Dave Musso is entering his seventh season as head coach of the Quincy University women's soccer team. In just six years at the helm he has had success that many coaches would like to have over their entire career, guiding his team to six consecutive NCAA Division II National Tournaments. He currently holds a 86-34-9 overall record through six seasons.

Musso played collegiately at Quincy University where he was a four-year letter winner for the Hawks. He was twice named GLVC All-Conference and earned All-Region honors as a senior. In addition Musso served as a team captain and was named the team's best defender in 2003 and was a two-time Academic All-Conference member.

Musso's foundation since arriving at Quincy has been a strong team defense and quality student-athletes. Under his guidance the Lady Hawks have had four All-Americans, 20 AllRegion and 30 All-Conference players. In addition the Lady Hawks have had three Academic All-Americans including two time honoree Becky Fleming.

Musso graduated from Quincy in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in sports management and in 2007 received his teaching certification in physical education and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Lindenwood.

Most recently, Musso guided the Lady Hawks to a 15-5-2 overall record and an 11-4-0 record in the GLVC. With a defense that ranked nationally in shutouts, goals-against, and goalsagainst average, the Lady Hawks earned their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance after a fourth place finish in the conference standings. The praised Lady Hawk defense tied a school record 14 shutouts while goalkeeper Jodi Chapie reached a school individual season record of 13 shutouts. The 2006 season marked Musso's first season and he made an immediate impact with the program. Musso guided the Lady Hawks to a school record 16 wins, going 16-5 overall and capturing the GLVC regular season title with an 11-2 mark. Musso led the Lady Hawks to their first national tournament appearance since 1995 and put together a program record 13 game winning streak to open the season. He was named the 2006 GLVC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year. Prior to Quincy Musso served as an assistant coach for two years at Lindenwood University. He assisted with the men's program in 2004 when the team finished 19-3-1 and won the NAIA National Championship. In 2005 he moved over to an assistant with the women's program, helping Lindenwood to a 17-3-1 overall record and finishing in the national rankings. Musso, a native of St. Louis, Mo. and a graduate of DeSmet High School, maintains his strong ties to the soccer rich St. Louis Metro area.

Established in 1978 with a commitment to the purposes, fundamental policies and basic principles of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has grown to embody the vision established by the founders of the organization and has melded athletic and academic excellence for 34 years. The GLVC, which at one point over the past decade grew to 17 members and was the largest athletic conference in the country in any division, has fully embraced NCAA Division II. Although formed and developed as one of the nation’s premier basketball conferences, the GLVC now sponsors 18 championship sports, including football, and is one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II conferences. The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC. Since its inception, 16 different institutions have joined the league. Those members include: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994), University of Missouri-St. Louis (1995), Drury University (2005), Missouri S&T (2005), Rockhurst University (2005), University of Illinois-Springfield (2008), Maryville University (2008), William Jewell College (2009) and McKendree University (2010). On June 8, 2012, Truman State University was admitted to the conference and will begin competing in the GLVC in the fall of 2013. Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season, IPFW left the league following the 2000-01 academic year, and SIU Edwardsville exited the league following the 2007-08 academic year. These departures opened the door for the seven-team expansion over the past decade, allowing the league to grow 17 institutions. Northern Kentucky departed following the 2011-12 season to bring the current membership number to 16 schools. The conference headquarters are located in downtown Indianapolis, one of the many major Midwest media markets in which the league maintains a presence. The GLVC has schools in Milwaukee/ Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Springfield, Ill. (Illinois Springfield), Springfield, Mo. (Drury), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst, William Jewell) and St. Louis (Maryville, McKendree, Missouri-St. Louis). The conference sponsors 18 championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men and basketball, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and volleyball for women. GLVC institutions have won 12 national championships in basketball, including Bellarmine’s national title in 2011. Kentucky Wesleyan leads all Division II institutions with eight men’s basketball titles, while Southern Indiana won the men’s crown in 1995. Northern Kentucky won the school’s first-ever women’s basketball national championship in 2000 and followed that with a national title in 2008. In addition, Northern Kentucky became the first GLVC member to win a national championship in men’s soccer, while USI staked claim to the GLVC’s first baseball national championship in 2010. SIU Edwardsville was the first GLVC member to win a national championship in softball in 2007. The league also takes pride in recognizing the many academic and athletic accomplishments achieved by its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. In 2001, the league announced the creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class being inducted in 2002. The GLVC annually presents the Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award to the top male and female student-athlete in the league, and the Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni Award of Distinction to alumni who both succeeded while a GLVC student-athlete and excelled in accomplishments after graduation.

History of North Campus Field

North Campus field became home to the Quincy University soccer program in 1975. The decision for the Hawks move to North Campus Field was made by Quincy University Athletic Director Sherrill Hanks and Hawks head coach Jack Mackenzie. They were joined in their efforts by the Mart Heinen Booster Club and the group eyed the current location for the move. The field's original resident, the QU men's soccer team, was joined in 1983 when Quincy University added the women's soccer program. The field, which was orginally named the OLA Field, was re-named in 1984 following the acquisition of the Our Lady of Angels Seminary by Quincy University. The following year, with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Willer and Hardee's Restaurants, Quincy University

Gene Autry, Rod Laver, Andre The Giant. And, oh yes, for 34 years the most prestigious "small college" basketball tournament in the land. A rundown of the Mart Heinen Club's presentations would fill many pages. Members of the Hawk-crazy booster group are a creative and energetic cross-section of the community. Synonymous with the steady rise of QU's athletic program to national acclaim has been the matchless input of The Mart Heinen Club -- men and women volunteering on behalf of the Hawks and Lady Hawks. Not all such support groups are held in such high regard. Too often those at both major universities and small colleges have allowed their spirit and financial input to run rampant; but words such as "probation" and "suspension" have never been used in referring to sports teams at Quincy College or Quincy University. It's been 50 years since a corps of perhaps 25-30 men (no women allowed in 1947) pooled their enthusiasm for the brand new Hawks football team and formed The Quincy College Quarterback Club. Membership grew quickly as The Brown & White grid teams of Coaches Mac Wenskunas, Bron Bacevich and Gene McCarter thrived on their own momentum. The 1949 team under Coach Wenskunas and assistant Ray DeGreeff had the whole town hoppin' with its 8-1 record. Teams of that post-World War II period were loaded with veterans of military service and it took a very gritty youngster to come out of high school and earn a place in the Hawks' lineup. That '49 team not only knocked off Western Illinois and Eastern Illinois, which were much larger schools, but upended the Leathernecks and Panthers in their own Homecoming games. Quarterback Club spirit blossomed anew with each victory and each new season. So, what a jolt it was to its members and all of Quincy in 1954 when the administration dropped football as an intercollegiate sport. Soccer wasn't added to the program until 1964. Dropping football was not a popular decision among Quarterback Clubbers and other fans; but then the club was so solid it wasn't ready to wither away. Basketball had been gaining momentum here under Coaches DeGreeff, Fran Willett and Harry Forrester. Harry had just come on the scene and guys in the booster club liked his dedication to the school and to the game. But "Quarterback" was no longer an appropriate name for the Hawks' booster organization. The logical name -- and it didn't take 'em long to pick it -- was Mart Heinen Club.

In the summer of 1946, Mart Heinen, QC athletic director and coach of all sports, had lost his life in a fire that ravaged the LaSalle Hotel in downtown Chicago. Heinen was a member of the Quincy City Council as well and had gone to Chicago with Mayor Edward Schneidman and other city officials. Ironically, meetings they were to attend related to QC and its plans and hopes for welcoming returning military veterans. Launching the new GI Bill and bundles of red tape that went with it was no simple matter. The number of sports offered grew sharply as the numbers of participants increased, but bas ketball led the way. Under its new name, The Mart Heinen Club was anxious to establish an identity, and the decision to sponsor a holiday basketball tournament seemed to be a bold move at the time. But the first one was a tremendous success. Tournaments were so few at the time that a strong field was booked -- even though the first telephone calls weren't made until October. Less then three months later the title game here between Christmas and New Year's saw Western Illinois topping St. Ambrose (Iowa). Those teams had played a six-overtime game at Macomb earlier in the month. Other "charter" teams in the event that was to last 33 more years were Eastern Illinois, Northeast Missouri (now Truman State), Illinois Wesleyan, Loras (Iowa), Monmouth and the host Hawks. A steady and assured cash flow from the tournament provided a boost for QC athletics and made possible such major projects as construction of the Memorial Gym Annex. The Annex, now taken for granted, was built more than a decade after the opening of the gymnasium. In addition to housing Concessions, the Annex serves as a setting for meetings, musical presentations and other activities. The Holiday Tournament served as a magnet, attracting full-house crowds and a record mem bership for The Heinen Club. Membership was consistently over 850. The tourney soon featured teams from schools with enrollments from 400 to 21,000. Future NBA stars Dick Barnett and John Barnhill from Tennessee State, Lucious (Luke) Jackson of Pan American and Jack Sikma of Illinois Wesleyan helped draw capacity turnouts. Charley Vaughn of Southern Illinois-Carbondale, Henry Logan from Western Carolina and Archie Talley of Salem (W. Va.) are still remembered, as were many of the Hawk players coached by Forrester, Pim Goff, John Ortwerth and Sherrill Hanks.
