Come and celebrate the best of Scottish food and drink in St Andrews St Andrews Partnership, in collaboration with Food from Fife, is delighted to bring you the programme for the 2013 St Andrews Food and Drink Festival. There will be four weeks of exciting food and drink events in and around the town in the build up to St Andrew’s Day. The festival celebrates Scotland and Fife’s wonderful produce and natural larder, and showcases some of the best places to eat, drink, stay, shop and relax in St Andrews. In this guide you will find listings for events taking place throughout the festival. More events are being added every day so please make sure that you have a look at our website when you are planning your trip to the town!

Join us for St Andrew’s Day in St Andrews. As well as all of the tasty food events on St Andrew’s Day, there are of exciting events in the town centre to coincide with the switch-on of the festive season lights. These events are open and free to all. Come and watch our ice sculptors creating amazing sculptures live from 11am till 3pm at Holy Trinity Church. There will be children’s rides and activities in Market Street throughout the afternoon with delicious on-street refreshments available in the late afternoon.

The lights switch on will be at the east end of Market Street, by the fountain. The festivities will start at 4pm with the Star Radio stage and at 5.30pm the Provost of Fife, Jim Leishman, will pull the switch to illuminate the town. The fantastic Madras College Pipe band will lead a parade round the town centre – ending in St Salvator’s Quad where the fun will continue with a free outdoor ceilidh. The listings were correct at the time of going to print. However details and timings can change so please check final details with the venue in advance.


How to Get to St Andrews By car From Edinburgh to St Andrews Leave the city via the A90 (follow signs for the Forth Road Bridge). Continue north over the bridge on the A90 (which becomes the M90) until junction 8 then take the A91 eastwards, following signs to St Andrews. Journey time is approximately 65-70 minutes. From Glasgow to St Andrews Leave the city via the M8 towards Edinburgh. Exit at junction 2, joining the M9, then the A8000, then the A90, all the while following signs for the Forth Road Bridge. Continue north over the bridge on the A90 (which becomes the M90) until junction 8 then take the A91 eastwards, following signs to St Andrews. Journey time is approximately 90-100 minutes.

By bus From Dundee and the north to St Andrews Leave Dundee city centre via the Tay Road Bridge (A92), Continue for two miles, then at a roundabout take the A914, then the A919 (passing Leuchars Rail Station), then the A91, all the while following signs for St Andrews. Journey time is approximately 20 minutes.

By rail St Andrews is served by Leuchars Rail Station, which is on the East Coast main line linking London, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. The station is just ten minutes by road from St Andrews. Public bus services to St Andrews meet all train arrivals and there are always taxis waiting just outside the railway station. The modern bus station in St Andrews is very well served by frequent and comfortable express coaches running from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee, and also by an extensive local public bus network which operates throughout St Andrews and the wider Fife area. By air International and most domestic air passengers will normally arrive at Edinburgh Airport (80 minutes by road) or Glasgow Airport (120 minutes by road). Some domestic air routes serve Dundee Airport (20 minutes by road). St Andrews taxi companies run airport shuttle services.

Avoid the high-street frenzy in the run up to Christmas and join us for this weekend winter wonderland. Buy your presents at the festive market, visit Santa Claus with the children, sample fine Scottish produce at our food & drink tastings, prepare for Christmas lunch with our cooking demos, relax with a Christmas movie or enjoy the singing and dancing entertainment with mulled wine and other festive treats! Christmas Market and food tastings/choir performances will be from 10.00am – 5.00pm. Master classes are at 6.30pm.

From Oven to Table: Contemporary Pottery made in Fife 10.30am – 4pm FREE Kinburn House, Kinburn Park, Doubledykes Road, St Andrews, KY16 9DP. St Andrews Museum during St Andrews Food and Drink Festival Be inspired by the diversity of domestic ware made by contemporary potteries in Fife. The exhibition covers a variety of approaches to the craft from as far west as Culross, all the way to St Andrews in the east. And with everything for sale, why not come along and find some unique presents for Christmas! The display includes items from Susan McGill Designs, St Andrews Pottery, Wemyss Ware, Butter Wynd Pottery, and Culross Pottery and Gallery. The museum is home to the ‘Café in the Park’ selling homemade food during museum opening hours. The exhibition will run throughout the festival.

Recollections of medieval pilgrimage 9am – 2pm FREE Forth Pilgrim “statio” at Fife Farmers’ Market, Argyle St Car Park, St Andrews KY16 9BX St Andrews Food and Drink Festival is bringing a touch of history to its November activities through recollections of medieval pilgrimages which brought thousands of people to the area. Forth Pilgrim Ltd ‘Pilgrim Statio’ performances will be taking place at a number of locations with a “fun and friendly” information centre. Roger and Eileen Pickering, along with other members of the Forth Pilgrim team, will be providing free, light hearted, educational costumed interaction with visitors of all ages.

A guided introduction to four Extremaduran wines from the blender himself. Working with StAnza, Matthew Stewart, exporter and blender for the Spanish cooperative Viñaoliva, leads a guided tasting and talks about the blender’s art. Matthew is also a poet – his entertaining Tasting Notes were published by Fife’s HappenStance Press in 2012. There will be time for interaction and questions, as he introduces the wine of poetry, and the poetry of wine. Guests will have the chance to taste four Zaleo wines (Pardina 2012, Rosado 2012, Tempranillo 2012 and Premium 2010) and food pairings of ham, bread and Spanish cheese.

An Introduction to Scottish Gins 7pm – 8.30pm Business Training Programme Luvians Ice Cream Parlour, 84 Market Street, St Andrews, KY16 9PA As part of the St Andrews Food and Drink Festival, the St Andrews Partnership is hosting a series of training sessions for local businesses. This year the training programme aims to give an insight and introduction to Scottish gins. There has been a recent resurgence in Scottish gin production – and we are delighted that the expert team at Luvians in St Andrews have offered to help local business people learn about this new growing sector. There is a choice of dates, with places available on either Tuesday 12th November, or Tuesday 26th November. Participants will be taken through a tutored tasting of six Scottish gins by Archie McDiarmid (Manager of Luvians Bottle Shop). The cost of this event is just £5. St Andrew’s Day - Lights, Parade, Ceildh! From 4pm FREE The food festival organisers have been working with local organisations to support several large-scale events for St Andrew’s Day itself. The events open and free to all, following the food festival events in St Andrews Town Hall on November 30 there will be a festive lights switch-on ceremony, organised by the St Andrews Partnership. This will take place at the east end of Market Street, by the fountain. The festivities will start at 4pm and culminate in the lights switch-on at 5:30pm by the Provost of Fife, Jim Leishman. On-street refreshments will be available, as the organisers work the hospitality team at SRUC Elmwood to provide non-alcoholic hot mulled drinks. There will then be a parade around the town centre - led by the Madras College Pipe Band - which will end in St Salvator’s Quad. At 6pm the quad will be the venue for an outdoor ceilidh organised jointly by St Andrews Community Council and the student-run Fellowship of St Andrews.

The Edinburgh firm of Macsween’s produces probably the most famous haggis in Scotland – including a hugely popular vegetarian version which Robert Burns could never have imagined! “The Macsween Haggis Bible” is a new book written by Jo Macsween, and it features fifty mouth-watering recipes, Jo rewrites the rules and demonstrates that haggis is a versatile ingredient that can be savoured at all times of day and throughout the year. December 1 Food photography 12noon – 4pm FREE St Andrews Town Hall, Queen’s Gardens, St Andrews, KY16 9TA St Andrews Town Hall will be a hive of activity for the last three days of the St Andrews Food and Drink Festival. St Andrews Photographic Society will be staging their Annual Exhibition as well as an exhibition of food related mounted photographs. As St Andrew’s day is celebrated in many countries around the world, will have 4 sessions on the Sunday each focusing on a different country. 12pm: Danish Pastries - you can choose which shape they would like to make. Fillings - a choice of cinnamon or almond. 1pm: French Pissaladiere - onions, anchovies or red peppers and olives. 2pm: Greece - Filo pies - you can choose which shape you would like to make. Fillings Spinach and Feta or Baklava. 3pm : Italy - Biscotti - orange and hazelnut or almond and cranberry or fig. The St Andrews Food and Drink Festival is again bringing together the fantastic, award winning team of chefs from Fairmont St Andrews, the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa, Rufflets Country House Hotel and St Andrews Links, who are all members of the Fife Food Network’s “Food

from Fife” initiative. They will be supported by chef lecturers and students from Fife College. Guests will have a chance to meet some of our iconic producers, celebrate the resurgence in Scottish beers and gins, and eat a fantastic meal designed and produced by some of the country’s best chefs.
