SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY GEORGE BRAY NEIGHBORHOOD YMCA The George Bray Neighborhood YMCA will house a range of programs designed to increase the strength and effectiveness of community life and improve local conditions, especially for youth in disadvantaged situations. The Y’s ability to provide these programs depends on contributions. Please consider helping.

YOUNG LEADERS ACADEMY

The Young Leaders Academy (YLA) is a year-round program consisting of three components dedicated to reversing the negative trend of low academic achievement and stereotypical behavior of youth ages 7-18 from low-income communities in Racine. The YLA’s mission is to nurture the development of leadership abilities and life skills of youth, empowering them to improve the quality of their life and assist them in becoming productive citizens.

COMPONENT 1: SCHOOL ACHIEVERS

An after school leadership program for 2nd-5th graders, offering: homework assistance, tutoring, leadership group sessions and recreational activities. Programming is currently held at 4 elementary school sites: Giese, Knapp, RCLA and Wadewitz Elementary Schools. Program hours are Monday thru Thursday from the time school dismisses until 5:30pm.

COMPONENT 2: YOUNG ACHIEVERS

A program for 6th-8th graders designed to prepare them for the academic and social rigors of high school and beyond. Young Achievers allows students to participate according to their interests, and provides students with the opportunity to enhance their academic progress, increase existing skills and pursue their interests. Program hours are Monday & Wednesday 4:00pm-6:00pm. Location: Bray Branch (Transportation available)

COMPONENT 3: TEEN ACHIEVERS

A teen program for 9th-12th graders that offers participants college readiness, college tours, collaboration with local businesses and career exploration workshops. Achievers also receive a free YMCA membership. Program hours are Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00pm-8:00pm

YLA SUMMER SESSION 75 Youth will participate in an interactive six-week summer session at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI. Qualified applicants must be incoming 3rd – 8th grade students. Youth will attend 3 academic classes each morning and participate in recreational and educational activities in the afternoons. Field-trips and community service projects are offered on Fridays. (additional cost for field-trips) Starting June 19, 2017- July 28, 2017. Program operates: Monday–Thursday from 8:30 AM–3:30 PM Cost: $130 YLA Member/$180 General Public Deposit: $50 per child reserves space Extended Care: 6:30am-8:30am & 3:30pm-5:30pm $25 per child, per week (All fees are non-refundable)

P.R.E.P.

The Personal Responsibility Education Program is focused on preventing unintended teen pregnancies and STI’s while also incorporating important adult preparation subjects such as building healthy relationships, learning about financial literacy and focusing on educational attainment. Although the program is open to all, P.R.E.P. targets African American and Latino youth because of the discrepancies in their rates of unintended pregnancies and contractions of STI’s compared to their white counterparts.

FOCUS ON FATHERS INITIATIVE

Focus on Fathers provides fathers with support to help them become better fathers and providers. This Initiative offers education and support programs that improve parenting skills, personal relationships, financial literacy and employment status. Focus on Fathers takes a holistic and non-judgmental approach to helping fathers embrace all aspects of responsible fatherhood. These programmatic supports include:

FATHER FRIENDLY EMPLOYMENT

Fathers will engage in four monthly employment readiness workshops, job search assistance and employment referrals.

NURTURING FATHERS™

NFP aims to help fathers become nurturing fathers to their children. Upon completion of the Father Friendly Employment program, fathers will attend Nurturing Fathers™ classes twice a week for 6 weeks.

WITHIN OUR REACH™

Upon completing Nurturing Fathers™, fathers will enroll in the 3 week Within Our Reach™ program, engaging in six group sessions on enhancing the relationship with spouse or partner.

FINANCIAL LITERACY CONFERENCES

Through quarterly conferences, fathers will take part in workshops to enhance their knowledge and skills in areas such as money management, credit, savings, home ownership, etc.

AQUATIC PROGRAMS

Welcome to the Summer Session of the YMCA Aquatic Programs. Registration deadline will be 2 days prior to session starting. If there are fewer than 3 children registered, class can be held only if the participants are willing to pay the semiprivate fee. Whenever possible, classes will be combined to accommodate your preferred schedule. Students must have swim teacher’s approval to move up to the next level. Classes are not pro-rated. Swim class make-ups are for medical reasons only. At the time of registration, please tell the Welcome Center staff which branch registration is for.

SCHOOL AGE SWIM LESSONS (Ages 6-12 years)

4 week session(8x)

Location: Lap Pool - Children learn the fundamentals of swimming and water safety with increased stroke development and endurance as levels increase. Classes will not exceed an 8 to 1 student/instructor ratio. All classes are 45 minutes in length and taught in the Lap Pool. The prerequisite for each level is successful demonstration of the skills taught in the preceding level. Beginners start at Polliwog (Level 1), which has no prerequisite.

POLLIWOG (Level 1)

Prerequisites: Class designed for children new to lessons or that have not taken lessons in a long time. Goals: Comfort in the water, front and back floating, comfort in deep and shallow water. Primary Skills: Floating on front and back, comfort in water both deep and shallow, front and back crawl arms and legs.

PARENT/TODDLER LESSONS (Ages 6 - 36 months)

Water comfort and swimming skills taught through a variety of fun activities. Parents and children will be guided through introductory swimming skills and safety precautions preparing them for classes without the aid of a parent.

FROGFISH (Level 2)

Accompany your child in the pool to learn methods that help him/her enjoy and respect the water environment through movement exploration, songs, and games.

Prerequisites: Able to swim 40 ft. with assistance and 20 ft. without assistance. Goals: Swimming on front and back independently, comfort in deep water. Primary Skills: Beginning rotary breathing, breaststroke arms, elementary back stroke arms and building endurance on front and back crawl strokes.

PERCH (Ages 18 – 36 months)

GUPPY (Level 3)

SHRIMP/KIPPER/INIA (Ages 6 – 18 months)

Children learn to move independently through the water under a parent’s guidance. Instructor guides parents to teach their children basic swimming skills.

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS (Ages 3-5 years)

Location: Instructional & Lap Pools - This program offers children their first experience in the pool without a parent, made possible through a variety of fun activities & games. Classes provide a step-by-step progression of swimming and water safety without the aid of a flotation device, designed to adequately prepare your child for the youth program. Student/Instructor ratio will not exceed 5 to 1. All preschool classes are 30 minutes in length.

PIKE (Preschool Level 1) Prerequisites: None, great for beginning swimmers Goals: Comfort in the water and building basic skills for future levels Primary Skills: Supported back and front floats, kicking, bubble blowing, alternate arm action and basic water safety. Parents are not in water with their children.

EEL (Preschool Level 2) Prerequisites: Submerge face for 3 seconds and be able to swim 5 ft. unassisted back to a wall. Should be able to float on front and back with support. Goals: Basic stroke movements Primary skills: Float on front and back without assistance, build confidence in water, front alternating arm paddling and kicking on back.

RAY (Preschool Level 3)

Prerequisites: Able to swim 25 yards with assistance and able to swim 50 ft. without assistance. Goals: Build stroke mechanics and endurance. Primary Skills: Beginning rotary breathing, elementary back stroke kick and improved endurance on front and back crawl strokes.

MINNOW (Level 4) Prerequisites: Must be able to swim front and back crawl stroke 25 yards without assistance. Must demonstrate knowledge of sidestroke arms, breaststroke arms and elementary backstroke arms. Goals: Expand knowledge to include 5 strokes adding full elementary back stroke, full breast stroke and side stroke kick. Primary skills: Improved endurance with front and back crawls with rotary breathing. Elementary back stroke arms and legs, breast stroke arms and legs and side stroke kick.

FISH (Level 5) Prerequisites: Ability to swim front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast and side stroke for at least 25 yards without stopping. Goals: Stroke refinement, combine arms and legs on side stroke, introduce butterfly and increase endurance. Primary skills: Arms and legs on side stroke, rudimentary butterfly, build endurance and efficiency in all strokes.

FLYING FISH (Level 6)

Prerequisites: Ability to do front alternating arm strokes 15 ft. without assistance, and ability to float on front and back independently. Goals: Learn basics of rhythmic breathing, combining arms and legs on front and back. Primary Skills: Front and back alternating arm strokes, rudimentary rhythmic breathing and ability to swim longer distances without assistance.

Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 50 yards on all strokes except butterfly (25 yards) without stopping. Goals: Introduce lifesaving stroke, refine all strokes, build endurance and learn flip turns. Primary skills: Improved endurance with front and back crawls with rotary breathing. Elementary back stroke arms and legs, breast stroke arms and legs and side stroke kick.

STARFISH (Preschool Level 4)

SHARK (Level 7)

Prerequisites: Ability to take breath on own and continue swimming, ability to swim 15 feet with alternating back and front crawl arms and legs without assistance. Goals: Acclimation to Lap pool and deep water, swimming 25 yards with assistance, 40 ft. without assistance. Primary skills: Endurance building, rotary breathing, treading water, diving, front crawl and back crawl strokes.

Prerequisites: Ability to swim all 6 major strokes 100 yards continuously. Goals: Develop competitive swimming skills and increased endurance on butterfly. Primary skills: Flip turns on front and back crawl, breast stroke pull out, butterfly, surface diving, increase endurance and efficiency in all strokes.

PORPOISE (Level 8) Prerequisites: Be able to complete a 200 yard individual medley. Goals: Prepare student with the ability to participate in SEAY, high school swim team or a lifeguard class. Primary skills: Improve all four competitive strokes, starts, turns and finishes.

AQUATICS (continued) TEEN/ADULT SWIM LESSONS (Ages 13 & Older)

Classes for those who want to learn how to swim for the first time and classes that want to improve their stroke efficiency and endurance.

BEGINNER A class designed for adults and teens that have never swam before or are picking up after a long time out of the water.

EDUCATION The RACINE FAMILY YMCA is a leader in providing up-to-date training and certification through the American Red Cross. We regularly offer certification and challenge courses in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED and First Aid at our SEALED AIR BRANCH.

CPR & AED TRAINING

Class designed to develop basic stroke for new swimmers or those getting back into swimming after a long time away.

Learn a lifesaving skill that could save a friend, family member, co-worker, or neighbor. Using the American Red Cross CPR for the professional rescuer course we will teach you the skills knowledge and confidence to perform CPR and use an AED.

BOXING FOR BEGINNERS

Learn proper punching and footwork technique, practice pounding the heavy bag, and getting a rhythm out of the speed bag. The entire range of skills exclusive to boxing can be both taxing but also incredibly rewarding. Whether you are interested in learning the sport to compete or simply want to make sure you get the most from a boxing workout, this class is for you. Each class will have a different focus, be it ring work, boxing fitness, hitting the mitts, or beating up the bag. The last 15 minutes of the Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes is entirety optional and focuses on non contact sparring drills to help learn what makes the “sweet science” so sweet. Learn the latest moves in cheer and pom while having fun! Pom & Cheer class combines cheerleading skills with drill team style dancing. A performance will be held on the last day of the session. Program encourages students become members of their school cheerleading and/or pom squads. Attire for routine May 1-3, work out clothing & tennis shoes. and for official tryouts May 5th , wear white tshirt, black shorts/leggings & white shoes or jazz shoes. JR. VARSITY MEMBERS will perform in the Racine 4th of July parade, at H.S. JV football games, at H.S. JV Basketball games and participate in competitions and much more. The YMCA Diabetes Prevention program helps participants make lifestyle changes that will improve overall health & well-being and reduce the chances of developing the disease. A twelve-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. A survivor is anyone from the moment of diagnosis, throughout treatment & into remission. PARKINSON’S FITNESS CLASS

Participants may get a referral from physical therapy or their primary care physician. AFTER an assessment, participants will be involved in a one hour fitness class. Up to 30 minutes are spent walking on a treadmill to improve gait speed and balance. Another 30 minutes are spent in a toning/flexibility class with a focus on improving posture & balance. Personal trainer’s request 24 hours notice if cancelling an appointment. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be forfeited. All personal training sessions are nonrefundable and expire twelve months after date of purchase.

TEEN STRENGTH ATTACK (Ages 12-15)

A fitness coach will guide teens through proper use of cardio and selecterized strength circuit, teaching proper techniques and rules of the Wellness Center. This class and parental supervision are required for 12 to 15 year olds who want to use the Wellness Center. (FREE)

SMALL GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING(SGPT) (4-6 participants) Small Group Training (SGPT) provides the energy, camaraderie and push to attain personal goals. Enjoy a strong support system of like-minded individuals and have a blast while working out!

ANNUAL SUPPORT CAMPAIGN YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who could not otherwise afford memberships or programs. We raise funds through our Annual Support Campaign to ensure the Y is accessible to all people. This year 1 in 4 people who walk through our doors will receive financial assistance for part of their membership and/or program cost.
