All-Big South honors during each of his four seasons at Radford. He averaged 17.3 ppg for his career, and left Radford ranked second on the Big South Conference career scoring chart. Day’s offensive prowess helped Radford to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1990-91 and 1991-92, and to the Highlanders’ first regular season conference crown in 1991-92. Day earned a degree in education from RU in 1994.

STEVE ROBINSON

(1978-80, 1983-86) - MEN’S BASKETBALL (STUDENT-ATHLETE/COACH) CLASS OF 1997

Robinson (‘81, ‘85) was one of the first scholarship athletes ever at Radford University. Robinson was a two-year starter and co-captain for the men’s basketball team from 1978-80, averaging 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds in 54 games. Robinson averaged 11.5 points and 6.8 rebounds during one of Radford’s greatest seasons ever, the 23-4 year in 1978-79, under coach Joe Davis. He hit 51.7 percent of his field goals, and later distinguished himself as an assistant coach at Radford from 1983-86. The Roanoke native earned both his bachelor’s (‘81) and master’s (‘85) degrees from Radford, and has gone on to great success as a collegiate head coach. Robinson led the University of Tulsa to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances before landing the head coaching position at Florida State. Robinson is currently Roy Williams’ top assistant at the University of North Carolina.

RON SHELBURNE

(1987-91) - MEN’S BASKETBALL CLASS OF 1996

Shelburne, a native of nearby Snowville, Va., became only the fourth Radford men’s basketball player to score more than 1,000 points and grab more than 500 rebounds in a career. A three-time team Most Valuable Player, he led the Highlanders in scoring in 1989-90 and earned Big South AllConference honors in 1990-91. (1981-85) - MEN’S BASKETBALL CLASS OF 1995

Smith finished his sterling four-year basketball career from 1981-1985 as the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. In the process, the 6-5 Amherst, Va., native keyed Radford’s move from NAIA competition to NCAA Division II play and then Division I. A fierce competitor, Smith started each of Radford’s 107 games during his career and shot 52.7 percent from the field. He scored 1,313 points and pulled down 739 rebounds, leading the team in rebounding and field goal percentage three years. Remaining active at his alma mater, Smith has served on the Athletic Association Advisory Council and on the National Alumni Association Executive Council.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

Founded in 1983, the Big South Conference has been an exemplary leader in college athletics, dedicated to developing student-athletes through the pursuit of excellence in the classroom, community and field of play. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is made evident by its multitude of athletic accomplishments, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages and most importantly, its commitment to fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of its studentathletes. Comprised of 11 member institutions sharing a common geographic region and similar academic values and purposes, the Big South’s remarkable history of achievement is characterized by the league’s 19 championship sports and the profound academic and life successes of its more than 4,200 student-athletes. This has evolved into the conference’s “Where Winners Are Made” mantra as part of a new strategic emphasis on becoming the premiere non-FBS conference in the Southeast. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced its most pivotal accomplishments in the league’s history both athletically and academically, such as: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

On April 24, 1983, Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the fledgling league, and less than four months later on August 21, the Big South Conference was formed when Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop committed to the new conference. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the league received its first automatic bid -- an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third Commissioner, and in his 22 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the conference to unprecedented heights.During his tenure, men’s and women’s indoor track & field (1997), football (2002) and women’s lacrosse (2013) were added as sponsored sports. The conference has also enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue, in addition to extensive television coverage for women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time. The league as a whole has enjoyed increased national television exposure through aggressive and unique television packages. Conference membership has solidified with the additions of Hampton University and USC Upstate this year, plus High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, as well as the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the conference introduced its first live streaming event in 2005 and has consistently provided video offerings of more than 850 annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Ongoing equipment upgrades will allow these productions to become “TV-ready” in the near future, while the emphasis on video integration has allowed the conference to expand its reach globally as well as serve as a model for peer conferences to emulate. Kallander has also pushed initiatives around student-athlete wellness, such as an annual Health & Safety Summit that began in 2016.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a distinctive athletic conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. An updated strategic plan was launched in 2015 with the objective to transform the Big South Conference into the premiere non-FBS conference in the Southeast. The primary areas of focus are basketball success, media exposure, academic centrality, student-athlete experience and messaging/branding. In 2017, the league overhauled its identity with the most comprehensive rebrand in the 33-year history of the Big South Conference. The rebrand included a new brand identity featuring an adjusted color scheme, the introduction of a secondary logo and an extensive advertising campaign to enliven the conference’s distinct values, its roots in the Southeast region of the United States and its vision for the future. The foundation of the rebrand was built from the conference’s Live, Love and Life pillars, which are externally expressed through the conference’s new “Where Winners Are Made” mantra. Crafted in collaboration with conference leadership and student-athletes, the tagline (and corresponding #BigSouthMade hashtag) embodies and affirms the Big South’s commitment to developing studentathletes for profound success through Division I collegiate athletics and transformative academics. Prominent Big South athletic alumni include multi-Olympians Amber Campbell and Taylor Milne; 2016 U.S. Open Champion Dustin Johnson; former American League All-Star Ty Wigginton; Cleveland Indians pitcher Cody Allen; Oakland Athletics pitcher Ryan Dull; Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman, NFL running back and “Dancing with the Stars” champion Rashad Jennings; ESPN personality Sam Ponder, threetime NFL Pro Bowler Justin Bethel and WNBA veteran Avery Warley. Distinguished alumni from Big South member institutions include Charlotte Hornets President Fred Whitfield (Campbell), U.S. Senator Tim Scott (Charleston Southern), Basketball Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore (GardnerWebb), Educator, author, orator, and advisor to U.S. presidents Booker T. Washington (Hampton), Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter Donna Fargo (High Point), former LPGA player Tina Barrett (Longwood), HGTV

President Jim Samples (Presbyterian), former U.S. National Men’s Soccer Team member Dante Washington (Radford), former Weather Channel anchor Kristina Abernathy (UNC Asheville) NBA player Torrey Craig (USC Upstate) and actress Andie MacDowell (Winthrop). The conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, more than 50 percent of conference’s student-athletes have been named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year -- including a record 59.69 percent in 2016-17 -- and the league has experienced year-to-year APR improvements over the last five years.
