The 2012 Bachelors of Fine Arts Show in the Gibson Gal lery has set the bar higher for artists throughout the SUNY system. The works of Danielle Wieres, Mario A. Colón, Kate Kuligowski, Laura Hadley, Elizabeth LaBarge, Katherine Ir win, Angela Marken, Rachael Kmack and Carlie Miller will be featured in Brainerd Hall until May 20. Each artist developed a theme to be put on display as part of their year long senior thesis. Themes range greatly. “Strength in confinement in the meat packing industry,” and

“Human and animal hybrids to show stereotypes in society” are just two of the nine thought provoking ideas explored. It is easy to see the development of each motif as the artists grew over the course of the academic year. After hundreds of hours in the studio and advisement from faculty of the art department, these works radiate the hard work and tal ent of the seniors. “It isn’t uncommon to have six hour stu dio sessions almost everyday to prepare works for a show,” said Carlie Miller, a senior featured in the show. The gallery shows each of the mediums in great light. The show features mixed medium sculptures, charcoal drawings, oil paintings and digitally altered photographs.

“Toddlers and Tiaras” is disgusting “Sugar and spice and everything nice” is what little girls are said to be made of, but whoever coined this expression seems to have left a few things out, like fake teeth, hair extensions, spray tans, three pounds worth of makeup and a bad attitude. At least if they were talking about the girls on TLC’s “Toddlers & Tiaras.” Each hourlong episode of “Toddlers & Ti aras” follows around three girls and their fami lies as they prepare for and compete in beauty pageants. The ages of the girls featured range between three years old to the preteen years, and they are usually the only children in their families. In preparing for the pageants these children are subject to many things way beyond their age levels, including being forced by their parents to practice for the pageants for literally hours into the night when the children are home from school. In order to prepare for pageants lookwise, these girls are subjected to face wash es and creams, exfoliating treatments, eyebrow waxing, spray tans, fake eyelashes, hair exten sions and wigs; they even go as far as shaving their legs. Then, for the actual competition these children wear elaborate, expensive dresses and often times clothes that are very revealing and provocative. One episode of the hit show fea tured a Hawaiianthemed fashion show for which most girls were dressed in bikinis more properly suited for adults. There is absolutely no reason for such young children to experience things like hav ing their legs shaved and what it feels like to wear such large amounts of makeup. A three yearold girl should be in overalls with her hair in pigtails playing in the mud in her backyard, not spending hours being turned into a Bar bie doll so people can gawk at her on stage. “Toddlers and Tiaras” doesn’t deserve blame

Welcome to the parallel universe of “Tod dlers and Tiaras,” where six and sevenyearold girls are already accustomed to experimenting with hair extensions and teeth whiteners. These miniature beauty contestants have the once inalifetime opportunity to model costumes that cost about as much as a standard wedding gown. Amid all the curling irons and spray tan, ‘“Toddlers and Tiaras” has struck a combative chord with many viewers because of the show’s scandalous nature. Whether or not this show is still on air makes no difference; pageant mothers will still

sign their little princesses up for contests. The show itself shouldn’t be credited with anything more than exacerbating and exposing the problem. In many episodes, the producers of “Toddlers and Tiaras” do take the viewers’ posi tion on bad parenting. In one particular episode, )"#$/"%G$'28#9$+$"#+)#9$+5;-8#6)$:#)G##6$)"#$ 8%)"#5$ +69$ &+)"#5$ +69$ )"#$ &+)"#5>/$ C-/).'(+).%6$ for taking his daughter out of the pageant alto gether and having her focus on school instead of pageant training. “Toddlers and Tiaras” isn’t a show that only showcases the fancy prizes the contestants get at the end of their pageants, but )"+)$'28/$)"#$4+;#+6)$45%(#//$&5%8$#F#57$+6;2#$ – good or bad. The argument here shouldn’t be against the media and “Toddlers and Tiaras,” but against the theory of child beauty pageants in general. If anything, this show serves as a medium to expose the early sexualization of young girls when they’re parading around in skimpy “Pretty Woman” costumes. Peter Mueller seems to think that atheists don’t exist. This is due to the atheist subscribing to a moral code, or believing in a variety of other things such as love, justice, family, etc. Once an atheist expresses belief in any of these things, they are actually acknowledging that God exists. Mueller seems to think that these concepts can only exist because God created them. This right here is a false dilemma. Mueller is arguing that if morality does not stem from God, then morality doesn’t exist. But are these

really the only two options? There are a number of objective ethical theories in philosophy that don’t require a deity. For example, utilitarian ism allows us to make moral decisions based on )"#$;5#+)#/)$"+44.6#//$45.6(.42#$H.6$%)"#5$G%59/A$ &%5$ )"#$ ;5#+)#/)$ ;%%9I<$ $J6%)"#5$ %:C#().F#$ #)". cal theory is Kant’s deontology. ing independent of a god. So next time a theist argues that we need God to have any notion of morality, you can point to one of these two ethi cal theories as a counterexample to their claim. So, Peter Mueller, we do exist and we don’t need some deity to tell us what is right or wrong.

Pointercounts go After Hours with latest album !"#$%#&'()%* +$",,&-#.$%#

Nearing its twentieth year as an a cap pella ensemble on SUNY Potsdam’s campus, The Potsdam Pointercounts have recently released their latest fulllength album After Hours. Despite the amount of new faces within the group, the effort is a shining ex ample of the group’s ability to arrange and perform complex renditions of classic and current pop tunes. “It was hard at the beginning, we had a lot of new voices and it took some time to learn how to blend with each other,” said senior Brandon Manning on The Pointercounts’s Fall 2011 lineup. as always, though, the group pulled themselves together to perform in Tully, Buffalo, Brooklyn, and even in front of the worldrenowned FAO Schwarz toy store in New York City. Locally, the group has volunteered their performance prowess for the Sheard Literacy Center, and also for

the Toys for Tots Program for which they raised roughly $400 and various toys during the holiday season. The Pointercounts also just hosted their annual Invitational concert, featuring singers from all sorts of ensembles and locations. “It’s always great to share the stage with such talented performers,” said Pointercounts president Earl Kirkpatrick. He expressed the group’s mutual interest in per forming with other a cappella groups from around campus, stating, “Sometimes when watching other groups I think, ‘Oh wow, I liked that. How can we do that?’” Also join ing them onstage for the invitational were some Pointercounts alumni who traveled to join in the traditional showcloser, “Irish Blessing”. Despite their busy performing schedule, the group found time in January to travel South and record at an Alum’s basement with Liquid 5th, a company specialized in a cap pella recording. Packed into the basement of the Alum’s home, the group alternated be

The end product is nothing to shake a paddle at, though, as the performance and production on the album are at a level one would expect of a professionally touring ensemble. While Liquid 5th was able to make the voices and vo cal percussion of the group have a crisp sort 21#3()*%&%2*#%*3%.+&%8(#21#$'+&#2*(#$2!,3#+0 sume is a highbudget studio, they were also able to throw in small creative touches such as a dubstepesque breakdown in the groups arrangement of “Forget You” using only the vocal tracks. While the album features arrange ments of tracks such as “Tears in Heaven”, “MMMBop”, and “Blackbird”, many of the members agreed a highlight of the album

is the group’s cover of Lady Gaga’s “Tele phone”. “It’s really fun to perform live, but the recording allows the complexity of the arrangement to really be fully appreciated,” said Kirkpatrick on alumnus Christopher Oill’s arrangement of the tun. While the recording is certainly a formi dable achievement for the group, I was as sured that plans are already in motion for the group’s twentieth anniversary next Spring. Because the group was a product of a bar bershop quartet formed in ’92, the group is doing all they can to get those original four back in Potsdam. Other than that, the group is aspiring to get every alumni of the group back for a giant performance. Said Manning on their hope to bring back alumni “Being a member in this group comes with so much honor and responsibility. We can never settle for anything less than the best because of what the alumni have accomplished in the group.”

Wagner’s opus at the Roxy !"#$%#&'()%* +$",,&-#.$%#

If you’ve been sleeping on The Roxy’s weekly showings of The Met: Live in HD since arriving in Potsdam, now’s the time to shape up and spend an evening at the opera. While two of the install ments have already been shown,

three chapters of Wagner’s Ring cycle have yet to be screened as part of a feature meant to show the opus in its entirety, as well as a documentary depicting the dif ).!,&%(0#12-#.2*3!.&2-0#+*3#.2> panies who aspire to perform the cycle. Based around the exploits of ancient gods, creatures, and an allpowerful ring, Wagner’s cre ation spans a scope of lore that gives Mr. Tolkein a serious run for his money in the complex narrative department. While a summation of the story is a bit too much to spell out in a few perfunctory sentences, the music of Wagner’s masterpiece is cer tainly nothing to scoff at either. For those unaware, Wagner was legendary for demanding great feats of musicianship from those who performed his music, often expecting singers to reach several degrees of tone out of their gener ally expected range. If you’re thinking the high vi bratos and obscure dialect will be too much to sit through, fear not, for The Metropolitan Opera

?194'#@!"*80*%'#!*,!.&'!+,'($8082%

has gone through great lengths to make the dated production appealing to even the most ca sual of modern audiences. By utilizing modern video screens and lighting techniques (as well as top notchperformers and set designers) Wagner’s concept has become a fullyrealized act which relies equally on the sing ers’ delivery as the visual repre sentation of the narrative. Don’t believe me? Check out the com pany’s trailer for the Ring cycle at metoperafamily.org and see for yourself just how far the opera has come in a hundred years. While the documentary Wag ner’s Dream and prelude to the cycle Das Rheingold have al ready been show, you can still catch Die Walkure, Siegfried, and Gotterdammerung on May 14, 16, and 19 (respectively) at 6:30 p.m. each night. While you may think it’s worth it to watch The Avengers a few more times, this epic screening of such a monu mental work is something that won’t be happening in Potsdam again anytime soon.

Greek of the Week: Chris Knight !"#$%&'%$"%() *+,$+-%$.

The school year has come to an end, but the Greek of the Week will live on. This column has taught me that the people I have met and in terviewed are some of the most de voted and involved members of our student body here at SUNY Pots dam. So here’s one last shout out to all the Greeks who made it to the column this year, and a great big thank you to AGC and to the entire Greek community! This week, I met with Chris Knight, a junior majoring in Music Education for Voice with a minor in Music Business. A member of Phi Mu Alpha, Chris was recently elected to become the new Treasur er of AGC next fall, and he is really excited to be on the Eboard. Good morning, Potsdam! This is a story your history books left out, partially because it was an embar rassment. I think we need to be told about the lesserknown landing at Brest, France in 1944. The military strategists were at a meeting and they needed a mas cot that screamed America, but that !"#$%& '$("& )*+,-& .'/,'01& 23450!'& wasn’t bringing in the war bonds they needed, nor was he doing any killing because he was stateside. The military commander declared, “We need a new war hero! Some one every American can stand behind and who can say ‘try and mess with us now.’ But none of you military eggheads can think of anything besides bigger guns and throwing spider DNA into en emy soldiers. You there intern wanna keep your job? Give me a dynamite idea.” This was the cof 644& 01,4517(& )5(,& !+'1!4& ,"& ,'$8& 01& three months. Sure, he had degrees in military strategy, but he didn’t have any experience. He stood up slowly and his voice cracked when he spoke: “Bears.” “What was that son? Louder for the whole room.” He was trembling. “Bears, sir.” The room was silent ‘til the command er broke in: “Pack up your things son… cause you just got promoted! Here, take Johnson’s seat; Johnson 9"#754&)54%-&:4,&,+4&+4$$&"#,&"6&39& war room. Goddamn nothing is more American than the American grizzly bear. Son you just became head of the Bear division!” ;& <4!'34& ,+4& )5(,& $4'%45& "6& ,+4& newly created bear initiative, code named ”Jellystone Attacks.” The US army commanded us to go stun, bait and tame bears. These bears were Americanized and trained to kill. OK, I lied. They were trained not to kill fellow soldiers and han dlers; the rest were fair game. In hindsight, not the best move, but the US army wasn’t interested in safety. They wanted beasts that ="#$%&*"&01,"&'&5'*4>)$$4%&3#5%45& tunnel vision, taking out anything in their paths. Teaching them to kill on command would be like build ing a submarine that can’t dive. You’re losing all that potential! 700 lbs of potential! We even had a new slogan for the regiment: “War bonds buy bullets…and bears!” June 5, 1944 was code named “Bearday.” We were shipping out to the coast of Brest. Our mission was to swiftly move up the beach front and take the artillery positions that would be pounding Normandy the next day. We had been training for 6 months and our animals were hungry for combat. Our troop trans port was 30 seconds out. The ocean was rough as artillery shots came for us. 20 seconds. Machine gun ners opened up and shots dinged off the transport. 10 seconds. My eyes closed and the gate dropped. .5'/-& ?'@0& <4'5(A&B+49& 3#(,& +'C4& intercepted our training videos! Our grizzlies raced out to meet their imported German counterparts. The men stormed the beach as the bears clashed and clawed. The han dlers stayed with their animals and gave them pointers like, “Watch the armbar,” and “Aim below the belt.” In the end, our superior bear num bers won us the beach. Each bear was given a medal, but the next day they escaped into the wild. This is why the French have the saying “Mon dieu, cet ours est de manger ma tete.” It means, “My God, this bear is eating my head!” No need to thank us.

Hamilton blasts four homers !"#$%"&&"'( !)('*+$,-.*('

Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers went 55 with four home runs on Tuesday, making him only the 16th player in the history of Ma jor League Baseball to accomplish such a feat. Winner of the 2010 American Most Valuable Player Award, Hamilton is a serious con tender for the Triple Crown in the American League this season. So far in 2012 the Rangers slugger has posted a batting average of .406 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs, which positions him at the top of every one of those categories in the American League thus far. The alltime leader in saves, Yankees closer Mariano Rivera tore his ACL and meniscus in his right knee last weekend. Rivera made it clear in an interview earlier this week that he does not want to go out like this; that he doe not want to retire due to injury. Despite his age, the Yan kees are optimistic that 42yearold Mo will make a full recovery after he has surgery. The New York Knicks ended the NBA’s longest losing streak in the postseason as they won game four against the Miami Heat. The Knicks announced earlier this week that they will be without point guard Jeremy Lin for the rest of the series. Lin could possibly return for a second round series if New York can rally from a 30 series def icit, a task that has never been com pleted before in the history of the !"#$%"&' ' ()#*"' +,-./0' #01' 23,-4' Paul have led the Los Angeles Clip 5",4'-0'63"-,'/,46',7%01'4",-"4'8-63' 63"'9":53-4'+,-;;)"4&''<0'3-4'/,46' .7%,'5746=4"#470'$#:"4'+,-./0'3#4' dominated the post and is averag ing 21.5 points and 6.3 rebounds a game.
