Preparing for the Fair

Think about key skills needed in today’s workplace: problem solving, analytical thinking, and the ability to work independently. What do they all have in common? They are all related to STEM subjects!

Not only is there a vast amount of opportunities available for you, but starting salaries can also be extremely lucrative. Whether you have decided your career path or are considering your options, discover a range of employers who are looking for students and graduates with these skills. Exhibitors often take down the name of anyone who has impressed them and feed this back to the recruitment team. So, give yourself a head start in the competition for places by following these 3 top tips: 1. Do your research Make the most of this experience - don’t ask a question that can be answered by looking on a website. Exhibitors will expect you to have researched them so check their websites for information

about what they do, where they specialise and entry requirements. On the day it will be very difficult to have an in-depth conversation with every exhibitor. Review the list of companies attending and make a priority list of the ones you definitely want to talk with. 2. Be professional Making a good first impression can go a long way, especially if you meet with an employee at a firm that you then decide to apply to; you can refer to this meeting in your application and at an interview. Put your phone on silent, introduce yourself to each representative with a smile, handshake and an introduction (e.g. your name and year of study) before asking your question. Employees are a great source of information for “what’s it really like?” types

of questions. Direct the more probing questions to the graduate recruitment team; they are the ones who do the initial sift of applications. Make notes and remember to ask anyone you speak with if you can mention them in your application form. 3. Think about your questions • What do you look for when selecting candidates? • What sort of work experience would make me a good candidate for your organisation? • What makes an application stand out for you? • What would you say is particularly distinctive about your organisation? • What is your company’s approach to corporate responsibility?
