Head Coach Billy Emerson

Dear PVI Baseball Supporters,

Welcome to PVI Baseball 2023! My coaching staff and I are honored to coach at such a great school with a warm and caring community and staff. Personally I have been amazingly blessed to be a part of PVI for the last 21years and I am looking forward to the continued success of our baseball program.

Twenty one years ago, we all set out to rebuild a great high school baseball program. Since that time, Paul VI Baseball has risen to area and national prominence. Players, parents, supporters and coaches alike have worked tirelessly to keep our dreams alive and to provide the best for our studentathletes. We have accomplished much of what was planned and built one of the top baseball programs in the Mid-Atlantic region.

After winning our first State Championship in a decade in 2004, we have been regularly atop area rankings, nationally ranked and a staple of the Virginia State rankings over the past 19 years. More recently, the 2009 Panthers became the first and only team to win the WCAC and State titles in the same season, followed by a repeat of those championships in 2012. PVI Baseball has won 15 championship titles in the last 18 seasons and has been Nationally Ranked 8 times since 2005. Along the way, we have played and won as many games as any team in the area, having compiled an astounding record of 372-176 (.678) since 2003.

Another byproduct of our progress is the collection of over 100 student-athletes who have continued their baseball careers in college. More will join the collegiate baseball ranks following this season and all of our alumni (college players or not) have enjoyed success in their post high school endeavors. We like to feel that we played a part in that success and that the life lessons learned on the diamond at PVI will forever be applied to our players’ daily lives. We are very proud of our former players, their families and their contributions to our success.

The more we accomplish, the more driven we are to succeed. Our ultimate goal, just as it was in 2002, is to build the best high school baseball program in America with the best young men in America. Within our structure, our players are held to higher standards in and out of school. One of our goals is to build quality human beings through the sport of baseball by stressing the importance of life skills.

I hope all of you are as excited as our players and staff about this season and the potential of this year’s team. All year, the players have been working hard in the classroom, the weight room, on the track and on the field to bring you a championship season. This year’s group could someday be the best team PVI history!

In further strengthening our program, we will continue to foster strong relationships with the PVI community and parochial schools to let every young man know that PVI has the best baseball program not only in the WCAC, but also in the entire area.

Thank you to all the businesses and patrons who have donated to our program over the years. I would also like to thank those of you who have put in so much effort to make our program great. From fieldwork, to donations, communications, event planning, media guides, scorekeeping, announcing and more…without the Parents of PVI Baseball, we’d be nowhere! Your involvement is greatly appreciated! I especially want to thank my wife Lisa, my two daughters Amanda and Haley, my son William IV, and my family. You all afford me the time and support to do my best.

Thanks for coming and we’ll see you at the next game!

God

From the Desk of The Athletic Director

Welcome to the 2023 Baseball Season!

Across the board at PVI, we are blessed to have so many dedicated and decorated coaches leading our studentathletes. These are coaches who teach accountability, understand and encourage academic success, support each other’s programs and work hard to build great teams based in faith.

Coaches who are “teachers” and Christian leaders with character and integrity make a tremendous difference in the lives of our children. Teaching our student-athletes to be respectful and accountable is teaching them to be successful in life.

We are also very fortunate to have such a strong network of support from our alumni, boosters, parents, school staff, and our overall community. No doubt about it…PVI is truly a special place.

It is critical to recognize the value that athletics have as an extremely important part of the educational process. More importantly, to recognize that our sports programs at PVI are an extension of our mission and our ministry. As a college-prep school we strive to run college-prep athletic programs so that our student-athletes who are able to combine the right amounts of ability and desire can move to the next level thanks to the PVI athletic experience.

At the same time, a major focus of our athletic program is to help our student-athletes to develop lasting life skills to use as they move on in college, in a career, as productive members of society, as husbands and wives, and as parents. When you surround a child with the gospel, discipline, integrity, and truth you can make a difference in his or her life forever. That is the core of our mission. It is easier to build boys and girls than it is to mend men and women.

Finally, I’d like to remind all of our spectators to be “good sports.” Be a fan, but let the coaches coach and let the players play. Let’s create a positive environment for all involved. One where student-athletes and parents get the most out of their experiences. One where winning isn’t the only thing. One where opponents and officials are not taunted or humiliated. We want an environment where the emphasis is on positive relationships and learning important life lessons through hard work, competition and faith.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the Director of Athletics at PVI. I am humbled by our community’s sense of togetherness.

We are truly ONE TEAM! #TeamPVI

2023 PANTHERS BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE St. Paul VI Catholic High School 13

St. Paul VI Catholic High School opened in the fall of 1983 and fielded its first baseball team at the JV level in the spring of 1984. The Panthers played their first season of Varsity baseball the following year in the spring of 1985.

PVI has competed in the highly regarded Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) since 1986. The WCAC, formerly known as the Washington Metro Athletic Conference (WMAC) until the fall of 1993, is comprised of 13 Catholic high schools from Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Three different WCAC baseball teams (including Paul VI) have been nationally ranked since 2005.

Beyond conference play, PVI competed for the Virginia Catholic High School League (VCHSL) Championship from 1985 to 1991. In 1992, the Virginia Independent Schools Baseball Association (VISBA) was formed to provide a State Championship for all private high schools in the State of Virginia. In 2006, VISBA became VISAA, which stands for Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. Today, VISAA includes almost 80 private schools throughout the state.

In 37 seasons of Varsity Baseball, the Panthers have captured 18 titles including the WMAC Tournament/Conference Championship (1993), five WCAC Regular Season Conference/Divisional Championships (1999, 2005, 2007, 2008 & 2018), five VISBA/VISAA State Championships (1994, 2004, 2008, 2009 & 2012), three Southeastern Baseball Classic Championships (2008, 2009 & 2016), the DC Sportsfan Challenge Championship (2010) and three WCAC Tournament Conference Championships (2007, 2009 & 2012). All 18 championships were won in the past 30 years including 15 from 2004 thru 2018.

Baseball’s Words of Wisdom

Baseball is a game where a curve is an optical illusion, a screwball can be a pitch or a person, stealing is legal and you can spit anywhere you like except in the umpire’s eye or on the ball.

Jim Murray

My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging.

Hank Aaron

Any baseball is beautiful. No other small package comes as close to the ideal design and utility. It is a perfect object for a man’s hand. Pick it up and it instantly suggests its purpose; it is meant to be thrown a considerable distance — thrown hard and with precision.

Roger Angell

You gotta be a man to play baseball for a living, but you gotta have a lot of little boy in you, too.

Roy Campanella

What are we at the park for except to win? I’d trip my mother. I’d help her up, brusher her off, tell her I’m sorry. But mother don’t make it to third.

Leo Durocher

People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

Rogers Hornsby

I became a good pitcher when I stopped trying to make them miss the ball and started trying to make them hit it.

Sandy Koufax

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a mans determination

Tommy Lasorda

Just take the ball and throw it where you want to. Throw strikes. Home plate don’t move.

Satchel Paige

I see great things in baseball. It’s our game – the American game. It will take our people out‐of‐doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us.

Walt Whitman

You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.

Jim Bouton

Tribute to Panther Field in Fairfax

Baseball had been played at Panther Field since 1937, when the Fairfax High School Rebels first took the field at their newly built school. The construction of the campus was performed by the Works Progress Administration, providing badly needed jobs during the Great Depression. After World War II, the athletic complex was named “War Memorial Field” in honor of Fairfax graduates and other veterans lost during that conflict. The Fairfax staff developed a reputation during those years for thorough, careful maintenance of the baseball field, and it was used extensively for tournaments and other amateur play.

In the 1960s, when Fairfax High School moved to its current site, this facility was used as the North Campus of George Mason University. While the Patriots played here, fencing was improved and dugouts and batting cages installed. The dirt berm in left field that is a hallmark of the field—and the bane of many an outfielder over the years—was also installed to cover a low brick wall that had been a previous source of injuries.

The Diocese of Arlington purchased the facility in 1982, and the Paul VI Panthers first played here in the spring of 1983. Improvements from that period include the grandstand and lighting in left field, the pressbox, the flagpole, and the “Panther Pause” concession stand. The name “Panther Field” was added in 1999. Still recognized as one of the finest scholastic baseball venues in Northern Virginia and the WCAC, Panther Field continued its renewal process. A new scoreboard was installed in 2001; the playing surface underwent extensive rehabilitation in 2002, with installation of new dirt and sod in the infield and Bermuda grass in the outfield; and new netting was added above the backstop in 2003.

After completion of the new school gymnasium in the fall of 2003, the complex received a significant face lift entering the 2004 season. The dugouts were renovated and lengthened, and the press box was expanded to include clubhouse and locker facilities. 2005 saw improvements to the backstop netting and clubhouse interior, and a complete rebuild of the batting cages was completed in 2006. Significant portions of the year-to-year maintenance are performed on a volunteer basis by players, parents, and fans at two or three “Field Day” weekends in late February and early March. The continuing

generosity and hard work of the boosters, sponsors, and fans permitted Panthers Baseball to host opponents at one of the finest high school baseball facilities in the area at the time.

At the time, Paul VI was one of only two schools in the conference able to host a night game at all. Day games are great, but nothing beats the thrill and excitement of a game under the lights! Panther Field was an exciting and professional environment to practice and play. Home crowds regularly filled the bleachers around the complex!

Varsity Head Coach

BILLY EMERSON

21st year at PVI (17th as Varsity Head Coach)

Billy Emerson returned as varsity head coach six years ago after guiding the JV to perfect 20-0 record in 2016, following three years completely away from coaching. His 2018 Varsity Panthers finished 24-7, falling in the WCAC semifinals and the state semifinals, ranked locally and nationally. His 2019 Panthers qualified for the state tournament for a record 16th consecutive season and his 2020 Panthers showed promise, winning their first and only game before COVID-19 ended the season. He was a finalist for 2019 NOVA Baseball Magazine Coach of the Year. In 2021, Emerson’s Panthers were limited to a 14 game schedule, with no option for postseason play. His 2022 team won 15 games and reached the state quarterfinals.

After a standout area high school and college baseball career that ended at George Mason University, Emerson was drafted into professional baseball in 1994 and played for the Class ‘A’ Newark Buffalos of the Frontier League. In 1995 he was offered several opportunities to continue playing professional baseball but opted to complete his college degree, work as a scout for the Houston Astros while beginning a career in education and coaching.

Emerson’s first varsity head coaching job was at T.C. Williams High School where he led the Titans to their best season in school history in 1998, earning him honors as Northern Virginia’s Coach of the Year. Emerson stepped away from his head coaching duties in 1999 to accept a promotion as Assistant Athletic Director at his alma mater: James Madison High School in Vienna, VA. During this time he kept a hand in baseball, assisting at Madison and in the Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball League.

Emerson left Madison in the summer of 2002 to become Head Coach at Paul VI. His first 10 seasons at PVI were extremely successful, yielding an average of 22 wins per season, 3 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Championships, 4 VISAA State Championships, and multiple national rankings. He is the all-time leader in coaching wins at PVI with a record of 280-128 (.686), and has an overall varsity head coaching record of 301-164 (.656) through 2020. He has been named “Coach of the Year” by the WCAC (twice), The Washington Post (All Met), The Washington

Examiner, the Washington DC Homeplate Club, the VISAA (twice), and was one of 8 finalists for Baseball America National Coach of the Year in 2008. His players have garnered numerous AllConference, All-State, and All-Met honors along the way, including Academic All-State selections, as well as the 2008 and 2009 State Player of the Year selections. Emerson has guided hundreds of student-athletes to college and professional baseball in the past 20+ years.

Emerson spent seven summers in the Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball League as an Assistant Coach, Manager, and General Manager. From 2006-2009 he managed 315 games (high school and collegiate combined), winning 226. After graduating from Paul VI in 2007, he went on to play four years at Rider University as an infielder, appearing in the Cal State Fullerton Regional in 2008 and the Austin Regional in 2010. Coach Ralston led Rider to the conference playoffs all four years and won the 2008 and 2010 MAAC Championships. In 2011, he was named to the MAAC All Tournament Team. He also participated in two NCAA Regionals: 2008 Cal-State Fullerton (CSF, UCLA, UVA, Rider) and 2010 Austin (Univ. of Texas, Rice, Louisiana Lafayette, Rider). At Rider, Coach Ralston holds the record for most games played, is in the Top 30 for most hits and Top 30 for most RBIs in program history. While at PVI, John was a three year starter on Varsity at shortstop, winning the 2004 State Championship and 2007 WCAC Championship. During Coach Ralston’s time at PVI, the Panthers had a record of 77-17 (.819). Individually, he earned 2006 WCAC 2nd Team and All-Met Honorable Mention as well as 2nd Team All-State honors in 2007. Coach Ralston graduated from Rider University in May 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. In 2014, he returned to Paul VI as an assistant coach, working primarily with the infielders. He is an Accounting Manager in the IT industry.

Paul VI Baseball Philosophy

The focus of the baseball program is not just winning and producing baseball players. The staff at PVI believes that the game of baseball can be used to develop successful and productive members of society. Life skills such as time management, teamwork and commitment are just a few of the lessons that are stressed to all players. PVI baseball players are held to a higher set of standards and are expected to be first-class citizens, students, and gentlemen. Along with those ideals, the PVI staff feels that the purpose of high school itself is to prepare kids for college, so the purpose of our high school baseball program is to also prepare kids for college baseball. A key philosophy in the PVI Baseball program is that academic performance strengthens athletic performance. If a player “gets it done” in the classroom, baseball will take care of itself.

The basic goals of our coaching staff for our players are as follows:

• To have fun, while appreciating the gift and glory of every day

• To produce high achieving, college bound students

• To produce gentlemen who are respectful, successful and productive members of society

• To help each student-athlete reach his maximum potential and play baseball at the next level

Priorities for those who participate in our program are as follows: Faith, Family, School, and Baseball.

Great Facilities

In June 2020, Paul VI moved to our new campus on the west side of Chantilly (just over the Loudoun County line, near South Riding). Buildings and fields don’t make the institution, people do but it sure is nice to combine the amazing school community and culture we already have, with a top-notch facility.

Our new campus athletics area include:

• A turf stadium field, permanently lined for soccer, football and lacrosse, with lights and home and visitor side seating

• A turf field perm anently lined for baseball and field hockey, with lights

• A softball field with natural grass, with lights

• Stadium style seating behind home plate for both softball and baseball

• Six tennis courts

• Full size eight lane track, with a natural grass inside field that can be used for soccer, football, lacrosse, field hockey, or any other rectangular field sport

Scott Eastment Memorial Park is the only on-campus home field in the WCAC with lights!

Scott Eastment Memorial Park is the only on-campus home field in the WCAC with lights! Paul VI is one of only three schools in the conference able to host a night game at all. Day games are great, but not all fans can make a day game and nothing beats the thrill and excitement of a game under the lights!

More Games Equals More Experience… On a Higher Level

The PVI Baseball Program plays as many games as any program in the area. Including scrimmages and post-season play, the Varsity team can play up to 35 games every year. After the regular season, the Varsity plays in the WCAC Tournament. Plus, if the Varsity finishes in the top eight of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) poll, they advance to the VA State Tournament for a chance to play at Richmond’s historic Shepherd Stadium. The Panthers have won four State Championships and three WCAC Titles in the past 14 seasons, along with being nationally ranked in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016 and 2018. PVI’s astounding record of 372-176 (.678) is evidence that PVI has played and won more games than any other area program from 2003 to 2022

The JV team schedules at least 20 regular season contests per year (along with three to four scrimmages). That equates to at least seven more games than area public school JV teams will play The JV has played and won as many games as any other area JV team since 2003, finishing every season but one with a winning record – including undefeated seasons in 2005 and 2016.

The quality of opponents at PVI is very high. As a member of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), the Panthers always face a challenging conference schedule. PVI Baseball also schedules some of the best non-conference opponents from the Washington Metropolitan Area. The varsity team travels to California, Florida and/or South Carolina during spring break for additional non-conference games. Our fundraising program covers the expense of our trip.

Within the WCAC from 2003 to 2022:

 Seven of the WCAC’s 10 teams have been ranked in the Washington Post Top 10.

 All three WCAC Virginia teams have been ranked in the VISAA Top 5

 Four WCAC teams have been Nationally Ranked by USA Today, ESPN and/or Baseball America, PVI, St. John’s, DeMatha and Good Counsel

The high level of competition not only makes you a better baseball player, it also draws the attention of college coaches and Major League scouts.

Other facts demonstrating our strength of schedule include:

 Multiple games (annually) against Nationally Ranked opponents.

 Multiple games (annually) against Washington Post Top 10 opponents.

 Every WCAC Varsity team has won at least 12 games and/or finished .500 since 2003.

 Almost 75% of our opponents from 2003-2022 had a winning record.

“The Way”

A Winning Approach

Playing baseball at St. Paul VI Catholic High School gives you the “total package.” It’s something we like to call “The PVI Way.”

At PVI, we make a year-round effort for our program and our players. Although the coaching staff encourages participation in other sports at PVI, there are opportunities for baseball players to improve all year through team baseball camps and baseball specific weight training and conditioning. In other words, we have all the camps you need. The staff also monitors the academic progress of baseball players throughout the school year. Our high school program is more like a college program. The idea is to prepare you for the next level. Those who plan to participate in other sports, are not disadvantaged or looked down upon by missing off-season baseball activities. We encourage multi-sport athletes.

Our off-season conditioning program runs from late November through the start of baseball season and focuses on flexibility, cardiovascular strength and endurance, muscular strength and endurance, speed, plyo-metric power and nutrition. The coaching staff is well educated in the latest techniques to improve athletic performance. From late November through late February the PVI Baseball staff coordinates camps for the players at local indoor baseball facilities. Players have a chance to improve skills with the coaching staff and prepare themselves for the upcoming season. In the summer, the staff co-coordinates at least 1-2 weeks of baseball camps in order for players to once again improve skills in the presence of PVI coaches and college coaches. The staff also produces a master schedule of PVI players’ summer teams and makes regular visits to summer games.

The staff monitors academic progress year round through communication with the Dean of Academics and regular checks by the head coach on the school’s intranet grading system. Players are typically referred to tutors and teachers who provide assistance if necessary. A major emphasis is placed on the idea of academic performance strengthening athletic performance. Players often attend after-school study hall with the coaching staff throughout the course of the season. This not only gives the players extra time for schoolwork, it also further emphasizes our philosophies. The Principal, Dean of Students and Dean of Academics also visit the players once a year during practice to make sure each student-athlete fully understands the expectations of the institution.

Coaches meet with players before the season to set roles and goals. Following each season, players have a post season meeting with coaches to set new goals. The idea is to continue successes and improve upon weaknesses. Coaches also meet with players and parents to discuss college options. The coaching staff provides information on college recruiting, NCAA rules and standards and a realistic expectation for all interested players. The coaching staff is in constant contact with colleges throughout the country to ensure that every player who wants to go to the next level can get there.

“The PVI Way” takes high school baseball to a new level. The PVI coaching staff brings a collegiate approach and a professional approach to the program. The high standards, academic monitoring, personal interest in each player, study halls, off-season conditioning and organized practices mirror the protocol for college baseball. Players are told “if you want to be a pro, act like one now ” On that accord, our coaching staff makes every effort to run a program on a professional level. Although well experienced, the coaching staff is always looking for professional development opportunities. By attending clinics and collaborating with other high school coaches, college coaches and professionals, the PVI staff focuses on properly teaching fundamentals with the latest techniques and the finer nuances of the game.

A Staff with Experience, Integrity & Connections

Now in his 21st year at PVI, Head Coach Billy Emerson and his staff have established Paul VI Baseball as one of the most successful and respected programs in America.

Panther Baseball is a family. Paul VI has maintained an amazing group of assistants for years Assistants at the JV and Varsity levels bring years of high level playing and coaching experience to the program . Consistency breeds success!

The baseball staff is loaded with professionals who take their positions very seriously and realize the impact that their actions and decisions make on young lives. The staff also believes in the principles of a Catholic education and focuses on using baseball as a tool to teach important life lessons. The coaches strongly believe in a wholesome, family atmosphere. Players at PVI aren’t simply looked at as baseball players; they are members of a family and each member is just as important as the next. Success off the field is clearly evident as well. Grade point averages rise as rapidly as winning percentages and the Panthers have built a reputation as a dedicated, respectful and hard working group of young men.

Paul VI Baseball has a rich history of sending players to the next level. Since 2003, that tradition has simply grown stronger. Along with numerous “walk -on” invitees, the PVI staff has helped dozens of PVI players land a college roster spot. First and foremost, PVI baseball players will go on to college. Secondly, if the player is willing to find the “best fit,” he will go on to play college baseball.

See pages 31-32 in this media guide for a list of players who have gone on to play college baseball and beyond.

In Summer 2020, Paul VI moved to our new campus on the west side of Chantilly (just over the Loudoun County line, near South Riding). Buildings and fields don’t make the institution, people do but it sure is nice to combine the amazing school community and culture we already have,
