GET INVOLVED Outlands Think In Thursday 30 April, 10.30am & 5.30pm at the Hunt & Darton Café, 12-14 Rendezvous Street

We are having a great time working alongside our collaborators to create moments of debate, discovery and celebration. Over 60 women from East Kent played a part in making Women of the World a festival to remember. We have enjoyed celebrating young talent with Brixton-based Raw Material, running a pop up political café and co-hosting a hustings with Academy FM as part of Election Festival.

SALT Think In Thursday 14 May & Thursday 11 June, 5.30pm at Quarterhouse Folkestone Fun Palace Think In Thursday 18 June, Thursday 16 July, Thursday 13 August and Thursday 10 September, 5.30pm at Quarterhouse

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Folkestone Fun Palace 4 October 2015

We have two exciting festivals coming up this season: Normal? - Festival of the Brain in May, and Outlands, our new festival of outdoor arts which this year is co-curated with Music for Change. Preparations are also underway for the nationwide Fun Palaces weekend in October and an autumn festival about the sea and the environment: SALT.

SALT – Sea and Environment Festival 21 – 24 October 2015 Book Festival 20 – 29 November 2015 WOW – Festival of Inspiring Women 8 – 13 March 2016

We continue to work with Folkestone Fringe and local co-curators to create each festival. And that is where you come in. The festivals don’t exist yet – they are you and your interests. These events combine the best of the nation’s contemporary artists and thinkers with community-sourced activity. For every festival we look for people who have experiences to share and a passion for making things happen in their community. If you want to be part of future festivals at Quarterhouse, make sure you come to a ‘think in’: an open meeting to discuss the themes and content of the festival. Finally, for the moments when sharing your ideas or creativity feels daunting, I keep John Cage’s advice taped to the radio on my desk: “Nothing is a mistake. There’s no win and no fail. There’s only make.” See you soon

by Duncan Macmillan You’re six years old. Mum’s in hospital. Dad says she’s ‘done something stupid’. She finds it hard to be happy. Liberation from Normality

What is so good about being told a story? Reading for Wellbeing explores the positive effects of listening to someone read aloud. It helps people to feel relaxed, comforted and able to express themselves through discussion. Zena Cooper discovered Reading for Wellbeing whilst working in a mental health service and she has run groups for individuals with and without mental health issues. Come join Zena in the Biobliotherapy corner for two Reading for Wellbeing workshops, with carefully selected texts aimed to get you thinking and feeling.

In this workshop we will look at how ‘normal’ is defined and how we are affected by these definitions. We will also look at what keeps us from being who we ‘really’ are and what we can do to be more ourselves. Using painting and drawing materials we will create visual images to capture expressions of our responses. No experience necessary. This not about ‘art’ but about making marks to express how you feel. No equipment needed just bring yourself. Workshop led by Arike.

This year’s theme, ‘Intimate Voices’, takes its name from a rather cryptic inscription in the score of Sibelius’ String Quartet in D minor. Though its meaning in relation to Sibelius is somewhat mysterious, it is nonetheless a phrase that sums up chamber music perfectly.

In fitting with the theme, many of the chosen works for Sacconi Chamber Music Festival 2015 are intimate dialogues or have been written for, or dedicated to people with whom the composers had special relationships.

Sibelius himself said: “Music begins where the possibilities of language end.” It is this notion of music as an expression of intimacy, sometimes of love, a way of talking without words, without

David Starkey: Magna Carta Friday 12 June, 7pm Tickets £15 / £13 concesssions The UK’s leading constitutional historian, known for his forthright views, talks about the 13th century agreement that ,imperfect though it was,and radically modified in its first ten years, limited for the first time the power of the monarch by stating the basic rights, privileges, and liberties of leading citizens and clergy. There are few more stimulating thinkers, and few who understand better the way the most powerful have thought throughout our history. His assessment of the situation then , and how our constitution stands today exactly 800 years later , will amaze and challenge you. A Cambridge educated grammar school boy who became a respected LSE lecturer, a uniquely abrasive debater on Radio 4’s Moral Maze, and the creator and presenter of many very popular historical TV series.
